Stetson Lead-off Classic ^ - UH Crowne Plaza Classic % - LSU Purple and Gold Challenge * - Southland Conference game Stetson Lead-Off Classic February 6-8, 2009 Friday, Feb. 6 vs. Bethune Cookman 12:30p.m. vs. Stetson 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 7 vs. Kent State 10:00 a.m. vs. Bethune Cookman 12:30p.m. The Texas State Softball team will open up its 2009 season on the road at the Stetson Lead-Off Classic, being held in DeLand, Fla. from Feb. 6-8, hosted by Stetson University. The Bobcats will play their first game against Bethune Cookman College on Friday, the 6th at 12:30 p.m. CT. Texas State will end the day against home team Stetson at 5:30p.m. This will be the second meeting for the Bobcats and the Wildcats. They last met in 2002, where the Bobcats came away with a 7-3 victory. Friday will mark the first meeting between Texas State and Stetson. Stetson, a member of the Atlantic Sun Conference finished fifth in the conference in On Saturday, the Bobcats will play Kent State in what will be another first for the two teams. Kent State finished first in the Mid Atlantic Conference last year, going 20-2 in the league. The Stetson Lead-Off Classic will be the Bobcats 2009 debut. Texas State is coming off a hot 2008 season, that ended with a lot of unfinished business. Texas State loses its starting pitcher and catcher, which means the fans will see a different face on the mound A Member of The Texas State University System

Six schools received one point apiece. and behind the plate. Returning for the Bobcats is 2008 Southland Conference Hitter of the Year, McKenzie Baack. Baack can see time in the infield and outfield this season. Along with Baack, Texas State has four other SLC Preseason Team members with shortstop Alex Newton, first baseman Leah Boatright, third baseman Ali McCormack and outfielder Kristina Tello. Texas State was picked to finish second in the SLC Coaches and Sports Information (SID) Polls. The Bobcats will play 16 non-conference games before beginning conference play on Feb. 24 at UT Arlington. Fab Five Named Preseason All-SLC Alex Newton, McKenzie Baack and Leah Boatright were named to the All-SLC Preseason First Team. Kristina Tello and Ali McCormack earned a spot on the Second Team, to put Texas State with five players on the All-SLC Team the most by any other school. Texas State Picked 2nd in SLC Preseason Polls Entering the 2009 softball season, the Bobcats were picked to finish second in the Southland Conference Coaches and SID Polls. The Bobcats are the reigning SLC Regular Season Champions. Baack is Back Baack, who was a walk-on last season blasted on to the scene to soon become the teams designated player, starting 47 of 52 games for the Bobcats. She led the team in home runs with eight, 78 total bases, tied for the most RBI with 24 and had the highest batting average with.351. Baack was named the 2008 SLC Hitter of the Year for her accolades. The sophomore power hitter will be back in the line-up for the Bobcats looking to improve from her freshman campaign. Hall Times Two Senior outfielder Taylor Hall will no wbe joined on the team by her little sister Chandler. Chandler is a pitcher, but can play almost every spot on the field, so don t be suprised to see her out in the field when she is not on the mound. The Newbies The Texas State Softball fans will see six new players on the field this season. Chandler Hall, Brittany Johnson, Shekia Knight, Megan Parten, Amye Patrick and Allison Snow will are all first year Bobcats. The Toughest of the Tough Texas State will open up its 2009 season on Feb. 6 on the road at the Stetson Lead-Off Classic. They will return to the Lone Star State to play Texas on Feb. 11 at 5p.m. in Austin. At the UH Crowne Plaza Classic the Bobcats will face Oklahoma on Feb. 13, Indiana on Feb. 13, Oklahoma State and North Carolina State on

3 Feb. 14 and Houston on Feb. 15. The Bobcats will open up home play in the newly renovated Softball Stadium on Feb. 18 when they host Big 12 opponent Texas A&M at 6p.m. Traveling to Louisiana from Feb Texas State will play in the LSU Purple and Gold Challenge facing UAB, Northern Iowa and LSU. Southland Conference play will begin for the Bobcats on Feb. 24 when they travel to Arlington to face UTA. The Bobcats will play Texas for the second time of the season on March 3 at 7p.m. UTEP, New Mexico, Baylor, Texas Tech and North Texas highlight the rest of the non-conference schedule for Texas State. This years SLC Tournament will be held in Lake Charles, La. hosted by McNeese State. The tournament will begin Thursday, May 7th. 4 Head Coach Ricci Woodard Ninth Season Texas State head softball coach Ricci Woodard enters her ninth season with the Bobcat program. Woodard was named the 2008 Southland Conference Coach of the Year after leading her team to a first place showing at the end of the regular season. Under Woodard guidance her student-athletes have appeared in eight straight Southland Conference Tournaments and two NCAA Tournaments. In 2008, the Bobcats recorded a record. They started the conference schedule winning eight straight games, and ended the season winning five of their last six games, going 2 in the SLC. While leading her team to a first place finish, Woodard had eight of her players named to the SLC All-Conference Team to lead all teams. Senior pitcher Ragan Blake was a First Team selection and was named SLC Pitcher of the Year. Newcomer McKenzie Baack was named SLC Hitter of the Year, while joining Ashton Peters, Leah Boatwright, Ali McCormack, Jette Weinheimer and Kristina Tello on the all-conference Second Team. Alex Newton received Third Team honors. Woodard-led teams have compiled an overall record while going in Southland Conference play, in her eight seasons at Texas State. In 2004, Woodard became the all-time wins leader among Texas State softball coaches as she passed Pam Wuestenberg, who guided the first 10 Bobcat softball teams, for the record with her 172nd win. Including this last year s recognition, Woodard has now earned SLC Coach of the Year honors, three times as voted by her peers within the conference. In 2007, Texas State finished overall and in the SLC, including a 3-0 win at No. 18 Texas. The Bobcats also advanced to the final day of the Southland Conference Tournament before falling to tournament champion Sam Houston State. In 2006 the Bobcats finished overall, going 18-5 in conference play to finish in second in the regular season standings. Texas State also defeated #1 ranked Texas before a record crowd of over 1,100 at Bobcat Field. The Longhorns were one of five 2006 opponents for the Bobcats that made the NCAA Tournament Field. As the second seed in the 2006 SLC Tournament, the Bobcats defeated Nicholls State and Northwestern State but fell to Texas-Arlington in a loser s bracket game. Texas State struggled to a overall mark in 2005, the only season Woodard has failed to finish above.500 on the season. However, the Bobcats still showed they were among the Southland s best, going 18-8 in conference play to finish tied for second in the standings. In 2004, Texas State finished 37-20, good enough for second place in the SLC. Woodard guided the Bobcats to a record in Finishing in the SLC, the Bobcats placed second in the regular season race but still earned an NCAA Tournament bid. It marked the second year Woodard s team played in an NCAA regional tournament. The Bobcats went 3-2 in the Austin Regional, falling to eventual Women s College World Series participant Texas in the regional finals after earning wins over Arizona State, Northwestern and Hawaii brought the second straight SLC regular season championship to San Marcos as the Bobcats posted a overall record and went 23-4 in the SLC. The SLC title was the fourth in the program s then-17 year history. The season also marked the second-consecutive year that Woodard was honored as the SLC Coach of the Year. In 2001, Woodard took the helm at Texas State as the program s fourth head coach and immediately had unprecedented success. The `Cats had their best record in program history (54-12), a regular season SLC title, an SLC Tournament title and an appearance in the NCAA Regional Tournament. Texas State advanced to the regional finals before bowing out to eventual 2001 NCAA National Champion Arizona. Prior to coaching her current post with Texas State, Woodard served as an assistant coach at the University of Oregon for four seasons. In her first collegiate coaching experience, Woodard helped the Ducks to three consecutive national top 25 finishes and three consecutive appearances in the NCAA Regional Tournament. Woodard started her coaching career working with high school teams. Prior to becoming a Duck, she worked as head coach at Midland High School. The Bulldogs won a district title for the first time in school history under Woodard s guidance. She successfully started a softball program at Brazosport High School in Freeport before going to Midland and eventually entering college coaching. As a player, Woodard played infield at Central Arizona Junior College, where she served as team captain. She transferred to New Mexico State and graduated with a B.S. in education in Woodard played high school ball at Carlsbad (NM) High School, where her team won three New Mexico High School State Championships during her four years.
