FOX Sports San Diego will have the game live on television with Prime Ticket simulcasting the contest in the Los Angeles and Orange County markets. Ted Leitner will have the call on KGB, XTRA 1360 and FOX Sports IE n In addition to opening a two-game homestand, SDSU is also beginning a stretch where it will play five games in 10 days. Outside of McNeese State, the Aztecs will welcome Eastern Illinois on Monday, which will also air on FOX Sports San Diego/Prime Ticket, and then open Wooden Legacy action in Fullerton on Thanksgiving night vs. Sacramento State. SDSU will then play on Black Friday vs. either Georgia or Cal State Fullerton, and then wrap up tournament action on Sunday, Nov. 26. n The Aztecs return to the familiar surroundings of Viejas Arena coming off a road defeat at Arizona State on Tuesday. SDSU rallied from a 10-point first-half deficit to take a lead at halftime and led by nine points with 19:22 left in regulation. ASU, however, made 20 of its 30 field-goal attempts in the second half and was 10-for-11 from the charity stripe to overcome the deficit and emerge with the win. n San Diego State received a double-double from senior Trey Kell, who put up season- and team-high figures of 16 points and 10 rebounds. The double-double was the second of his career and he became the 14th Aztec (30th occurance) since to put up a stat line of at least 16 points, 10 rebounds and four assists, and the first since Winston Shepard vs. Washington on March 21, n One of the reasons the Aztecs were able to overcome their first-half deficit and take a halftime lead at ASU was the play of junior Max Montana. The forward was 4-for-4 from behind the three-point arc en route to 12 points in the first 20 minutes. The four treys were one off his career high and in his last four games dating to last year, he has made 11 three-pointers (11-for-23; 2.8 3FGM/g). n Senior Malik Pope continued his hot start to his final campaign, posting 14 points, eight rebounds and a game-high three steals vs. the Sun Devils. Pope enters the McNeese State game leading the Aztecs in scoring (17.0), rebounding (7.0) and field-goal percentage (.667; min. 10 FGA), while connecting on 3-of-6 from three-point distance. Since Jan. 28, 2017, which covers his last 16 games, Pope is averaging 13.6 points and 7.1 rebounds, and shooting 48.8 percent from the floor, including 47.4 percent from three. n Junior Devin Watson nearly joined Kell in the double-double club at ASU as he finished with eight points and a game-high nine assists. The San Francisco transfer has scored eight points in each of his first two games at SDSU and the nine assists established a new career high. It marked the first time an Aztec has had at least nine helpers against a Pac-12 opponent (or any major non-conference foe) since Wesley Stokes dished out nine assists against Washington (Dec. 27, 2003). Watson currently has 11 assists and four turnovers (2.75 a/to ratio), and is tied for the team lead with three steals. He is also averaging a team-high 30.0 minutes. n SDSU has faced McNeese State two previous times, once in 1984 in Las Vegas (W, 91-85) and the other time in 2013 inside Viejas Arena (W, 65-36), and defeated the Southland Conference school both times. n San Diego State has partnered with Nike for a fourth consecutive year through its N7 program, and the team will wear turquoise Nike N7 uniforms for its game against McNeese State to celebrate Native American Heritage Month. The color turquoise represents harmony, friendship and fellowship for many Native American communities. SERIES HISTORY VS. MCNEESE STATE n San Diego State leads the all-time series with McNeese State, 2-0. n The teams have not met since a Dec. 21, 2013, matchup at Viejas Arena, that saw the Aztecs come away with a victory. n The first series meeting was much closer than the second as SDSU earned a win at the UNLV Rebel Roundup in Las Vegas. n No Aztec on the current roster has faced the Lake Charles, Louisiana school. NEW TO YOU, BUT NOT TO SDSU n Although new to head coaching at SDSU, Brian Dutcher is no stranger to the university or the program. The 19th-year Aztec coach experienced 386 victories and 10 Mountain West titles while atop Montezuma Mesa in the 18 seasons with Steve Fisher at the wheel. n In those 18 years, Dutcher also helped the Aztecs to 13 postseason tournaments, including eight NCAA appearances and a pair of Sweet 16 berths (2011, 2014). OPTIONS GALORE n The SDSU roster features versatility and it has given Brian Dutcher options when it comes to his starting lineup. Including the exhibition game, Dutcher has used three different lineups in as many outings. The constants have been Trey Kell, Malik Pope, Kameron Rooks and Devin Watson. For the fourth slot, Dutcher has gone with Max Montana (UC San Diego - exhibition), Matt Mitchell (San Diego Christian) and Jeremy Hemsley (at Arizona State). ALL-AROUND PERFORMANCE n Jeremy Hemsley turned in 10 points, six assists and three steals, while committing just one turnover in 22 minutes vs. San Diego Christian. He is the 11th Aztec to have at least that stat line in a game since at least , and the first to do so since Chase Tapley vs. Bryant on Nov. 11, n He is the second Aztec to accomplish the feat while playing less than 30 minutes, joining Chad Nelson, who did it on Jan. 25, 1997, in 25 minutes vs. Hawai i. STAR-STUDDED COMPANY n Matt Mitchell received the starting nod for Brian Dutcher, making him the first true freshman since Jeremy Hemsley to start in their debut. Hemsley was later named Mountain West Freshman of the Year and is a two-time all-conference selection. The guard has 885 points after totaling 869 in 61 games at San Francisco. HIGH-END EXPERIENCE n The Aztecs welcome six new players to the roster, but two come loaded with high-level experience in Devin Watson and Kameron Rooks. The childhood friends from North San Diego County are eligible after transferring from a pair of Bay Area schools (Watson - San Francisco; Rooks - California). n Watson brought 61 career games, including 47 starts, with him to the table, while Rooks saw action in 83 games (20 starts) and played in the NCAA tournament (2016) and the NIT (2017). KEEPIN IT (ALMOST) 100 n San Diego State scored 98 points in the exhibition vs. UC San Diego. The Aztecs scored more than that just once last season (100 vs. Savannah State on Nov. 28). Both were tops in the MW. n According to KenPom.com, SDSU last season ranked eighth nationally in effective field-goal percentaged defnse, ninth in two-point field-goal percentage defense and 20th in blocked shot percentage. n ranks: 2nd in scoring defense, 6th in scoring margin, 8th in field-goal percentage defense. n ranks: 2nd in scoring defense, 7th in field-goal percentage defense, 24th in blocked shots. n ranks: 1st in field-goal percentage defense, 3rd in scoring defense, 10th in blocked shots. n ranks: 8th in field-goal percentage defense, 15th in scoring defense, 34th in blocked shots. STREAKING THROUGH CALIFORNIA n SDSU had won 47 straight games vs. teams from the state of California, a streak that dated to Dec. 2, 2009, before falling at Fresno State, 59-57, on Jan. 3, n The Aztecs are now 63-6 in their last 69 vs. California schools and 51-1 in their last 51 vs. non-league California teams (51-0 in last 51 in games played indoors). n San Diego State has also beaten seven Pac-12 schools during this remarkable run. n The 47-game winning streak vs. California schools was the longest active streak in the country ahead of second-place BYU (22 straight vs. Colorado teams) and Pittsburgh (22 straight vs. Pennsylvania teams). NICE RUN n San Diego State is a member of the California State University system and it had won 22 straight home games against CSU schools dating to the campaign. The streak ended on Feb. 22, 2017, when Fresno State earned a victory. Prior to the defeat, the Aztecs last loss to a Cal State school at home happened back on Jan. 5, 2000, against Cal State Fullerton. n SDSU has also won 21 consecutive non-conference games vs. its fellow CSU institutions. The Aztecs have not suffered a loss since Nov. 27, 2000, at Fresno State (WAC). PRETTY GOOD WHEN LOW ON TIME n The Aztecs have been good at preparing when short on time. 8 BRIAN DUTCHER Head Coach 1st 19th Overall at SDSU Minnesota, 1982 Brian Dutcher, a long-time San Diego State men's basketball assistant coach, is entering his first season as head coach following Steve Fisher's retirement announcement on April 11, Dutcher, who was on Montezuma Mesa for all of Fisher's 18 seasons, held the title of associate head coach/head coach in waiting the previous six years and is the program's 15th head coach. Over the course of his time at San Diego State, Dutcher helped the Aztecs reach the postseason 13 times, including eight trips to the NCAA tournament, win a conference-best 10 Mountain West titles and record 12 seasons of at least 20 victories. Since , Dutcher and SDSU twice advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 (2011, 2014) and NIT semifinal round (2009, 2016), won at least 25 games seven times and captured seven MW championships (five regular season, two tournament). Dutcher arrived at SDSU shortly after Fisher was hired on March 26, In his first year in "America's Finest City," the Aztecs won only five games, but improved upon their win total from the season before. After that, San Diego State posted a record in , before winning the 2002 MW Championship, earning an NCAA tournament bid and finishing with a record. The campaign saw SDSU receive an NIT invitation, which culminated in the program's first Division I postseason victory. After helping attract the first McDonald's All-American to the squad, Dutcher assisted in securing the signatures of future starters and all-league performers Brandon Heath and Marcus Slaughter. The duo started their first two seasons on The Mesa, leading to the season that produced the school's first Mountain West regular-season and tournament title sweep. The Aztecs advanced to the NCAA tournament and ultimately won a then-school-record 24 games. That appearance led to a string of 10 consecutive postseason berths. From the campaign through , San Diego State registered 20 or more wins and went to three straight NITs. In 2009, the Aztecs advanced to the NIT semifinals and broke the previous school record with 26 victories. The run to the NIT semifinals was a springboard to the most successful run in SDSU basketball history. Led by future NBA first-round draft pick and NBA champion Kawhi Leonard, the Aztecs won the MW Championship, advanced to the NCAA tournament and fell four points shy of moving on to the second round before finishing with a 25-9 record. The NCAA experience from the squad proved fruitful in when it returned all five starters, including Leonard, and a freshman named Jamaal Franklin, who would turn out to be a future MW Player of the Year and NBA draft selection. With Dutcher on staff, SDSU won its first 20 games of the year, shared the MW regular-season title and captured the MW tournament crown. The Aztecs moved on to the NCAA tournament as a No. 2 seed and won the program's first Division I NCAA tournament game. San Diego State, which was ranked as high as No. 4 and received first-place votes at one point in the season, advanced to the Sweet 16 and fell to the eventual national champion, finishing with a school-record 34 wins, a mark that still stands today. The Aztecs' also found themselves in the final top-25 polls, ranking sixth in the AP and 11th in the USA Today Coaches Poll. Five months after SDSU's record-setting campaign, the University elevated Dutcher from associate head coach to associate head coach/head coach in waiting. In his first season with his new title, Dutcher and the Aztecs advanced to the NCAA tournament as an at-large team and recorded 26 wins. The next season, SDSU was again an at-large selection to the 2013 NCAA tournament, moved on to the round of 32 for the second time in three years and finished with 23 victories. Another NCAA Sweet 16 run was in the cards in Dutcher's third season as the head coach in waiting. The Aztecs opened the season by winning 21 of their first 22 games, including 20 in a row at one point, and were led by seniors Xavier Thames, who would become an NBA draft pick, and Josh Davis. SDSU won the program's second outright Mountain West regular-season title and later swept through two games in Spokane, Washington, to secure its second Sweet 16 appearance in four seasons. San Diego State compiled 31 wins and finished the season ranked 13th in the AP and 12th in the Coaches after rising to as high as fifth nationally in both polls. The campaign saw the Aztecs spend their fifth straight season in the top 25. In the process of winning 27 games, San Diego State grabbed its second straight MW regular-season crown and earned an atlarge invitation to the NCAA tournament where they defeated St. John's in the round of 64. One season later, the Aztecs found themselves in the NIT after winning the MW by three games with a 16-2 record. Nevertheless, San Diego State won three games and qualified for the NIT national semifinals, eventually logging 28 victories. More recently, San Diego State completed the slate with a record despite experiencing a rash of injuries. The 2016 Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic champions will enter as one of 12 teams to have won at least 19 games in 12 consecutive seasons. Before Dutcher arrived at San Diego State, he served as assistant coach and later associate head coach at Michigan under Fisher. He spent 10 seasons on the Wolverine staff, establishing himself as one of the nation's top assistant coaches. His first year in Ann Arbor was 1989 and resulted in a national title for Michigan as he assisted then-interim head coach Fisher on the bench. The Bloomington, Minn., native led UM's recruiting efforts in when the Wolverines inked Juwan Howard, Ray Jackson, Jimmy King, Jalen Rose and Chris Webber. The "Fab Five" is considered perhaps the best recruiting class in NCAA history. Dutcher helped lead that group to nearly 100 wins, two berths in the NCAA championship game and a regional final over a four-year period. He was also on the Michigan staff for an NIT championship (1997). Dutcher's recruiting prowess, however, was demonstrated by more than just the "Fab Five" haul. Michigan had the nation's top-ranked recruiting class in and in , with a group that included Maurice Taylor and Jerod Ward. The accomplishment marked the first time that a university had the nation's top class in consecutive years, according to recruiting analyst Bob Gibbons. Dutcher was born Oct. 30, 1959, in Alpena, Mich. He attended Jefferson High School in Bloomington, Minn., and went on to earn a bachelor's degree in physical education from Minnesota in While an undergraduate, he worked for his father, then-gopher head coach Jim Dutcher. He then spent one season in the prep ranks at Apple Valley (Minn.) High School before becoming a graduate assistant at Illinois, where he earned his master's degree in physical education and athletic administration. While in Champaign, Dutcher helped Lou Henson lead the Illini to a Big Ten championship, two appearances in the Sweet 16 and one regional final. Dutcher's first full-time coaching job came at South Dakota State, where he spent three seasons helping turn around the Division II program before departing in 1988 for Michigan. His final season in Ann Arbor ended with the Wolverines claiming the first-ever Big Ten Tournament championship.
