6 Page 6 The Morning Line Sunday, Sept. 9, 2012 Equestrian Forum of Wellington The Equestrian Forum of Wellington is hosting a meeting tomorrow night Monday September 10th, 2012 at 7 pm at the Utopia restaurant at Polo West, 2470 Greenview Club Drive in Wellington. For questions about the event, Equestrian.Forum@live.com, or call (561) The meeting will be run by members of the Steering Committee: Kathy Mailloux, Terri Kane, Gaye Scarpa, Alexander Zilo, Jack Mancini. Here is a statement from the Group previewing tomorrow s Meeting. Dear Friends of the Equestrian Forum, Cut the chains, kick those barn doors open and take up the reins to champion the issues and causes that impact our community and the thousands of jobs we provide! We want you to be aware that the Equestrian Forum is working on an Equestrian Weather Emergency Plan. The aftermath of Isaac demonstrated the need for such a plan! The goal of the plan is to help make available safe stabling before and after storms hit the area. The plan will provide information on who to contact before and after a storm hits for stabling and transportation. We want to help make sure that for weather emergencies people have information to provide every horse a dry stable and adequate food and care. We also encourage you to attend our meeting Monday evening and that you ask others to do so as well. The topic will be the Equestrian Master Plan that the village is preparing. The Master Plan will be the Village Council s blueprint for regulating OUR industry! It is critical that we are heard! Mike O Dell, the Village s project manager will be making a presentation that will be followed by a Q&A period. Among the many issues that will be addressed during the Master Plan process and that your input is desired are: - Do we want the Village to pursue venues and events that extend the season and expand the diversity of the equestrian industry? Or do we support the Village s recent actions to restrict events to the November-April timeframe? - Do we want permanent, year-round venues with ancillary uses or temporary seasonal venues? - Are there zoning regulations needed regarding stall rentals in residential neighborhoods? Are limits needed on the number of stalls a farm can rent? -Should RV parking be allowed in residential neighborhoods? - What should the trail system look like? - What design and safety improvements are needed for the South Shore/Pierson intersection? - Is a special district needed for more control of the equestrian preserve by equestrians? See below the link to a preliminary report for the Master Plan that was completed last December. Mr. O Dell will be presenting new data and information to us. file/ /master+plan+prelimreport.pdf For additional information: Equestrian.Forum@live.com EQUESTRIAN FORUM OF WELLINGTON MISSION STATEMENT & GOALS The mission of the Equestrian Preserve of Wellington is to protect the Wellington Equestrian Preserve by enhancing equestrian venues and diversifying and enhancing the equestrian industry. Specific goals are: 1) Equestrian events and activities accessible to all residents of Wellington. 2) A year-round equestrian industry with permanent structures. 3) A diversified equestrian industry with both equestrian events and related activities. 4) World-Class venues and competitions including covered and enclosed arenas. 5) Establish Wellington as an international brand. Wellington has reached a threshold wherein we can become a top-tier international equestrian destination and venue. Our two existing equestrian venues, Palm Beach International Equestrian Center (PBIEC) and International Polo Club Palm Beach (IPC), together with some added facilities and amenities, will provide an opportunity to establish Wellington as a premiere international destination. World-class venues are the foundation for attracting world-class competitions that in turn will attract riders, sponsors, vendors, spectators and others from the international equestrian community. Beginning with the development of the original Palm Beach Polo Stadium and continuing to the present, equestrian venues have generated investments in equestrian farms, state-of-the-art horse health facilities, support businesses such as tack and training, and many other businesses. Without our equestrian venues, we would not have a Wellington Equestrian Preserve Area. It is equestrian venues that make equestrian farms feasible. And if there was no value to low density farms, there would be no need for an Equestrian Overlay Zoning District. In both the short and long term, decisions will be made in the public and private sectors that will determine if equestrian sport in Wellington grows while preserving the integrity of the Wellington Equestrian Preserve Area. At present the Village of Wellington is preparing an Equestrian Master Plan. And in the long term the Master Plan, Comprehensive Plan and Equestrian Overlay Zoning District will be implemented and evaluated. For all of this vigilance and involvement by the equestrian community is needed. It is understood that world class equestrian venues make it possible to protect and sustain the WEqPA. Equestrian venues sustain high property values for low density lands in the WEqPA. And it is equestrian venues and their international competitions that have made Wellington an address with panache. The Equestrian forum of Wellington will be an organization that supports the economic, recreational and educational benefits of equestrian sport. The Forum wishes to make the benefits attainable to a broad spectrum of the population. It is also the goal of the Forum to support the diversification of equestrian sport in Wellington to help ensure its long term viability. We wish to see new disciplines locate in Wellington. We wish to bring together equestrians and non-equestrians to help make Wellington the premiere international equestrian venue in the world. Wellington is at the cutting edge equestrian sport. It is a principal of the Forum that the determination of Wellington s needs and the measure of our success be based on self-determined standards. We should not base our equestrian infrastructure needs on what other communities have. Likewise, we should not measure our success against that of others. Rather, our needs and success should be measured by the goals we have set for ourselves. 7 Page 7 The Morning Line Sunday, Sept. 9, 2012 Santa Barbara Polo Club Story by Melanja Jones First round results: Harry East Memorial / 8 goal Parity was the name of the game in the first round of the Harry East Memorial 8 goal games, as both games went to OT and one game went to marathon double OT. On Friday, the father and son Casa Sombras team of Bolko and Conrad Kissling dueled it out with Mansour. The game was even throughout, Casa Sombras looked like they were pulling away in the 5th chukker behind some nice runs from Joseph Stuart, only to see Mansour turn the tables in the 6th and send the game to OT with the score tied at 11 all. In the overtime period, Justin Klentner made a great neck shot to place the ball right in front of goal for Juan Gonzalez, who scored the golden goal for the Mansour victory Not to be outdone, the Film Finances/ Grants Farm and Dark Horse teams had to play two overtime periods to determine a winner! It was the first game in Santa Barbara for Sara Rotman s Dark Horse team, and they put on a great show and came back from two goals down in the 6th chukker to send the game to OT with the score tied 10 all. Despite several shots just wide of goal in the first overtime period, the players were unable to score and grooms were frantically tacking up the 2nd overtime horse. At last, with only 2 minutes remaining in the 2nd overtime, Santiago Wulff drilled a pass to goal that Emma Stachowicz put in to give Film Finances/ Grants Farm the victory. Above, Conrad Kissling.
