1 OHSAA FOOTBALL Weekly Release - November 27, 2016 Ohio High School Athletic Association 4080 Roselea Place, Columbus, OH Office Fax Facebook.com/OHSAA Contact: Tim Stried, Director of Communications, tstried@ohsaa.org Welcome to the State Championships! The season began in August with 716 teams suiting up for the 2016 football season. Now 14 teams remain in Week 15 as we have reached the state championships in Ohio Stadium. Thirteen of the 14 finalists have been to the title game at least once in their school s history, while Cuyahoga Heights (Div. VI) is in the state championship game for the first time. State Championship Story Lines and Fun Facts Ohio Stadium is hosting the state championships for the thirdstraight year before the finals go back to Canton and the new Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium (formerly Fawcett Stadium) in 2017 and Note that all seven title games will be in Canton (see later note). When Cleveland St. Ignatius and Cincinnati St. Xavier meet on Friday night, it will mark the first time that the Div. I state championship game hasn t been on a Saturday since 1991 when it was played on Sunday, Dec. 1 at 2 p.m. (St. Ignatius beat Centerville). The Division VI matchup is only state championship game featuring two No. 1 seeds. Three of the title games are rematches from the 2015 state championships (in Div. II, IV and V). Trotwood-Madison (Div. III) is attempting to become the third No. 7 seed to win a state title since the OHSAA expanded the playoff field to eight teams per region in Only one team that was ranked No. 1 in the final Associated Press polls has advanced to the state championship games (Maria Stein Marion Local in Div. VI). Coldwater (Div. V) is attempting to win its fifth-straight championship and 25th-consecutive playoff game, which would be a state record. For the third-straight season, the Midwest Athletic Conference has sent three teams to the state championship games, including Coldwater in Div. V, Marion Local in Div. VI and Minster in Div. VII. Those three schools all won state titles in 2014, marking the first time a conference produced three state champions in the same season. A straight line spanning 19 miles could connect Minster, Marion Local and Coldwater high schools. Those three schools own a combined 16 state football championships. St. Xavier, who face off Friday night, met in the 2001 state championship game in Canton in front of 19,129 fans, which ranks seventh among Div. Three-Part Geography Lesson A straight line could connect Minster, Marion Local and Coldwater high schools and it would span only 19 miles. Those three schools own a combined total of 16 state titles. All three schools have advanced to the state championships, which they also did in 2014 when they made the Midwest Athletic Conference the first league to win three state football titles in the same season. Just five miles separates La Salle and St. Xavier along North Bend Road in Cincinnati. La Salle is in Green Township (Cincinnati s West Side) and St. Xavier is considered Springfield Township (more central part of city). Courtesy Mike Dyer, WCPO-TV Canton Central Catholic and Massillon Perry have different street addresses, but both of their football stadiums sit on 13th Street and are located 1.9 miles apart. Defending State Champions Four defending state champions are back in Ohio Stadium seeking to defend their titles, including Cincinnati La Salle (Div. II), Akron Archbishop Hoban (Div. III), Columbus Bishop Hartley (Div. IV) and Coldwater (Div. V). All seven state champions advanced to the regional finals. Most OHSAA State Championship Game Appearances (Updated Nov. 27, 2016) 1. Playoff Streaks Coldwater owns the longest active streak of qualifying for the playoffs at 20 straight years. In fact, the Cavaliers have been to the state championship game the last seven years. Newark Catholic owns the record with eight straight title game appearances from followed by Cleveland St. Ignatius with six in a row from Until 2012, Columbus St. Francis DeSales had owned the longest active streak at 18-straight years, but the Stallions missed the playoffs that season. After Coldwater, the second-longest active streak is held by Mogadore at 18 straight playoff years. III), Kettering Archbishop Alter (Div. IV) and Maria Stein Marion Local (Div. VI). Only Marion Local has advanced to the state finals. Twenty of the 28 state semifinalists were ranked in the final poll. All four semifinalists in Divisions III and IV were ranked. Thirty four of the 70 teams that appeared in the final Associated Press poll reached the regional finals last weekend. See page 7 of this packet.

3 All 70 teams that appeared in the final AP poll earned a playoff berth. Those 70 teams went in the first round of the playoffs. Of those 58 wins, 55 were home games for the ranked team, while three ranked teams won on the road in the first round, including Trotwood-Madison (Div. III), Columbus Bishop Hartley (Div. IV), Swanton (Div. V) and Fort Recovery (Div. VII). Last year, the only teams to be ranked No. 1 in the final poll and go on to win a state championship were Lakewood St. Edward in Div. I and Coldwater in Div. V. In the Beginning to Seven Divisions When the OHSAA created the football playoffs in 1972, there were three divisions (called Class A, AA and AAA) and only one playoff qualifier per region (12 total playoff qualifiers). Now in its 45th year, the postseason has expanded to seven divisions and 224 total playoff qualifiers. Expansion occurred in 1980 to five divisions and two qualifiers per region, and then again in 1985 to four qualifiers per region. In 1994, a sixth division was added, while in 1999, the number of qualifiers per region increased to eight. The playoffs expanded to seven divisions in OHSAA Football by the Numbers 716 High schools in Ohio that played football in Divisions for the playoffs 72 Schools in Division I 108 Average number of schools in Division II through VII 32 Playoff qualifiers per division 4 Playoff qualifiers per region 224 Total playoff qualifiers 31.3 Percentage of football playing schools that qualify Championship Games in Columbus and Stark County After hosting the OHSAA state championship games in Columbus throughout the 1980s, natural grass was installed in Ohio Stadium in Columbus in 1990 and OSU asked the OHSAA to move its football state championship games to another location. The OHSAA found a home in Stark County, with Canton Fawcett Stadium and Massillon Paul Brown Tiger Stadium sharing the state championship games for 24 years until 2014 when the finals returned to the Shoe. The current contract for the OHSAA football state championship games initially included two years at Ohio Stadium (2014 and 2015), and an additional year was added for 2016 due to the stadium renovations underway in Canton. The OHSAA intends to move the finals back to Stark County for 2017 and 2018 before returning to Columbus in MAC Builds on Success (By Gary Rasberry, Celina Daily Standard) The Midwest Athletic Conference started in 1973, but it wasn t until 1989 that the conference began its run of football dominance of the smaller divisions. From 1989, when Minster won the conference s first state title, to last year when Fort Recovery won its first-ever state title and Coldwater captured its sixth since 2005, the MAC has been regular visitors to the state championships game. In that span, the MAC has been missing from State Championship Weekend only three years (1991, 1993 and 2002). In 2003, Versailles, a five-time state champion before joining in the MAC in 2000, won its first MAC state football title, starting a streak where the MAC has brought home at least one title from either Stark County (Massillon or Canton) or Ohio Stadium every season except the 2009 season. In 2005, the MAC had its first double-championship weekend as Coldwater won the Division IV title in Canton and Delphos St. John s won the Division VI state title a few hours later in Massillon. The MAC had two champions in 2006, 2007, 2012 and In 2014, the MAC made state history in becoming the first conference to win three state football championship titles in the same season Coldwater, Minster and Marion Local swept Divisions V, VI and VII. Since the OHSAA created the seventh division, the MAC has won every state championship in the small-school division. Marion Local won the first two back-to-back in 2013 and 2014 with Fort Recovery winning last season. Minster is back representing the MAC in the Div. VII title game this weekend. The MAC is 65-2 in first round playoff games against non-mac schools since the playoffs expanded to eight qualifiers per region in (The two losses include a Versailles loss to Lima Central Catholic in 2005 and a Delphos St. John s loss to Arlington in 2014.) The MAC is against non-mac schools in OHSAA regional championship games. The MAC is now 36-7 in state semifinal games against non-mac schools. The MAC currently owns 115 various OHSAA state team championships. Final Four Experience Newark Catholic made its state-record 25th appearance in the state semifinals. Newark Catholic also owns state records for most years in the playoffs (35) and most playoff wins (72). The list of top Final Four qualifiers includes: 1. Newark Catholic, 25 T-2. Mogadore, 17 T-2. Steubenville, 17 T-2. Youngstown Cardinal Mooney, Cincinnati Archbishop Moeller, 16 T-6. Cleveland St. Ignatius, 15 T-6. Maria Stein Marion Local, Coldwater, Delphos St. John s, Versailles, 12 T-11. Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary, 11 T-11. Cleveland Benedictine, 11 T-11. Columbus St. Francis DeSales, 11 T-11. Ironton, 11 First Round Results by Seed In the first round of the playoffs, the higher seeds (home teams) went Five No. 8 seeds won at No. 1 seeds, including Avon Lake in Div. II (27-26 at Avon), Akron East in Div. III (50-37 at Marlington), Philo in Div. IV (42-7 at Heath), Garrettsville Garfield in Div. V (31-21 at Canfield South Range) and Columbus Bishop Ready in Div. VI (28-21 at Hannibal River) Regional Quarterfinal Results by Seed: No. 1 seeds: 23-5 (No. 8 seeds: 5-23) No. 2 seeds: 19-9 (No. 7 seeds: 9-19) No. 3 seeds: 21-7 (No. 6 seeds: 7-21) No. 4 seeds: (No. 5 seeds: 11-17) Last year in the first round of the playoffs, the higher seeds (home teams) went and four No. 1 seeds lost. In 2014, the higher seeds teams (home teams) went and none of the No. 1 seeds in Div. II through VII lost in the first round. Eight Make School History Entering the 2016 season, 70 OHSAA member schools had never made the football playoffs. That number shrunk by eight in 2016 as

4 Hilliard Bradley (Div. I), Columbus West (Div. II), Akron East (Div. III), Bellefontaine Ben Logan (Div. IV), Cincinnati Aiken (Div. V), Lakeside Danbury (VIII), McGuffey Upper Scioto Valley (Div. VII) and Cincinnati Hillcrest Academy (Div. VII) all made the playoffs for the first time in their school s history. Last year, another eight schools made the playoffs for the first time, including Toledo Start (Div. I), Dayton Belmont (Div. III), Lewistown Indian Lake (Div. IV), Byesville Meadowbrook (Div. IV), Magnolia Sandy Valley (Div. V), Bidwell River Valley (Div. V), Bethel-Tate (Div. V) and North Jackson Jackson-Milton (Div. VII). The number of first-time playoff participants since 2000 includes eight in 2016, eight in 2015, 10 in 2014, two in 2013, seven in 2012, eight in 2011, six in 2010, 14 in 2009, 12 in 2008, 14 in 2007, 10 in 2006, 12 in 2005, 16 in 2004, 12 in 2003, 21 in 2002, 17 in 2001 and 26 in Since 1999 when the number of regional qualifiers was expanded to 32 teams per division and the first-round game has been played at the higher seed, 209 schools have made their school s first playoff appearance. In those games, the playoff newcomers went (.531) at home, (.129) when playing on the road and 3-10 (.231) when playing at a neutral site. Final Four Newcomers Four schools made their first appearance in the Final Four last weekend, and all four fell. They include Powell Olentangy Liberty (Div. I), Whitehouse Anthony Wayne (Div. II), Perry (Lake County, Div. IV) and Canal Winchester Harvest Prep (Div. VII). State Semifinalists By Seed and Record Only 15 No. 1 seeds advanced to the regional final, and only nine of them won their region. The state semifinalists by regional seed included nine No. 1 seeds, three No. 2 seeds, six No. 3 seeds, four No. 4 seeds, four No. 5 seeds, and two No. 7 seeds (Trotwood-Madison in Div. III and Canal Winchester Harvest Prep in Div. VII). Speaking of Making History... While eight schools made the playoffs for the first time, Newark Catholic has now made the playoffs for a state record 35th time. OHSAA PLAYOFF APPEARANCES 1. Newark Catholic, Cincinnati Archbishop Moeller, Ironton, Mogadore, Steubenville, 29 Regional Semifinals (Nov ), Regional Finals (Nov ) and State Semifinals (Nov ): Neutral sites are selected by the OHSAA. There are many factors that go into determining playoff sites, such as quality of field surface, seating capacity, quality of lighting, size of locker rooms and distance from field, press box size, parking spaces available, and a separate locker room for officials. After all those factors are taken into consideration, it must be confirmed that the site is available and willing to host a playoff game on the date needed. First Round Success Two schools have an amazing success rate in the first round of the playoffs. St. Henry has been in the playoffs 16 times and is 16-0 in first-round playoff games. Cincinnati Colerain is 19-0, although one of its first-round games (1995) was later forfeited. In addition, three schools won their first-round playoff game nine straight years before losing, including Germantown Valley View, Mogadore and Newark Licking Valley. Week 10 Movers Many schools needed to win their final regular-season game to clinch a playoff berth. But several schools needed to win and get some help to vault into the Top 8 in their region after being outside the playoff field last week. The biggest movers were West Liberty-Salem in Div. IV, Region 15, which was 13th in its region last week, and Bay Village Bay in Div. III, Region 10, which was also 13th last week. Elsewhere, Dayton Belmont in Div. III, Region 12, was 11th in its region last week and lost its Week 10 game, but moved up to No. 8 due to forfeitures of another team. Blanchester (Div. V, Region 20), was 11th last week and moved up to eighth in the final ratings. Four other schools were 10th in their region last week and moved up into the playoff field this week, including Parma Heights Holy Name (Div. IV, Region 13), Jeromesville Hillsdale (Div. VI, Region 21), Defiance Tinora (Div. VI, Region 22) and Canal Winchester Harvest Prep (Div. VII, Region 27). Welcome Back Several schools were back in the playoffs this year after being out of the postseason for several years. The logest of which is by Barberton, which was back for the first time since In 2015, several schools made the playoffs after long abbsences, including Burton Berkshire (Div. V, Region 15, last appearance was in 1981), Holland Springfield (Div. II, Region 4, last appearance was in 1994) and Swanton (Div. V, Region 16, last appearance was in 1995). In 2013, Norwalk was back in the playoffs for the first time since winning a state championship in Playoff Format and Schedule Unless otherwise noted, Divisions I, II, IV and VI play at 7:30 p.m. on Fridays during the playoffs, while Divisions III, V and VII play at 7 p.m. on Saturdays. Occasionally, that schedule changes during the first round is due to the host site having to share the stadium with another school (high school or college) or the site not having lights. In rounds two through four, any changes are typically due to a site hosting a playoff double-header. Division II Finalists Continue to Be the New Kids on the Block When the OHSAA expanded the football playoffs to seven divisions in 2013 and made Division I smaller (only the largest 72 schools in the state), one of the resulting effects was that many schools that used to be small Div. I schools were now in Div. II. Since then, many Div. II schools have made their schools deepest playoff runs. That began with Loveland in 2013 and continued with Cincinnati La Salle in 2014 and Both schools not only won their first-ever playoff games those seasons, but went on to win the Div. II state title. That fact was evidenced again in 2015 as the Div. II state semifinalist Massillon Perry made its first appearance in the Final Four. Before the Playoffs Historians have found that in most years since 1895, the media or a specific organization named an Ohio high school football state champion. The Associated Press began its polls in 1947 and the OHSAA created the playoffs in The research of mythical state champions dating back to 1895 has been compiled on the football page at OHSAA.org.

9 Skyview Networks to Provide Satellite Distribution of OHSAA Radio Network Football Championship Broadcasts Satellite provider for Ohio s pro teams to distribute OHSAA football finals from Ohio Stadium Dec. 1-3 COLUMBUS, Ohio Skyview Networks, the radio broadcast satellite provider for Ohio s professional sports teams including the Cavs, Blue Jackets, Reds, Indians, Bengals and Browns, will once again distribute the OHSAA Radio Network broad-casts of the 2016 football state championship games. The football championship broadcasts, which had 41 affiliates last year, return to Ohio Stadium in Columbus December 1, 2 and 3. Skyview Networks is pleased to partner with the OHSAA Radio Network to deliver state championship broadcasts to its affiliates, said Matt Stys, Vice President of Business Development for Skyview Networks. The football state championships in Ohio are a prestigious event and we are proud to add that to our client base, which includes hun-dreds of college and professional teams, many of which are in Ohio. The OHSAA Radio Network continues to grow every year and we look forward to being a part of that growth and service. Specializing in news and sports programming, Skyview Networks was formed in 1995 to provide broadcast services in the form of distribution, automation, and inventory management, as well as content for the radio industry. Com-bining cutting-edge technology, extensive resources and unmatched industry expertise, Skyview Networks is the partner of choice for advertisers, radio stations and sports organizations throughout North America. Skyview Networks is already the satellite provider of the aforementioned professional teams in Ohio along with ABC News Radio and ABC Sports Radio, meaning that most stations in Ohio already have Skyview Networks receivers and can automate the broadcasts. The OHSAA Radio Network, which has been carried by 76 stations across Ohio, West Virginia and Kentucky, was created in 2010 to provide exceptional radio broadcasts of selected OHSAA state tournaments and partner with local affiliates to carry those broadcasts, along with public service announcements and promotional messages. Stations that carry broadcasts receive discounts or waivers for the rights fees they would normally pay to broadcast OHSAA regional and state tournaments. St. Ignatius head coach Chuck Kyle believes his offensive line is the biggest in Wildcat history, with the average Wildcat lineman standing at 6 3, 297 pounds. - Since the OHSAA expanded the playoff field and added the regional quarterfinal round in 1999, Cleveland St. Ignatius is 5-0 in the state semifinals. The Wildcats are overall in the playoffs and boast a 12-1 record when reaching the fourth round of the playoffs. - The St. Ignatius defense, which runs out of a scheme, has recorded five shutouts this season and surrenders just 10.1 points per contest. - St. Ignatius holds a 2-0 edge against Cincinnati St. Xavier in state championship matchups, with the Wildcats earning the 2001 Division I state championship by a final score of 37-6 and also defeating the Bombers in the 1992 Division I state final, St. Xavier holds a edge in the all-time series between the two teams. The Bombers are the second team with five losses to reach a state championship game (Columbus St. Francis DeSales in Div. III in 2001, lost to Steubenville). Only three teams with four losses have won football state championships. One of those was Cleveland St. Ignatius in 2001 over St. Xavier, 37-6, in Canton. (The other two four-loss state champs were Columbus Bishop Watterson in 2002 and Youngstown Cardinal Mooney in 2011.) St. Xavier trailed entering the fourth quarter in its last three playoff games. (Courtesy Adam Baum, Cincinnati Enquirer) The Bombers have two playoff victories in OT (Colerain & Sycamore, respectively). Played in three OT games this season, most of any state final team. Following notes By Mike Dyer, WCPO-TV -St. Xavier is making its first state final appearance since Coach Steve Specht has coached the Bombers since He also won a state title in Specht, a 1986 St. Xavier graduate, is in his career at St. X. -Ohio State coach Urban Meyer coached Specht while at St. Xavier. Meyer was an assistant coach for the Bombers in Specht s senior year. Specht was a running back and defensive back. -St. Xavier senior DB Delan Stallworth is committed to Princeton University. Senior QB Sean Clifford is committed to Penn State. Clifford is an Under Armour All-American. Senior offensive lineman Matt Bockhorst (Clemson commit) is also an Under Armour All-American but he is out for the season with a torn ACL he suffered in July. -St. Xavier has 52 overall team state championships in school history. -St. Xavier junior QB Chase Wolf is the son of CBS college basketball analyst Steve Wolf and the grandson of former Cincinnati Royals (NBA) coach Charley Wolf. -Also, Charley Wolf was on the receiving end of many of quarterback George Ratterman s passes at St. Xavier in the 1940s. St. X had previously been nicknamed the Conquerors, but the bombs thrown to Wolf from Ratterman led to a new nickname, Bombers, for Charley s senior year in
