The eni FIM Superbike World Championship heads into its 28th season, having established a new competing era of an affordable series in which the main purpose is that teams are even more equal in order to greater ensure close battles leading to the title-deciding round. This also allows high-level teams and riders coming from important national championships to step up to World Superbike as a wildcard and being competitive on track, as well as the 14 permanent teams representing eight manufacturers in The beginning It all started in April 1988 at Donington Park in England. It was the beginning of it all, and it is a credit to the staying power and fascination of the championship that many of the people who were around at that time are still enthusiasts to this day. The first two SBK championships were won by Honda s remarkable RC30, a V4 harmony of high tech racing luxury, particularly in the hands of American Fred Merkel and 1989 were his golden years. After being beaten to the title twice, in 1990 Ducati won the first of their riders titles, thanks to Frenchman Raymond Roche. And even the privateers got into the winning act when American tuning house Fast By Ferracci and Doug Polen took their own Ducati and made it fly all the way to two world titles in a row, 1991 and 92. Scott Russell and Muzzy Kawasaki scorched their hopped-up Kawasaki ZX750R streetbike to the first across-the-frame four championship, in 1993, holding off Carl Fogarty s Ducati. The Fogarty Era The 1994 and 1995 championships, however, went to a rider who would make himself the most successful SBK combatant of all time King Carl Fogarty. Ducati s latest wonder-twin, the 916, powered him to his first championship win, in a season when the first full-on works team from HRC brought along its amazing RC45. The inclusion of the world s largest motorcycle manufacturer in the paddock in factory form was a boost for the now well-established World Superbike series, and accelerated the technology war inside the increasingly busy SBK paddock. Suzuki joined with a full-factory effort in 1996, but it was a semi-private machine, the Power Horse Ducati of Troy Corser, that won the title, despite the 955cc Ducati losing its previous weight advantage. Even going faster than the GP bikes was possible in 1997, in qualifying at Donington, thanks to Corser and his 955. Another major landmark in Superbike history unfolded in 1997, when John Kocinski won the title for Honda on their HRC backed RC45. Carl Fogarty scored championships three and four in

and 1999 the latter of which produced another tough competitor to deal with - Aprilia. The Foggy era ended dramatically in the second race of the 2000 season at Phillip Island when he crashed out after colliding with another rider in the wet, damaging his shoulder joint so badly that he finally had to admit defeat and retire from the sport. But a twin-cylinder machine still won in the 1000cc VTR1000SP-W twin - a radical departure for Honda - but a winner first season out. A famous name from the early years of World Superbike, Bimota, made a race winning re-appearance in 2000 with Aussie wild-child Anthony Gobert. Bayliss rises to the top It was another Italian twin-cylinder manufacturer which played the biggest part in Beaten at their own vee-twin game by a similar Honda machine, Ducati came out fighting in 2001, and Troy Bayliss recorded the first of his eventual three world titles. Another Italian marque with an evocative name came back into being in Benelli - even though it was not to be a long SBK life. In 2002, arguably the greatest man-to-man finale of all time (between long-time points leader Bayliss and fast-finisher Edwards) saw Colin and Honda s vee-twin back in control of the championship at the final flag. With changes in the Grand Prix world precipitating the exodus of some works efforts, it was almost all change for World Superbike in 2003, a championship finally won by Neil Hodgson (Fila Ducati). For the first time, fourcylinder Superbikes were allowed to run up to 1000cc engines in 03, albeit with power-limiting air-restrictors fitted to their intakes, to keep them on parity with the theoretically less powerful 1000cc twins. The all-new Petronas FP-1 also arrived on track that year. A radical experiment in attempting to start at the top and then working down, the three-cylinder 900cc machine proved to be difficult to compete with in top-level Superbike racing, and it could only take a couple of podium finishes before its end in Pirelli has been the single tyre manufacturer for all classes in the World Superbike paddock since 2004 and the benefits have been both immediate and long reaching. With every rider, team and manufacturer being exposed to the same choices of tyres, who wins races is no longer determined by where you are in the pecking order for race-winning rubber - as it is all potentially race winning rubber. The evenness of the 2004 tyre and technical regulations had an immediate effect, and in the first season privateers got access to the 999 Ducatis the factory team didn t have any significant advantage. Eventually, another classic man-to-man fight for the championship made James Toseland the youngest conqueror of all time at 23 - and a true product of World Superbike. 12

The first 1000cc four-cylinder champion was crowned in 2005, Troy Corser taking the title his second, nine years after his first for Alstare Corona Extra Suzuki. A return to SBK racing for one of the all-time greats, Troy Bayliss, proved an instant success and he took his second title in 2006, this time on the Ducati 999. In 2007 the World Superbike Championship passed through its 20th year of existence and James Toseland (Honda) scored his second title, by just 2 points from Noriyuki Haga (Yamaha), with Max Biaggi (Suzuki) and Troy Bayliss (Ducati) only slightly further adrift. For 2011, the similarly experienced Carlos Checa (Althea Racing Ducati) showed why SBK is different from the rest when he won the championship for a well-supported private team. Riders on Aprilia, Honda, Kawasaki and Yamaha machinery also won races, with Suzuki, BMW and two other Ducati riders also joining the podium party at some stage. Max Biaggi (Aprilia) bowed out from racing in 2012, the Italian legend clinching his sixth world title and his second in SBK with a half-point victory over Tom Sykes, the closest ever in SBK history. Nine different winners, including three rookies, graced the stage in a fitting 25th anniversary year for World Superbike. One year later, with new 1200cc capacity rules for twin-cylinder machines, Bayliss (Ducati) took his third WSBK crown and retired at the very top, bringing another era of SBK to a finish - just as another had started. The recent years Yamaha, such stalwarts in SBK since the first races, finally joined the rest of the top SBK competitors in 2009, when rookie Ben Spies took his official R1 - cross-plane firing order and all - to the Riders Championship. In 2010 the seven competing manufacturers were all even better placed to score results than at any time for maybe 20 years and six of the seven put at least one rider on the podium throughout the campaign. Aprilia and Max Biaggi were worthy champions, netting double figure race wins and the title was wrapped up at the penultimate round in Imola. Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team) had his redemption the following year by clinching his first World Superbike title at the end of a spectacular 2013 season. The Brit won nine races and defeated the works Aprilia duo of Eugene Laverty and Sylvain Guintoli, bringing back Kawasaki on top of the world after 20 long years. Laverty had also nine race victories, but the too many DNFs didn t help him throughout the title chase, while the Italian brand was able to clinch the manufacturers title for the second year in a row. On his second year with the official Aprilia RSV4, Sylvain Guintoli was crowned 2014 World Superbike Champion, after being keen throughout the whole season and following his first double victory at the very last round, in Qatar. The Frenchman sealed the title by 6 points ahead defending Champion Tom Sykes, who scored 8 wins again on the Kawasaki Racing Team s Ninja, 13

followed by Jonathan Rea (Pata Honda World Superbike Team). Guintoli and team-mate Marco Melandri (overall 4th) secured the 4th title for Aprilia whithin the last five years, with five and six wins, respectively and despite the controversial discussion regarding team orders at Aprilia. World Supersport, as the springboard to World Superbike for mid-sized bikes (600cc for four-cylinders and up to 675cc for triples), will secure again this year exciting action on track for both youngsters and experienced riders: 22 permanent riders representing 11 Countries, coming from different world level competitions. Supersport races at SBK meetings were at a European level until 1997, when it first became the World Supersport Series and then an FIM Championship in World Series Champions Paolo Casoli (Ducati in 1997) and Fabrizio Pirovano (Suzuki in 1998) were strong protagonists in 1999 but it was another rider with grit and flair who took the inaugural FIM title Stephane Chambon (Suzuki). The champion in 2000 proved to be Jörg Teuchert (Yamaha) and in its third year of life in 2001 World Supersport got its third different champion (Andrew Pitt), on a third different type of machine (Kawasaki). Title four came with Frenchman Fabien Foret to the fore, riding the last of the old-style Honda CBR600FS bikes in His win came for Ten Kate Honda, and it sparked off a run of championship success for Honda and the Dutchmen that carried on into Chris Vermeulen took the title in 2003, then his countryman Karl Muggeridge in 2004, before another Frenchman, Sebastien Charpentier, made history by becoming the first rider to win the championship in successive seasons, 2005 and In 2007 Turkish rider Kenan Sofuoglu took his first and Honda s sixth straight Riders Championship. After an epic 2008 season, Andrew Pitt became the second rider in history to win two full WSS titles, this time on a Ten Kate Honda. After this long period of high-speed stability, Supersport was blown wide open in 2009, with Honda, Yamaha, Kawasaki and Triumph riders all taking podium finishes, and two new names, Cal Crutchlow and Eugene Laverty, becoming stars. Crutchlow was champion for Yamaha, overcoming privateer Laverty. In 2010 the championship went back to Sofuoglu and Ten Kate Honda, but only after an epic scrap between three riders for most of the year. Lascorz, riding for the official Kawasaki team, was in the mix until he got badly injured at Silverstone, leaving Laverty (Parkalgar Honda) and Sofuoglu to fight for the title. It came down to the last race, and although Laverty won eight races, Sofuoglu took the crown by a few points. The 2011 season saw Chaz Davies (ParkinGO Yamaha) 14

15

overcome a difficult start to score wins in half the races and secure the championship in clear style, although riders on Kawasaki and Honda machines, plus Davies team-mate Luca Scassa, also took race wins. In 2012 Kenan Sofuoglu returned to Supersport for the Lorenzini Kawasaki team and clinched his third title to become the most successful rider ever in the series. It wasn t easy however as he was pushed hard all the way by rookie Jules Cluzel (PTR Honda) from France and his team-mate Sam Lowes. In 2013 Jules Cluzel made the move up to World Superbike and for defending Champion Sofuoglu this time on the ZX-6R of Mahi Racing Team India - the contending rider was again wellknown Sam Lowes. The Brit moved to the Yamaha of Yakhnich Motorsport and was able to snatch the title away from the Turk, after an unforgettable season of unbelievable overtakings and manoeuvres to the limit. The 2014 season saw the comeback of Frenchman Jules Cluzel to the mid-sized bikes, the departure of Sam Lowes to Moto2 and the retire from WSBK of Fabien Foret. Experienced and moderate Kenan Sofuoglu had a struggling season, moved to a new team before the end of the season, finishing 8th and leaving it all clear to new title contender, Dutch Michael van der Mark on his second year aboard the PATA Honda World Supersport Team s CBR600RR. The 2012 STK600 Champion clinched his first World Title with six wins, four seconds and thirst for victory. Cluzel on the MV Agusta F3 675 closed second ahead of fellow countryman Florian Marino (Kawasaki Intermoto Ponyexpres). In 2015 the age limit for FIM Superstock 1000cc Cup applicants increased to 28 years. Therefore, licenses for STK1000 are issued to riders who can be up to two years older than normal. First implemented right back in 1999, the European Superstock 1000 Championship was always designed for young riders on full capacity machinery. British riders held sway in the early years, with Karl Harris (Suzuki) and then James Ellison (Honda and Suzuki) the winners. As Superstock got more serious, bigger teams made a bigger impact and Vittorio Iannuzzo secured the 2002 title for Suzuki. Another Suzuki win followed in 2003, with another Italian - Michel Fabrizio - on board. Lorenzo Alfonsi was the first Yamaha man to take the crown in 2004, and by the time Belgium s Didier Vankeymeulen (Yamaha) had won the series in 2005 and Alessandro Polita (Suzuki) followed it up in 2006, it had been given FIM Cup status. In 2007 the new Ducati 1098 won first time out, after an epic season in the hands of Niccolò Canepa. An astonishing season finale in 2008 saw Brendan Roberts win for Ducati, but any of four riders could have taken the crown. In 2009 Xavier Simeon did the impossible by winning the title with a round to spare, again on a Ducati. BMW took a historic championship success in 2010, with BMW Motorrad Italia rider Ayrton Badovini scoring nine wins out of ten on the remarkable S1000RR. 16

In 2011 the championship swung back towards a small phalanx of Ducati riders, with Althea Racing s Davide Giugliano blitzing his way to a clear title win. Success headed back BMW Italia s way in 2012, with Sylvain Barrier taking the title from Eddi La Marra on the new Ducati Panigale. The Frenchman was then able to clinch the second title in a row, on the HP4 of BMW Motorrad GoldBet STK Team, followed by Niccolò Canepa (Barni Racing Team Ducati) and Jeremy Guarnoni (MRS Kawasaki). All the three riders on top of the standings stepped up to WSBK for Historical results for Leandro Tati Mercado (Barni Racing Team Ducati) in the 2014 edition of the FIM Superstock 1000 Cup: the 22-year-old from Cordoba became the first Argentinean rider to ever achieve an international title in motorcycle racing. Mercado won by eight points an epic battle concluded at last race s last corner against Italian Lorenzo Savadori (Team Pedercini Kawasaki). Third finisher, Matthieu Lussiana from France on board Team GARNIER s Kawasaki ZX-10R. Italian Barni Racing Team put their effort in supporting Tati to compete in World SBK this year. FIM Europe Superstock 600 European Championship, which is now reserved for under-24s on 600cc machinery, came into existence in First year winner Claudio Corti (Yamaha) and second season champion Xavier Simeon (Suzuki) both made themselves stars at an early age. Maxime Berger (Yamaha) proved to be the champion in 2007, while the remarkable 15-year-old Loris Baz (Yamaha) secured the title in Gino Rea (Honda) won the crown in 2009 for Honda, while Jeremy Guarnoni took the glory for Yamaha in 2010, in a great fight with Florian Marino. In 2011 a three-way fight between Jed Metcher (Yamaha), Joshua Day (Kawasaki) and Michael van der Mark (Honda) finished in that order, after a seesaw season went all the way to the wire. Michael van der Mark (Honda) made amends in 2012 after a close scrap with Riccardo Russo (Yamaha), which went all the way to the end, the Dutchman and the Italian sharing all ten wins between them. They both made the move up to WSS and in 2013 the battle in the series was much more wide-open. An incredible season saw Franco Morbidelli winning the title in the last race against fellow Italian Alessandro Nocco, his team-mate, and Christian Gamarino, the three of them on the Kawasaki ZX-6R. With Reigning Champion Morbidelli moving to Moto2, San Carlo Team Italia s new star of the season was Marco Faccani, who won the title by 43 remarkable points ahead of Dutch Wayne Tessels 17

on a Suzuki GSX-R600, and his team-mate and fellow Italian Andrea Tucci, only 10 points behind. In 2015 Faccani makes the step up to the FIM Supersport World Championship, along with San Carlo Puccetti Racing Team. Duke for the EJC machines and Austrian Lukas Wimmer won this edition. In 2013 the one-make series jumped onboard the Honda CBR 500 R and got the name of Pata Honda European Junior Cup, when New Zealand s Jake Lewis finished the season on top of the standings. On the same bike, in 2014 Spaniard Augusto Fernandez became the latest EJC winner. The PATA European Junior Cup, powered by Honda, is the entry level class to the eni FIM Superbike World Championship. Open to 14 to 21-year-old male racers and 14 to 23-year-old female racers from around the world, the 2015 European Junior Cup sees the racers competing on identically-prepared Honda CBR 650 F machinery at some of the most iconic and spectacular racing circuits in Europe, being a feature on the programme at eight WSBK rounds. The series goal is to provide a fun and affordable competition which allows the young riders to showcase their talent and develop the skills necessary for a career at World Championship level. 18 Starting in 2011 under the name of European Junior Cup, the competition was held that year with all-kawasaki Ninja 250cc bikes and the winner was Matt Davies of Australia. In 2012 the entry level to the production-based series changed from green to orange, as KTM released a pumped-up version of its 690

REGULATIONS The following are excerpts and outlines of the full Road Racing FIM Superbike & Supersport World Championships and FIM Superstock Cup Regulations, which are available at: As the regulations can change during the season, we strongly advise that you only use the following text as it is intended - as a pocket guide to some of the new regulations that were brought in at the start of this year. Please consult the FIM website for the most comprehensive and up-to-date Regulations. 1 Sporting Regulations 1.18 START PROCEDURE Should there be a problem that might prejudice safety for the start, of the warm up lap or the race the Starter will invoke one of the following procedures 17.1 START DELAYED (same as 2014); 17.2 START DELAYED RAIN A red flag is waved from the Starter s rostrum and the red light stays on. The Start Delayed Rain board is displayed from the Starter s rostrum and a marshal will wave a yellow flag at each row of the starting grid from the signaling platform. Riders must stay in their grid position, engines must be switched off. After display of the Start Delayed Rain board, a maximum of 5 mechanics per rider is allowed on the grid. Works on bike are allowed. Only essential officials are allowed on the grid, no media, guests, umbrella-holders or other team personnel will be permitted, with the exception of authorised camera crew(s). The start procedure will be re-commenced at the 5 minutes board. 3-Minute Board procedure on the grid ( ). 1-Minute Board on the grid: The mechanics will assist the rider to start the machine and then vacate the grid. 30-Second Board on the grid: All riders must be in position on the grid with engines running. No further assistance from mechanics is permitted. ( ) After the sighting lap the start procedure will be recommenced at the 5 minutes board. The race distance will be reduced by one lap if the Start Delayed Rain signal is after the sighting lap and by two laps if it is declared after the warm up lap START DELAYED BOX A red flag is waved from the Starter s rostrum and the red light stays on. The Start Delayed Box board is displayed from the Starter s rostrum and a marshal will wave a yellow flag at each row of the starting grid from the signaling platform. Engines must be switched off. After display of the Start Delayed Box board, a maximum of 2 mechanics per rider is 27

allowed on the grid to help riders to take the bike into the garages. Race Direction will communicate the new Event schedule on the Official Time keeping monitors INTERRUPTION OF A RACE (as per 2014 Regulations) If the results calculated show that less than three laps have been completed by the leader of the race and by all other riders on the same lap as the leader, then the race will be null and void and a new race will be run according to the article RE-STARTING A RACE THAT HAS BEEN INTERRUPTED Conditions for the re-started race will be as follows: ( ) c) The number of laps of the second race will be the number of laps required to complete two-thirds of the original race distance rounded down to the nearest whole number of laps with a minimum of onethird of the original race distance rounded up. The decision is at the discretion of Race Control respecting schedules Should a re-started race be interrupted and Race Direction deems it possible to re-start, then the conditions for a further re-start will follow Art , with the race distance and results defined as follows: a) If the re-started race is interrupted when 5 or more laps have been completed, the race will be deemed to have been completed and full Championship points awarded. The race classification will be according to Art ii) e) b) If the re-started race is interrupted when less than 5 laps have been completed, the race would be re-started a further time if possible, for the same number of laps as the first restart. c) If that further re-started race (third race) is interrupted when less than 5 laps have been completed, Race Direction will determine if it is practical to re-start the race and will define the number of laps to be completed, with a minimum of 5 laps. If it has been not possible to re-schedule the race the race results will then be determined by the first part of the race and full Championship points awarded, provided that in the first part of the race 5 laps or more had been completed. d) If the first race is re-started and none of the races (original or subsequent re-starts) have completed 5 or more laps, then the race is deemed to be cancelled and no Championship points will be awarded. e) Race Direction may reschedule re-started races in the race programme as necessary. 2 Technical Regulations ENGINE SEALING a) The total number of engines that a rider may use during the entire championship is limited the allocated number. When a permanent rider changes teams during the championship their engine limit will not change. b) The total number of engines that a team may use during the entire Championship is limited to the allocated number 28

per permanent entry. When a permanent rider is replaced or substituted during the Championship, the total engine allocation for the teams entry will not change. Should a new team enter the championship part way through the season the number of engines allowed will be proportional to the season remaining. c) Wild card riders (and one event riders) will be allowed to use two (2) sealed engines during the event in which they take part. Should the same rider choose to enter a second meeting as a wildcard, one (1) extra engine will be added. For any further entries the rider and/or team will be considered a permanent entry. d) Should the number of race meetings change during the season then the Superbike Commission will convene to consider updating the number of allocated engines. e) A team or rider that uses more than the allocated number of engines during the Championship will receive a penalty (according to Art ). (...) u) If an engine is found not to be in compliance with the regulations, any penalties imposed will apply retrospectively to each race this engine was used in ENGINE INSPECTION a) When any engine is unsealed and stripped for inspection following a protest and found to be fully compliant with the rule(s) which is (are) the subject of the protest(s), then the team will be given one additional seal allocation to reseal the rebuilt engine OR a new engine. b) The FIM Technical Director, Race Direction or the Permanent Officials (FIM Stewards) reserve the right to suspend any technical engine protest if it is felt to be a violation of the above rule. That engine will then be stripped at end of life. c) When an engine has reached an agreed end of life then the Technical Director may at his discretion choose to have that engine stripped to check for compliance. d) If any engine is found to have been opened or its seals removed or if any (sealed) engine is inspected by the technical director or his appointed staff and found to be in breach of the technical rules the rider will be disqualified from ALL races when this engine was used. The points earned will be removed in the riders championship and if applicable the manufacturers championship AIR RESTRICTORS FOR 1200CC 2 CYLINDERS Application: Only the 1200cc 2-cylinder engines may be fitted with air restrictor.
