Defending champion San Diego State was a near unanimous pick to win the conference after garnering 34 of 35 first-place votes and 383 points. Boise State followed with one first-place vote and 275 points, picked just ahead of New Mexico and UNLV with 270 and 269 points, respectively. Colorado State, Wyoming and Fresno State made up the middle of the group after being picked fifth, sixth and seventh with 258, 256 and 232 points, respectively. Nevada (126) and Air Force (102) were picked ahead of the Aggies (98) in eighth and ninth and San José State rounded out the poll in 11th with 41 points. 3 LOOKING AT UTAH STATE Utah State captured its first victory in the Pit since the 1979 season with a win at New Mexico on Saturday. The Aggies are currently on the year and 6-5 in Mountain West play. USU has been led offensively by sophomore wing Jalen Moore with 15.4 points per game (No. 6 in the MW) and a team-best 7.0 rebounds per game (No. 6 in the MW). He is followed by redshirt freshman forward David Collette with 13.0 (No. 8 in the MW) points per game, shooting 57.6 percent (125-of-217) from the court which is currently No. 3 in the Mountain West. Moore and Collette make up one of just two pair of teammates in the conference that each rank in the top-10 of the league in scoring. Junior guard Chris Smith rounds out Utah State s double digit scorers, averaging 11.4 per game. Smith also leads USU with a 45.3 percent (43-of-95) clip from behind the 3-point line, No. 5 in the MW. As a team, Utah State is shooting 43.6 percent (517-of-1,185) from the field, 38.5 percent (164- of-426) from behind the 3-point line and 64.9 percent (285-of-439) from the free throw line while averaging 64.5 points per game. LAST TIME OUT ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Utah State led for the entire second half and captured a victory at New Mexico on Saturday afternoon, posting its first win in the Pit since the 1979 season. The result puts the Aggies at on the year and 6-5 in the Mountain West and gives the Lobos an overall mark of 14-9 and a league mark of 6-5. New Mexico had the largest lead of the first half after using a 7-0 run over the span of a minuteand-a-half to take a 15-6 advantage with 13:02 on the clock. Utah State battled back late in the half to tie the contest at with 4:56 to play, but back-to-back baskets put the Aggies back down four, 26-22, with just under four minutes. USU recorded back-to-back baskets of its own over the final two possessions as junior guard Chris Smith hit a pair of 3-pointers, including a buzzer beater to give the Aggies a lead going into the break. Utah State s lead grew to six after halftime as sophomore wing Jalen Moore converted a 3-point play, putting the Aggies up The Lobos only got to within two as the second half wore on, and Utah State took its largest lead of 10, 56-46, on a jumper by junior guard Darius Perkins with 7:51 to play. UNM came back to within three, 63-60, with 1:56 to play, but neither team was able to score down the stretch, leading to the final score. Moore led all scorers with 19 points and added a career high three blocks. He was followed by Smith with 13 points and a career-high two steals, and Perkins and redshirt freshman forward David Collette with 10 points apiece. Collette recorded his second double-double of the year after leading the team with 12 rebounds and adding four blocks to move to No. 3 all-time in a single season with 48 on the year. New Mexico was led by Obij Aget with 10 points and 11 rebounds as the Lobos finished the game shooting 43.4 percent (23-of-53) from the floor, 20.0 percent (3-of-15) from behind the 3-point line and 64.7 percent (11-of-17) from the free throw line. Utah State wrapped up its night shooting 47.2 percent (25-of-53) from the floor, 30.4 percent (7- of-23) from long range and 60.0 percent (6-of-10) from the charity stripe. UTAH STATE AT NEW MEXICO NOTABLES Utah State leads the all-time series 20-7, including a 6-2 record on the road. The victory is the first at Albuquerque for Utah State since the 1979 season. Utah State only committed nine turnovers, marking the 10th time this season that the Aggies have recorded single-digit turnovers in a game. Utah State recorded seven blocks, marking the 12th time this season that the Aggies have turned away five or more shots in a game. Utah State at New Mexico Player Notes Redshirt freshman forward David Collette recorded four blocks in the game, moving him to No. 4 all-time in a single season in school history with 48 on the year. Collette recorded his second career double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds. His 10 points mark the 15th time this season and in his career he has scored in double figures. The win moves USU to 11-7 on the year and 4-2 in the Mountain West while the Wolf Pack drop to 6-11 overall and 2-3 in league play. The two teams battled through three deadlocks over the opening 10 minutes, culminating in a tie with 10:21 on the clock. The Aggies then created a bit of space with a five-point run to take a lead, holding the Wolf Pack scoreless over a five-minute stretch. 5 Nevada came out in the second half with a five-point run of its own, coming to within within the first minute of the final stanza. A jumper by Smith ended the run and kick started an 11-2 run, capped by one of four 3-point buckets by Jalen Moore, to open a 16-point lead, 42-26, with 15:11 to play. The Wolf Pack whittled the margin down to single digits, coming to within five points, 50-45, with 8:45 to play, but back-to-back baskets by junior guard Darius Perkins and Smith put the Aggies back up 10, Utah State maintained the double-digit lead down the stretch in posting the victory. Moore led all scorers with a career-high 22 points, marking his 16th consecutive game in double figures and matching the longest streak by a sophomore since USU All-American Jaycee Carroll rattled off 16 straight during his sophomore season. He was followed by Smith and redshirt freshman David Collette with 10 points apiece with Collette also pacing the Aggies on the glass with seven rebounds. Nevada was led by junior forward AJ West with a career-high 18 points, a game-high nine rebounds and three blocks. As a team, the Wolf Pack only shot 35.0 percent (21-of-60) from the floor, including 11.1 percent (2-of-18) from behind the 3-point line, the second lowest total from long range this season by the USU defense. Utah State shot 45.8 percent (27-of-59) from the floor, 46.7 percent (7-of-15) from deep and 69.2 percent (9-of-13) from the free throw line in the victory. The Aggies have shot over 45 percent from behind the 3-point line in each of their Mountain West games this year. LAST TIME AGAINST NEVADA IN LOGAN LOGAN, Utah - Double-doubles from Spencer Butterfield and Jarred Shaw were part of four players in double-digits to lead Utah State men s basketball to an win over Nevada on Feb. 5, 2014 in Mountain West action at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum. Senior guard/forward Butterfield netted 20 points to go with 11 rebounds while senior center Shaw logged 17 points and a game-high and season-best tying 13 rebounds. Senior guard Preston Medlin tallied 14 points, all in the second half, and dished out a game-high seven assists, while sophomore forward Kyle Davis added 12 points, including a season-high 10-of-12 effort at the free throw line. Nevada was led by Deonte Burton with game-best 23 points, swiping three steals. Burton came into Wednesday s game leading the MW and ranking 16th in the NCAA in scoring at 21.0 ppg. Cole Huff tallied 21 points to go with a team-leading seven rebounds. Michael Perez added 12 points, while AJ West had four blocks to go with six points, four rebounds and two steals. USU All-American Jaycee Carroll has the longest streak in recent history, scoring in 39 consecutive games over the course of the and seasons. Moore matched Carroll s sophomore streak of 16 consecutive games with a career-high 22 points at Nevada. HALFTIME TURN AROUND Utah State opened the year 0-4 when leading at the half, but have since gone 9-0 in games when leading at the break. Collette broke the freshman single-game scoring mark with 32 points against USC on Dec. 7 which is the most points in a single game by any player in the Mountain West this season. The previous record was held by former Aggie All-American Jaycee Carroll who scored 28 points against UC Santa Barbara, Jan. 6, NO OVERTIME Utah State is 0-3 this season in games that have been decided in overtime. The Aggies are all-time in overtime contests. BETTER TO BURY THE OPPOSITION Utah State is 7-2 this season in games that have been decided by 10 or more points. DOUBLE DOWN, NO PROBLEMS Utah State has faced 10 double-digit deficits this season, but have been able to come back and take the lead or tie in eight of the nine games. He is also the school s all-time winningest coach as he passed the legendary E. Lowell Romney s 225 career wins on Jan. 17, 2008 with an win against Boise State. In 16 years at Utah State, Morrill has taken the Aggie Basketball program to unprecedented heights leading USU to an incredible (.729) record, including a (.726) mark in three different conference, the Big West ( ), Western Athletic ( ) and Mountain West (2014-pres.). While at Utah State, he has guided the Aggies to a 21-win season a total of 14 times, as USU s 13 straight postseason appearances (NCAA-8, NIT-4, CIT-1), was snapped in , but both of which are school records. Prior to Morrill s run, USU had never posted more than three-straight 20-win seasons and participated in more than three-straight postseason tournaments. Morrill has also led Utah State to the sixth-best winning percentage in the nation during the last 14 years at 73.9 percent with an overall record of Against conference opponents, Utah State has a record with seven regular season league championships and six tournament titles during that time, including appearances in its league s tournament championship game 10 times in the last 15 years. Under Morrill, Utah State has notched 12 of the top 13 seasons in school history as the Aggies set a school record with 28 wins during the 2000 season, tied that record with 28 wins during the 2001 season, set a school record with 30 wins in 2009 and tied that record with 30 wins in The edition of Utah State men s basketball was in its first season in the Mountain West, posting an overall and 7-11 MW mark, finishing eighth in the league. USU won its first-ever MW Championships game with a come-from-behind win over Colorado State, before falling to top-seed and eighth-ranked San Diego State in the quarterfinals. Individually, senior guard/forward Spencer Butterfield and fellow senior, center Jarred Shaw became USU s first MW honorees, as the Aggie duo collected honorable mention all-mw accolades. USU was 13-5 at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum in , marking the Aggies 11th-straight season with 13 or more home wins and its 21st-straight season with double-digit home wins. Utah State s streak of consecutive seasons with at least one player earning first-team all-league accolades halted in 2013, but two Aggies collected second-team all-wac honors in Butterfield and Shaw. Both were also tabbed to the WAC s all-newcomer team. During the season, Utah State made its 30th postseason appearance all-time as it advanced to the championship game of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament winning four postseason games in the process, which is a single-season school record. Guard Preston Medlin was named first-team all-wac in , becoming just the second sophomore in school history to earn first-team all-conference honors along with Nate Harris (2004). Utah State had two other players honored by the WAC in 2012 as senior guard Brockeith Pane was named to the league s honorable mention team, while junior forward Kyisean Reed was voted to the WAC s all-newcomer team. Medlin and Pane were also named to the CollegeInsider.com all-tournament team in 2012 along with senior forward Morgan Grim. Overall, Morrill has coached 15 first-team allleague players at Utah State who have won the award a total of 21 times. Morril has also coached three WAC Players of the Year in Tai Wesley (2011), Gary Wilkinson (2009) and Jaycee Carroll (2008), and all three of those players went on to earn Associated Press honorable mention All-America honors - Wesley (2011); Wilkinson (2009); Carroll (2007, 2008). During the season, Morrill guided Utah State to its fourth-straight regular season WAC Championship, including its third-straight outright title with a 15-1 record. USU also won its second WAC Tournament title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the 20th time in school history, including eight times under Morrill s watch. Furthermore, the Aggie basketball team was nationally ranked for the last nine weeks of the season and finished the year ranked No. 25 in the country in final ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll, marking the first time since the 1978 season and only the eighth time in school history that an Aggie team was nationally ranked at the end of the year. Morrill was also honored during the season and was named the WAC Coach of the Year for the third time in as many years. He was also named the 2011 Jim Phelan National Coach of the Year by CollegeInsider.com and the National Association of Basketball Coaches District 6 Co-Coach of the Year for the second-straight season. All-time, Morrill has been named Coach of the Year five times in his 15 years at USU (2000 BWC, 2002 BWC, 2009 WAC, 2010 WAC, 2011 WAC), along with winning the Big Sky award while the head coach at Montana in Morrill has taken full advantage of the home court at USU, the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum. In Morrill s 16 years, USU is an amazing (.898) at home, which includes a (.866) record in league play. As for Morrill, he has won 20 or more games on 18 different occasions during his career and has won at least 18 games a total of 25 times. With an overall record of (.682), Morrill became the 14th active Division I head coach and the 41st all-time Division I head coach with 600 wins, after the Aggies win at San José State on March 1, Morrill s career winning percentage of 68.2 percent ranks 19th among active coaches and 80th all-time. He is also one of 22 active coaches with 500 career wins at the Division I level and one of just nine active coaches to notch at least win seasons. His streak of 14 straight 20-win seasons ranks tied for fifth among active coaches. Academics and community service have been of top priority to Morrill and his staff as all of the team members are involved with USU s CHAMPS/Life Skills Program within the community. In his 16 years, Morrill has graduated better than 80 percent of his players, and over the past 12 years, Utah State has had 36 academic all-conference honorees. Morrill, who was born in Provo, Utah and attended Provo High School, owns a career record of in 28 years of collegiate coaching, including a record at Utah State in 16 years, a record in seven years at Colorado State ( ) and a mark in five campaigns at Montana ( ). There are several reasons that I was attracted to Utah State, Morrill said when he was hired. The first was being a Utah native so that it is a homecoming of sorts for me. My brother and sister both live within an hour and a half of Logan. I am very familiar with the tradition of Utah State basketball and can name the greats as well as any alumni could, Morrill added. It is a good basketball situation and my family will love the quality of the community of Logan. It is a great place to live and that is very important to me and my family. It just made sense to us. The 62-year old ranks second on the CSU victory list and second in winning percentage. He guided the Rams to back-to-back 20-win seasons the last two years in Fort Collins, with identical 20-9 marks. During the season, CSU made its second trip to the NIT in the last three years. Morrill guided CSU to two of its eight all-time 20-win seasons and won at least 17 games five times in his seven years. In fact, Morrill-led CSU teams own three of the top nine winning seasons in school history. During his tenure at Colorado State, he coached three first-team all-wac selections, one second-team pick and six honorable mention choices. Three of his players were named to the WAC all-tournament team. His coaching career began as an assistant at Gonzaga from and then to Montana where he was an assistant from working for Mike Montgomery, who spent 17 years as the head coach at Stanford and is now the head coach at California. Montgomery worked under Jim Brandenburg and Jud Heathcote, who retired after a successful career, which included a national championship at Michigan State.
