1 NUMBER OF UTILITY PATENT APPLICATIONS FILED IN THE UNITED STATES, BY COUNTRY OF ORIGIN CALENDAR YEAR 1965 TO PRESENT July 1999 OFFICE FOR PATENT AND TRADEMARK INFORMATION U.S. PATENT AND TRADEMARK OFFICE PK3 - Suite 441 WASHINGTON, DC TEL: (703) / FAX (703) A TECHNOLOGY ASSESSMENT AND FORECAST REPORT
2 NUMBER OF UTILITY PATENT APPLICATIONS FILED IN THE UNITED STATES, BY COUNTRY OF ORIGIN, CALENDAR YEAR 1965 TO PRESENT This report was prepared by the United States Patent and Trademark Office, Technology Assessment and Forecast Program (USPTO/TAF) and contains counts of U.S. patent applications by country of origin. These data were originally compiled by USPTO and reported to the World Intellectual Property Organization (Geneva, Switzerland), for inclusion in their annual publication, Industrial Property Statistics. Data presented in this report depict the number of patent applications received by USPTO and reported to WIPO each year. The country of origin of an application is based on the residence of the first-named inventor. Only utility patent applications are included in the figures for 1975 to the present. Both utility and reissue patent applications are included in the figures for 1965 through A separate count of reissue applications by country of origin is not available for those years, but is estimated to be very small, compared to the number of utility applications. From 1965 to 1974, percent of the summed utility and reissue patent applications were utility applications, based on fiscal year data (see attached table addendum). Country names that appear in this table do not imply any expression of opinion by USPTO about the preferred name or the legal status of any country or territory, or of its authorities. Changes in the geographic boundaries or the legal status of some countries may result in multiple names for the same geographic area. For example, applications from Egypt may also be reported as United Arab Republic, and applications from Rhodesia, South may also be reported as Zimbabwe. For more information about patent data that are available from the USPTO, please contact the Technology Assessment and Forecast Program at 703/ (telephone), 703/ (fax), or write to: USPTO Office for Patent and Trademark Information Technology Assessment and Forecast Program PK-3, Suite 441 Washington, DC 20231
