4 NYLA MILLESON Head Coach Fifth Season Kansas State, (18th season) Nyla Milleson begins her fifth season at the helm of the George Mason women s basketball program entering the season. She became the eighth head coach in program history on April 16, The Patriots have gradually improved, including a breakthrough season this winter in , tying the school record with 21 wins. They also locked up their first winning season in 14 years and first conference winning season since After winning just one A-10 contest in the Patriots inaugural season in the league - the Patriots improved to five wins in The last two seasons, Mason finished with identical 6-10 records in league action for its most conference wins since In , the Patriots advanced to the quarterfinals of the A-10 Tournament for the first time. Milleson mentored three-time Atlantic 10 All-Conference selection Taylor Brown ( ). The point guard ended her three years at Mason with 1,693 points - the second-most in program history. Former players Brown (Luxembourg) and Kristi Mokube (Australia) are currently playing professionally. Milleson spent six years as the head coach at Missouri State where she led the Lady Bears to three WNIT appearances. Under the tutelage of Milleson, the Lady Bears went (.547) and were the 2012 Missouri Valley Conference regular-season champions. In six seasons, Milleson mentored 21 All-MVC selections, 13 All-MVC academic honorees, two MVC Newcomer of the Year winners, two MVC Freshman of the Year recipients and one MVC Player of the Year. Prior to Missouri State, she started the women s basketball program at Drury University ( ). She made five straight NCAA Division II Tournament appearances, including a 2004 NCAA Division II national championship runner-up finish. Milleson led the Panthers to three Elite Eight appearances and six conference titles in seven seasons, while being named the Heartland Conference Coach of the Year four times. 5 Women s Basketball Game Notes SCOUTING DAYTON The Flyers (21-4, 14-0) have won 15 straight and clinched at least a share of the Atlantic 10 regular-season title on Sunday. Dayton is receiving 29 votes in the Associated Press poll for the second-most of teams just outside of the top 25. Last year, the Flyers won a share of the A-10 regular-season title and captured the conference tournament crown to reach the NCAA Tournament. Senior guard Jenna Burdette leads Dayton with 16.5 points and 97 assists. Jayla Scaife (14.8) and Lauren Cannatelli (13.1) also average double figures in scoring and JaVonna Layfield averages 11.8 points and 12.9 rebounds. SERIES HISTORY Mason is 1-5 all-time against the Flyers, with the lone win coming two years ago in the A-10 Tournament in Richmond. Dayton defeated the Patriots in Fairfax last January. Mason has never won in Dayton out of two tries. RECAPPING ST. BONAVENTURE Three players scored in double figures as the Patriots defeated St. Bonaventure on Sunday at home to tie the singleseason school record for wins with their 21st victory. Mason led from start to finish as graduate student Natalie Butler scored 23 points and grabbed 24 rebounds. Freshman Nicole Cardaño- Hillary added 19 points, including 17 in the second half, and senior Tayler Dodson had 15 points and eight rebounds. A-10 HOST With the win over VCU, the Patriots clinched a first-round home game in the upcoming Atlantic 10 Women s Basketball Championship. Assured one of the top eight seeds, Mason will host a first-round game at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 27 at EagleBank Arena with the opponent to be determined. The Patriots last hosted a conference tournament game in 2006 when still in the Colonial Athletic Association. GREAT START The Patriots tied the school record for wins in a season on Sunday against St. Bonaventure with their 21st victory. The mark has been reached four times before but not since Mason matched the squad for fewest amount of games (27) to reach 20 wins. The Patriots also clinched their first winning season in A-10 play and first since in conference play since when still in the Colonial Athletic Association. The 10 league wins also are their most since in 14 years and just the seventh time they ve recorded 10 league wins or more. This marks their first winning season since They jumped out to a 13-3 mark for their best start in the Division I era, which dates to Mason s start matched the team that went 13-3 for the season. Mason began the season 10-2 for the first time since In addition, the 11 non-conference wins by this year s squad were the most since the season. ATLANTIC 10 HONORS Natalie Butler and Nicole Cardaño-Hillary have raked in the weekly Atlantic 10 Conference honors this season. Butler, a graduate student from Fairfax Station, Va., has been named the A-10 Player of the Week seven times this season. Cardaño- Hillary, a 5-foot-7 freshman point guard from Madrid, Spain, has received A-10 Rookie of the Week honors five times, including this past Monday. She also was named the U.S. Basketball Writers Association s National Freshman of the Week after averaging 19 points, 3.0 steals and 3.0 assists last week in a pair of wins against VCU and St. Bonaventure. IN THE RANKINGS A couple of Patriots are among national and conference leaders in several categories. Graduate student Natalie Butler has the most double-doubles (27) in the country and leads the nation in rebounding (16.0 rpg). She also ranks first in the nation in both total rebounds (449) and defensive rebounds (307). Butler also leads the A-10 in scoring (18.5 ppg). Freshman teammate Nicole Cardaño-Hillary ranks third in the league in scoring (17.7 ppg) and is second-highest scoring freshman in the country. She also ranks first in the A-10 in steals (75), is tied for 20th in the nation overall and third among Division I freshmen. She ranks 11th in the country in field goal attempts with 471 (16.8 a game). RPI UPDATE The Patriots currently have an RPI of 106. They have been as high as 67 since the NCAA released its first RPI rankings in early December. Atlantic 10 rivals Dayton (33), Duquesne (61), Fordham (72) and George Washington (96) all rank in the top 100. Six of Mason s losses have been to teams ranked in the RPI top Michigan (45), Houston (57), Duquesne (61), Fordham (72) and George Washington (91, twice). They have two wins over top 100 teams: American (56) and Drake (78). HOME SWEET HOME The Patriots are 14-2 at home at EagleBank Arena this season. Mason won a program-record 13 straight home games before falling to Fordham on Jan. 28. The Patriots had won 12 straight this winter for their most consecutive home wins in one season (surpassing the previous record of eight straight). Mason s 12-0 start this year is the best start at home in program history. Their 13 wins are the most in a season in the 33-year history of EagleBank Arena (eclipsing the previous mark of 11). DISHING IT OUT The Patriots have dished out 398 assists this season on 681 made field goals. That s a 58.4 assist rate percentage, which is their highest as a team since the squad shelled out assists at a 62.5 percent rate. Six players have 30 assists or more this season, led by senior forward Tayler Dodson (86) and freshman guard Nicole Cardaño-Hillary (72). DOMINATING THE BOARDS The battle of the boards has been a significant barometer to Mason s success so far this season. The Patriots are 20-4 when winning the rebounding battle. When losing the edge on the glass, Mason is 0-3. They Patriots are rebounding in wins and and have a -0.3 margin in losses. They ve hauled in more than 50 rebounds eight times. On Dec. 7, they had a seasonhigh 56 rebounds against LIU Brooklyn. They are second in the country in total rebounds (1,260) and eighth in offensive rebounds (462). They lead the league and are fifth in the country in rebounding (45.0). They have the top rebounding margin (+10.6) in the A-10 and tied for sixth overall. REBOUND RECORD Graduate student Natalie Butler set the George Mason singleseason rebounding record on Jan. 24 against Saint Louis. She grabbed her 322nd rebound in the third quarter, eclipsing the previous mark of 321 by Valerie Douglas in She currently has 449, which leads the country. She needs just 10 rebounds to break the single-season Atlantic 10 record set in The 6-foot-5 center hauled in 28 rebounds against Davidson on Dec. 31, setting the school record and tying the A-10 mark. The native of Fairfax Station, Va., broke the Mason record of 27 set by Erin Cloyd on Dec. 7, 1977 against Georgetown. Butler matched the league mark set by Temple s Olivia Bradley on Jan. 26, She has posted four 20-plus rebound games this season and seven in her career. She grabbed her 1,000th career rebound on Jan. 17 against Richmond. DYNAMIC SCORERS Halfway through the season, the Patriots have shown they have several players capable of putting up big numbers every night. Graduate student Natalie Butler (18.5 ppg) and freshman Nicole Cardaño-Hillary (17.7 ppg) rank first and third, respectively, in the A-10 in scoring. The trio of Cardaño-Hillary (nine), Butler (10) and sophomore Jacy Bolton (one) has compiled point performances. It marked the first time since Feb. 12, 2014 that the Patriots had three players score more than 20 points in the same game. They ve all scored more than 15 points in the same game on three occassions. Cardaño-Hillary (75) leads the A-10 in steals. Cardaño-Hillary (56), Bolton (30) and sophomore Sarah Kaminski (46) account for 132 of the team s pointers. THE BUTLER DID IT Connecticut graduate transfer Natalie Butler has made a significant impact in her only year at Mason. The 6-foot-5 center from nearby Fairfax Station, Va., is averaging 16.0 rebounds, the most in the country. Her 18.5 points a game lead the A-10. She also leads the country in total rebounds (449) and defensive rebounds (307) and is fourth in offensive rebounds per game (5.1). In addition, she has posted 27 consecutive double-doubles, which is the most in the country this season. Her string of 27 straight double-doubles is the fourth-longest streak in Division I women s basketball history. More than half of her 53 career double-doubles have come at Mason. She set the program single-season record for rebounds against Saint Louis on Jan. 24 with her 322nd rebound, which eclipsed the previous record of 321 by Valerie Douglas in On Jan. 17 against Richmond, she grabbed her 1,000th career rebound. On Dec. 31, she set the school record with 28 rebounds, which also tied the A-10 record, against Davidson in addition to scoring 19 points. On Dec. 11, she scored her 1,000th career point in the third quarter of Mason s win over UMBC. On Dec. 21, she scored a career-high 35 points and grabbed 20 rebounds on a personal-best 13-of-16 shooting against Houston to become just the second player in the country this season with more than 35 points and 20 rebounds in the same game. She has had 10 games of 20 points or more (two with 30 points or more) and 18 games with at least 15 rebounds. The former Lake Braddock star is enrolled in graduate school at Mason to pursue a master s degree in global affairs. She played in 63 games at UConn over the last two seasons, averaging 5.4 points and 5.0 rebounds in 15.9 minutes a game, while helping the Huskies to two Final Fours and the 2016 national championship. Her father, Vernon, is the second all-time leading scorer and rebounder at Navy and helped lead the Midshipmen reach the Elite Eight in Her brother, James, is a redshirt freshman at Drexel. QUITE AN INTRO Freshman Nicole Cardaño-Hillary has made a name for herself, averaging 17.7 points to rank third in the Atlantic 10. The 5-foot-7 point guard from Madrid, Spain, has scored in double figures in all 28 games. Her 75 steals also are the most in the Atlantic 10. She ranks second among Division I freshmen in scoring and third in steals. She had a career-high seven steals at Rhode Island on Jan. 14, just one shy of the school record. She has scored more than 20 points nine times this season, including a career-high 26 against George Washington on Jan. 7 for the most points by a Mason freshman since Laura Kooij scored 41 against Tennessee-Chattanooga on Nov. 24, Against LIU Brooklyn on Dec. 7, she made the game-tying layup with 11 seconds left to force overtime in an eventual victory. She scored 22 points and made a career-high five 3-pointers at No. 24/23 Michigan on Nov. 10. TAYLER-MADE Senior captain Tayler Dodson has done yeoman s work this season. The 5-foot-11 forward from Harrisonburg, Va., native, leads the team with 88 assists (3.2 a game). She also ranks second on the team with 5.6 rebounds a game. Known more as a glue player, Dodson had one of the best offensive performances of her career on Jan. 28 against Fordham, scoring a season-high 16 points on 6-of-12 shooting. She dished out a career-high eight assists in the season opener at Michigan on Nov. 10. She grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds in consecutive games against Southeast Missouri State and American in November. She ranks 14th all-time in program history in career assists (229). Dodson s 465 rebounds are 22nd-most at Mason. She is just the seventh player in program history with more than 400 rebounds and 200 assists. BOLT-ON OF LIGHTNING Sophomore Jacy Bolton, an A-10 All-Rookie Team selection a year ago, has picked up where she left off. The 6-foot guard/forward from Drexel, Mo., currently ranks third on the team with 9.5 points and 4.6 rebounds a game. She leads the team in free-throw shooting (.800, minimum 30 attempts). She scored a careerhigh 21 points against Drake on Nov. 24 and was named to the All-Tournament Team of the Rocky Mountain Hoops Classic after averaging 19 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.0 steals in two games. PATRIOTS NEAR AND FAR Mason s roster features 15 players from nine states and three countries. Freshman Marika Korpinen hails from Turku, Finland but spent the last two years at Long Island Lutheran High School in Brookville, N.Y. Point guard Nicole Cardaño-Hillary (Madrid, Spain) was born in Spain but moved to Texas when she was 12. Redshirt sophomore Taylor Byrne also attended Lutheran High and hails from Massapequa, N.Y. Another New York native, Danielle Deoul (Washingtonville, N.Y.) joins the Patriots for her freshman year. A little closer to home, graduate transfer Natalie Butler (Fairfax Station, Va.), senior Tayler Dodson (Harrisonburg, Va.), freshman Camarie Gatling (Richmond, Va.) and sophomore Alexsis Grate (Hampton, Va.) are natives of Virginia. A couple of former high school teammates hail from just across the border in Maryland - redshirt juniors Casey Davis (Gambrills, Md.) and Camden Musgrave (Bowie, Md.). MCDONALD S QUARTET The Patriots boast four players who were nominated for the prestigious McDonald s All-American High School basketball team. Freshman Nicole Cardaño-Hillary (2017), junior Jewel Triggs (2015) and redshirt junior Casey Davis (2014) were all nominated as high school seniors. Connecticut graduate transfer Natalie Butler was nominated in 2013 while at Lake Braddock High School. TRANSFERRING IN George Mason s roster features three Division I transfers. Natalie Butler spent the last two seasons at Connecticut, helping the Huskies win the 2016 national championship. The Fairfax Station, Va., was immediately eligible to play at Mason because she graduated with her bachelor s degree from UConn in May. Prior to her time at UConn, she spent one year at Georgetown ( ) where she was named the Big East Freshman of the Year. Redshirt junior Camden Musgrave sat out the season after transferring from Central Connecticut State. The guard from Bowie, Md., averaged 10 points in 60 games at CCSU. She was named to the All- Northeast Conference Third Team in Redshirt sophomore Taylor Byrne sat out last year after transferring from Seton Hall.
