Allen started the final five games of the season, while Pope earned starts in the final 12 outings. n The Aztecs also return three additional letterwinners in senior guard and returning starter Matt Shrigley, senior guard D Erryl Williams, and sophomore guard Ben Perez. Additionally, senior forward Niksha Federico is back for his fourth season as a walk-on. n SDSU will unveil five new additions in sophomore guard Montaque Gill-Caesar (Missouri transfer), sophomore forward Max Hoetzel (Indiana transfer), senior center Valentine Izundu (Washington State transfer), redshirt freshman forward Nolan Narain (four-star recruit), and true freshman forward Jalen McDaniels (four-star signee). n SDSU s returning leaders: Scoring - Trey Kell (12.6), Rebounding - Zylan Cheatham (5.4), Assists - Jeremy Hemsley (1.8), Blocked Shots - Valentine Izundu (2.2), Steals - Dakarai Allen (1.1), Three-Point Field Goals - Trey Kell (1.9), Minutes Played - Trey Kell (28.5). n The Aztecs won their third outright MW regular-season championship by three games last year, which tied the largest margin in the 17-year history of the league. It was their conference-leading 10th Mountain West title. n San Diego State enters the new year having won at least 20 games and advanced to the postseason 11 straight years (seven NCAAs, four NITs). In those 11 seasons, the Aztecs have averaged 26 victories. n The Aztecs have won at least one postseason tournament game in an NCAA-sponsored event (NCAA or NIT) four years in a row (2013 NCAA third round, 2014 NCAA Sweet 16, 2015 NCAA third round, 2016 NIT semifinals), which is tied for the fifth-longest active streak in America (complete list below). n SDSU has reached the postseason and appeared in 11 straight NCAA-sponsored tournaments (NCAA or NIT), which is tied for the eighth-longest active streak nationally (complete list below). n SDSU has won at least 27 games the last three years and has averaged nearly 29 wins during that span (28.7). n San Diego State has won at least 23 games in eight straight seasons (27.5 wins per year). n SDSU is one of six schools to win at least 23 games every season from to (Brigham Young, Duke, Gonzaga, Kansas, VCU). n The Aztecs have won Mountain West regular-season crown (outright or shared) five times in the last six years. n San Diego State has been one of the elite programs in the nation since the start of the season, posting a cumulative record of SDSU s.797 winning percentage is the seventh-best nationally over the last six years (complete list below). n The Aztecs will feature a roster that will have a total of 603 games under their collective belt, which is more than both of the program s NCAA Sweet 16 squads. The group entered the year with 523 career games played, while the team boasted 450 career Division I outings at the start of that campaign. n San Diego State is set to return 72.6 percent of its scoring, 61.2 percent of its rebounding, 62.7 percent of its assists, 48.8 percent of its blocked shots, 69.8 percent of its steals, and 95.5 percent of its three-point field goals. n The Aztecs are returning eight letterwinners off a team that finished first in the nation in field-goal percentage defense (.373), third in scoring defense (60.6), fifth in total blocked shots (207), sixth in total rebounds (1,475), seventh in three-point field-goal percentage WINNING IN THE POSTSEASON Below is a list of longest active seasons with at least one victory in an NCAA-sponsored event (NCAA or NIT) entering School No. School No. North Carolina 14 San Diego State 4 Kansas 10 Virginia 4 Gonzaga 8 Wichita State 4 Oregon 5 BEST RECORD SINCE Below is a list of the highest winning percentages in the country since the beginning of the campaign. Head Coach/Head Coach in Waiting: Brian Dutcher (Minnesota, 1982), 18th Season Assistant Coaches: Justin Hutson (CSU Bakersfield, 1994), Ninth Season David Velasquez (San Diego State, 2007), 15th Season Assistant to the Head Coach: Mark Fisher (Michigan, 2001), 15th Season Director of Operations: Matt Soria (San Diego State, 2002), 17th Season Director of Player Development: Tim Shelton (San Diego State, 2011), 10th Season defense (.300) and 10th in blocked shots per game (5.4). n SDSU was fourth nationally in defensive adjusted efficiency (90.3), according to KenPom. In other defensive metrics, the Aztecs were first in effective field-goal percentage (.425), second in three-point percentage (.294), fourth in block percentage (.150) and fifth in two-point percentage (.416). n Since , SDSU is (.778) against Mountain West competition (regular season and tournament), which is tops in the league. New Mexico ranks second with a record of (.646) and UNLV is third at (.558). PLAYER PERSONNEL n San Diego State loses a pair of starting rotation staples in seniors Winston Shepard and Skylar Spencer, and another senior veteran with starting experience in Angelo Chol, but as always, the transition should be seamless. Junior guard Trey Kell, freshman guard Jeremy Hemsley and sophomore foward Zylan Cheatham are back as returning starters, as are junior forward Malik Pope and senior guard Dakarai Allen, both of who saw significant time in the starting lineup a year ago. Guards Matt Shrigley (senior), who was a returning starter entering , D Erryl Williams (senior) and Ben Perez (sophomore) are also back looking to guide SDSU to another championship season in the Mountain West and a return to the NCAA tournament. n Joining last year s returners are five talented players who will put on an Aztec uniform for the first time. A pair of sophomores in guard Montaque Gill-Caesar and forward Max Hoetzel will be eligible after sitting out following their transfers Missouri and Indiana, respectively. Redshirt freshman forward Nolan Narain graduated early from high school as a four-star recruit and sat out last season, his first on campus. Senior center Valentine Izundu, who is at San Diego State for his final season of eligibility after earning his bachelor s degree from Washington State last spring, joins the Mountain West champions as does Jalen McDaniels, a true freshman forward and four-star signee from Federal Way, Washington. n Kell is coming off a fantastic season, one in which he enjoyed career highs in every category except for one (assists; he was two shy of matching his career high). After an up-and-down non-conference effort where he scored in double figures five times in 13 games, Kell turned it on once conference hit. For the season, he averaged 12.6 points, 3.7 rebounds and 1.4 assists, but against Mountain West competition, he put up 16.2 points, 4.4 rebounds and 1.7 assists, and reached double digits in scoring all 18 games. The junior saw his shooting percentages (FG, 3FG, FT) rise last season and they figure to rise once again in This year, look for him to continue what he started mid-way through last season as one of the team s top scoring options and leaders. n Hemsley enjoyed one of the best seasons by an Aztec freshman since Kawhi Leonard in Before a foot injury suffered in February sidelined him for one game, limited his practice time down the stretch and put him in a reserve role, Hemsley was on pace to finish with a better scoring average than Leonard did in his first season on The Mesa (12.7). Hemsley started the first 25 games of the year and it could be argued he was the Aztecs best player during the non-conference portion of the season (11 double-figure scoring games out of 13). The MW Freshman of the Year finished second on the team in scoring (12.0), assists (1.8) and three-point field-goal percentage (.356), and the rising sophomore should improve in all facets of the game with a season of starting experience under his belt. n Cheatham is set to begin his third season at SDSU after a redshirt freshman campaign that saw him average 7.9 points on 52.8-percent shooting and 5.4 rebounds. The forward played in all 38 games and made 26 starts to show that he was completely healthy after a true freshman year that sidelined him due to a broken foot. A high-energy player regardless if he is starting or coming off the bench, Cheatham had two double-doubles and six double-figure rebounding efforts. With a season to his credit, the team s second-leading free-throw shooter (.716) should see his numbers across the board improve as the game begins to slow down for him. n Pope is back for his junior year after entering the 2016 NBA Draft earlier this spring and withdrawing in late May. The forward posted career highs in scoring average (7.9), rebound average (5.0), assists (29), blocked shots (29) and steals (10), but it was his play down the stretch that showed that he was one of the most explosive players in the country. In the final 13 games of the season, he put up averages of 11.7 points, 6.9 rebounds and 1.2 assists, while shooting 47.5 percent from the field, including 50.0 percent from three-point distance. In his final nine outings, however, he upped his scoring and rebounding to 12.3 and 7.3, respectively, and added three double-doubles, including a 19-point, 11-rebound effort in the MW championship game, which helped him earn all-mountain West tournament accolades. He has worked on getting bigger in the weight room and with NBA evaluations in his back pocket, look for him to put up the kind of numbers he did over the final nine games of last season and improve on being more consistent over the course of a full season. n Allen is entering his final season as one of the top defenders in the United States of America. The senior finished his junior campaign ranked first nationally out of 949 Division I players in points per possession allowed (0.591) among those with at least 200 possessions defended, according to Synergy. Allen came into his own last season not only on the defensive side, but offensively as well, despite only averaging a

3 career-high 6.4 points, which was nearly four points above his career average (2.5) entering Allen had never reached double-figures in scoring until last year and closed the season with six such games in his final nine, which gave him 12 on the year. In fact, in those final nine outings, he scored at least nine points in eight of those games. Defensively, he had a team-high 40 steals and 20 blocked shots, which is the third most among returners behind Pope and Cheatham. He looks poised to increase his scoring and continue to assert himself as one of the best defenders in the country in n Shrigley, Williams and Perez form a guard trio that saw various amount of time last season. Shrigley was sidelined with an ACL tear until Jan. 23, and played 18 of the final 19 games while averaging 11.8 minutes. Before suffering the ACL injury in late July, Shrigley was tentatively set to start in after starting 17 games as a sophomore in Look for him to be a regular in the rotation as player who does not turn the ball over, plays solid defense and stretches the defense with his outside shooting ability. Williams, like Shrigley, is a senior who is a tough, physical player that has seen action in 56 career games. When on the floor, he does not commit many turnovers, can hit an open shot, can get to the rim and is unbothered by contact. Perez, meanwhile, is a sophomore walk-on who logged significant minutes during the non-conference campaign (11 games played out of 13) and was a threat from three-point distance (.389). At season s end, Perez had played in 25 games, averaging 10.0 minutes. With a season under his belt, look for Perez to continue to be a long-distance threat and for his game to expand as the year moves along. n Izundu has the tall task of replacing the SDSU/MW all-time leader in wins and blocked shots in Skylar Spencer. A graduate transfer from Washington State, the 6-10 Izundu is eligible immediately after blocking 50 shots last year (2.2 bpg; 23 games), which would have ranked second to Spencer s 72 (1.9 bpg; 38 games). From an offensive standpoint, they both averaged 3.8 points, but Izundu did it in 14.9 minutes, while Spencer reached his average in 24.2 minutes. Spencer finished with an edge in rebounding, Izundu figures to give SDSU the same type of defensive presence Spencer provided for four seasons and should be the same, if not better, on the offensive end. n Gill-Caesar will make his debut in an SDSU uniform after an impressive true freshman campaign two seasons ago at Missouri ( ). A guard with good size (6-6), Gill-Caesar was averaging 11.5 points through the Tigers non-conference schedule before a back injury sidelined him for the first three games of the SEC schedule. When he returned, he struggled to regain his rhythm and ultimately finished with averages of 9.1 points, which was the highest freshman scoring average at Missouri since the season, and 3.0 rebounds. Look for the consensus top-50 recruit coming out of high school to be a versatile scorer for the Aztecs. n Hoetzel will also make his debut for San Diego State after spending his true freshman season at Indiana ( ). Standing at 6-9, Hoetzel saw his minutes fluctuate while in Bloomington as averaged 7.7 minutes after logging double-digit minutes 11 times in 31 outings. Known as a long-range shooter, Hoetzel, who helped Indiana to the 2015 NCAA tournament, is active on both sides of the ball and should give defenses fits with his size and shooting ability as he earns regular minutes. n Narain spent his true freshman season at SDSU getting stronger, refining his skill set and acclimating himself to the offensive and defensive schemes after graduating early from La Lumiere School in Indiana. A four-star player and top-70 recruit, according to a pair of scouting services, Narain will bring an inside-out game to the Aztecs with his ability work down low in the post and to knock down the perimeter shot. The forward from Canada is also active on defense and will give the Aztecs quality minutes when he is on the floor. n McDaniels heads south to San Diego from his home state of Washington. The 6-9 forward comes from a winning high school program, Federal Way High, and comes with four stars from three recruiting services. McDaniels is a do-it-all type of player and earned all-state first-team accolades from the Associated Press after averaging 19 points, 10 rebounds and four blocked shots en route to the state championship as a senior. 7 Brian Dutcher Associate Head Coach/Head Coach in Waiting 18th Season at SDSU Minnesota 82 Justin Hutson Assistant Coach 9th Season at SDSU CSU Bakersfield 94 David Velasquez Assistant Coach 15th Season at SDSU San Diego State 07 One of Steve Fisher s first moves as head coach at San Diego State was to hire Brian Dutcher as his top assistant. Dutcher, 56, was a regional scout for the Sacramento Kings before assuming the role of assistant head coach at SDSU. When Fisher decides to retire, Dutcher will assume head coaching duties as he was anointed head coach in waiting in August of Dutcher served as assistant coach and later associate head coach at Michigan under Fisher. He spent 10 seasons on the Wolverine staff, establishing himself as one of the nation s top assistant coaches. His first year in Ann Arbor was 1989 and resulted in a national title for Michigan as he assisted then-interim head coach Steve Fisher on the bench. Dutcher headed up UM s recruiting efforts in when the Wolverines inked Juwan Howard, Ray Jackson, Jimmy King, Jalen Rose and Chris Webber. The Fab Five is considered perhaps the best recruiting class in NCAA history. Dutcher helped lead that group to nearly 100 wins, two berths in the NCAA championship game and a regional final over a four-year period. He was also on the Michigan staff for an NIT championship and a Big Ten tournament title (1998). Dutcher s recruiting prowess, however, was demonstrated by more than just the Fab Five haul. Michigan had the nation s top-ranked recruiting class in and in , with a group that included Maurice Taylor and Jerod Ward. The accomplishment marked the first time that a university had the nation s top class in consecutive years. His efforts at SDSU have gained accolades as well. The first fullyear recruiting effort by Fisher, Dutcher and Co., resulted in a consensus top-40 group. Their second resulted in a top-25 class without counting a pair of high-profile transfers. Eleven seasons ago, Dutcher helped attract SDSU s first McDonald s All-American. In 2004, freshmen Brandon Heath and Marcus Slaughter earned starting spots and all-league recognition. Dutcher was a key figure in bringing in classes that produced three NBA draft picks the last four seasons (entering ), the No. 24 class in 2012 and a top-15 group in He also helped land Tulane transfer Josh Davis, who ended up being the MW Newcomer of the Year, and Arizona transfer Angelo Chol at the start of summer More recently, he helped with the recruitment of Jeremy Hemsley and Nolan Narain ( ), and Jalen McDaniels ( ), a trio of four-star players. Dutcher is firmly entrenched as one of the nation s top recruiters after showing that his rapport is as strong with potential student-athletes on the West Coast as it was in the vaunted Big Ten. Dutcher was born Oct. 30, 1959, in Alpena, Mich. He attended Bloomington (Minn.) Jefferson High School and went on to earn a bachelor s degree in physical education from Minnesota in While an undergraduate, he worked for his father, then-minnesota head coach Jim Dutcher. He then spent one season in the prep ranks at Apple Valley (Minn.) High School before becoming a graduate assistant at Illinois, where he earned his master s degree in physical education and athletic administration. While in Champaign, Dutcher helped Lou Henson lead the Illini to a Big Ten title, two appearances in the Sweet 16 and one regional final. Dutcher s first full-time coaching job came at South Dakota State, where he spent three seasons helping turn around the Division II program before departing in 1988 for Michigan. His final season in Ann Arbor ended with the Wolverines claiming the first-ever Big Ten Tournament championship. Justin Hutson enters his fourth season of his second stint at San Diego State after returning to Montezuma Mesa following a two-year stay at UNLV where he was the associate head coach. This year is his ninth overall at SDSU ( , 2013-present). When Hutson returned in April of 2013, he became reunited with Fisher, Brian Dutcher, Mark Fisher, David Velasquez and Matt Soria, a group with which he spent five seasons. During their tenure, the Aztecs went to the postseason five times and averaged 25.4 wins per year, which includes six postseason victories. In 2009, SDSU advanced to the NIT semifinals and in 2011, reached the NCAA Sweet 16 en route to a 34-3 record and a No. 6/11 (AP/Coaches) final ranking. At the Mountain West level, the Aztecs won the 2010 and 2011 tournament titles and the 2011 regular-season crown. Hutson was part of a staff that set numerous school records and in the last three years of his first tenure with the Aztecs, Hutson took on the role of defensive coordinator and helped SDSU lead the Mountain West in scoring defense in 2009, 2010 and Upon his return, Hutson helped the team to a 31-5 record, an MW regular-season title, an appearance in the Sweet 16 and a final national ranking of No. 13/12. In , he coached SDSU to a 27-9 mark, another conference regular-season crown and a spot in the third round of the NCAA tournament. This past season ended with a third straight MW regular-season crown, 28 wins and an NIT semifinal appearance. Defensively, the Aztecs have been one of the best in the nation, finishing in the top three in scoring defense the last three years and posting top-10 efforts in field-goal percentage defense (8th in 2014, 7th in 2015, 1st in 2016). SDSU also produced the fifth-best three-point percentage defense in 2014, the 16th-best effort in 2015 and the seventh-best in In both of his stints, Hutson has played a pivotal part in SDSU's recruiting efforts as the team s recruiting coordinator. He was instrumental in securing a pair of nationally recognized classes, including the No. 15 class leading into , which included 2011 NBA firstround draft pick Kawhi Leonard and four-year starter Chase Tapley. That class was also rated the top group among non-automatic qualifying BCS schools by a pair of recruiting sites. Hutson also recruited Jamaal Franklin, a two-time All-American and 2013 second-round NBA draft pick of the Memphis Grizzlies, and 2014 NBA draft pick Xavier Thames. The incoming class, his first of his second stint, meanwhile, was regarded as a top-15 class and the last two years have produced three four-star players. Prior to his decision to return to SDSU, Hutson helped UNLV to a pair of 25-plus-win seasons and two NCAA tournament appearances. He played a key role in helping the Rebels bring in a highly regarded recruiting class in , which included the 2013 No. 1 overall NBA draft selection, Anthony Bennett, a player he recruited. Before arriving at SDSU in July 2006, Hutson served as an assistant coach at Cal Poly. The Mustangs went in , doubling their previous season's win total. He was responsible for recruiting the 2006 Big West Freshman of the Year and landing two freshmen on the Big West allfreshmen team, along with bringing two first-team all-bwc selections and the defensive player of the year to San Luis Obispo in Prior to his stint at Cal Poly, Hutson served as the head varsity coach at Bakersfield High School where he led the Drillers to a CIF Central Section Championship and four appearances in the playoffs in four seasons. His 2004 team was ranked as high as No. 22 in the nation and fourth in California, while his 2003 squad finished the season with a 25-5 record and won the section title. Prior to entering the high school ranks, he was an assistant coach at his alma mater CSU Bakersfield for two seasons ( ). As a collegiate player, Hutson enjoyed a storied career, winning two NCAA Division II titles at CSU Bakersfield. In the 1993 championship season, the Roadrunners were undefeated with a 33-0 record and followed that up with a 27-6 record during the 1994 season. David Velasquez enters his 15th season at San Diego State and fourth as an assistant coach. Prior to his appointment as an assistant coach, he spent six seasons as the program s director of player development. Velasquez s responsibilities include recruiting, on-court coaching, skill development and academics. As an assistant, Velasquez is heavily involved in player development. In his previous role, he spent countless hours with former and current Aztecs analyzing their performance in games and in practice on video. Now, he applies those sessions on the practice floor. Velasquez also plays a huge role in the performance of Aztecs in the classroom. The Bay Area native works directly with San Diego State s academic advisors, tutors and mentors to ensure standards are met. What may go unnoticed is his relationship with players. As a former SDSU men s basketball student-athlete and recruit host, Velasquez understands all of the virtues that an Aztec basketball player possesses, which allows him to relate to the entire roster. In his first season as an assistant, Velasquez helped ink a consensus top-15 recruiting class, while helping the Aztecs enjoy one of their finest seasons ever, which culminated in 31 wins, a Mountain West regular-season title and an NCAA Sweet 16 berth. In , he coached SDSU to 27 wins, a second straight MW regular-season crown and an appearance in the third round of the NCAA tournament. Last season resulted in another 28 victories, a third straight MW regularseason crown and a berth in the NIT semifinals. Velasquez was also key in the Aztecs inking three four-star players in the last two signing periods. As San Diego State s director of player development, Velasquez assisted the basketball coaching staff with video breakdown, film exchange, travel, community service and handled many of the day-today office duties. Prior to his current position, Velasquez was a student manager for the season before serving as head manager from In , San Diego State earned a berth to postseason NIT, where the Aztecs picked up their first Division I postseason tournament victory en route to an appearance in the second round. Then in , San Diego State won the Mountain West with a 13-3 league record before winning the MW tournament. As a result, the Aztecs advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the second time under head coach Steve Fisher and won a then school-record 24 games. Fisher awarded Velasquez a scholarship in December 2006 and was added to the active roster in January As an official playing member of the team, Velasquez played in four games and recorded a steal. He was a member of a team that finished with a record and advanced to the second round of the postseason NIT. In Velasquez s five seasons as manager, the Aztecs went to the postseason three times and won 22 or more games twice. Following his graduation from San Diego State in May 2007, Velasquez was hired at the University of the Pacific later that month. As the Tigers' graduate manager, he assisted with UOP s camps, created highlight tapes and coordinated film exchange before returning to his alma mater. Since his return, SDSU has recorded nine more 20-win seasons, including eight with at least 23 victories, and reached the postseason in each of the last nine years. More recently, Velasquez has helped the Aztecs earn an NCAA tournament berth six of the last seven years, win the first six NCAA tournament games in program history and reach at least the third round of the Big Dance in four of the last five NCAA tournaments, including two Sweet 16 appearances.
