Matchup Notes Liberty will face No. 16/15 California in a matchup between teams looking to bounce back from Friday defeats. The Lady Flames dropped a contest to No. 11/14 Ohio State, following the Golden Bears setback to No. 10/9 Texas A&M. Liberty is looking to avoid going 0-2 at its second straight in-season tournament. The Lady Flames lost to Minnesota and then No. 1/1 South Carolina at the Subway Classic, Dec , 2014 in Minneapolis, Minn. The Lady Flames will be facing California for the first time in women s basketball. Liberty is 0-2 all-time versus Pac-12 opponents, including a loss at Washington on Dec. 19, 1998 and a setback to UCLA in East Lansing, Mich., on Nov. 16, Cal won its only previous meeting with a Big South foe, defeating Radford on Nov. 18, Liberty is 2-2 all-time versus teams from California, with wins over Long Beach State and UC Riverside and losses to Fresno State and UCLA. The Lady Flames have never played a game in the state of California though. Liberty is facing a Top 25 opponent for the second straight day. The Lady Flames have recorded four all-time Top 25 victories, with the most recent being an triumph over No. 16/16 DePaul in the second round of the 2005 NCAA Tournament (March 22, 2005). That also marked the highest-ranked team Liberty has ever defeated. The Lady Flames need a win to avoid their first four-game losing streak since starting the season at 0-4. Cal fifth-year head coach Lindsay Gottlieb spent three years ( through ) as an assistant coach at Richmond. The Spiders went 3-0 versus Liberty during her time on staff. Cal assistant Kai Felton played college basketball at Randolph-Macon Woman s College (now Randolph College), located across the town of Lynchburg from Liberty. Liberty director of operations Sarah Boruta worked on Stanford s staff for three seasons ( through ). Stanford was 6-1 versus rival Cal during that time. Liberty will look to record a win over a power conference opponent for the second straight Nov. 28. The Lady Flames defeated Penn State on Nov. 28, 2014 at the GSU Thanksgiving Tournament in Atlanta, Ga. Including the Cal game, Liberty s first six opponents this season have boasted a combined record of 12-4 at the time of the matchup. Saturday s game will mark the Lady Flames final tuneup for the start of their 20-game Big South Conference schedule. Liberty will tip off defense of its regular-season conference title Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Gardner-Webb in Boiling Springs, N.C.

2 A Look Back at Liberty s Loss to No. 11/14 Ohio State Liberty led No. 11/14 Ohio State by as much as five and held a lead after Audrey Rettstatt s three-pointer with 7:29 to play in the fourth quarter, Friday afternoon. Ohio State then held the Lady Flames to 2-of-11 from the field and forced six turnovers during a decisive 15-4 game-ending run. Liberty lost its third straight game despite shooting 49.1 percent (26-of-53) from the field, outrebounding Ohio State by 11 (42-31) and getting productive afternoons from starting post players Ashley Rininger (18 points, six rebounds) and Catherine Kearney (season-high 11 points, eight rebounds). The Lady Flames were undone by a season-high 29 turnovers, which led to 37 of the Buckeyes points. Liberty shot just 53.3 percent (8-of-15) from the free throw line and is now shooting 63.2 percent this season after making a program-record 74.5 percent from the foul line in The Lady Flames have now held 69 straight opponents below 50 percent shooting from the field, after Ohio State made 40.3 percent (25-of-62) of its field goals on Friday. Liberty matched their season high with 36 points in the paint and tallied 23 bench points. The Lady Flames reserves have outscored their opponents bench players, 67-25, during the last three games. Ten different Lady Flames scored points and 13 players got into the game.
