OPENING TIP The Alma College men s basketball team visits NCAA Division I Central Michigan University for the second straight season. The game at Central is designated as an exhibition for the Scots, and Alma s statistics will not count towards its regular-season totals. NCAA Divison III schools are allotted two exhibitions per season, and the Scots have used them on high quality competition. Alma played defending NAIA champion Cornerstone University in the preseason for its first exhibition, while Central is the defending Mid-American Conference champions. This year is the 105th season of varsity basketball at Alma College, and the fifth season under Head Coach Sam Hargraves. LAST YEAR Alma fell by a margin to the Chippewas in last year s meeting, as Central built up a 31-point lead by halftime. Tyler Edwards was the only Scot to score in double-figures, netting 10 points. AMILY TIES Sophomore Kevin Gamble s father, Kevin Gamble, Sr., is an assistant coach with the Chippewas. Gamble attended Sacred Heart Academy in Mount Pleasant and has seen action in 11 career games at Alma, averaging nearly 10 minutes per appearance. SCOTS PICKED TO INISH OURTH IN MIAA Alma College was picked to finish fourth by the head coaches of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association. Hope, ranked No. 16 in the D3hoops.com Preseason Top 25 poll, was picked to win the league and received six out of seven first-place votes. Trine was projected to finish second and received one first place vote. Calvin, which won the MIAA last year, finished third in the balloting, five points ahead of the Scots. 2 Week 1 at Ohio Northern Game Notes Page 2 NEWS AND NOTES GUESS WHO S BACK The Scots return all but one player from last year s team that qualified for the MIAA Tournament for the first time since 1997 and posted the first winning record in league play since All five starters from the squad are back for the campaign. Ninety-six percent of Alma s scoring is back from last season, as well as players that accounted for 96 percent of the team s minutes a year ago. Alma led the MIAA last season, holding opponents to.409 from the field. The Scots were also the top three-point shooting team in the MIAA, hitting an average of eight three-pointers per game and making shots at a.373 rate. Senior Scott Nikodemski was the MIAA s top assist man, while sophomore Doug Bradfield led the league in blocked shots. ALMOST THERE... Senior DJ Beckman is on the verge of becoming the 11th player in school history to score 1,000 or more points in his career. A four-year starter, Beckman enters the week with 980 career points and averages 12.7 points per game. RECORD BOOK WATCH Senior DJ Beckman ranks second in career three point field goals made with 156. The record holder is Andy Mangin, who hit 249 three-pointers from Senior Scott Nikodemski currently ranks seventh on the all-time career assists list with 211, 16 behind Mike Bjorne, who tallied 227 from Nikodemski is also eighth on the career steals list with 76 and trails Carl Hill ( ) by six for the seventh spot. At some point in the season, Beckman and Nikodemski will enter the top 10 list for most games played in an Alma uniform. Beckman has 77 career games, nine away from the 10th spot, held by Isaac Smith ( ). Nikodemski has made 71 appearances in his career. Sophomore Doug Bradfield, who set a school record with 46 blocked shots, is nine blocks away from entering the top 10 list for career blocks. Jason Osborn ( ) currently holds the 10th spot with 55 blocks. TARTAN TIDBITS Doug Bradfield posted his first career double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds at Ohio Northern. Bradfield tied a career-high for rebounds and tallied double-digit boards for the third time in his career. DJ Beckman scored in double figures for the 50th time in his career at Ohio Northern and has scored 10 or more points in 65 perecent (50-77) of his appearances. Scott Nikodemski posted double-figure scoring totals for the 30th time in his career at Ohio Northern. OTHER ITEMS O INTEREST Seniors DJ Beckman and Scott Nikodemski will serve as the team captains for the 2015 campaign. The Scots posted a 7-1 record at home last season, but will play their first four regular-season games on the road. Alma s first home contest is December 2 against North Park (Ill.). WHAT S NEXT Alma continues its season-opening road trip, traveling to Delaware, Ohio, on Saturday and Sunday, Nov , to take part in the Great Lakes Challenge, hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University. He was named to the position in May Hargraves also serves as the assistant athletic director for advancement at Alma College and as an advisor for the campus chapter of ellowship of Christian Athletes. Since Hargraves arrival, the Scots have become a very competitive program in the MIAA. During the season, Alma recorded 12 victories, the most wins since with campaign. The Scots also posted a 9-5 mark in MIAA to finish fourth and qualify for the MIAA Tournament for the first time since The league record was the best at Alma since the season. The Scots also defeated Calvin for the first tiime since , and Hope for the first time since last season. Hargraves, a native of Alanson, Mich., played and graduated from Calvin College after a stellar career at Alanson High School. While at Calvin, Hargraves played three years of varsity basketball, and as a senior, was named to the All-MIAA Second Team (1998). In his final campaign, he led the league in threepoint field goals made with 71, good for ninth in Calvin College history. He ended his career as one of the top three-point shooters at the school, ranking eighth in career three-pointers made with 143 and 12th in three-point field goal percentage at 40.2 percent ( ). He was also a career 84 percent free throw shooter. A 1994 graduate of Alanson High School, Hargraves garnered irst Team Class D All-State honors, amassing 1,507 career points in just three seasons. During his senior year, he averaged an impressive 29 points per game. Hargraves coaching career began as an assistant at Alma College from Other assistant coaching experiences for Hargraves includes eight years at NCAA Division II and GLIAC members Hillsdale College and Northwood University, as well as three years of NCAA Division III experience at Lawrence University and Dominican University (IL). Hargraves, who earned his Masters degree in physical education from central Michigan university in 2000, resides in Alma with his wife Annalyse.
