2 HEAD COACH KATHY OLIVIER When UNLV was searching for its next women s basketball coach -- a person that could return the proud program to its place among the nation s best -- it didn t have to look far. The school turned to one of its own by hiring former Lady Rebel All-American Kathy Olivier as the eighth full-time head coach in UNLV women s basketball history on April 22, The Lady Rebels immediately showed their renewed enthusiasm for their new coach, and the team was the talk of the conference after an inspiring run to the Mountain West Conference Tournament semifinals as the sevenseed. Olivier s first recruit to the program, Jamie Smith, would 10 months later became the firstever Lady Rebel to be named MWC Freshman of the Year. In the Lady Rebels continued their climb back to prominence under Olivier, and posted several impressive upsets, including road wins at Utah and New Mexico and a home victory over eventual Sweet 16 participant San Diego State. Olivier s best season would come in , as UNLV finished the campaign with a record, an 11-win improvement over the previous year that ranked as the sixthbest in the nation, and the Lady Rebels returned to the postseason for the first time since with a trip to the WNIT. The past three seasons have been the best stretch of her time on the UNLV bench, as the Lady Rebels have averaged 20 wins per season over that stretch, played in back-to-back WNIT Tournaments, and won their first-ever Mountain West regular season championship title thanks to last year s 14-4 mark (19-12 overall). Olivier came to UNLV after serving as head coach at UCLA for 15 years (from May 3, 1993, to March 11, 2008). While head coach of the Bruins she helped produce two Pac-10 Players of the Year, three Pac-10 Freshmen of the Year, a Pac-10 team championship, a Pac- 10 Tournament Championship and a trip to the 1999 Elite Eight. The former Kathy Ricks, Olivier was a standout player at Cal State Fullerton and then at UNLV, where she earned All-America honors while averaging a team-high 16.3 points and 5.7 rebounds in the season. She still ranks on several all-time lists at UNLV, as her career 18.1 ppg average is the second-highest in team history. This is the first-ever meeting between the schools UNLV MAKES FIRST TRIP TO THE CAROLINAS SINCE The Lady Rebels are making not only their first trip to North Carolina, but their first trip anywhere on the East Coast for the first time since December of 2010 with this week s two-game trip to North and South Carolina. The last time UNLV played in North Carolina was a loss at No. 12 North Carolina in Chapel Hill on Dec. 12, Thursday s game marks the first-ever meeting between UNLV and Duke in the sport of women s basketball. This is the second year in a row UNLV has faced an ACC opponent after facing Syracuse in the 2017 Duel In The Desert in. All-time UNLV is 3-6 against teams currently in the ACC. Saturday will see UNLV play in the state of South Carolina for the first time in program history. This will be the first-ever meeting between UNLV and South Carolina State. All-time UNLV is 2-1 against the MEAC. UNLV has played a difficult schedule this season, as its five losses are to teams with a combined 34-6 record (in games played through Dec. 3). Overall, UNLV s opponents this year have a record. The Lady Rebels could be playing the rest of December without two of its top three returning players from a year ago, as leading scorer and rebounder Katie Powell has joined Paris Strawther on the injured list. PLAYERS TO WATCH... The Lady Rebels brought back one of the most experienced lineups in the Mountain West with four returning senior starters, though one of those four, Paris Strawther, will most the majority of the non-conference season with a hand injury. Looking good so far this season for UNLV was preseason All-MW center Katie Powell, who ranks fifth in the league in scoring (16.0 ppg) and sixth in rebounding (7.2 rpg) going into the USC contest. Next on the team in scoring is forward Jordyn Bell, who recently set a new career-high with 17 points and is currently averaging 10.0 points (28th) and 4.8 rebounds per contest. The fourth returning starter for UNLV is guard Nikki Wheatley, who is posting 8.7 points and 4.7 rebounds through the first six games. As a team, UNLV has struggled at the line, connecting on just 63.3% of its attempts. The Lady Rebels are hitting the boards hard, as they typically do, with a +2.5 rebound margin. INJURY UPDATES... Senior center Katie Powell left the first half of the USC game with a high right ankle injury, and was unable to return. UNLV s leading scorer and rebounder, she is currently sidelined until further reevaluation later this month. That puts the top two rebounders from a year ago on the bench, as UNLV has already been playing without senior forward Paris Strawther, who averaged 9.3 points and 6.3 rebounds as a junior. It was already announced she would miss the rest of the non-conference season after being reevaluated for her broken pinky finger on her left hand. The injury happened during shootaround

This is the first-ever meeting between the schools before the Lady Rebels two-point loss at UC Irvine in the second game of the season. She will be checked again following the Christmas break and before the start of Mountain West play. POWELL UP FOR ANOTHER SEASON AWARD... Senior forward Katie Powell is one of 30 players in the nation to be named as a candidate for the Senior CLASS Award, it was announced Nov. 30. The award is given to a Division I senior who shows notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and Competition. Powell is the first Lady Rebel to be a candidate for the award since Constance Jinks in the season. MOVING UP THE CHARTS... Senior guard Nikki Wheatley became the 25th Lady Rebel to score 1,000 career points at UNLV after posting five points against Gonzaga on Nov. 17. At her current career scoring average she would continue to move up the all-time chart. The Lady Rebels will have a lot of new faces on the team next season, as six players have signed national letters of intent to play for the Lady Rebels starting in the fall of , Head Coach Kathy Olivier announced Nov. 14. This is the largest group of signees UNLV has ever inked during the fall signing period, and the largest of Olivier s 11 years at the helm of the Lady Rebels. Comprising the class is Melanie Isbell, Tianna Carter, Keyana Wilfred, Isis Beh, Anna Blount and Jacinta Buckley. The class is also currently ranked 60th in the nation by Blue Star Report and 96th by the All-Star Girls Report.

POWELL NAMED TO LISA LESLIE AWARD WATCH LIST... Senior center Katie Powell is one of 20 players in the nation named to the Lisa Lesie Award Watch List, which is awarded to the top center in women s college basketball. Powell earned her spot on the award after finishing in the top 10 in the Mountain West in both scoring and rebounding a year ago while picking up all-leauge honors. She is one of the top four returning scorers and rebounding in the league for her senior season. CHALLENGING THE BEST... As always, the Lady Rebels will play one of the toughest schedules in the Mountain West, as the Lady Rebels could play a potential 17 contests against teams that reached the postseason a year ago. That includes the first three matchups of the season, against Wright State (WNIT), UC Irvine (WBI) and Gonzaga (NCAA), while the Lady Rebels could meet Middle Tennesse, a WNIT team as well, on the second day of the Lady Rebel Round-Up. December won t get any easy for UNLV, with home games against USC and potentially Utah along with a trip to Cameron Indoor Stadium for the first-ever meeting with Duke, a preseason top-25 squad. WATCHING THE LADY REBELS... UNLV is scheduled to have all 16 of its home games live streamed this season. Fourteen of the games will be on the Mountain West Network, available at UNLVRebels.com. All Mountain West Network programming is also available on Stadium, which can be accessed through WatchStadium. com, Stadium mobile apps and over-the-top connected devices (such as Apple TV, Roku, Sling TV, Amazon Fire and XBox). Returning as play by play for the MW Network streams will be Wyatt Tomchek, while color analyst duties will be shared by Caleb Herring and Curtis Stelzer. FloSports will carry all eight games of December s Duel In The Desert event, hosted by UNLV from Dec That includes UNLV s game against Hawaii (Dec. 19) and the Dec. 21 contest against either Florida or Utah. UNLV ON THE RADIO... All Lady Rebel games will have a live radio broadcast this season, featuring the radio call of Adam Candee (play-by-play) while Wyatt Tomchek will handle selected road contests. Kevaney Martin will also serve as color analyst for select home broadcasts. This year s games can be heard through the UNLV Gameday App, available on the App Store from Apple and Google Play, as well as through a link on UNLVRebels.com. Four games this season will also be carried live by KBAD 920 AM: New Mexico on Jan. 9, Wyoming on Feb. 20, UNR on Feb. 27 and Colorado State on March 7. In addition, UNLV s home contest with Gonzaga on Nov. 17 will be carried by ESPN 1100 AM. UNLV PICKED TO FINISH SECOND IN THE MW... The Lady Rebels were picked to finish second in this year s MW preseason coaches poll, its highest ranking in the preseason poll since entering the season as the league favorite.
