2 O U T L O O K D E E P, H U N G R Y H U S K I E S H O P E T O F E A S T I N When a team spends an entire season ranked in the Golfweek Top 10, finishes 14th at the NCAA Championships and leaves disappointed, you know you re dealing with an elite program. When that program s two-time All-American records the school s first ever top 10 NCAA finish and feels as though she should have done better, you know you have a determined squad. Take that elite program and bring back the same determined squad for another shot at the title, and you ve got the 2006 Washington women s golf team. Head Coach Mary Lou Mulflur knows that for her team to improve, she ll need her younger players to follow the example set by senior Paige Mackenzie, the aforementioned All-American and 2005 NCAA 10th-place finisher. She brings a lot to the table, Mulflur says. A lot of young people are good athletes, but they don t have the rest. Paige has it all. I ve told more than one member of my team, If I were you, I would follow her around like a little lost puppy dog, and do everything that she does. She s so successful in everything she takes on. And it s not a secret how she does it. She s very efficient in how she practices, how she studies and how she approaches things. She works very hard. Mackenzie made the most of that hard work over the summer, following up her NCAA performance by finishing first at the U.S. Open qualifier in Denver and then placing second at the Colorado Open. She completed her two-week stay in Colorado by placing 13th at the U.S. Women s Open, third-highest among amateurs at the event. Mackenzie was the runner-up at the Pacific Northwest Golf Association s Amateur Championship before winning the Women s Trans National Golf Association championship at the Mid Pines Inn and Golf Club in Southern Pines, N.C. She also advanced to the semifinals of the 103rd North and South Women s Amateur Championship. Mackenzie continued to excel in the fall, placing second individually while Two-time All-American Paige Mackenzie finished the 2005 fall season ranked No. 1 by Golfweek Magazine Final Golfweek Standings 1. Duke UCLA Auburn Pepperdine Arizona State Georgia Oklahoma State Ohio State Tennessee Washington Washington Spring Schedule Date Event Course Location helping Washington to a second place finish at the Topy Cup in Fukushima, Japan. She followed that up by placing fourth at the Stanford Intercollegiate, and finished the fall with a team-best stroke average. She was named the Pacific Northwest Golf Association s 2005 Women s Golfer of the Year and enters the spring season as the nation s top-rated women s golfer, according to Golfweek magazine. Fellow senior Sung Ea Lee should also play a vital role in the Huskies success. An honorable mention All-American in 2004, Lee finished second at the 2005 Washington State Amateur, and advanced to match play at the 2005 U.S. Public Links Championship. Though she had some difficulty during the fall season, Mulflur expects her to return to form. Sung had a disappointing fall, by her own admission, Mulflur says. So now it s a matter of learning from that experience and just playing the game without worrying about consequences and outcomes. She s got a tremendous amount of talent, a great feel for the game and I m confident that she ll play well for us this spring. J u n i o r A m b e r P r a n g e w a s Washington s second-best finisher at the 2005 NCAA Championships, placing 16th. She was named an honorable mention All- Pac-10 pick, and advanced to the Round of 32 at the 2005 Western Amateur. Prange s best finish of the fall came at the Topy Cup, where she finished second on the team. Her stroke average was third-best on the squad. Junior Courtney McCracken was also a solid contributor for Washington in the fall, leading the way for Washington at the Ihlanfeldt Invitational and finishing the season with a stroke average, second-best on the team. Her summer was highlighted by a quarterfinal finish at the Western Amateur. A m b e r a n d C o u r t n ey b o t h really stepped up in the fall, Mulflur remarks. Courtney is somebody who s really emerging as a leader. She s starting to become a little more vocal about how she feels about things. She s coming into her own, and she s just going to continue to get better for us. Mulflur also expects contributions from other squad members. Our other two juniors, Ashley Bickerton and Amy Wang, didn t play a lot for us this fall, but they re very talented, Mulflur says. That is where the depth of our squad comes in. I m glad to have the players who aren t in the lineup all the time, who are constantly pushing the players that are in the lineup. Sophomore Kim Shin rounds out the Husky squad, as freshman Molly Boyle will redshirt. Sung Ea Lee After that, should the Huskies advance, will come the NCAA Championships in Columbus, Ohio. After last year s disappointment, the goal will be clear. Obviously our goal is to win a national championship and we know we have the talent to do that, Mulflur says. None of the players, Paige included, was satisfied with the way we played at the end of last year, and the way we played this fall. So we have to step it up and I am confident that we will. Amber Prange Kim has a ton of talent, Mulflur says. I think she sometimes puts too much pressure on herself. She needs to learn not to get so worked up about it internally. Even though she has this really calm exterior, you can tell she s churning inside. She needs to be comfortable with what she s doing at that moment. Another important player for the Huskies this season will be their home course, Washington National, which will host the 2006 NCAA West Regional. After traveling across the country to play in the East Regional in 2005, Mulflur is appreciative of the chance to play on a familiar course at such a crucial time. Last year was really hard, she says. When you get sent three time zones away and the players are in the middle of midterms it makes things difficult. So just to know that all we have to do is get in the van and drive to Washington National we re all very excited about that. Being comfortable and knowing the course will be great. 13 M A R Y L O U M U L F L U R H E A D C O A C H 2 3 R D S E A S O N In the history of the Husky women s golf team, two individuals stand out as the cornerstones for the program. The first is Edean Ihlanfeldt, the namesake of the Huskies annual fall tournament. She was Washington s first coach. So dedicated to seeing women have an opportunity to compete on the intercollegiate level, Ihlanfeldt never accepted a paycheck for her efforts. She funneled her salary back into the program. The second is current head coach Mary Lou Mulflur, who is in her 23rd season directing the Huskies. A player for Ihlanfeldt, Mulflur s passion and commitment to Husky golf makes her former mentor proud. Mulflur s dedication, teaching skills and fundraising abilities have allowed her to build the Husky program into one of the nation s most competitive teams on an annual basis. Last season the Huskies placed 14th at the NCAA Championships, with junior Paige Mackenzie recording Washington s first ever top 10 NCAA finish. She placed 10th and received honorable mention All-America honors after the season. The 2005 season was the 13th consecutive year the Huskies have advanced to the NCAA Regional Championships. Washington has competed at the Regionals every year since its inception in In 2004 Washington experienced one of its greatest campaigns, finishing sixth at the NCAA Championships. It was the highest finish ever by a team at the NCAAs. The Huskies were led by Mackenzie, who placed 11th at the national championships and was named a secondteam All-American. Classmate Sung Ea Lee was named an honorable mention All-American. In Mulflur s tenure at Washington, six Huskies have earned All-America honors a total of nine times. In 2001 Mulflur led Washington to a 16th-place finish at the NCAA Championships. At the time, it was the best showing by a Husky team at the national championships. s 2002 NCAA Championships appearance was the fifth by the Huskies over a stretch of eight years. That season the Huskies won Oregon Duck Invitational and the Peg Barnard California Collegiate and tied for fifth at the Pac-10 Championships. Mulflur s players have also achieved in the classroom. Mackenzie has been named to the National Golf Coaches Association s All-Scholar Team in each of the last two seasons. During Mulflur s tenure 15 golfers have earned the distinction on 22 occasions. Longest tenure of any current Husky coach in any sport Played in the U.S. Open in 1979 and Pac-10 Coach of the Year 1999 Pac-10 Coach of the Year One of the first female student-athletes to receive an athletic scholarship from Washington Coached eight players who have earned All-Pac- 10 honors a total of 14 times Coached six players who have earned NGCA All- American honors a total of nine times Had 15 players earn NGCA All-Scholar Athlete honors 22 times Coached to seven NCAA Championships appearances Coached current California head coach Nancy Kessler-McDaniel and current assistant coaches Kelli Kamimura (Pepperdine) and Kari Sampson (Washington State) Twice during Mulflur s career she has been named the Pac-10 Conference s Coach of the Year. The first time she received the honor was in She picked up the award for the second time in In 1995, Mulflur directed the Huskies to their first team NCAA Finals appearance on the strength of a sixth-place finish in the NCAA West Regional. In 1988, the had its best Pac-10 finish ever, placing third in the conference tournament. That year brought Mulflur her first Pac-10 Coach of the Year award. Mulflur has coached several Husky players who have gone on to play professionally or coach. Nancy Kessler-McDaniel, who played at from 1984 to 1988, went on to play professionally and is now the head coach at California. Former Husky All-American Kelli Kamimura is an assistant coach at Pepperdine and Kari (Martin) Sampson is an assistant at Washington State. Mulflur, regarded as one of the most successful golfers to come out of the, came to Washington in 1976 and was one of the first female athletes to receive a scholarship at Washington. The Portland, Ore., native went on to earn four letters as a Husky. During her collegiate career Mulflur won three regular-season tournaments, including the inaugural Ihlanfeldt Invitational in To date, Kamimura is the only Husky golfer with more career wins than Mulflur. While attending Grant High School, Mulflur won state high school titles in 1974 and She also won the 1975 Oregon junior championship. Mulflur won Southern Oregon titles in 1980, 1982, 1995 and 1997 as well as the Oregon Coast Invitational in 1979, 1982, and Mulflur has competed in five United States Golf Association events The U.S. Open in 1979 and 1980 and the U.S. Amateur in 1979, 1980 and In addition she competed in four National Collegiate Championships. Mulflur graduated from Washington in 1980 with a degree in speech communications. She is a former vice-president of the National Golf Coaches Association and served on the LPGA SAFECO Classic Advisory Board. She currently serves as a member of the NCAA Division I Women s Golf West Regional Advisory Committee. She appears annually as a celebrity player in several local golf events and fundraisers. In October of 2004, Mulflur was inducted into the Portland High School Hall of Fame. 13
