Southern Miss also has a (.456) mark alltime in conference play. USM has made 14 postseason appearances, including NCAA (3), NIT (10) and CBI (1). Scouting Southern Miss The Golden Eagles return just five letterwinners from last year s Conference USA Championship team. Forward Jeremiah Eason played all 36 games, starting 14. He averaged 5.6 points and is the team s leading rebounder, grabbing 4.0 boards per game last year. Guard Chip Armelin played in 35 games last year, starting five. He also pulled down 3.7 rebounds while playing in all 36 games, making eight starts. Juniors Norville Carey and Jamie Chapman also return to the squad. Southern Miss Looks to Make Up For Lost Production Southern Miss will look to make up for a lot of lost production this year. The Golden Eagles will be without their top five scorers and top three rebounders from last year. Entering the season, Southern Miss returns just 24.5% of its scoring and 32.4% of its rebounding from last year. Exhibition Games Southern Miss is 41-6 all-time in exhibition games, including having won its last 16. This will be the fourth straight season that the Eagles will play at least one exhibition game. Southern Miss last lost an exhibition game in 2003, a defeat to Global Sports All-Stars). Milestones to Watch Doc Sadler is one win away from his 150th career victory. Jeremiah Eason is five rebounds shy of 150 career. Matt Bingaya needs just 17 rebounds for 150 career. 25 x 3 With its win at Florida Atlantic on Mar. 2, Southern Miss recorded its 25th victory of the season. It was a school-record third straight year that it has won at least 25 games and just the fifth time overall. In fact, Southern Miss is one of just 11 programs to win at least 25 games each of the past three years, joining Duke, Florida, Gonzaga, Kansas, Louisville, New Mexico, Ohio State, Syracuse, VCU and Wichita State. Also, the Golden Eagles are one of just 27 teams to have won 20 games each of the past five seasons. Southern Miss One of Best in Nation When it comes to winning, Southern Miss was one of the best in the country last year. The Golden Eagles have just nine years of Division I experience on the roster, led by senior Chip Armelin with three years. However, two of those years came at Minnesota. Hayes Wait Pays Off Southern Miss redshirt sophomore Davon Hayes is entering his third season in the Golden Eagle program. However, he has yet to take the court. The Portsmouth, Va., native sat out the season due to academics. Last year, Hayes took part in summer workouts. However, during the team s summer trip to the Bahamas, Hayes injured his knee, causing him to miss the season C-USA STANDINGS C-USA Overall TEAM W-L PCT. W-L PCT. He also finished 11th in the Atlantic 10 in threepoint field goal percentage, hitting on 39.0-percent (46-of-118) from behind the arc. As a freshman, he earned Dayton s Best Defender Award. Southern Miss Regular Season Home Non-Conference Winning Streak Heading into the season, Southern Miss looks to extend its home non-conference regular season winning streak. Dating back to the season, Southern Miss has won 34 straight home non-conference regular season games. The last home non-conference regular season loss came Dec. 2, 2008 against South Alabama in overtime. Non-Conference Success Since the inception of Conference USA, Southern Miss has had the best record against non-conference opponents among current C-USA teams. In the past 19 years, the Golden Eagles are (.678) in non-conference games. In fact, Southern Miss has won 37 of its last 38 nonconference home games, with the only loss coming to BYU in the quarterfinals of the 2013 NIT. Its non-conference success is not limited to Reed Green Coliseum. With victories at DePaul, North Dakota State, South Alabama, Rhode Island and Missouri last year, Southern Miss has won 19 of its last 28 non-conference true road games since the beginning of the season. Wins vs. Losses In its 29 victories last year, Southern Miss dominated the stat sheet, especially in field goal percentage, three-point field goal percentage and rebounding. However, in its seven losses, the Golden Eagles struggled in all three categories. Below is a breakdown of Southern Miss and its opponents field goal percentage, three-point field goal percentage and rebounding in their wins and losses. Category Wins Losses FG% Opp. FG% Pt FG% Opp. 3Pt FG % Rebounding Opp. Rebounding Consecutive Games With A Three Southern Miss has connected on at least one threepointer in the last 142 games. It is the second longest three-point streak in school history. The Golden Eagles last went without a trey on March 10, 2010 against Tulane in the Conference USA Tournament. UNLV currently holds the nation s longest streak at 908 consecutive games. Southern Miss longest streak with a three-pointer is 188 games, from March 15, 1990 until January 25, UNLV (908) and Vanderbilt (896) are the only two schools to have made at least one three-pointer in every game since the NCAA adopted the three-point line prior to the season. Winning the Rebound Battle Southern Miss historically has been tough on the boards. In fact, you have to go back to the season when the Eagles lost the rebounding battle. Over the past nine seasons, the Black and Gold have owned the boards, and in six of those years, they have averaged over 36 rebounds per game. Last year, the Golden Eagles dominated the boards. Southern Miss pulled down 35.7 rebounds per game while holding the opposition to just 29.2, which led Conference USA. In fact, Southern Miss outrebounded its opponents by double-digits 11 times this year, including a seasonbest 28 against Drexel (Jan. 3) Most Familiar Foes Below is a look at Southern Miss most familiar foes in school history. The Golden Eagles will face three of their top-11 most common opponents in the season. Opponent Games Record 1. 5 For all four players, it was their first career honor. It is the first time Southern Miss has earned the honor four times in one season. In fact, it is just the second time in C-USA history that a team had four different players earn the award. November Reign Since 2005, Southern Miss has won 21 consecutive November home games. Over that span, the Black and Gold have had only two games decided by single digits and 12 of the games were decided by at least 20 points. In those games, Southern Miss won by an average of 26.1 points. In fact, the Golden Eagles have won 53 of 55 November home games all-time, with the only losses coming in 2005 to Samford and 1985 to Fairmont State. Since 2004, the Black and Gold is 33-2 when holding the opposition to 50 points or less, and have won its last 32.
