TSU tips at 2 p.m. } TSU is coming off of a 504 mile trip to Akron, Ohio, the home of Lebron James and Stephen Curry, where the Tigers had its first 20+ point game loss to the Zips } This serves as the ninth meeting between the Tigers of Tennessee State and Memphis. In the all-time series against Memphis, TSU is 0-8. } The Tigers look to improve its road record after amassing a 1-5 record away from Gentry Center. It also served as the first 20+ point game loss for TSU. } A rough shooting night for the Tigers resulted in redshirt junior guard Donte Fitzpatrick- Dorsey registering the only double-digit score of the night with 11 points, adding a teamhigh eight rebounds. }A season-high 19 turnovers allowed Akron to capitalize and score 24 points off of TSU s turnovers. RETURNING HOME } Memphis-native Donte Fitzpatrick-Dorsey is returning home for his first game in the FedEx Forum - a place he d grown up in. } The redshirt junior transfer from Ole Miss has numerous connections to the Memphis Tigers. Head Coach Penny Hardaway coached him as a young AAU player, and Assistant Tony Madlock recruited Fitzpatrick-Dorsey while at Ole Miss. He also grew up playing with guards Tyler Harris and Alex Lomax. }Assistant Coach Jerry Nichols is also a Memphis native, and head coach Penny Collins was born in Memphis, moving to Nashville when he was 11-years-old. CAN I GET YOUR DOUBLE-DIGITS? }Tennessee State has two Tigers averaging double-digits led by Donte Fitzpatrick- Dorsey and his 17.2 points per game. The 6-4 Memphis native has scored double-digits in eight-of-nine games with a season-high 26 points versus Lipscomb., and another close call at Western Kentucky with 25. } s leading scorer in Kamar McKnight averages 13.5 pts per game, dropping a game-and-career high 30 at WKU. NATIONALLY RANKED }The Tigers are ranked top 50 in the nation in two categories: }39 in turnovers forced }42 in steals per game CHANEY READY TO LEAD } TSU s most experienced player is senior point guard Armani Chaney. } The 5 10 Chicago native is one of just four returners in the Ohio Valley Conference who averaged 3.5 assists or more per game last season, and now averages 3.0 per game. } Chaney dished out 111 assists (3.7 per game) a year ago. The Tiger is on pace to do the same, with 30 assists so far this season. } In the game versus NC A&T, the Tigers Chaney dished out a season-high six assists. DOUBLE F, DOUBLE E - CHAFFEE } Stokley Chaffee, Jr., and Oakland, Calif. native, averaged 3.9 rebounds per game in his inaugural season with Tigers, making him the leading rebounder among TSU s returners. The senior is averaging 6.8 through ten games this season. }Chaffee, Jr. has notched double-digit rebounds in two games: }at WKU - 10; vs. Carver - 13 STAYING LOCAL } The roster contains five players from Tennessee - Donte Fitzpatrick Dorsey (Memphis), Tripp Davis (Nashville), Demarcus Mitchell (Memphis), Jy lan Washington (Smyrna) and Jalen Duke (Nashville). ABOUT THE TIGERS } TSU brings back six letterwinners from a year ago including starting point guard Armani Chaney, who averaged 7.8 points, 3.7 assists and 3.1 rebounds per game last season. } Chaney and the leading scorer among TSU s returners, guard Kamar McKnight (8.5 ppg), will form an experienced backcourt for the Tigers. } Collins will work to blend a talented group of newcomers with the returners, including four players who redshirted in ON THE COURT AFTER SITTING OUT } Four players on TSU s roster redshirted last season and are getting a chance to play this season. } TSU s leading scorer, Donte Fitzpatrick-Dorsey, sat out last season after transferring from Ole Miss. } The three others who sat out last year are DaJion Henderson (injury), Dave Morris (redshirt) and Demarcus Mitchell (redshirt). ON THE ROAD } TSU is on its second multi-game road swing of the season with its second of three stops at Memphis. } TSU has gone 1-5 away from the Gentry Center this season with a loss at Lipscomb, loss at CSUN, loss at #10 Kentucky and loss at Western Kentucky, and loss at Akron. }The Tigers claimed its first road win at Coppin State, in Baltimore, Md, breaking a three-game losing streak. } Big Blue had one night at Gentry Dec. 15 before hitting the road for another threegame streak beginning at Akron Dec. 18 and ending just two miles away at Vanderbilt s Memorial Gymnasium Dec. 29. WHY, PENNY? }Head Coach Brian Penny Collins got his name as a kid. Collins, born in Memphis, moved to Nashville as a young pre-teen. In honor of his favorite college and NBA player, Penny Hardaway who played in his hometown, Collins would sport the Magic jersey while on the court. The name stuck, and he would be called Penny throughout his life. }Collins claims both Memphis and Nashville as his hometown, as he was born in one, and raised in the other. DONTE S INFEFRNO } As TSU's leading scorer and fourth ranking scorer in the OVC, the Memphis native has entered his first year on the court and spread the heat. He's averaging 17.2 points per game, draining 32-of-42 free throws and 50-of-104 from the field. } Redshirt junior guard Donte Fitzpatrick-Dorsey earned Ohio Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week on Nov. 12 after putting up 26 points in his TSU debut on Nov. 10 at Lipscomb, and again Dec. 17 by scoring 23 points versus North Carolina A&T, adding a season-high seven boards. SEASONED } The Tigers have seven players with experience on a Division I level. In his first season as head coach of the TSU men s basketball program, Collins introduced one true freshman in Monty Johal, three junior-college transfers and two transfers who are ineligble to compete this season due to NCAA rules. } Nine Tigers have postseason experience as the Tigers have gone to the conference tournament for the last three years, and Ole Miss (Fitzpatrick-Dorsey) and La Tech (Washington) have received invites to the NIT.
