3 LAST GAME Seattle 60, Phoenix 70 - US Airways Center, Phoenix AZ. (7/12/15) With the Storm trailing by 14 at the half, Seattle quickly cut the lead to single digits on a deep three from Renee Montgomery and a bucket from Ramu Tokashiki to cut the Phoenix advantage to nine. Two straight baskets from Phoenix pushed it back to 13 but then Jewell Loyd pulled up for three and hit to bring it back to 10. Later in the quarter, Phoenix extended the lead back to 13 and Loyd drilled another three. She scored 10 of her team-high 16 points in the third. Despite the efforts of Loyd, the Mercury extended the lead and it was in large part due to Brittney Griner. She scored 15 points and hit all but one of her seven shots in the period as Phoenix took a 17-point lead into the fourth. Griner finished with 26 on the afternoon. But Seattle did not go away and it was led by the group of Loyd, Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis, Angel Goodrich, Markeisha Gatling, and Tokashiki, none of whom have more than three years of WNBA experience. With Phoenix up 68-53, Gatling showed some range and hit a jumper from 18-feet out to cut it to 13. On the following possession, Mosqueda-Lewis came off a screen and caught the pass from Tokashiki to hit her third three of the quarter. After a timeout, Goodrich found Tokashiki for the jumper and brought it to a game with 1:18 to go. Goodrich had a game-high eight assists. Seattle would get no closer but the youthful unit forced eight Phoenix turnovers in the quarter and scored nine points off the miscues. With the game tied at eight, the Storm swung the ball around and Crystal Langhorne drive to basket and kicked to Renee Montgomery for the three to take an 11-8 lead with 5:19 in the period. Much like it did on Friday, Phoenix answered the Seattle push with one of its own and went on a 7-0 run, capped by a Leilani Mitchell three, to go ahead In the second quarter with Phoenix up 26-17, Goodrich ran the pick and roll with Quanitra Hollingsworth and found her for the layup. On the next possession, Goodrich took it herself to the basket and hit the layup to cut the Phoenix lead to seven. The Mercury pushed back with an 8-2 run to go up and Loyd provided a spark to keep Seattle close. On consecutive possessions, she hit a jumper, found Gatling for the layup, and hit a step back jumper to pull the Storm within nine. 4 TEAM NOTES JEWELL BACK IN LINEUP Rookie Jewell Loyd has also become more comfortable in the WNBA and it is showing. She returned to the starting lineup on July 10 against Phoenix and, over her last seven games, she is averaging 13.3 points per game and dropped a career-high 21 against Tulsa on June 28. She is shooting 45 percent from the field and is 25-for-27 from the stripe during this stretch. HOME, SWEET HOME After playing six of the last eight games away from KeyArena, the friendly confines will be a welcomed sight as the Storm begin a threegame homestand on Wednesday. It is the first time since a three-game stretch in mid-june that Seattle will play consecutive games at home. NO REST FOR THE WEARY Coming off six of eight games on the road in 19 days, the Storm has had very little time to rest as it has averaged 1.5 days in between game days this season, whereas the Storm s opponents have averaged 3.2 days of rest. The same held on Wednesday as Seattle had two days in between games and Los Angeles comes in with three days of rest. STORMING THE CHARTS Several Storm players find themselves in the upper tier of the WNBA in some key categories. Crystal Langhorne continues to be efficient and is shooting 56 percent from the field, which is fourth best in the league. Sue Bird ranks fourth in assists with 4.9 per game. Ramu Tokashiki and Abby Bishop have combined for 2.2 blocks from the power forward position with Tokashiki ranked 13th (1.07) and Bishop at 11th (1.13). Veteran guard Renee Montgomery has been dangerous from three and has hit 40 percent of her shots, 10th best in the league. THE BENCH MOB The Storm wrapped up one of its toughest stretches of the season with six of eight games on the road, which included seven cities in 19 days. As it has done all season, the bench played a major role in that stretch. Over the last five games, the second unit has averaged 29 points and for the season is averaging 28.9 points per contest (second in the league). The Seattle bench is also accounting for 42.3 percent of the team s total points, which is tops in the WNBA. On June 28, it poured out a league-high 54 points, which included a career-high 21 points from both Ramu Tokashiki and Jewell Loyd. Enlisting three rookies on the roster for 2015, the Storm enters the year with the organization s youngest team in history looking to make a splash in Emerald City. In 2001, the Storm relied heavily on two rookies, number one draft pick Lauren Jackson, and guard, Semeka Randall, the first season that Seattle had a winning percentage above.500. The 2015 season looks to number one draft pick Jewell Loyd and number 3 draft pick Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis to help lead the organization into a new era. FROM JAPAN WITH LOVE Ramu Tokashiki spent the season dominating the Women s Japan Basketball League. Tokashiki led the league in a majority of categories, including scoring (18 points per game), rebounding (11.5 per game), blocked shots (2.13 per game) and field goal percentage (59.8%). The 23 year old Japan native was the postseason MVP and was also named MVP of the WJBL in her rookie season. Tokashiki makes the move from Japan to Seattle in hopes of joining the Storm as a rookie in the WNBA. Tokashiki is the third Japanese player ever to join the WNBA. BIGS ARE BACK In 2014, the Storm had just two players over 6-2. Through a revamped roster, Seattle has added height to the roster. Four players have been brought in to add more height to the team. Abby Bishop is a 6-3 forward who spent 2014 leading Australia s WNLB in scoring (23), and rebounding (10.6). Ramu Tokashiki, Bishop s 6-3 counterpart, led the Japan s WJBL in four categories, points (18), rebounds (11.5), blocks (2.13), and field goal percentage (59.8).
