SCOUTING THE REDHAWKS Southeast heads into this week s action with a record of 23-8 on the year. The Redhawks have been idle since March 7 when they fell to Eastern Illinois by a score of in the semifinals of the 2008 Ohio Valley Conference Tournament in Nashville. Senior forward/ center Missy Whitney currently leads Southeast with 14.3 points, 7.2 rebounds and 1.5 blocks a game. Junior guard/forward Sonya Daugherty is second on the team in scoring (12.2 ppg), assists (1.9 apg) and steals (1.9 spg). The Purple Aces advanced to the semifinals of the tournament before dropping a decision to eventual runner-up Drake. UE has three players scoring double figures, led by senior guard/forward Rebekah Parker s 14.4 points and 3.5 assists per game while ranking second on the team in rebounds with an average of 5.9 boards a game. Junior center Shannon Novosel paces the Purple Aces with an average of 6.1 caroms and 1.2 blocks per contest and in addition to ranking second on the squad at 11 points per game. Tricia Cullop is currently in her eighth season as the Purple Aces head coach and has tallied a career record. Cullop was named the 2008 MVC Coach of the Year this season after leading UE to a piece of its first-ever MVC regular-season title following last year s record. SERIES HISTORY Southeast has posted a 4-2 advantage in the lifetime series with Evansville. Thursday s game will be the first meeting between the two teams in 14 years as the Redhawks captured the last meeting between the two teams with by a score of on Jan. 3, 1994 at the Show Me Center. In games played at Roberts Stadium in Evansville, the Purple Aces have posted a 2-1 mark that include a victory on Nov. 26, Statistically Speaking REDHAWKS VS. Southeast has claimed wins in two of its last four games versus Indiana teams. WHITNEY GARNERS FIRST TEAM ALL-OVC HONORS Senior Missy Whitney captured postseason honors from the Ohio Valley Conference for the second year in a row as she was named First Team All-OVC on March 6. The 6-2 Whitney has ranked among the conference leaders in several categories this season that includes being third in blocked shots and ninth in rebounds. The juniors (Rachel Blunt, Sonya Daugherty, Mathilde Dufour, Crysta Glenn, Tierra Johnson, Tarina Nixon and Szandra Pál) have posted a record with three OVC championships, two OVC tournament titles and NCAA Tournament berths and a first-ever appearance in the WNIT. COMMON GROUND Southeast and Evansville have faced two common opponents this season in OVC members Morehead State and Tennessee Tech. The Redhawks claimed season sweeps over the Eagles and the Golden Eagles, while the Aces posted a victory record against both squads. NATIONALLY KNOWN In this week s NCAA Division I rankings released Monday, Southeast is ranked ninth in nation in turnovers per game (13.5), 34th in scoring defense (56.4 ppg), 39th in win-loss percentage (74.2) and 41st in steals per game (10.4). Last year, the Redhawks posted a 24-8 mark which preceded two 22-win campaigns in 2005 and ` A FIRST FOR T Junior Tarina Nixon accomplished a first in her collegiate career earlier this month when she captured postseason all-conference honors from the JOHN ISHEE OVC as she was named to the All-OVC Second Team on March 6. The Gilbert, Ariz., native is currently fourth in the conference in steals and ninth in free throw percentage. The Redhawks have forced opponents to turn the ball over an average of 14.2 times that translated into 11.4 points per game for them during that stretch. NIXON HOLDS TOP THREE SPOT ON SOUTHEAST S CAREER TREYS LIST... Junior Tarina Nixon closing in on Southeast s career record for threepointers this season. She holds the third-place mark in school history with 122 made threes entering Friday s semifinal game. Nixon is one trey away from tying the second-place mark of 123 trifectas currently held by former Redhawk Natalie Purcell ( ). AND MOVES UP IN THE TOP 10 IN CAREER STEALS Nixon ranks eighth on the school s top 10 all-time list with 143 career thefts. She is four thefts shy from tying seventh-place tally of 147 which is held by Sarita Wesley ( ). STREAKING FROM DOWNTOWN The Redhawks have continued to utilize the three-point shot in their offense this season as they are rated among the NCAA Division I leaders for consecutive threes made in a game. Southeast has hit at least one trey in 309 straight games since the season. The last time the Redhawks were held without a three in a game was Jan. 14, 1998 in a home contest against Tennessee State. Lost 5 WHITNEY EARNS PRESEASON OVC POY ACCOLADES The Ohio Valley Conference honored senior Missy Whitney during the conference s annual Media Day on Oct. 10 when she was named the Preseason OVC Player of the Year. She averaged 13.2 points, 7.8 rebounds and 1.4 blocks per game last season en route to being earning Second Team All-OVC and OVC All-Newcomer honors. REDHAWKS PICKED TO WIN OVC TITLE IN PRESEASON POLL Southeast was been picked to capture the Ohio Valley Conference title in the conference s annual preseason poll on Oct. 10. The poll was compiled by the conference s 11 head coaches and sports information directors with Southeast claiming 199 points and 19 firstplace votes. Last season, the Redhawks were tabbed fifth in the poll before capturing the OVC regular-season and tournament titles for the second consecutive season. INTERNATIONAL FLAVOR Southeast has had players in the past come to campus from various international countries, including New Zealand, Brazil, Australia, Jamaica and Scotland. This year is no different as two current Redhawks hail from Europe which include redshirt junior guard Mathilde Dufour (France) and junior guard Szandra Pál (Hungary).
