M Newsletter Dec 2011/Jan 2012 PISTOL SILHOUETTE RECORD SET (See Below) FIRST SUNDAY MATCHES, By James Cravener, Match Director RANGE CONSTRUCTION IN PROGRESS REGULAR LOW POWER MATCH It was a beautiful day for a match and twenty-three shooters signed up. Today was a beautiful day to shoot and we had a pretty good crowd. There are actually 4 Matches shot on the first Sunday, Big Bore and Small Bore Hunter s Pistol, Cowboy 22 Rifle and Cowboy Low Power Rifle. The big event of the day was that Russ Gould, one of our Clovis shooters, set a record using a pistol. We don t have records on the older Pistol Matches, but the old timers say they think it was about 36, in any match. Today Russ shot a total of 39 in the Small Bore Hunter s Pistol Match using a T/C Contender pushing both Wolf and Ely ammo. Russ only missed one target and that was, of all things, a pig. Naturally, he won that match. Bill Hamilton won AA Class with 18, A Class was won by John Wostal with 14, and Allen Jones won B Class with 10. Janie Wostal won Unclassified with 3. Russ also won the Big Bore Pistol Match, a score of 33. AA Class was won by David Stanfield with 18 Ernie Edmonston won Overall in the Cowboy Low Power Match with the score of 30 after a shoot off with Alan Bloomer. This gave Alan AAA Class money. Bob Elder won A Class with 26. In 22 Cowboy Rifle, Keith Odell came through to win Overall with 23. Bob Beeson won AA Class with 20, and Sonny Odell won A Class with 11. Others making it out today were Ronnie Gould (no kin to Russ), Ron Young, Marty Tressell, Scotty Davis and Mike Borem. Thanks to everyone who made it out today and we hope to see all of you next month. BENCH REST CHICKEN SILHOUETTE MATCH, By Bill Kennedy Match Director The word of the day was Challenging, most of our shots where a challenge. Winds had started blowing before sun up and where around all threw the match. I would have thought that we would have had less shooters but I was wrong. We had one iron sight shooter and 15 scope shooters. The over all Iron sight winner was John Wostal shooting a Yugo 48A chambered in 8X57 firing 1954 Yugo surplus ammo. John got 12 using Iron sights in wind shooting at an 8 x 10 target.

2 Over All scope winner was Kenny Padilla who shot 39; he used a 107SMK chambered in 243 Using 48 grains of H-1000 CCBR2. Master class winner was Ernie Lewis with 36 after beating Tom Hargrove in a shoot off. The AAA class winner was Carroll Hargrove with 35. The AA class winner was Alan Bloomer with 31 and a promotion to AAA. The A class winner was Scotty Davis with 22 and James Cravener also with 25. Now at the start of the match, I told Scotty he was in A class and put him down as the winner and I was wrong, which means I will be paying the match fees for the other two shooters in A class. The B class winner was Bob Beeson. Thank you to all the people that shot the match and the guys who came out to watch and those who help pick up the targets. MILITARY RIFLE MATCH, By Ernie Edmonston standing in for Paco Wostal There were only 8 showing up today, the weather was far from perfect with clouds, scattered showers, and a cold wind that made the eyes water. I won Overall with a 102 year old Argentine Mauser in 7.65 Argentine, and 20 gr behind a Lyman 200 gr bullet. I picked off 9 chickens, all 10 pigs, 6 turkeys, and only 2 rams. Alan Bloomer won AAA Class with a 7.7 Jap rifle that still has sights for leading aircraft, Jim Byrd won AA Class with the ever faithful 1903A3, and Eddie Phillips won A Class with the classic 8mm Mauser. Others out today were Ernie Lewis, Bob Beeson, Scotty Davis, and Randy Dana. Here s hoping that next month more people will dig Grandpa s old Mauser out of the closet and give it a try. COLUMBUS DAY MATCH 10/10/11 We had eight shooters out for the Columbus Day cast bullet any gun shoot. Ernie Lewis won overall in the scope category with a score of 36. Ernie used a Remington 700 chambered for.308 Winchester. He shot a 150-grain RCBS bullet ahead of 22 grains/imr 4198 and he took 10 chickens, 9 pigs, 7 turkeys and 10 rams. Carroll Hargrove won AAA score 21. And Virdis Isler won B class with a score of 17. For the iron sight category Ernie Edmonston won over all with a score of 32. Ernie shot an Argentine model 1909 chambered for 7.62x53mm. He used a Lyman bullet ahead of 20 grains A2400 to take 7 chickens, 9 pigs, 9 turkeys and 7 rams. Other winners were: James Cravener AA score 25. Sonny Odell A score 12. O. F MATCH, Another windy day on the range and only 6 shooters showed up, but shoot we did. Ernie Lewis and I tied up for the high score of the day with 25 each. Ernie Lewis won the one shot shoot off. He used a Marlin 336 in caliber, an RCBS 150 gr. slug ahead of 22.0 gr. AA Had I won the shoot off, Scotty Davis would have taken AAA Class and Ernie Lewis would have taken AA Class. Since I didn t, I won AAA Class and Bob Elder won AA Class. Ron Young just barely edged out Sonny Odell 15 to 14 for A Class. CAST BULLET, LOW POWER Well, today was a real nice day to be on the range shooting. We had a light breeze, and a slightly cool morning. Today we had 12 shooters come out, 4 shooting iron sight, and 8 with scope. Overall iron sight was won by Ernie Edmonston with a 29. Ernie hit 8 chickens, 8 pigs, 8 turkeys, and 5 rams. He was shooting a T/C in 30 Carbine with 130 gr bullet over 11.0 gr H-116. AAA was won by Mike Russo with 16, and Ron Young took A class with 21. Ernie Lewis won overall scope with a 36. Ernie took 10 chickens, 9 pigs, 8 turkeys, and 9 rams. Ernie was shooting a Remington 700 in 221 Fireball, with a 55 gr. RCBS bullet over 12.4 gr. H4198. AAA was won by Jim Byrd with a 34. AA went to Carroll Hargrove with a 31, and Eddie Phillips won A class with 25. We would like to see more of our members come out and enjoy this match. SOUTHEASTERN NM F-CLASS MID-RANGE OCTOBER 15, 2011 By Jerry King We had a fair turn out as only 11 shooters showed up. I do not know what happened. I heard it was hunting season and other reasons. Thanks to all the shooters that showed up. We had four new shooters today, and I hope that they will be back next year. The weather was great for shooting and there was a slight breeze back at the 600 yard line. Next year again, let s try for both Classes: F- TR and FO. We will need a minimum of 5 shooters in class to have that class. Remember that in January we will again be starting at 10 A.M.. A special congratulation to Freddie Halton for shooting perfect score: x MATCH WINNERS Freddy Halton: Match Winner x Kenny Padilla: HM/EX Class Winner x Danny Jones: SS/MK Class Winner 421 9x MATCH SCORES 1. Eight people signed in to shoot. Ernie Lewis won over-all in the scope category. Ernie used a Remington model 700 chambered for the.308 Winchester. He shot an RCBS 150 grain bullet ahead of 22 grains/imr Ernie took 9 chickens, 10 pigs, 7 turkeys and 9 rams for a score of 35. The only other scope shooter was Tom Hargrove and he won AAA with a score of 34. O.F. CAST BULLET MATCH 10/19/11 A really nice day, even though a little cold, for our monthly O.F. Cast Bullet any Gun shoot. We had seven shooters sign up, three scope and four iron sight competitors. Ernie Lewis won the overall scope category with a score of 33. Ernie used a Remington 700 chambered in 308 Winchester shooting a 150-grain RCBS bullet ahead of 22 grains/imr Ernie took 10 chickens, 9 pigs, 6 turkeys and 8 rams. The only other scope winner was Jim Byrd with a score of 30, which gave him AA class. In the iron sight category Ernie Edmonston was the big winner with a score of 28. Ernie took 10 chickens, 4 pigs, 8 turkeys and 6 rams. Ernie used a Ruger #1 chambered for the 7mm Remington Benchrest cartridge. His load was an RCBS 168 grain bullet ahead of 20 grains/h Other winners were: Carroll Hargrove AA-score 27, and Ron Young A-score 27. DENNIS SULLIVAN 22 MATCH It was another beautiful morning on the range with just a taste of breeze. It seems like the attendance is down at all the matches this month and today was no exception. I suspect the hunting seasons have a lot to do with this. Anyway, there were 16 shooters out today which isn t all that bad and we shot as if we had twice that many. We had 5 shooters using iron sights and 11 using rifles equipped with scopes. In the Scope category, Ernie Lewis won Overall with the score of 36 using a Savage Mk. II with Wolf Target Match ammo. He knocked off all the chickens, 9 pigs, 7 turkeys, and all of the rams. Alan Bloomer was one point behind and won AAA Class along with a promotion to Master Class. The cheese has just got a lot more binding for Alan. AA Class was won by Jim Montgomery with 27. Jim has improved a lot here lately. We had no A or B Class shooters, but Archie Linton won Unclassified with 26 and jumped right into AA Class. In the Iron Sight Match, I managed to win overall with my old BSA 12/15 and CCI ammo. I started with a miserable 4 turkeys, but managed 8 rams, 9 chickens, and all 10 pigs for a total of 31. Scotty Davis won AAA Class with 24. It took a shoot off between Ron Young and O. L. Adcock to determine AA Class winner. O. L. came through. Both had scored 26. There were no A or B Class iron sight shooters. CAST BULLET, ANY GUN Today was really a nice day to be on the range. There was a very slight breeze and the temperature was just right. We only had 11 shooters out today, 6 with iron sights, and 5 shooting scopes. Overall Iron sight was won by Alan Bloomer, with a 31. Alan hit 9 chickens, 7 pigs, 8 turkeys, and 7 rams. Master class went to Ernie Edmonston with a 30. AAA went to Scotty Davis with 25, and A class went to Mike Boren with 27. Overall scope class was won by Ernie Lewis with a 35. Ernie took 10 chickens, 10 pigs, 7 turkeys and 8 rams. Master class went to Bill Hamilton with a 32. AAA went to Dave Farmer with 29, and B class went to Virdis Isler with TH SATURDAY MATCH, Anytime there is a 5 th Saturday in the month, we try to have a Pistol Caliber Cowboy Rifle Match on the 200 meter range. There was some frost on the pumpkin for the first time this fall and it was Foggy. It was so foggy that we waited until about 10:30 AM until it lifted enough for us to see the targets. By then, we only had 5 shooters left, but we shot anyway. My score was the highest turned in, 25. I used a 119 year old Winchester model 1892 that was redone to 44 Magnum, a Saeco 240 gr. bullet, and 9.0 gr. Trail Boss. I scored on 9 chickens, 7 pigs, 2 turkeys, and 7 rams. For some reason, turkeys were a real pain for everybody. Ron Young and James Cravener scored on the most turkeys with 4 each. Alan Bloomer won AAA Class with 24, James Cravener won AA Class with 17, and Ron Young beat out Sonny Odell 18 to 9 for A Class. 3

4 Even under ideal conditions people have trouble locating their car keys in a pocket finding their cell phone, and pinning the tail on the donkey-but I d bet everyone can find and push the snooze button from three feet away, in about 1.7 seconds, eyes closed, first time every time. RANGE CONSTRUCTION UPDATE By Ernie Edmonston, Treasurer On October 28 th we paid off our dirt contractor for building the new ranges. This consisted of a new pay on the East end of the IPSC/Steel Challenge range. This bay is 150 yards deep and was built primarily for the IPSC 3 Gun Match. However, it will add an additional sight-in type range when not otherwise occupied. On the far East End is a complete new Range no. 8 which has an elevated firing line and impact berms at 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, and 600 yards. The berms were also raised around range number 6 for safety considerations, and a new 500 yard berm was built for the F Class Match on range no. 4. We hope to put additional shooting tables in the new bay and range no. 8 in the near future. Also, we are considering the construction for additional sun shades at these locations along with the deep bay on range 2.. Hopefully, this will relieve a lot of traffic from the existing sight-in range. Sometimes I m in Capable, and I go there more often as I m getting older. And, sometimes I think I am in Vincible but life shows me I am not. I have been in Deepshit many times: the older I get the easier it is to get there. HIGH POWER RIFLE BENCH IRON SIGHT SILHOUETTE MATCH By Bill Kennedy Match Director The day started off ok, the temperature was mild and the winds where gusty. The number of shooters was higher than I expected with the wind, but we had 11 shooters. In the end Doug Mathis out shot us all to win the match. He used a Remington 40X chambered in 6MM loaded with a 105 A-max and 45.5 grains of R-19. Doug had a total of 30, taking 8 chickens, 7 pigs, 8 turkeys and 7 rams. The AA class winner was John Wostal with a 10. Alan Bloomer won A class with 26. I won B class with 5. Ron Young won unclassified with 7 and will now be shooting in B class. Thank you to all the people that shot the match and the guys who came out to watch. REGULAR LOW POWER MATCH NO Match --- WINDY--- BENCH REST CHICKEN SILHOUETTE MATCH By Bill Kennedy Match Director IMPORTANT: Please do not shoot at targets placed on the ground in ANY range. Also, Place target stands near the berm at the different locations. Any bullet striking the ground is almost certain to ricochet and very often goes over the intended backstop creating a very dangerous situation for persons using adjacent ranges. The day was really nice with not much wind and moderate temperatures. This month we had 11 shooters. Ernie Lewis was the over all winner with 39. Ernie was using a Savage model 12 F/TR chambered in 308 shooting a 155-matchking bullet and 47g of Varget. The AAA class winner was Alan Bloomer with 37. The AA class winner was Doug Mathis. In A class the winner was Ron Young with 29. The B class winner was Bob Beeson with 10. We had a great match and just remember that the second Saturday of next month will be this match. Thank you to all the people that shot the match and the guys who came out to watch. I also want to thank the new shoots that came out and the shooters 4
