I have always had an affinity for cattle and loved helping my father with them when I was a little girl. As I grew older my path moved away from the farm and toward college. After a while I came to a crossroads and had to ask myself one important question, What am I passionate about? The answer came to me clear as a bell, Cattle! I did a lot of thinking and research and it certainly paid off because I found the right breed. When I was growing up, my father had a commercial herd of crossbred beef cows, of which the Simmental crosses were my favorite. I came across Fleckvieh cattle and knew immediately I had found the right breed for me to begin my program. I believe in preserving something of value, and Fleckvieh breeders are very dedicated to preserving integrity and history of the breed. When it came time to attend the first sale in my search to find a Fleckvieh for me, I asked my father and my husband, Brian, to join me in traveling to Russellville, AR., to attend the QUEST X sale in 2009 at Kent Dollar s farm, Dollar s Diamond D. My father had been out of the cattle business for several years and my husband had never been around cattle. I knew that my father felt the same instinct as I do about cattle and it showed when I purchased my first heifer. She was a Double Bar D Makem Polled x DDD Kims Celebration (a full sister to DDD Broadway). It was a very exciting time, and I think about it often! We actually lost her first calf, but she is bred back right now. Since then we have bought five more foundation heifers, and we currently have four heifer calves on the ground, for a total of 10 females. The heifer calves are out of Evolution, Molson, Sunny Valley Sargent and Gibby s Ultimate. We are still in the early stages, but interest is growing in our cattle in our area. In northern Illinois there is an unending visual background of black cattle. For people driving by and seeing something a little different out in a pasture, it strikes their interest. Once you explain all the highlights the breed has to offer it really gets them enthused. Our goal at Oak Park Farm is to breed balanced cattle with a variety of genetics. I also believe everyone has their own opinion, and you have to stick with cattle you like for reasons that are important to you. My intentions in this column were to not only express how important the cattle are to me, but to acknowledge the support my father has given me. In my 27 years, I had never seen my father venture more than a couple hours from our farm. When I told him how much I wanted him to come to the 2009 QUEST he didn t hesitate. Also, that following January (I was working in Georgia at the time) my father flew down to Mississippi for the 2010 Magnolia Classic at Little Creek Farm in Starkville. He knew how important it was to me and went gladly. I know he had only been on a plane once or twice in his life and that was long before I was born. I worked in Georgia for a year and during that time my father watched over the cattle. He took out acres of old fence and over grown tree lines so that when I got back home we were ready to put up the new fencing. He got up during the night to check heifers that were close to calving. I am thankful my days away from home are over! We have a long road ahead of us, but we are starting to see the fruits of our labor. The farm is transforming, the cattle numbers are growing and a lot of new friendships have been made. Before the cows, my father and I didn t talk much about the future. Now, we are setting goals for the next five to ten years. I suppose you don t reach the peak of the mountain by running, you have to take steps. I can say that in the midst, I am enjoying the climb. I feel blessed not only to have a passion, but to share the same passion with my father. My family has stood behind me 100% and that means the world to me. 56 September 2011
