The Red Raiders enter the weekend at 8-15 overall and 1-6 so far in league play while Baylor currently sits at overall and 2-5 in conference action. AROUND THE NET The Red Raiders will be looking to end the first half of Big 12 play with a win Saturday for the first time since 2005 when the Red Raiders topped Texas A&M in five sets on Oct. 22 at home. A win over Baylor would give Texas Tech two wins through the first half of Big 12 play, which would be the program s most at this point in a season since 2006 when the Red Raiders were 2-6 in what was then an 11-team league. Saturday s match with Baylor will mark the 74th all-time meeting between the two schools who have met each season in all but one year since The Baylor series is the second-longest running series for Texas Tech against an opponent. Texas Tech has historically dominated the series with Baylor as the Red Raiders will be looking for their 50th all-time victory over the Bears Saturday afternoon. Tech enters the weekend all-time against Baylor, including a 25-9 mark in matches played in Lubbock. Despite trailing significantly in the overall series, Baylor has controlled the match-up as of late, winning 15 of the previous 16 contests, including a pair of 3-1 victories over the Red Raiders a year ago. Texas Tech went into the intermission tied with the Bears in both matches last year, only for Baylor to come back from the break and win the next two sets. The Red Raiders ended the 2011 series on a winning note with a 3-2 victory that marked Don Flora s first Big 12 win in his Texas Tech tenure. Breeann David has been Texas Tech s most successful player in recent years against Baylor as the junior is averaging nearly three kills per set after totaling 47 career kills against the Bears, including 17 in the series finale a year ago in Lubbock. David has also recorded 21 digs and 10 blocks in her four matches all-time against Baylor. The Red Raiders are currently riding a three-match losing streak after falling to New Mexico in straight sets Wednesday night at the United Spirit Arena. Tech, which last won Oct. 12 in a five-set thriller at TCU, has dropped its last five matches at home, falling to 2-6 this year inside the USA. Baylor is coming off a 3-1 victory Wednesday night at home over Kansas State, which moved the Bears into a four-way tie for fifth place in the Big 12 standings entering this weekend. 3 TEXAS TECH AND BAYLOR - THE SERIES The Red Raiders will be looking for win No. 50 over Baylor on Saturday afternoon as Texas Tech enters the weekend all-time against the Bears. It will be the 74th all-time meeting between the two schools which is the second-longest running series for Texas Tech against an opponent. The Red Raiders have faced Baylor in all but one season (1981) since 1976 with Texas Tech controlling a 25-9 advantage in matches played in Lubbock. Baylor has controlled the series in recent years, though, winning 15 of the last 16 contests, including a pair of 3-1 victories a year ago. BRUMMITT ON PACE FOR YET ANOTHER MEMORABLE SEASON After such a memorable debut in scarlet and black a year ago, it may seem difficult to picture Rachel Brummitt duplicating or even surpassing her record-setting numbers from The junior is well on her way to doing that, though, as she is currently on pace to surpass the 510 digs she recorded a year ago. Brummitt enters this week with 439 digs, her exact total through 26 matches a year ago, over 83 total sets, three fewer than from the 2012 season when she had 385 digs through 23 matches. She is averaging 5.29 digs per set which ranks second in the Big 12 this year and is almost a full dig higher than her average at this point a year ago. Brummitt has finished with 20 or more digs 11 times already this year, including a season-high 29 on Sept. 7 against Eastern Washington. She has been in double digits for digs in all but one of Tech s matches this season as well. BRUMMITT S PERFORMANCE DURING THE 2012 & 2013 SEASONS Season SP Digs Per Set 2013 Through 23 matches Through 23 matches Through 24 matches Through 25 matches Through 26 matches BRUMMITT CLOSING IN ON 1,000 CAREER DIGS In addition to nearing her single-season school record for digs a year ago, Rachel Brummitt is closing in on 1,000 digs for her career as the junior libero enters the Baylor match with 949 in almost two seasons. The Plano, Texas could approach the career category for digs by the end of the year as Ginger Carter currently sits in 10th place all-time after recording 1,092 digs from Lisa Hilgers is the Texas Tech all-time leader in digs as she totaled 1,583 over her four seasons in RED RAIDERS ONE OF TOP DIGGING TEAMS IN THE COUNTRY In the midst of an injury-filled season, one thing has remained constant for the Red Raiders - their ability to dig. Led by standout libero Rachel Brummitt, Texas Tech entered this week ranked 33rd in the country and second in the Big 12 Conference with a digs per set average. Brummitt has been the driving force behind Tech s defensive success as the junior is averaging 5.29 digs per set, an average that ranks 18th nationally entering this week. Five different Red Raiders have posted double-doubles so far this season, led by Emily Ruetter s eight which is one more than her total from a year ago. Tech has already totaled 16 double-doubles this year, two more from its total from the entire 2012 season. ALLEN BECOMES TEXAS TECH S OFFENSIVE LEADER IN BIG 12 PLAY Since returning from a preseason injury on Sept. 25 at Oklahoma, Jenna Allen has shown why Don Flora was excited for the South Carolina transfer to debut in scarlet and black. In her six matches so far this season, Allen has totaled 97 kills, averaging a team-best 3.59 per set during that span. She has led the Red Raiders in kills for five of eight matches, including a career-high 24 in Texas Tech s 3-2 victory at TCU. The Lewisville, Texas product began her Tech career by connecting on 21 kills against the Sooners, which marked the most for a Red Raider in a Big 12 opener since Kelly Johnson also totaled 21 kills in 2001 against Colorado. Her impressive debut has also focused on the defensive end as well with three double-double performances thanks in part to 63 digs at a 2.33 per set rate. She enters this weekend ranked fourth in the Big 12 in kills per set for Big 12 matches only and seventh for points per set. TEXAS TECH S JENNA ALLEN STATS FROM THE 2013 SEASON - Recorded a career-high 24 kills at TCU, the most for a Red Raider this season. - Marked the most kills for a Red Raider against a Big 12 foe since Amanda Dowdy totaled 34 at Colorado on Nov. 20, Also marked the most kills for a Big 12 player this season in a conference match. - Was the second time through six matches with at least 20 kills as she posted 21 in season debut on Sept. 25 at Oklahoma. - Her 21 kills at Oklahoma marked the most for a Red Raider in a Big 12 opener since Kelly Johnson also had 21 in Recorded three double-doubles so far, which is tied for the second-most among Texas Tech players this season. DAVID STARTS OFF JUNIOR YEAR IN STYLE For Breeann David, the 2013 season probably couldn t have gotten off to a better start. The hard-hitting junior has totaled 204 kills in 18 matches this season where she has averaged 3.46 per set, the fifth-highest total currently in the Big 12. The Denver City, Texas native started off the year by posting 10 or more kills in each of the first six matches of the season, the longest streak to start a season since Kelly Johnson did so in the first seven matches of the 2004 season. David, who has missed five matches due to injury and has been limited for the majority of Big 12 play, is also third in the Big 12 for points per set (4.19) and sixth for aces per set with 0.29 per frame. The lone senior on the Texas Tech roster, Piper, who has battled several injuries throughout her career, is Tech s second-leading offensive player so far this year, totaling 226 kills at a 2.72 per set rate. With nine matches still remaining in the season, Piper has already surpassed her career high in kills as she topped the 156 from her 2012 junior year just a few weeks ago. Her presence in the middle has not just been felt offensively, though, as she has also recorded 5 blocks while adding 14 service aces. The Amarillo, Texas native has posted a team-high.277 hitting percentage that ranks just outside the top 10 in the Big 12 entering this week. She is currently on pace to enter the Tech career record book at the end of the season with a.253 hitting percentage over four seasons. O CANADA - SEASON TWO For as much balance as Texas Tech has shown this year offensively, much of the credit belongs to Emily Ruetter. Tech s first Canadian volleyball athlete since 2007 heads into this weekend ranked fourth in the Big 12 and 72nd nationally with a assists per set average that is a full assist more than her average from her 2012 freshman season. Ruetter has totaled 842 assists through 23 of 32 regular season matches, putting her on pace to potentially become just the fifth Red Raider setter to record more than 1,200 assists. No Tech setter has reached the mark since Laura Grote in 2003 when she dished out 1,276 assists. Ruetter, who has also recorded nine service aces and 23 blocks, is Tech s first Canadian-born player since current director of volleyball operations Amy Gandy ( ). WRAPPING UP THE TCU VICTORY Marked Texas Tech s first Big 12 Conference win of the season. Marked Texas Tech s first Big 12 road win since defeating West Virginia, 3-1, on Oct. 13 last year in Morgantown. Marked Texas Tech s first five-set conference road victory since topping Colorado on Nov. 20, 2010, in Boulder. Marked the earliest Big 12 win for Tech since 2010 when the Red Raiders edged Kansas, 3-2, in their fifth league match. Evened the all-time series with TCU at 4-4 entering the Nov. 30 season finale between the two schools in Lubbock. Tech s.217 attacking percentage was its highest in a Big 12 match since also hitting.217 on Nov. 14 last year at Texas. Tech s 89 digs marked a season high and the fourth-most by a Big 12 team so far this season. Tech s 89 digs were its most against a Big 12 foe since totaling 97 in a 3-2 victory over Baylor on Oct. 26, Tech had five different players in double figures for digs, led by Rachel Brummitt with a match-high 26 from back row. Emily Ruetter and Jenna Allen posted double-doubles, their seventh and third ones already this season. Defeated the Horned Frogs despite Texas Tech s leading attacker, Breeann David, being limited in the match. WRIGHT STEPS UP IN TRIP TO INCARNATE WORD, TEXAS STATE Faced with a depleted bench, Texas Tech head coach Don Flora turned to sophomore Emily Wright to fill a void on the outside as the usual defensive specialist turned into a six-rotation player in both matches against Incarnate Word and Texas State. The effort did not go unnoticed, either, as Wright recorded her first career double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs Monday against the Cardinals before coming back the next night to post a career-high 14 digs against Texas State. The Cypress, Texas native returned to being a full-time defensive specialist last week at Oklahoma. FLORA PICKS UP CAREER WIN NO. 300 ON OPENING WEEKEND Texas Tech head coach Don Flora earned his 300th career victory at the collegiate level during opening weekend when the Red Raiders dropped Grand Canyon in four sets at the Wildcat invitational. The Red Raiders are now 8-12 on the year, improving Flora s overall record to in 13-plus seasons at both the University of La Verne in California as well as Texas Tech. Flora, arguably one of the winningest active coaches at the Division-I level, led Tech to 29 victories over his first two seasons after inheriting a program that totaled just 30 wins in the five seasons prior to his arrival. The California native currently ranks tied for fifth among Big 12 Conference coaches in career victories, trailing only Ray Bechard (Kansas), Jerritt Elliott (Texas) and Jim Barnes (Baylor) and Santiago Restrepo (Oklahoma). All four coaches have longer career tenures than Flora, who arrived in Lubbock after two seasons as an assistant at New Mexico State and 11 years as the head coach of his alma mater in La Verne where he amassed a record (.820 winning percentage) and led the Leopards to the 2001 NCAA Division III National Championship. The Red Raiders, who were already scheduled to face Iowa State (Oct. 30) on ESPNU as part of the Big 12 television schedule, will also face Kansas (Oct. 16), Kansas State (Nov. 6) and Oklahoma (Nov. 20) in FOX broadcasts that are part of Texas Tech s third-tier rights agreement with the network TEXAS TECH VOLLEYBALL TELEVISION SCHEDULE Date Opponent TV Oct. 2 Iowa State FOX Sports Southwest Oct. 16 Kansas FOX Sports Southwest-Plus Oct. 30 at Iowa State ESPNU Nov. 6 Kansas State FOX Sports Southwest Nov. 20 Oklahoma FOX College Sports MILLS, BRUMMITT NAMED TO WILDCAT INVITATIONAL ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM Rachel Brummitt and Mikia Mills also earned a selection to the Wildcat Invitational all-tournament team after the two juniors helped lead the Red Raiders to a 3-1 showing in the event. Brummitt totaled a team-high 75 digs from the back row, averaging 5.36 per set which ranks third in the Big 12 after one weekend. She ended the tournament with a match-high 26 digs against host Weber State, marking the ninth time in her Tech career where she has reached the 20-dig mark. Mills, meanwhile, connected on 39 kills, second-most on the team, while adding nine digs and 11 blocks to collect her first alltournament honor of her career. The middle blocker delivered 25 kills over the final two matches, including a career-high 13 in Tech s four-set victory over Grand Canyon. Teammate Breeann David shared Most Valuable Player honors as well. 4

5 ENSCH MAKES IMPRESSIVE DEBUT IN UTAH Texas Tech freshman Courtney Ensch made what seemed to be a smooth transition to collegiate volleyball at the Wildcat Invitational as she connected on 26 kills from the right side while also adding eight digs and five blocks. Ensch, who arrived at Tech from Southlake Carroll High School, had one of the most accurate performances for a Red Raider in recent memory against Grand Canyon as she recorded 12 kills off just 19 attempts. Ensch had only two hitting errors in the match for a.526 hitting percentage, which was the highest for a Red Raider since Lydia McKay totaled the same average on Sept. 14 last year against Houston Baptist. Ensch closed the weekend hitting.327 over 13 sets, the second-highest percentage on the team. PIPER RETURNS AS TEXAS TECH S LONE SENIOR When Aubree Piper looks walks across the court later this season on Senior Night, she will be the only player on Tech s 19-person roster to receive flowers and framed jersey. The four-year senior, who has started in 52 matches the past three seasons, will be Tech s leader both on the court and in the locker room for a program that despite returning 12 letterwinners also boasts seven newcomers. Piper enters her senior season with 440 career kills to go along with 174 total blocks and a.242 career hitting percentage. She ended 2012 with a.312 hitting percentage, which ranked ninth in school history for a single season. The Amarillo, Texas native is Tech s most experienced returner, having played in 72 career matches despite battling various injuries throughout her career. WHAT CAN BRUMMITT DO NEXT FOR TECH? After a record-breaking inaugural season in scarlet and black, the best question pertaining to Rachel Brummitt might just be what can she do next? The junior libero shattered the Tech single-season record in 2012 with 510 digs from the back row, finishing with 62 more than previous record holder Melissa McGehee (2000). The Plano, Texas native wrapped the 2012 season ranked fourth in the Big 12 for digs per set (4.32), trailing only Kristin Hahn (Iowa State), Brianne Riley (Kansas) and Maria Fernanda (Oklahoma). A similar, if not better, performance this year would already place Brummitt near the top 10 on the Tech career chart as well as Ginger Carter currently sits in 10th place with 1,092 digs from the seasons. Lisa Hilgers owns the Tech career record for digs after totaling 1,583 from that also ranks ninth in Big 12 history entering the 2013 season as well. THE DENVER CITY HAMMER Not shy from coining nicknames, Texas Tech head coach Don Flora has long referred to junior outside hitter Breeann David as the Denver City Hammer. Named for both her hometown of nearby Denver City, Texas, as well as her hard-hitting ability, David enters her junior season as one of Tech s key offensive weapons after she led the team with a 2.77 kills per set average a year ago. David, a six-rotation players normally, totaled 213 digs in 2012 despite missing six matches due to an ankle injury that sidelined her early into Big 12 play. David, who comes from a family of Texas Tech athletes, has also posted 239 digs and 135 blocks over her first two seasons in scarlet and black. Her father, Stan David, was a standout football player for the Red Raiders and eventual 1984 NFL Draft selection by the Buffalo Bills. Her mother, Megan David (formerly McGuire), also starred on the volleyball team while at Tech where she still ranks in the top 10 in most career blocking categories. Her younger brother, Clancy David, is also a walk-on football team currently at Tech. ALLEN EXPECTED TO BOOST RED RAIDER ATTACK ON OUTSIDE Like David, Texas Tech is also expecting sophomore transfer Jenna Allen to become an immediate presence on the outside as the newcomer joined the program last spring after spending the 2012 season at South Carolina. Allen appeared in 30 matches while making nine starts for the Gamecocks where she finished fourth on the team with 122 kills while also adding a 102 digs from the back row. Allen is one of two transfers for the Red Raiders from the Southeastern Conference (SEC), joining Lauren Douglass who arrived this fall from Ole Miss. HINNEBURG NAMED BIG 12 PRESEASON CO-FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR Texas Tech freshman Victoria Hinneburg was named the Big 12 Preseason Co-Freshman of the Year prior to the season, marking the first time a Red Raider has ever garnered the award. Hinneburg, a native of Leipzig, Germany, is just the third Red Raider to earn a conference preseason award, joining Colleen Smith (1999) and Justine Young (2010) who were both named the league s Newcomer of the Year. One of the top international prospects in the 2013 class, Hinneburg will give Tech plenty of size and ability for the years to come as she is the tallest Red Raider listed on the roster at 6-4. Hinneburg shared the award with Kansas State s Katie Brand. RED RAIDERS WELCOME SEVEN NEWCOMERS TO THE ROSTER Texas Tech welcomes seven newcomers to its roster this fall with three being transfer players in Jenna Allen, Carlie Foust and Lauren Douglass. The Red Raiders also added four freshmen in Katie Daffer, Courtney Ensch, Marguerite Grubb and Victoria Hinneburg. Tech opens its home slate next Tuesday (Sept. 3) against Abilene Christian and then travels roughly 120 miles south to face the Wildcats again on Sept. 10 in Abilene. The Red Raiders have never played two non-conference opponents twice in a season during the Big 12 era. Tech played both SMU and Grambling State twice during the 1996 and 2011 seasons, going 4-0 in those matches. RED RAIDERS TO MAKE FIRST-EVER APPEARANCE ON ESPN The Texas Tech volleyball program will face Iowa State in front of a national television audience on Oct. 30 as the Red Raiders and Cyclones were picked prior to the season to appear on ESPNU as part of the Big 12 Conference s television schedule for the 2013 season. The match is part of a Big 12 double-header on the network as Baylor and Kansas will face off at 6 p.m. CT in Lawrence before the Red Raiders and Cyclones open with an 8 p.m. first serve later in the evening at Hilton Coliseum in Ames. This will be Tech s first ever appearance on an ESPN network (ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU). The Red Raiders are all-time against the Cyclones and 10-8 when playing in Ames.
