Charlotte Curlin, Editor VJ Scarpaci, Editor October 2015 Welcome everyone to a brand new school year! You know what a new school year means? A new Buzz team! This year, the Buzz co-editors are Charlotte Curlin and VJ Scarpaci. Our 5 th grade staff columnists are: Ana Varela, Michael Frid, Rafael Pena, Nicole Barone, Nyarai Masoni, Emily Lu, and our two fourth graders Noelle Curlin and Nico Pena. In this very first edition of The Buzz, Ahlyssa Gomez and Cooper Keane are contributing articles about Staten Island s first Ferris wheel and supermoons! This year is going to be filled with important (but fun) information; who said you couldn t be a part of it?! We will have a suggestions box on our safety agent, Mr. Robert s, desk entitled Buzz Box. The purpose of the box is for everyone to contribute an article that will be in The Buzz by simply putting your article in this box. You can also contribute by sending us your article via at cjcurlin1@gmail.com. All ideas are welcome don t be shy about coming to us to share your thoughts! By Nikki Barone, BOO! Happy Halloween everyone! Halloween is the best holiday of them all! My favorite part of Halloween is dressing up and decorating! For Halloween you can be a zombie, a mummy, a witch, a princess, a wizard or a ninja. I love decorating and making my house super scary. But EVERY KIDS FAVORITE PART IS CANDY!!!! Trick or treating is an awesome part too! You get to see all your friends and have fun with them! In conclusion, I think we could all agree that Halloween is the best holiday ever!!! ENJOY READING THE BUZZ? Check us out on ps35pta.com to read this edition and find important school information.
The New York Wheel By Ahlyssa Gomez, Hello Staten Islanders! I have some exciting news for you. Did you know the New York Wheel is coming to Staten Island in 2017? Staten Island will now have a major attraction for tourist and all New Yorkers. It s called the New York Wheel. This is a 630 foot tall giant Ferris wheel unlike no other in the world. The New York Wheel is a Ferris wheel that will accommodate up to 1,440 people per ride. Plus it will be welcoming as many as 30,000 visitors per day and an anticipated 4 million visitors per year. It will be located right by the ferry, so it will be convenient for everyone. The Ferris wheel will be opened 7 days a week and approximately 365 days a year. This is exciting because it will attract more people to Staten Island. Did you know that Staten Island is known as the forgotten borough? Well, now it won t be because we will have the New York Wheel as a landmark. The Ferris wheel isn t just for fun it s for observation and learning as well. The Wheel Terminal Building will offer educational exhibitions on New York City history. Atop of the wheel you will be able to see things like the Statue of Liberty, the Freedom tower, and breathtaking views of the river. But you can also have fun with family, and friends while shopping and eating in the new shopping mall that will also be built. The New York Wheel will attract so many people and Staten Island will be full of excitement. The Ferris wheel ticket prices will be $25-$30 just for a 38- minute ride. Now that s a price worth riding for! Guess how many people ride the Staten Island Ferry now? 2 MILLION! So many more people will come just for the New York Wheel. People from all around the world will fly to NYC and cross over to Staten Island, just to ride the New York Ferris Wheel. The New York Wheel will get a lot of publicity and everyone will come experience it. Staten Island will be filled with people from all over the world. The New York Wheel will give Staten Island a chance of becoming well known like Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx. The New York Wheel will be a good place for children to have fun. Children will have a great time! I know I would have the best time of my life. Even though I am afraid of heights I would still like to have a new experience. And I know you do too. Will you dare or are you scared to ride the wheel?
All Hallows Eve An Original Poem by Nyarai Masoni, Halloween, what a time To scare young and old alike It s time for fun and full of games A horror filled night of screams and squeals All the fears of monster ghouls Are smoothed with candy treats Everyone goes out to play And get scared out of their wits Children relish the chance to play And stay out beyond bedtime Going around from house to house From scary place to place To witness the scarecrow on night watch Clothes flapping in the wind; Its eyes following every step to the creepy house gate They daintily approach the scary door Hearts pounding, ears ringing In the eerie Halloween night They knock on the scary adorned entrance Expecting to be scared out of their senses Trick or treat they shout in sync When the door opens with a creek There stands a man with a goblin mask Holding a basket full of treats He holds out the basket And let the children choose From an array of sweet smelling candy They choose the chocolate and the candy corn Tonight our sleep will be full of ghosts And horrors fueled by candy A night of dreams Being chased by ghosts We all feel sadness When Halloween passes Because we can t get enough of candy But don t despair because next year will come Another chance for a candy binge.
Finding Water on Mars! By Emily Lu, Scientists from NASA have made an amazing discovery: at one time, Mars had been covered with many, many rivers and lakes! (It could be a good discovery maybe not depending on how you look at it.) Scientists think the water on Mars evaporated because of how small the planet is, how little gravity there is, and a thin atmosphere. The question is: where did all that water go? Well, more and more of the water evaporated into space allowing less water to fall back to the planet. Scientists have discovered ice caps at the north and south poles, which if melted could cover the entire planet with about 18 feet of water. The water beds on Mars don t run wet, but scientists can use the information left to study and learn how the planet developed and detect any life on the Red Planet. Supermoons By Cooper Keane, A supermoon is a once in a lifetime sight. They occur 4 times a year but are not seen by most people living on flat parts of land. During a supermoon the moon will appear to be larger than usual and red or orange. A supermoon is a lot like a lunar eclipse. Just like a lunar eclipse, the moon will be passing through earth s penumbra. Earth s penumbra is like a rainbow behind the earth caused by light that curves around the Earth. The middle color (also the only color we can see) is red. During a supermoon, the moon will get closer to the earth making it appear larger. The light from Earth s penumbra will also make the moon appear red or orange. Our last supermoon was on September 28 th.
Sequoia Trees By Michael Frid, As all of you know, trees grow all over the world. Then how can you explain the fact that millions of people visit the General Sherman tree every year. Especially since it is not the tallest, not the widest and not the oldest tree in the world, not even in the country! The reason that so many people visit it is that it has the greatest volume. A whole 55,000 sq. feet!!!! This is how this tree is so incredible. This tree is a Giant Sequoia tree, (Sequoia Dendron giganteum). The oldest Giant Sequoia that is still growing is 3,200 years old (General Sherman is still young, only 2,300 years old). But even after that the trees stay intact. A Giant Sequoia decay s LONGER THAN IT GROWS! For example, few giant trees in Grant s Grove have fallen 1000 years ago or more. One reason that they live so long is that they are fire resistant and they can heal when injured. Even though fire harms most trees, Giant Sequoias enjoy it. Tannic acid in the bark protects the tree and the fire helps to open sequoia pinecones. They can now regenerate. The soil is cleared and the seeds are out, now a new sequoia can begin its life! Hooray! As you can see, this tree is AMAZING!
Odell Beckham Jr. And Stephen Curry By Nico Pena, I m sure most of you out there love sports. Sports like football and basketball. Maybe some of the boys want to be in the NFL or NBA when they grow up. I will be talking about two athletes in different sports. My partner, Noelle Curlin will be writing about woman s sports for all the girls. First let s start with the NFL. Have your ever heard of Odell Beckham Jr? He is a wide receiver for the New York Giants. He was drafted last season from Louisiana State University (LSU). Although he is only 22 years old, he is extremely talented. Did you see that catch he made last season? He caught the ball with one hand as he fell back into the end zone to score a touchdown. It was incredible! But it s not just football; he is also good at basketball and baseball. He can make crazy dunks and throw a 90 mile per hour pitch. I can t wait to see what he does this season. Next is NBA. Have you ever heard of Stephen Curry? He is a point guard for the Golden State Warriors. When he was in Davidson College, everyone doubted him. They said he was too small and was no good. Yet he still made it to the NBA. Slowly but surely he got better and better. Look at him now he has crazy handles, is an amazing shooter and a great player. I think Odell Beckham Jr. and Stephen Curry are good role models. They are good role models because, first usually wide receivers are tall so they have an advantage at catching. Yet Odell, only at 5 11 is short but is still a really good wide receiver. You have to be tough to play football. He is short but tough. Stephen Curry is a good role model because he shows never to give up. In college everyone doubted him. They said he was no good and too short. Yet he made it to the NBA and is a great player. Now I think you can see Odell Beckham Jr. and Stephen Curry are great athletes and role models. When I grow up I want to be in the NFL or NBA. I m sure a lot of other kids want to too. I know some boys wanted me to do baseball. Maybe next time!
Carli Lloyd By Noelle Curlin, I hope you all saw the Women s FIFA World Cup! If you didn t, I want to introduce you to soccer superstar Carli Lloyd. As the MVP, Carli Lloyd was the midfielder who scored a hat trick to win the final game in the World Cup. A hat trick is when a player scores three goals in a game. One of her goals in the hat trick was from half field! WOW! I wish I was like Carli Lloyd - a sensational professional soccer player. If you want to learn more about Carli, read on! Carli Lloyd was born July 16, 1982 in Delran, New Jersey. Carli started to play co-ed soccer with boys when she was 5 years old. Her mother Pam Lloyd said of her daughter, she always loved it and showed a lot of ability from an early age, but she also has always worked hard. All of her hard work payed off: In 2008 she was named the U.S Soccer Player of the Year In 2012 she was one of Glamour s Women of the Year In 2013 she was named Rutgers University Hall of Distinguished Alumni In 2015 she was the first player on the Women s National Team s (WNT) history to score in four games in a row; she became the first women in FIFA Women s World cup to score a hat trick in a final game; she is a Golden Ball Winner and World Cup Champion. In addition to the awards above, Carli is a two-time Olympic gold medalist who scored the winning goals in the finals of both the 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympics. Lloyd credits a lot of her success to her coach James Galanis who trains her every day, even on holidays! Carli Lloyd is a world class role model for soccer players and athletes from all sports. When I grow up and become a professional soccer player, I want to be like Carli Lloyd - she is my idol! Last week I was a ball girl for the Rutgers University Women s Soccer team. Here s a picture of me standing under the sign that honors Carli Lloyd s legacy at the RU soccer stadium, Yurcak Field.
