3 The 2017 American Legion 7 8 About The American Legion Junior Shooting Sports Program 9 Resolution No. 30: That all American Legion programs of gun safety and marksmanship be included in a National Americanism program entitled, "American Legion Shooting Sports Program." The American Legion Junior Shooting Sports Program is a gun safety education and marksmanship program that encompasses the basic elements of safety, education, enjoyment and competition. Shooters use the.177 caliber air rifle. 4.5 mm pellets. Firing at 10 meters distance Both males and females can participate. Two categories (Sporter & Percision) Team & Individual 3 Positions: Standing, Kneeling and Prone. Disabled youth are encouraged to join, as competitive shooting is a sport that creates an equal playing field for all competitors. Competitors who have reached their 18 th birthday or are a graduate of high school class of 2015 and those younger are eligible. Entry into the individual and team tournaments is limited to competitors who are active members of a Junior Shooting Club AFFILIATED by an American Legion Post. Resolution No. 10: 3

8 Student Handbook 22 The American Legion Postal Match 23 A Postal Match is a match in which competitor's fire on their home ranges using targets which have been marked for identification. The fired targets are then sent to the American Legion for scoring and ranking for awards". The annual 3-Position Junior Air Rifle National Championship is a tournament that begins with postal matches. State and/or regional champions are determined and advance to a qualification round (also a postal match) to determine the athletes who will earn expense-paid trips to compete in the national championship. In 2017 the preliminary postal rounds, more than 1,300 athletes entered in the individual competition and over 200 teams entered the team competition. Begins November 1, The annual American Legion Junior 3-Position Air Rifle National Championship is a shoulder-to-shoulder match that is held at the USA Shooting Range Facilities at the Olympic Training Center, Colorado Springs. Top fifteen second round shooters (individual) from each category qualify for National Championships. July 24 July 29, The national champions in both categories receive $5,000 college scholarships generously donated by The American Legion and Sons of The American Legion. 2 nd place overall finishers each receive $1,000 college scholarship generously donated by The American Legion Auxiliary. 8

9 Olympic Shooting Facts 4 Olympic sports involve marksmanship. Shooting is one of 28 summer Olympic sports. Olympic Shooting has 15 medal events. 9 men s and 6 women s events 5 rifle, 5 pistol, 5 shotgun events 4 air gun events (air rifle & air pistol) Shooting ranked #4 in participating nations in JROTC 3-position air rifle was developed from Olympic rifle events (air rifle standing & 3-position smallbore). 25 Junior Shooting Sports Trophy 26 The American Legion Junior Shooting Sports Program Trophy was established in The trophies are awarded annually to the top performing individual and team in the Sporter and Precision categories competing in the annual USA Shooting National Junior Olympic Air Rifle Championship. Recipients are members of clubs and teams affiliated with The American Legion Junior Shooting Sports Program. Redington Sportsmanship Award 27 The Francis M. Redington Sportsmanship Award was established in May Francis M. Redington was a dedicated Legionnaire who fully supported The American Legion s Americanism programs. He worked tirelessly in support of The American Legion Junior Shooting Program, which was his first love. Francis loyally and faithfully served for twelve years as a Deputy Range Officer on the Junior Air Rifle National Championship staff until his passing in Through his personal dedication and commitment to the Junior Shooting Sports Program, Francis devoted countless hours, often contributing of his own resources to ensure equipment was maintained and materials were available to program and national championship tournament participants. Francis can-do spirit and positive words of encouragement ensured that all Junior Air Rifle National Championship athletes had the opportunity to learn and appreciate sportsmanship and fair play. The National Americanism Commission is authorized to annually present the Francis M. Redington Sportsmanship Award to the athlete competing in The American Legion Junior Air Rifle National Championship who best exemplifies good sportsmanship and fair play. 9
