It worked so well that the Mystics might just stay with the same approach all series. ''My teammates have trust in me in those situations to attack and try to make the right read,'' Delle Donne said. ''I was flowing today, so they kind of just ran the offense through me. I just had to make reads or attack. ''Delle Donne had 32 points and 13 rebounds, Ariel Atkins added 15 points and the Mystics beat the Dream in the first game of a best-of-five WNBA semifinal on Sunday. The Mystics hit all 20 of their free-throw attempts. Elizabeth Williams finished with 15 points and 14 rebounds for Atlanta, which never led. Alex Bentley's 3 pulled the Dream within three points midway through the fourth quarter, and Tiffany Hayes scored six straight points to make it a three-point game in the closing minute. But Hayes missed an ensuing layup, and Jessica Breland couldn't hit a straightaway 3 on Atlanta's last possession before time expired. ''It wasn't pretty,'' Mystics guard Natasha Cloud said after scoring 13 points with a game-high six assists. ''It was an ugly game, but we came out with a win.'' Hayes, the Dream's season scoring leader, had 17 points but was mostly a non-factor until she was able to hit some layups in transition in the fourth quarter. In a matchup of two of the league's hottest teams, Delle Donne was too much for Atlanta, using her size and agility to win matchups inside for layups, bank shots and forced turnovers. She was at her best in the third after the Dream cut the lead to eight. Jessica Breland blocked her midrange jumper, but Delle Donne pulled the ball back, dribbled and pivoted to bank in a layup that made it ''If someone else is flowing, we kind of run the offense through them,'' she said. ''That's the way our team is - unselfish, and it's why we're successful.'' The Dream had won 15 of 17, but it won't get any easier the rest of the way with Angel McCoughtry, their longtime star guard, out for the season with a knee injury sustained earlier this month. Washington, which has won 10 of 11, got consecutive 3s by Atkins and Cloud to open the third and take its biggest lead at 15, but Atlanta stayed close and trailed by four when Monique Billings converted a three-point play in the closing seconds of the period. Bentley's layup in the first minute of the fourth cut the lead to one, but Delle Donne answered with a layup. When Bentley hit a 3 that made it 74-71, Delle Donne followed a few minutes later with a 3 that put the Mystics up ''I think Breland and Monique Billings did a good job on her one-on-one,'' Dream coach Nicki Collen said. ''I think what we've got to do a better job of taking the arc away from them on Tuesday night.'' FARTHER TO GO Washington is trying to advance past the semifinals for the first time in its 21 seasons, but they're back for the second straight year after getting swept in 2017 by eventual champion Minnesota. The Dream have ended three seasons in the finals but were swept each time. LITTLE TOO LATE Hayes banked in a fast break jumper and hit the ensuing free throw to pull Atlanta within three with 58.9 seconds to go, but her contributions were few in the first three quarters. She was 6 for 15 from the field and hit just one of five attempts beyond the arc. STAR TIME Delle Donne, who finished third in the league's MVP voting, was 10 for 22 from the field, hit all 10 of her free-throw attempts and grabbed seven offensive boards. with a knee injury and cheered on her teammates from the bench. Dream coach Nicki Collen is expecting Delle Donne to play unless she hears otherwise. ''I wouldn't count her out. She seemed to be walking around just fine after the game,'' Collen said. If Delle Donne can't return? ''It does change the game plan, of course,'' Collen replied. ''You'd be taking one of the best five players in the world out of the equation. But we'll prepare like she's going to play.'' After Delle Donne's injury, Washington struggled to create offensive chances down the stretch. A traveling call gave the ball to Atlanta, which went ahead for good, 76-74, on Elizabeth Williams layup off an inbounds pass. Ariel Atkins missed a 3-pointer, Washington turned it over again and Kristi Toliver's long 3 at the buzzer bounced off the rim, allowing the Dream to hold on. Bentley provided a spark for the Dream, especially after Brittney Sykes went to the bench with four fouls early in the third quarter and the Mystics pushed out to a 10-point lead, the biggest for either team. Bentley hit 8 of 14 shots, one of them on a flailing drive that really got the small home crowd fired up. BENTLEY'S MIXED BAG While certainly a big reason for Atlanta's victory, Bentley was kicking herself after the game for turning it over five times. The Dream had 16 turnovers in all. ''Honestly, I was not happy with my decision-making down the stretch,'' she said. ''I definitely have to do a better job with my assist-to-turnover ratio and shot selection. But my team and my coaching staff put me in great positions to score and be aggressive.'' TIP-INS The Mystics trailed almost the entire opening half, finally claiming their first lead on Delle Donne's pull-up jumper with 2:54 left in the second quarter. Washington went to the break with a lead.... Tiffany Hayes scored 17 points for the Dream, while Williams and Jessica Breland added 10 apiece.... Toliver finished with 16 points but went only 1 of 5 from 3-point range. The Mystics finished 6 of 20 beyond the arc.... Delle Donne was basically a one-woman team on the boards for the Mystics, grabbing more than half of their 26 rebounds. The Dream finished with a commanding rebounding edge, led by Breland (14) and Williams (11). MAKE ROOM IN THE TROPHY CASE Collen picked up another coach of the year award. The WNBA recognized her as its top coach for 2018, adding to the honor she picked up last week from The Associated Press after leading the Dream to a franchise-record 23 wins during the regular season. Collen wasn't the only member of Atlanta's leadership team to be honored Tuesday. First-year general manager Chris Sienko was selected as the WNBA's executive of the year. Collen is the second Dream coach to receive the league's coach of the year award. Marynell Meadors claimed the honor in 2009

Then, one of the league's biggest stars crumpled to the court with what looked like a serious knee injury. Her teammates could hardly bear to look as she writhed in pain. Just like that, the playoffs took a gut-wrenching turn. Alex Bentley came off the bench to score 21 points and the Atlanta Dream evened the series at one game apiece with a victory Tuesday night. But this contest will be remembered for what happened with just over 3 minutes remaining and the Mystics clinging to a lead. Delle Donne stumbled on a drive to the basket and collapsed to the court, clutching her left knee. The entire Mystics team raced to her side at the opposite end of the court, some turning away in dismay when they saw her anguish. She had to be helped to the locker room, unable to put any weight on her knee. Washington coach Mike Thibault said he wasn't sure about the seriousness of the injury, but a pained expression at the postgame news conference revealed his concern. It s an emotional time,'' he said. ''We don't know what Elena's status is going to be. Obviously, she's a huge factor in what we do. Indeed, Delle Donne turned in a dominating performance: 27 points, 14 rebounds, six assists, two blocks and a steal, giving the Mystics a chance to take control of the best-of-five series with their second straight road win. Instead, it's all tied up as the teams head to Washington for Game 3 on Friday night. Delle Donne is hopeful she'll be able to play. ''I'm walking,'' she said in comments provided by Washington's media relations staff. ''The swelling isn't terrible, so I'll go home and see our doctors and see what they say. If it turns out to be serious, the series will be deprived of its two biggest stars. The Dream already was missing its longtime leader, Angel McCoughtry, who went down late in the season with a knee injury and cheered on her teammates from the bench. Dream coach Nicki Collen is expecting Delle Donne to play unless she hears otherwise. ''I wouldn't count her out. She seemed to be walking around just fine after the game,'' Collen said. Tiffany Hayes had 23 points and 11 rebounds and the Dream beat the Mystics on Friday night to take a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five WNBA semifinal series. Brittney Sykes scored 17 points, and Elizabeth Williams had 14 for the Dream. Atlanta is one victory away from the franchise's fourth finals appearance and first since The lead changed 14 times through three quarters but never in the fourth. Sykes's third 3-pointer of the game gave the Dream their largest lead at with 2:38 left. Washington scored the next six points and trailed with 35.7 seconds remaining, but would get no closer. ''This team knows how to win games late,'' Dream coach Nicki Collen said. ''We guard people and we have players that can make plays. We get into tight situations, there's rarely much panic with this group.'' Playing without Delle Donne, who suffered a bone bruise on her left knee in the closing minutes of Tuesday's Game 2 loss at Atlanta, didn't unnerve the Mystics. It did force several lineup changes including a four-guard look as Washington searched for winning combinations. The Dream already went through this adjustment as Delle Donne's absence meant both teams played without its best player. Atlanta closed out the regular season sans All-Star forward Angel McCoughtry, who suffered a knee injury Aug. 7 against Las Vegas. ''It's kind of how the Mystics were today. When somebody goes down you just play a little bit harder and play for each other,'' Williams said. ''We've been fortunate to have the extra time to get used to playing without Angel.'' Delle Donne averaged 29.5 points and 13.5 rebounds in the first two games of the series. Washington's offense labored without its leading scorer and rebounder. The Mystics shot 36 percent from the field and 5 of 23 on 3-point attempts. ''I thought we put up a great fight,'' Mystics coach Mike Thibault said. ''I don't think we played great offensively at all.'' Kristi Toliver, who joined Delle Donne in the 2018 All-Star game, had seven points on 3 of 15 shooting and missed eight of nine 3-point attempts. Her backcourt partner, Natasha Cloud scored three points. Aerial Powers came off the bench to lead Washington with a season-high 18 points. Atlanta entered the final period leading and extended the lead to on Sykes's 3-pointer with 7:15 remaining. With Delle Donne out and the Mystics in experimental mode, Powers played extended minutes at power forward for the first time this season. ''We couldn't completely change our offense because we didn't know if (Elena' was going to play until today,'' said center LaToya Sanders, who had 12 points and six blocked shots. ''We did what we could this morning. We kind of just played on the fly today. It worked in some moments, but you could see how new it was for us in certain moments especially on the defensive end.'' TIP-INS Ariel Atkins scored 17 points for Washington.. Atlanta led at halftime and extended the lead to in the third quarter before Washington rallied with a 12-1 run.... Delle Donne dressed for the game and sat on the bench. She did not walk with a discernible limp, but was deliberate with her gait going to and from the locker room. WHAT'S NEXT Game 4 is set for Sunday in Washington. Tip time remains unsettled depending on the outcome of Friday's Game 3 in the other semifinal series between Seattle and Phoenix. The No. 1 seed Storm entered the weekend with a 2-0 lead.

6 Playoff Notes Game 4 The Washington Mystics defeated the Atlanta Dream to force a decisive Game Five in the WNBA Semifinals series. Washington s 97 points are a new franchise playoff record, topping the 96-point performance against Los Angeles earlier this postseason. Kristi Toliver led all scorers with 22 points on 8-16 (.500) from the field and 4-9 (.444) from 3-point range in her 33 rd career postseason game. Toliver also dished out seven assists, her highest total this series. As a team, Washington shot (.462) from 3-point range, tying a franchise playoff record for 3- point attempts made. Six Mystics, including all five starters, scored in double figures Toliver (22), Ariel Atkins (19), Elena Delle Donne (15), Natasha Cloud (13), ftierra Ruffin-Pratt (11) and LaToya Sanders (10). Welcome Back Forward Elena Delle Donne, who missed Game Four with a bone bruise in her left knee, scored 15 points, including 3-5 (.600) shooting from 3-point range, and grabbed 10 rebounds in the game against the Dream. Delle Donne has recorded a doubledouble in all four playoff games she has appeared in this season. Delle Donne leads all playoffs participants in rebounds per game (12.3) and free throw percentage (100% 19-19). Mystics forward-guard Aerial Powers led the team with 18 points, including 8-8 (1.000) from the free throw line, and a career -playoff-high eight rebounds. Powers 18-point performance came up two points shy of the Mystics record for points scored by a player off the bench in a postseason game. LaToya Sanders blocked six shots, setting a new Mystics postseason record and tying the franchise s all-time record, to go along with 12 points, eight rebounds, and a career-playoff-high four assists. Rookie guard Ariel Atkins set new career playoff highs in points (17), rebounds (8) and minutes (32). Atkins has scored in double digits in three of Washington s four postseason games. In her first start of the postseason, Mystics forward Tianna Hawkins cored seven points and grabbed nine rebounds in 19 minutes of play. Hawkins nine rebounds are a new playoff career high. All-Defensive Team Rookie Ariel Atkins was named to the WNBA All-Defensive Second Team. Atkins finished the regular season ninth in the league in steals (1.34 spg) while starting 24 of the 29 games in which she played during her first season. Game 2 In their loss to the Atlanta Dream, Elena Delle Donne led the Mystics in scoring with 27 points and a playoff-high14 rebounds to go along a playoff-best six assists. Tierra Ruffin-Pratt came off the bench and scored seven points in 14 minutes of action. Double Doubles Elena Delle Donne recorded her third straight double-double of the postseason when she scored 27 points and grabbed 14 rebounds in Game 2 against the Dream. Delle Donne is currently averaging 27 points per game and 13 rebounds during the playoffs. 9/2/18 (AP) Elena Delle Donne wasn't about to let a knee injury sideline her again with the Washington Mystics season at stake. She had 15 points and 10 rebounds in her return from a bone bruise in her left knee and the Mystics forced a decisive Game 5 with a win over the Atlanta Dream in the WNBA semifinal series. Delle Donne started, played 34 minutes, sank 3 of 5 three-point attempts and scored 11 points in the second half after sitting out Friday's loss. She suffered the injury in the final minutes of Atlanta's Game 2 victory. ''I would have killed coach (Mike Thibault) if he didn't let me play full out,'' Delle Donne said. ''He knows. I gave him the look and he knew I was fully ready to go and wanted to be in there as much as I could.'' The 2015 WNBA Most Valuable Player award winner sported a bulky brace on her left knee. She failed to score until less than four minutes remained in the first half, but her presence immediately helped open the floor for teammates. Washington shot 50 percent from the field overall and sank 12 of 26 from beyond the 3-point arc. ''Whether Delly is on crutches, it doesn't matter. If she's on the floor, they have to respect her and honor her,'' Kristi Toliver said. ''That changes everything for everyone.'' Toliver led the Mystics with 22 points as all five starters scored in double figures. Ariel Atkins scored 19 points, Natasha Cloud 13 and LaToya Sanders 10. ''Elena Delle Donne, she kind of sucks you in (defensively),'' Dream guard Renee Montgomery said, ''but they caught fire.'' 20 Mike Thibault was named the head coach/general manager of the Washington Mystics on December 18, Thibault earned his third WNBA Coach of the Year recognition following the 2013 season. The winningest coach in WNBA history with 301 wins, Thibault has led Washington to three consecutive postseason appearances ( ) and in 2017, the team made it past the first round of the playoffs for the first time in 15 years. Prior to joining the Mystics, Thibault was the head coach of the Connecticut Sun where he was twice named WNBA Coach of the Year (2006, 2008) and led the team to eight playoff appearances and two WNBA Finals. He set numerous milestones during his time with the Sun, including becoming the second coach in WNBA history to reach 200 wins, the third-fastest coach in league history to reach 100 wins (doing so in 159 games) and the fourth WNBA head coach to work at least 300 regular season games. From 2003 through 2008, Thibault and the Connecticut Sun won 127 regular season games, tying with the Detroit Shock for the most victories during that six-year span. The Sun were one of two teams to have six consecutive winning seasons. Connecticut posted consecutive 26-8 records in 2005 and 2006, which are still the best regular season results for an Eastern Conference team. Thibault assisted in the blockbuster trade that sent Lindsay Whalen and the No. 2 pick in the 2010 WNBA Draft to Minnesota in exchange for second-year guard Renee Montgomery and the No. 1 pick in 2010, which the team used to select Tina Charles. Under Thibault s tutelage, Charles was named the league s MVP in Thibault joined the professional coaching ranks in 1978 as a scout for the Los Angeles Lakers and was quickly promoted to Director of Scouting and assistant coach in During his tenure with the Lakers, the team won two NBA Championships. From , he served as the Director of Player Personnel and assistant coach for the Chicago Bulls when the organization selected Michael Jordan, Charles Oakley and traded for John Paxson. 2013* (.500) 2014* (.471) 2015* (.529) (.394) 2017* (.529) 2018* (.576) TOTAL (.512) CAREER (.570) *Playoff Appearance Thibault served as the general manager and head coach of the Omaha Racers of the Continental Basketball Association (CBA) where his team captured the league s title in During his tenure with the Racers, the team made eight consecutive playoff appearances, and Thibault was named the 1993 Sportsman of the Year by Omaha broadcasters. He ranks sixth on the CBA all-time coaching victory list (236). Thibault also coached the Calgary 88 s of the World Basketball League (WBL) where he received Coach of the Year honors in Following his time in Omaha, Thibault was a scout for the Seattle Sonics and immediately prior to joining the Sun in 2003, he was an assistant coach with the Milwaukee Bucks for four seasons. Thibault has had an extensive collaboration with USA Basketball. He most recently served as an assistant coach to the women s National Team that won gold during the 2008 Beijing Olympics. He was on the coaching staff of the 2006 National Team that captured bronze during the World Championships, was the head coach of the men s team that won the gold medal at the 1993 FIBA World Championship qualifying tournament and was also at the helm of the men s team that won the silver medal at the 1995 Pan American Games. Mike and his wife Nanci have been staunch supporters of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation since Mike s days with the Omaha Racers. In 2007, the Thibaults were co-chairs of GREAT STRIDES, the primary fundraiser of the CF Foundation s Connecticut Chapter. The Thibaults have carried their support of the local community where they live and play by donating tickets to every Washington Mystics games to community organizations. Mike and Nanci have two children. Eric is an assistant coach with the Mystics while Carly is an assistant coach at the University of Minnesota.
