IN THE RANKINGS: Following two more wins to extend its winning streak to nine matches, the Georgia men s tennis team (12-5, 7-0) jumped three spots to No. 7 in last week s Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) weekly poll. Then, after a tough loss to No. 12 Texas A&M on the road on March 28, the Bulldogs fell one spot to No. 8 this week in the poll released on April 1. In singles, Austin Smith continues to lead the way for the Bulldogs coming in at No. 18 and on a nine-match winning streak with a team-high 29 wins. DIAZ APPROACHING ANOTHER MILESTONE: Georgia head coach Manuel Diaz - now in his 26th season at the helm - is nearing yet another career milestone. Having entered the season with 585 victories to his name, he now stands with 597 and is just three shy of the 600-win plateau. Diaz has the ninth-most wins in NCAA Division I men s tennis history, and is second all-time on that list among SEC coaches behind only Bulldog legend Dan Magill, who won 706 matches in 33 seasons from Only eight NCAA Division I men s head coaches in history have won 600 matches in a career. Diaz won his 500th match on March 15, 2010 against Vanderbilt, then snagged No. 550 in a 2012 dual match also against the Commodores. RECAPPING THE FALL: Georgia players won three singles titles and reached the final of another fall tournament to start the season. Sophomore Austin Smith led the Bulldogs with 15 wins, including seven against ranked opponents. He reached the quarterfinals of the All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla., and also made the final of the SEC Fall Classic in Nashville. Nathan Pasha notched 13 wins, including titles at the ITA Southeast Regional Championships at Georgia Tech and the Southern Intercollegiate Championships in Athens. Pasha and Smith represented UGA in the singles draw of the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships in New York, while senior Garrett Brasseaux was named champion of the Bulldog Scramble in November. In doubles, the team of Hernus Pieters and Ben Wagland led the team with six wins. BULLDOGS PICKED TO WIN SEC AGAIN: The No. 3 Georgia men s tennis team was tabbed to win the Southeastern Conference title in a vote of the league s 13 head coaches released Jan. 16 by the SEC office. Georgia swept the 2013 regular-season and tournament titles before advancing to the NCAA semifinals with a 26-5 (11-1) record. The Bulldogs return the top five singles players from that squad. The preseason coaches poll is compiled using a tally. Each vote counts as one point. Georgia ended with 155 total points, followed by Tennessee (137), Texas A&M (132), Kentucky (108), and Florida (105) to round out the top five. Georgia leads the SEC in overall conference titles (36) and regular-season crowns (27). (L-R): Nick Wood, Hernus Pieters, Austin Smith, Nathan Pasha, Paul Oosterbaan, Ben Wagland, Eric Diaz, Garrett Brasseaux. COLLEGE MATCHDAY TO VISIT ATHENS THIS SPRING: College MatchDay, a nationwide series spotlighting college tennis, will visit the University of Georgia this spring, according to an announcement on Jan. 29 by the USTA. The weekly series will feature 22 matches on 18 campuses, including 10 matches live on ESPN3. The series will come to Athens for
3 the Georgia women s match against Missouri on March 30 and the UGA men s match against Arkansas on April 4. The Missouri match will also be shown on ESPN3, and a fan experience trailer will be on site. In addition, College MatchDay will be on site for the Georgia-Texas A&M men s match in College Station on March 28, and the match will air on ESPN3. The fan experience trailer is a 53-foot, interactive trailer where fans can engage in a number of activities before and during the match. Each MatchDay that will be live streamed will follow a unique, experimental format, as proposed by an advisory group of NCAA Division I athletic directors. Six singles matches will be played first, and once a team reaches four points and clinches the match, the remaining matches will not be completed. In the case of a 3-3 tie after the singles matches, three doubles matches - played using 10-point super tiebreakers - will be used to determine the winner. The team that wins two of the three doubles matches wins the team match. All MatchDay dual matches will count toward a team s win-loss record both overall and, if applicable, in conference. For MatchDays that will not be live streamed, the teams will not be held to the same experimental format. OOSTERBAAN JOINS BULLDOGS IN JANUARY: Michigan native Paul Oosterbaan joined the Georgia team as an early enrollee, arriving in Athens in January in time for the spring 2014 season. Oosterbaan, who stands at 6-foot-8, earned a wild card into the main draw at the 2013 U.S. Open by winning the boys 18s doubles title at the USTA National Championship earlier this year in Kalamazoo. His other wins include the Clay Court doubles, boys 16s Winter Nationals singles, Lexington grade 4 ITF singles and the USTA 18s National Open. He has been ranked as high as No. 8 by tennisrecruiting.net and was ranked No. 2 in the country in boys 16s.
