4 PREVIEW The Saint Joseph's men's basketball team will take to the court in with a new look and a youthful roster, which should provide plenty of excitement for Hawk fans. With the departure of a few reserve players, as well as starters Darrin Govens and Garrett Williamson to graduation, head coach Phil Martelli will retool with six returning players and a recruiting class that is one of the Hawks' most anticipated in recent years. The Hawks had a down year in , especially by the standards that Martelli has established for the program. But the coach has turned last year's results into motivation for the upcoming year and the returning Hawks have embraced the task, showing intensity and enthusiasm in the off season workouts. And although three starters return Idris Hilliard, Todd O'Brien and Justin Crosgile Martelli expects strong competition amongst all six returning players and the newcomers. "One of our strengths for this season is that we have been humbled. Another strength is that we have healthy competition at every position. We've also got an infusion of talent which is definitely a plus," said the coach, now in his 16th season. "But that talent will be inexperienced so we have to prevent that from becoming a weakness. And from a basketball point of view, and this is unusual for me to say this, we need dramatically improved guard play." Leading the Hawks' returnees are frontcourt players Hilliard and O'Brien. Hilliard is SJU's top returning scorer with a 10.2 average and will be looked upon to provide leadership to the young group. "Idris, like all of them, needs to be a better player. That's not knocking him. But I know it gnaws away at him that we haven't made the post season. My responsibility is to show him how to express that to his teammates in the proper way," Martelli said. O'Brien, a 6 11 junior, was last year's leading rebounder with 6.3 boards per game in his first season with the Hawks and will be needed to increase those numbers. Todd has a tremendous work ethic and an intense desire to please. He is a wonderful teammate. We need his physical presence on the backboard and in the lane defensively, stated Martelli. Sophomore Carl Baptiste (2.1 ppg) saw action in 30 games and will challenge for time in the frontcourt. Carl has the skill to be a multi dimensional forward in the Atlantic 10. He had flashes as a freshman. The challenge is to slow him down so his abilities can shine. I'm expecting a huge jump from Carl this year, said Martelli. Sophomore guards Crosgile and Carl Jones should be key players with a year of extensive playing time under their belts. Crosgile got a late start to the season because of pre season hand surgery but made his debut in the sixth game. He worked his way into the starting lineup by the beginning of A 10 play and started the final 19 games at point guard, averaging 6.7 points. "Justin clearly demonstrated the importance of the off season. He didn't have a productive pre season and then got hurt. So to me, this Fall is really like first off season to improve. Looking ahead, I am intrigued by how he is going to use those minutes and that experience that he gained last year," said Martelli. The flashier Jones was the team's fourth leading scorer with his 9.6 average and exhibited a knack for scoring from long range. "Carl is another guy who came in thinking that college basketball is easy but after a dramatic impact in the first three games, he got knocked down in the next few. I've clearly seen a more humbled guy in the off season workouts and being humbled is not a bad thing," said the coach. "In my mind, he and Justin have the most room to grow and I put my greatest expectations on both of them to do that. Senior Charoy Bentley (2.3 ppg) will add depth and experience to the backcourt in his final season. "I always count on the seniors, and Charoy and Idris are going to have to come outside of themselves this year. They have a good example from a few years ago when Rob Ferguson did that and led his team to the (2008) NCAA Tournament. Charoy and Idris are going to have to become leaders in order for this to work," said the coach. Saint Joseph s recruiting class was ranked 25th in the nation by MaxPreps. The talented newcomers include the Pennsylvania Player of the Year, C.J. Aiken (6 9, F) and Louisiana products, Langston Galloway (6 3, G) and Patrick Swilling, Jr. (6 4, G), who all helped their teams to state titles. New Jersey standouts Ronald Roberts (6 7, F) and Daryus Quarles (6 6, G/F) round out the athletic group of freshmen who are all expected to contribute immediately. We are upgrading our roster in terms of athletic ability, and that s all well and good, but people can t put too much on them. Aside from their athletic ability, the thing that jumps out to me about this class is that three of them (Aiken, Galloway, Swilling) won state championships, one played for a state title (Roberts) and the fifth (Quarles) would ve won one had he been able to play last year for his high school, said Martelli. "I am much more interested in the fact that their teams achieved success than their individual accolades. And now the goal is to get each of these individuals going in a positive direction immediately so that when they take the floor they're never using their college inexperience as any kind of excuse." Aiken averaged 17 points, 10 rebounds and six blocked shots for state champion Plymouth Whitemarsh while earning All State honors. Martelli said, "C.J. has basketball gifts that are extraordinary. He's a wonderful passer, he's a comfortable long range shooter, and has unreal timing to block shots. C.J. plays almost without emotion he doesn't have any highs and doesn't have any lows. Since he's going to be playing against men he's got to embrace the weight room and put on the right kind of weight. That will be a test for our strength and conditioning staff, and it's a test they must ace." Galloway scored over 26 points for Christian Life Academy (La.) while earning District Player of the Year honors for the second time. A 6 3 guard, he was an All State selection. " Langston is a basketball player who does a lot of things well. He's athletic and long and is a guy who I fully anticipate competing for rotation minutes," said the coach. Swilling, also a football standout at Brother Martin High School, is a fellow Louisiana product and AAU teammate of Galloway's. The son of College Football Hall of Famer Pat Swilling, he averaged 18 points and helped his squad to the state title, while earning MVP honors of the championship. "Patrick does a little bit of everything on the court. I think the biggest characteristic that he brings as a basketball player is that he is a vision passer. He sees the play, makes the play and plays the game easily."

5 PREVIEW Quarles, from Paulsboro High School (N.J.) didn't play his senior season because of transfer rules, but had a stellar junior year at Life Center Academy. He averaged 15 points, seven rebounds and four blocks while receiving All South Jersey second team honors. "Darius is long and lanky and is a sponge in terms of taking in information. He has an air of desperation about chasing greatness, one which is very comparable to what I saw in Delonte West. I don't really have a concern about him not playing in high school last year because he still played basketball and I think the acclimation to college will be quick for him," said Martelli. Roberts was a late addition to the class but comes with just as many accolades. He averaged 19 points and 12 rebounds for St. Peter's Prep, which was ranked sixth in New Jersey, and also garnered All State honors. Martelli stated, "Ron is another unique individual who has lots and lots of basketball skills. He will need to develop a forceful demeanor because he is such a good person. We're looking forward to working with him because there is so much to work with." Also new to the program is transfer Halil Kanecevic, a 2010 CAA All Rookie selection at Hofstra. The sophomore will have three years of eligibility beginning in The 6 8 forward posted 8.6 points and 7.6 rebounds per game with the Pride, while recording double figures 12 times. The athleticism of this group of first year players has been noted by Martelli and he feels they will soon became favorites of the SJU faithful. "They will make athletic plays that will bring people out of their seats," he said. The Hawks' youthful squad will take on a schedule that Martelli called "calm", without the high level tournament that the Hawks had participated in the past two years (EA Sports Maui Invitational and Paradise Jam). The schedule is solid with Minnesota, Penn State, Siena, Villanova and Drexel, as well as the always tough Atlantic 10 slate. Saint Joseph's will be the local team in the Philly Hoops Classic, where it will face Norfolk State at home, Fairfield on the road and Rutgers at The Palestra. The challenge lies ahead for Saint Joseph's in , but Martelli is determined to bring the Hawks back to the level that is most associated with SJU basketball. "The goal here is to not recreate, but to re establish who we are and where we stand in this city and this league," said the coach. "We cannot and will not be an afterthought." Preseason Notes Phil Martelli enters his 16th season at the helm of the SJU program and owns a career record. Saint Joseph s will be the Philadelphia representative in the Philly Hoops Classic. The Hawks will host Norfolk State at Hagan Arena and then will travel to Fairfield before playing Rutgers at The Palestra. This season, the Hawks will face 15 teams which reached the postseason in , including six NCAA Tournament squads and three NIT teams. Freshman Langston Galloway is the nephew of Hawk assistant coach Geoff Arnold. Freshman Patrick Swilling, Jr., is the son of former NFL player Pat Swilling. The elder Swilling was recently an member of the Class of 2010 inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. He played at Georgia Tech in the 1980 s before enjoying a pro career with the New Orleans Saints, Detroit Lions and the Oakland Raiders. Halil Kanecevic joins the SJU program after transferring from Hofstra. 6 PHIL MARTELLI Head Coach Saint Joseph s University Career Record (15 years) * 2004 Consensus National Coach of the Year * Four time Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year (2005, 2004, 2001, 1997) * Head Coach, 2005 USA Basketball Under 21 World Championship Team In 15 seasons as Saint Joseph s University head coach, Phil Martelli has built a program that is consistently one of the top in the conference, a perennial postseason participant and a key player on the national scene, while earning his place among the top coaches in the school s storied history. The season marked his 25th year at Saint Joseph s, including 10 years as an assistant coach. His 15 year career mark stands at , while he ranks fifth in career winning percentage (.625) among SJU coaches. Setting the school record for wins in a season (30) in 2004, Martelli has guided SJU to 20 or more victories six times in 15 seasons. He is in Atlantic 10 play, which is the most conference wins for any active coach in the A 10. Martelli faced a challenge in with a young and inexperienced squad that went 11 20, coming off a season that saw the Hawks go for his ninth consecutive winning season. Among the highlights of was Ahmad Nivins earning AP Honorable Mention All America honors and becoming the third Hawk in the past six years to garner the Atlantic 10 s Player of the Year Award. Nivins was also chosen by the Dallas Mavericks in the 2009 NBA Draft, becoming the third player coached by Martelli to be drafted. The Hawks reached the Atlantic 10 Championship game for the third time in four years and earned the program s 19th bid to the NCAA Tournament, and Martelli s fifth. The 11th seeded Hawks fell to sixth seeded Oklahoma in the NCAA First Round, while ending the year at Martelli reached a significant milestone in , when he surpassed Hall of Famer Jack Ramsay for second place on the school s all time list for wins (236), while guiding a young squad to 18 wins. Martelli has also been at his best when it counts the most as his 17 postseason wins (6 NCAA, 11 NIT) are the most in school history, ahead of Ramsay s 12. Martelli ranks first among Hawk coaches with a.653 postseason winning percentage (17 9) and has taken SJU to the postseason in seven of the last 10 years, and nine times in his 15 seasons. Martelli turned in another top notch coaching performance in , as the Hawks went from a record to win eight consecutive games to reach the Atlantic 10 championship game for the second year in a row. SJU was rewarded with its sixth consecutive postseason bid, but saw the season come to an end in the NIT Second Round, closing with a mark. In , Martelli turned in perhaps a more remarkable coaching job than in when he was the consensus National Coach of the Year. Faced with the loss of two NBA first round draft picks, the Hawks struggled early on, but Martelli guided SJU to 21 wins in the calendar year of 2005 to finish Saint Joseph s posted the conference s best record (14 2), won its fifth straight regularseason title to tie the league record, earned the A 10 s top seed and reached the title game. He was named the Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year for the second straight season and the fourth time in his career. SJU earned its fifth consecutive postseason bid and made an exciting six game run in the NIT, falling on a last second shot in the championship game. In , Martelli guided a focused and unselfish squad that became the most compelling story in college basketball. The Hawks went undefeated in the regular season, reached the pinnacle as the top ranked team in the nation and earned the school s first ever number one seed in the NCAA Tournament, while advancing to the Elite Eight. Jameer Nelson was the consensus National Player of the Year and with teammate Delonte West, were both first round selections in the NBA Draft. SJU opened the season ranked 12th in the polls and moved up throughout the year, taking the top spot on March 8, 2004, for the first time ever, while finishing fifth in the polls, for SJU s highest final ranking since It was a school record fourth straight season, and fifth in Martelli s tenure, that the Hawks were ranked in the AP poll. Martelli joined with Nelson to sweep the national coach and player awards, marking one of the few times in history that the top player and coach were from the same school. In addition to the national awards, he was the Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year for the third time and a repeat winner of the Big 5 Coach of the Year. The SJU squad was the recipient of the prestigious Wanamaker Award in Philadelphia and was named the Team of the Year by the Philadelphia Sportswriters Association. Martelli s commitment to Saint Joseph s is equaled by the University s commitment to him. The coach agreed to a new contract prior to the season and then in September 2004, the University extended the coach s contract through the season. In October 2008, the commitment was taken a step further, when his contract was extended through He served as the head coach of the 2005 USA Under 21 World Championship Team, which earned a fifth place finish at the FIBA U21 World Championship in Argentina. He had previously worked with USA Basketball as an assistant coach for the USA s gold medal winning teams at both the 2001 FIBA World Championship for Young Men and the 1998 Goodwill Games. One of the more colorful coaches in the nation, Martelli s personality, wit and accessibility have always made him a media favorite. His popularity grew to an even higher level in 2004, as the Hawks remained unbeaten and the coach was besieged by media requests from all over the country. Martelli remained as accommodating as ever and the Saint Joseph s story was well documented by the Philadelphia press and told by countless media outlets nationwide. Martelli is not only passionate for coaching, but also for his work in the community. He is one of the leaders of the Philadelphia chapter of Coaches vs. Cancer, as the coaches from the city s six Division I schools strive to raise awareness and funding, and have become one of the top fund raising groups in the country. He s received numerous honors for his community work, and was named the 2004 Citizen of the Year by the March of Dimes, inducted into the CYO Hall of Fame for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, and honored by the National Adoption Center. His alma mater, Widener University, gave him an honorary doctorate in public service in May 2004, while he received an honorary doctorate of humane letters from Cabrini College in May A 1976 graduate of Widener, Martelli began his career on Hawk Hill with SJU's NCAA Tournament team. After 10 years as an assistant at Saint Joseph s, Martelli was named the 14th coach in school history on July 20, 1995, and just the third non alumnus to follow in the storied tradition of SJU coaches. Martelli burst onto the scene in his first season ( ) and took the squad to the NIT championship game. He followed that in with the Atlantic 10 regular season and tournament titles, along with a berth in the NCAA Sweet 16. Prior to his arrival at SJU, Martelli spent seven years as head basketball coach at Bishop Kenrick High School and had a stint as assistant coach at Widener, helping guide the Pioneers to the 1978 NCAA Division III Final Four. As a point guard at Widener, he was part of the NCAA Tournament teams in and , and set the school's single season and career assist marks. Martelli and his wife Judy, a former basketball player with the legendary Immaculata College teams, have three children. Phil, Jr., a 2003 SJU graduate, is an assistant basketball coach at Niagara University, Jimmy is an assistant coach at Robert Morris University, and Elizabeth is a 2009 graduate of Saint Joseph s.
