Broadcasters are Dan Hoard (play-by-play) and Dave Lapham (analyst). The game will also be broadcast to a national audience on affiliates of Westwood One Sports. Broadcasters are Kevin Harlan (play-by-play), Boomer Esiason (analyst) and Laura Okmin (sideline reporter). Setting the scene: The AFC North champion Bengals will stay inside the AFC North for the first round of the 2015 playoffs, hosting Wild Card qualifier Pittsburgh in a rubber match this week at Paul Brown Stadium. The Bengals won at Pittsburgh on Nov. 1 but lost to the Steelers at home on Dec. 13, when QB Andy Dalton was sidelined after one quarter with a right thumb fracture (throwing hand). Dalton has not played since the injury. He has not been ruled out for a return during the postseason, but first-year pro AJ McCarron has had the reins of the offense since the injury, and head coach Marvin Lewis has said the Bengals will begin this week with McCarron working as No. 1 in practice. Thrust into the Dec. 13 Steelers game with only a backup s scant game-week practice participation, and seeing the first meaningful action of his pro career, McCarron passed for 280 yards and two touchdowns in three quarters, but also threw two interceptions, including a pick-six. McCarron has since made his first three starts, leading the Bengals in two victories and an overtime loss at Denver, the eventual top AFC playoff seed. He has posted a passer rating of over the three starts and has a 97.1 rating for the full season. Only five qualifiers for the 2015 NFL passing title (including Dalton) finished above 100.1, and only eight finished above McCarron has also become the first QB in Bengals history to throw no INTs in his first three starts. The Bengals finished the season at 12-4, tying the franchise s best record in a 16-game season and earning the No. 3 AFC playoff seed. The previous teams to go 12-4 were the 1981 and 1988 season Super Bowl teams. The Steelers won four of their last five to finish 10-6 and claim the second AFC Wild Card spot. The Bengals won the AFC North in 2013, and Pittsburgh won it in 14. It should be one hell of a game, said Bengals Pro Bowl safety Reggie Nelson. The last game (Dec. 13) was a terrible one for us, and this time we want to make it a good one. I think a lot of people are going to enjoy this. It s a great matchup and a great opportunity, said LOT Andrew Whitworth, another Pro Bowler. Some people worry about (division) rematches in the playoffs, but I think sometimes, when you know each other better, that gives you the better opportunity for success. If it were the Jets or the Chiefs, we d have a lot of learning to do during the week. But we know each other and play each other tight. It s a matchup that s more just about execution. The Bengals and Steelers proved chippy rivals in the Dec. 13 game at PBS. A significant skirmish broke out during pregame warmups, and the game itself was more combative than even the AFC North norm. GAME NOTES 1 AFC WILD CARD PLAYOFF SATURDAY, JAN. 9 AT PAUL BROWN STADIUM NEXT WEEK: DIVISIONAL PLAYOFFS, JAN We ll be ready, trust me, said Bengals CB Adam Jones, but we re not looking to get back into that extra mental and physical stuff. We ve talked about that game as a group. We re not going to have the penalties we had in that game. Pittsburgh finished tied for fourth in the NFL in scoring (26.4 points per game), and the Bengals finished second in scoring defense (17.4). Both teams feature strong rushing defenses, often a staple of winning playoff efforts. The Steelers finished fifth, at 91.2, and the Bengals were seventh (92.3). The Bengals had seven takeaways and just two giveaways over the last three games and finished the season at plus-11 (28-17), ranked third in the NFL: It was Cincinnati s best differential and highest ranking since 2005, when the Bengals led the NFL at plus-24. The Steelers ranked 16th in differential this season, at plus-two. But the Steelers were plus-three (6-3) in their two games against the Bengals. The series: The Steelers lead 57-35, including 1-0 in postseason. The division rivals traded road wins this season, Cincinnati winning at Pittsburgh on Nov. 1 and the Steelers returning the favor by at Cincinnati on Dec. 13. The Steelers lead as the road team in the series. The only postseason game in series history was in 2005 season at Paul Brown Stadium, the Steelers winning in a Wild Card round contest. The Bengals have played more games against the Steelers (92) than any other foe. Cleveland is second in that category at 85, and Tennessee (formerly Houston Oilers) is third at 74. Team bests from the series: Bengals MOST POINTS: 42, in a 42-7 win at Riverfront Stadium in LARGEST VICTORY MARGIN: 35, from the 1988 home win. FEWEST POINTS ALLOWED: 3, in a 27-3 win at Riverfront in Steelers MOST POINTS: 49, in a victory at Riverfront Stadium in LARGEST VICTORY MARGIN: 28 (twice), most recently in a 35-7 win in 2011 at Pittsburgh. FEWEST POINTS ALLOWED: 0 (twice), most recently in a 15-0 win at Three Rivers Stadium in The last meetings: Summaries of this season s two Bengals- Steelers meetings are on pages 22 and 25 of this booklet. Bengals vs. Big Ben: Pittsburgh QB Ben Roethlisberger has an 87.4 passer rating in 25 career games against the Bengals (including postseason). His won-lost record is Roethlisberger has totaled 778 passes against Cincinnati, with 499 completions (64.1 percent) for 5803 yards (232.1 yards per game), with 33 TDs and 25 INTs. The Bengals had four interceptions and allowed only one TD pass in their two 2015 regular-season games against the Steelers. Records vs. Steelers: More than 17 years ago, in a victory over Pittsburgh on Oct. 11, 1998 at Cinergy Field, Bengals WR Carl Pickens had a team-record 13 receptions (for 204 yards). He surpassed a mark of 12 that had been set twice (once by James Brooks and once by himself). And since he caught the 13, there have been eight other instances of a Bengal catching 12 in a game. But Pickens 13-catch game still stands alone. Other Bengals records involving the Steelers include:

(Records vs. Steelers, continued) On Oct. 28, 1973, Pittsburgh S Mike Wagner became the first opponent to intercept three passes in a game against the Bengals. Four players have tied that since. On Nov. 10, 1974 at Cincinnati, QB Ken Anderson set the Bengals record for completion percentage (90.91), hitting 20 of 22 aerials against the Steelers. On Oct at Cincinnati, the Bengals set a team record with eight sacks, all on Pittsburgh s Neil O Donnell. That mark has since been tied once. On Oct. 19, 1995, the Bengals allowed the most yards in franchise history (468) without allowing a TD in a 27-9 win vs. Pittsburgh at Three Rivers Stadium. On Oct. 15, 2000, Pittsburgh s Josh Miller tied for the most punts ever against the Bengals with 12. On Dec. 30, 2001 at Cincinnati, Jon Kitna had a Bengals-record 68 pass attempts in an overtime win over the Steelers. Postseason records vs. Steelers: The longest pass completion in Bengals postseason history was a 66-yarder from Carson Palmer to Chris Henry in the 2005 season Wild Card game against Pittsburgh. Palmer and Henry were both injured on the play and did not return to the game. Also: The highest passer rating in a playoff game against the Bengals has been Ben Roethlisberger s (14-for-19 for ) in the 05 season game. The 54-yard pass from Roethlisberger to Cedrick Wilson in the 05 season game is tied for the longest postseason completion against the Bengals. Individually vs. Steelers: Bengals WR A.J. Green had two big days against the Steelers this season, getting 11 catches for 118 yards and a nine-yard TD in the Nov. 1 game at Pittsburgh and six-for-132 with a 66-yard TD in the Dec. 13 game at Cincinnati. Green s totals for the two games were 17-for- 250, with the two TDs. Over his last five games against Pittsburgh, Green has 45 catches for 649 yards and three TDs. That s an average of 9.0 receptions and receiving yards in the five contests. Green was 11-for-224 in the 2014 game at Paul Brown Stadium, and has also had games of eight-for-82 and nine-for-93. Green s TD catch in this year s first game gave the Bengals their only TD in their win. Green s 10-game career totals against the Steelers include 70 receptions for 937 yards (7.0 catches and 93.7 yards per game). His yards-per-catch is at 13.4, and he has scored six TDs. Other Bengals past offensive performances for Cincinnati against Pittsburgh include: QB Andy Dalton: 10 games; 188-for-322 passing (58.4 percent) for 2034 yards (203.4 yards per game), with 12 TDs and 10 INTs (76.5 rating). Dalton threw only five passes in this season s second game, injured in the first quarter with a right thumb fracture. QB AJ McCarron: One game; 22-for-32 passing for 280 yards, with two TDs and two INTs (90.6 rating). McCarron saw the first significant action of his NFL career in this season s Dec. 13 game vs. Pittsburgh, replacing the injured Andy Dalton for the final three quarters. HB Giovani Bernard: Six games; 37 rushes for 147 yards (4.0) with two TDs; 18 receptions for 154 yards (8.6), with two TDs. HB Jeremy Hill: Four games; 53 rushes for 222 yards (4.2); Eight receptions for 47 yards (5.9); Hill had a 23-for-100 rushing game at Pittsburgh last season. HB Cedric Peerman: 10 games; Two rushes for five yards (2.5) with one TD; Peerman scored his first NFL TD on a five-yard run in 2012 game at Cincinnati. HB Rex Burkhead: Three games; One reception for a five-yard TD; Burkhead scored his first career receiving TD in this year s Dec. 13 game vs. Pittsburgh. H-back Ryan Hewitt: Four games; Five receptions for 62 yards (12.4). WR Mohamed Sanu: Seven games; 18 catches for 153 yards (8.5). WR Marvin Jones: Six games; 21 receptions for 221 yards (10.5), with one TD. WR Brandon Tate: 10 games; Four catches for 48 yards (12.0). TE Tyler Eifert: Four games; 12 receptions for 180 yards (15.0), with one TD; Eifert played only nine snaps on Dec. 13 vs. Pittsburgh before being sidelined with a concussion. He missed the next two games due to the injury; Eifert s 61-yard reception against Pittsburgh in 2013 stands as the longest by a Bengals TE since TE Tyler Kroft: Two games; Two receptions for 31 yards (15.5). 2 Jungle a happy home: The Bengals were 6-2 at home this season, and Cincinnati s record in the last 28 regular-season home games is (.804). That includes a club-record 11-game home win streak from the last game of 2012 through the first two of And nobody loves the Paul Brown Stadium home atmosphere more than the defensive line. We like playing in The Jungle, says DT Domata Peko. The crowd is into it, and we love pinning our ears back here and getting after the quarterback. Says DE Wallace Gilberry: A home game is like someone coming into your house. It s controlling your household, and in order to do that, you have to control the tempo of the game, control the tempo of the crowd and just apply major pressure. The atmosphere is amazing. It gives a sense of pride, and we re a prideful group. And from DE Michael Johnson: This place is loud, especially when the other guys are backed up. When a team can t use their normal cadence, it interferes with their communication and their ability to protect the quarterback. It gives us a better jump off the ball. It can really mess teams up in terms of their communication, you can see it on film. If the Steelers win this week, their Divisional round game would be at AFC top seed Denver on Sun., Jan. 17 at 4:40 p.m. The Steelers won at home over Denver on Dec. 20. This season was the first since 2010 in the AFC North Division in which Cincinnati, Pittsburgh and Baltimore all did not finish.500 or better. The final standings: TEAM W-L PCT. DIV. Cincinnati Pittsburgh Baltimore Cleveland Bengals top AFC in scoring defense: Though they barely missed out on leading the NFL in scoring defense, the Bengals did lead the AFC in fewest points allowed, yielding 279 points (an average of 17.4 per game). Seattle gave up only six points in their season-ending win over Arizona to move past Cincinnati for the league lead in scoring defense with a total of 277. Kansas City finished third at 287, followed by Denver (296) and Minnesota (302). The Bengals second-place NFL finish in scoring defense is their best rank ever. Their previous high was fifth, by the 1972 team that allowed 16.4 points per game, and by the 2013 club that allowed The 2013 team led the AFC, THE HEAD COACHES BENGALS NOTES Louisville from Steelers FB Will Johnson is from Dayton, Ohio (Centerville HS)... Bengals DE Will Clarke is from Pittsburgh (Taylor Allerdice HS)... Bengals defensive line coach Jay Hayes and Bengals tight ends coach Jonathan Hayes are brothers who grew up in South Fayette, Pa. Jonathan Hayes played TE for the Steelers from , and Jay Hayes was on the Steelers coaching staff from Bengals assistant head coach/offensive line coach Paul Alexander coached at Penn State from Bengals strength and conditioning coach Chip Morton coached at Penn State from Bengals offensive quality control/assistant offensive line coach Brian Braswell worked with the Steelers prior to the 2010 season as part of the NFL s Bill Walsh Minority Internship coaching program. Marvin Lewis has the most wins of any Bengals coach, and by a wide margin. His 112 total is good for a margin of 48 over Sam Wyche (64). Lewis record is in the regular season and including postseason. Lewis in 2015 has extended his tenure to 13 seasons, also a Bengals record, and in April of 15, he signed a contract extension through 16. He has led the team to the postseason in six of the last seven years, including five straight. The Bengals are one of only four NFL teams to be in the playoffs every year since In total, Lewis has coached seven Bengals playoff teams, another franchise record. Paul Brown is second in the category, with three. Lewis has coached four division champions, including this season, two more than Paul Brown and Sam Wyche. The Bengals have logged four straight seasons of double-digit wins. Pre- Lewis, the record was two. This season has marked the second AFC North championship for the Bengals in the last three years. In 2013, Lewis led an 11-5 season, winning the North by three games over both Baltimore and Pittsburgh. In a 2009 title season in which the Bengals swept all six division games and won the North title, Lewis was the consensus choice as NFL Coach of the Year. Lewis also led Cincinnati to an AFC North title in Lewis ranks second in the NFL in longest current tenure with one team, trailing only Bill Belichick, who is in his 16th straight season with New England. In the category of most seasons as an active NFL head coach with one or more teams, Lewis in 2015 ranks sixth. Lewis was named the ninth head coach in Bengals history on Jan. 14, In 02, he directed the NFL s fifth-ranked defense with Washington, serving as assistant head coach in addition to his role as defensive coordinator. Prior to his year with the Redskins, he was a record-setting defensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens. His six seasons with the Ravens ( ) included a Super Bowl victory following the 00 season. In the 00 season, Lewis Baltimore defense set the NFL record for fewest points allowed in a 16-game campaign (165), and the 00 Ravens are always included in discussions of the best singleseason NFL defenses of all time. Lewis entered the NFL as linebackers coach with Pittsburgh from , guiding the careers of Pro Bowl selections Kevin Greene, Chad Brown, Levon Kirkland and Greg Lloyd. Born Sept. 23, 1958, in McDonald, Pa., near Pittsburgh, Lewis played linebacker at Idaho State and earned All-Big Sky Conference honors in each of his three seasons ( 78-80). He began his coaching career as an assistant at Idaho State University in Mike Tomlin is in his eighth season as Steelers head coach. His record is 96-56, including 5-4 in postseason. In 2010, Tomlin s Steelers won the AFC North championship and reached the second Super Bowl of his tenure. The Steelers lost that Super Bowl to Green Bay, but they defeated Arizona under Tomlin in Super Bowl XLIII, after the 2008 season. In that game, Tomlin became the youngest head coach (36 years, 323 days) to win a Super Bowl. He is the only head coach in Steelers history to win a division title in each of his first two seasons. In 2006, Tomlin was defensive coordinator for the Minnesota Vikings, directing a unit that ranked eighth in the NFL in fewest yards allowed and first in fewest rushing yards. He spent the previous five seasons ( ) as defensive backs coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. His secondary recorded four interceptions in Tampa Bay s victory over Oakland in Super Bowl XXXVII. Tomlin has a Cincinnati connection, having coached DBs for the University of Cincinnati in A native of Hampton, Va., he played WR at William & Mary from and caught a school-record 20 TD passes. Lewis vs. Steelers: Steelers lead, Lewis vs. Tomlin: Tomlin leads, Tomlin vs. Bengals: Tomlin leads, meaning the Bengals have led the conference in scoring defense in two of the last three seasons. The 279 points allowed by the 2015 Bengals is the team s best mark in franchise history for a 16-game season. The previous best was 284 points in Scoring averages are not solely the products of the offense or defense. Cincinnati s offense and special teams have done a middling job of limiting opponent scores, with three TDs allowed by the offense (two fumble returns and one INT return) and none by the special teams. But the credit and primary responsibility for limiting points of course rests with the defense. My job is to limit points, period, says defensive coordinator Paul Guenther. That s what I get paid to do. It ain t holding them to 200 yards on offense and have three plays be touchdowns. Regardless where we get the ball and that is a point I make to the players if we turn it over (on offense) and the ball s on the 10-yard line let s go play defense, hold them to three. If they get an interception return down to the 20, they re in field goal range, hold them to three. I m paid to keep them off the scoreboard. Peko at 101 and counting: Bengals DT Domata Peko made his 101st consecutive start (all with the Bengals, includes postseason) in last week s Baltimore game. The 10th-year Cincinnati vet s streak began with Cincinnati s Wild Card playoff contest in the 2009 season. He had missed the last five regular-season games of 09 due to a knee injury. Peko s 101 is the current roster s longest streak for consecutive Bengals starts, and his 101 straight Bengals games played also tops the roster. He also tops the roster in 3

(Peko at 101 and counting, continued) consecutive NFL games and starts, also both at 101. Peko enters the Steelers game with 150 total Bengals games and 145 starts. OT Andrew Whitworth has the most total Bengals games (157) and Bengals starts (153) on the roster. The player with the most total NFL games (171) and starts (158) is LB A.J. Hawk. All streaks and totals noted above include regular-season and postseason. Dunlap nabs NFL s Bengals sacks mark: With 3.0 sacks on Dec. 28 at Denver, Bengals DE Carlos Dunlap raised his season total to 13.5, which the NFL recognizes officially as the most in Bengals history. Sacks have been an official NFL stat only since 1982, and the highest previous total for a Bengal over that span was 13.0, by DE Eddie Edwards in Dunlap did not have a sack last week vs. Baltimore. But the Bengals date the club s own sacks records to a starting point of 1976, and the Cincinnati record that the club recognizes is 22.0, by DE Coy Bacon in 76. Dunlap s total is now second in Bengals annals. It s a career-high, topping the 9.5 he logged as a rookie in Dunlap now has 49.0 career sacks, fourth-most in Bengals history. Earlier this season, Dunlap moved ahead of DE Justin Smith (43.5) into fourth. Cincinnati s all-time leader is Edwards, who had 83.5 sacks in 12 seasons ( ). LB Reggie Williams had 62.5 in 14 seasons and DE Ross Browner had 59.0 in nine seasons. Dunlap posts Bengals best sack ranking: DE Carlos Dunlap s career-high 13.5 sacks ranked fourth in the NFL and third in the AFC. J.J. Watt of Houston led the league with 17.5, followed by Oakland s Khalil Mack (15.0) and Detroit s Ziggy Ansah (14.5). Dunlap s fourth-place NFL rank is the best-ever by a Bengal. The previous high was tied for sixth by DT Geno Atkins (12.5) in The previous best Bengals AFC finish was fourth by Atkins in 12. The Carlos roundup: In addition to leading the 2015 Bengals in sacks, DE Carlos Dunlap led the team in total QB hits (31) and blocked kicks (two, both field goals), and he ranked second in total tackles-for-loss (16). He also led the D-line in tackles (55). Dunlap ranked second in forced fumbles (two) and had one fumble recovery. His career totals of 12 forced fumbles and eight fumble recoveries are NFL highs for players on the current roster. He was one of only two NFL players to block two field goals this season. DE Quinton Dial of San Francisco also had two. Dunlap s emergence as a Bengals key player and leader has been gradual but steady. The former Florida Gator had barely turned 21 years old when Cincinnati drafted him in the second round in Asked recently to compare the Dunlap of 2015 with the Dunlap of 2010, head coach Marvin Lewis said: He does what we want to see much more often. He s matured as a man and as a player. He tries to do things the right way, and that s been key for him. Nelson shares league INTs lead: Bengals S Reggie Nelson tied with Kansas City rookie CB Marcus Peters for the NFL lead in interceptions this season with eight. Though he did not pick off a pass over the final three regular-season games, Nelson did have an INT in five straight games (Games 9-13), tying the longest such streak in Bengals history. Nelson s eight picks were two short of CB Deltha O Neal s Bengals record for INTs in a season (10 in 2005). Nelson tied David Fulcher s club record for INTs by a safety (eight in 1989). Nelson specializes in swooping into medium and long-range opponent pass patterns, arriving about the same time as the ball. He had a good chance for a ninth INT against Baltimore last week, midway through the fourth quarter, but he was not his usual sure-handed self. I just flat-out dropped that one, he said. But we won the game, so it s not too big a deal. The Bengals have never had an outright winner of the league INTs title for a season. The only previous Bengal with a piece of the league title was O Neal, whose 10 in 2005 tied Ty Law of the Jets for the top spot. The Bengals claim one outright AFC interceptions crown, that coming with CB Ken Riley s nine picks in Riley was second in the NFL, behind Monte Jackson of the L.A. Rams (10). Riley also tied for the AFC lead in 1982 (five) and 1983 (eight), and O Neal s 10 in 2005 also tied for the AFC lead. Nelson has 30 career INTs, and 23 of those have come as a Bengal. He started the season tied for ninth place in all-time Bengals INTs, but now he s alone in sixth place, just one behind current teammate Leon Hall (fifth-all-time at 24, including two picks this season). Nelson has 115 return yards this season 4 and 333 for his Bengals career. He has one Bengals INT for a TD, a 75-yarder at Seattle in Riley is the Bengals all-time INTs leader by a prohibitive margin. He had 65 over his 15-year career ( ), nearly twice as many as CB Louis Breeden ( ), who had 33. Atkins shares league lead in interior-line sacks: Bengals DT Geno Atkins sacked QB Ryan Mallett in the first quarter of last week s win over Baltimore, giving him 11.0 sacks for the season. That led AFC interior linemen in sacks in 2015, and it tied St. Louis DT Aaron Donald and Carolina DT Kawann Short for the top mark by an NFL interior lineman. Atkins had trailed Donald and Short by one entering Week 17, but neither Donald nor Short had a sack last week. This marks the third time in Atkins six pro seasons that he has either led the league or shared the lead in interior linemen sacks. And one of Atkins six seasons, the 2013 campaign, was significantly cut short by injury. Though the Bengals have never had an overall sacks season leader in conference or league, Atkins led NFL interior linemen by a wide margin with his 12.5 sacks in 2012, and he tied for the league s interior line lead in 2011, when he had 7.5. Atkins finished second overall on the Bengals in sacks this season, trailing only DE Carlos Dunlap (13.5). Atkins led the 2015 Bengals in total tackles for loss (17), a stat that includes rushing plays, and he also ranked second on the team in total QB hits (19). I think Geno has also been playing the run exceptionally well, says head coach Marvin Lewis. I think that always gets a little underrated in Geno s case. I thought he had an excellent year last year playing the run, and this year he came back much stronger in his lower body, and you see that in his play. If they try to single-block him in the running game, we know the ball is coming back to us. Only teammates with 10: The Bengals are one of two teams in the NFL this season with two players at 10.0 or above in sacks. DE Carlos Dunlap has 13.5 and DT Geno Atkins has Among teams that have one player at 10.0 or above, the closest total for a second player is 8.5. Prior to this season, the Bengals had two players in double digits in sacks only once in 23 seasons. That season was 2012, when Atkins had 12.5 and DE Michael Johnson had The last time before 2012 was 1981, when LB Reggie Williams had 11.0 and DE Eddie Edwards had Burfict ready for the real thing: Put a check mark next to one Bengals development that was in the Hoped For category as the 2015 season began. It s a development others in the NFL have no doubt noted. LB Vontaze Burfict is full go for the playoffs. Training camp opened with Burfict still in heavy rehab from a 2014 knee injury. Unable to practice in preseason, he was placed on the Reserve/PUP list to start the regular season, shelved for a minimum six games. But the 2013 season Pro Bowler has come back right according to schedule. He was cleared to resume practice at about the same time the six-game PUP waiting period was over, and he made his season debut in Game 7, Nov. 1 at Pittsburgh. He had solo tackles on each of Pittsburgh s first two snaps. He has since played in every game, and despite the six missed ones, he finished the season ranked third on the team in tackles (74). He led the team in tackles per game played (7.4). He also had a sack, two interceptions and five total passes defensed (tied for the team s front-seven lead). His snap counts increased as the season went on, and he was a particularly major player in the team s last two wins, Dec. 20 at San Francisco and Jan. 3 vs. Baltimore. It s a huge impact on our defense to have Vontaze back, says head coach Marvin Lewis. He has great innate knowledge of the game, and he brings a huge measure of physicality. He impacts the team both physically and mentally. Burfict led the team vs. Baltimore with a personal season-high of 12 tackles, and he showed his athleticism with a diving interception at the Baltimore 33 early in the third quarter. It set up a short drive for a TD that put Cincinnati ahead to stay at In the Bengals win at San Francisco on Dec. 20, Burfict was a key performer as Cincinnati rose from a 7-0 lead late in the second quarter to a commanding 21-0 lead at halftime. His 10-yard sack of Blaine Gabbert put San Francisco in a third-and-18 hole from its 12-yard line with just over four minutes to play, and the Bengals took over at the San Francisco 36 after a short punt. Cincinnati scored in five plays, taking a 14-0 lead with 1:17 remaining in the half. And on San Francisco s second play of its next possession, Burfict flagged down a bobbled reception attempt by TE Vance McDonald at the 49ers 36, returning 16 yards to the 20. On the next play, the Bengals struck for a 20-yard TD pass from AJ McCarron to TE Tyler Kroft, taking a 21-0 lead at the 0:53 mark.

(Burfict ready for the real thing, continued) Burfict led the team in tackles in four games. His 11 solo tackles on Dec. 13 vs. Pittsburgh marked the top solos total in a game by any Bengal this season. Burfict was the Bengals tackling leader by a wide margin in both 2012 and 13. Last season he played in only five games. Tez is that bruiser; that attitude you need, says S George Iloka. We have a lot of personalities, but we need a guy like him. I m so happy to have him back. Burfict s rehab was long and difficult due to the nature of his injury (microfracture). Rehab periods often extend to a full year, and Burfict went 372 days between last year s Baltimore game and the 2015 Pittsburgh contest. I always stayed praying, Burfict said of his rehab period. There were some hard days when I didn t feel like doing rehab, but Marvin (Lewis) made sure he called me and made sure I got into the stadium. Teammates kept pushing me. They knew when I was out of it. I ve been pushed by teammates, coaches, Mr. (Mike) Brown... and I thank them for it. McCarron shows he s still a winner: AJ McCarron was one of the biggest QB winners in college football history at Alabama, leading two national championship teams while posting a 36-4 record, and he has shown many of the same winning qualities in his three games as a Bengals starter, replacing the injured Andy Dalton. McCarron is 2-1 in the starter s role, with wins Dec. 20 at San Francisco and last week vs. Baltimore, and his only loss came in overtime on the road against a Denver team with the NFL s top yardage defense. McCarron posted a fine passer rating in the Baltimore game, on 17-of-27 for 160 yards, with two TDs and no INTs, and in so doing he became the first QB in Bengals history to not throw an INT in his first three starts. McCarron enters the playoffs with a 97.1 rating. Marvin Lewis stopped short of naming McCarron the starter during the head coach s Monday news conference, but Lewis said the Bengals would begin the week with McCarron working as No. 1 in practice. It s too bad what has happened with Andy and we obviously want him back, said LOT Andrew Whitworth, but we believe in AJ and we believe we can win with AJ. McCarron threw a pair of interceptions (and also two TD passes) when thrust into action due to Dalton s injury on Dec. 13 vs. Pittsburgh, but he had four TD passes and no INTs in his three starts. He became the first Bengals QB to play INT-free in his first three starts. Asked about avoiding the picks monster, he said: Well, it s big because we ve had a chance to win every game. If the other quarterback turns the ball over and you don t, it puts your team in a situation to win the game. Turnovers are a big key to success in this league, and really at any level. We ve taken care of the ball, and I m proud of the guys for that. McCarron s first TD pass vs. Baltimore was a 22-yarder that showed excellent timing and accuracy. He put the ball right in the hands of TE Tyler Eifert after Eifert had cut inside across the goal line, threading a needle among three Ravens defenders in the area. McCarron a stand-up guy in a loss: QB AJ McCarron started impressively on Dec. 28 against Denver s top-ranked NFL defense, leading TD drives of 15 plays for 80 yards and 13 plays for 90 yards on Cincinnati s first two possessions, and the Bengals were in position to win in overtime. Trailing after Denver opened with a first-possession field goal, the Bengals took over at their 33, needing a TD to win the game or a field goal to extend the overtime. But the possession lasted only two plays. On second-and-10, after an incompletion on which he had faced stiff pressure, McCarron failed to handle an accurate shotgun snap from C Russell Bodine. The Broncos recovered his fumble to salt away the win. McCarron was forthright regarding his role in the loss, a quality which no doubt raised further the respect he already had earned in the locker room. It was my fault there at the end, and I told the team that, McCarron said. I was looking upfield to see the coverage and the snap caught me by surprise. I let the team down there. But that s football. Now we move on, and you never know what happens next week. McCarron is a first-year pro, a fifth-round Bengals draft choice in 2014 who did not play as a rookie, due in part to continuing rehab of a shoulder injury he suffered in college. McCarron had a good preseason, posting a 92.7 passer rating, and it was evident even before the regular season began that he had won the respect of his teammates. McCarron s got the it factor, said CB Adam Jones, a plain talker not inclined to offer less than sincere praise. The kid s a winner. You can tell he s 5 been working on his ball strength from last year and this year. You can never underestimate the it factor regardless of what anybody says. It s the difference between winning some games and being champion. That s my opinion. Head coach Marvin Lewis preseason take on McCarron was this: We ve got a guy who has a lot of moxie, and has a lot of experience on the biggest stage in college. He s shown me a lot of poise, and I m very pleased about that. In the preseason games, we were working on what AJ s strengths are, so that if anything would happen to Andy, we would be prepared offensively to shift and go to that mode. AJ has the personality somewhat of a linebacker. He can lead guys and he gets excited. That s part of what made him such a successful player. Asked why he feels he can lead this team in Dalton s absence, McCarron replied: If you don t believe that, you re doomed. I ve always believed in myself when I step inside those white lines. You need to carry that confidence as a quarterback, because it s a nasty and dirty game. If you lose confidence, it can go bad for you real quick. I ve always believed when I step inside those white lines that I m the best one out there. That s the confidence you have to take into every game. Not quite on record scoring differential: Baltimore s touchdown with 1:47 to play last week didn t cost the Bengals the game they won instead of 24-9 but it did cost the team the chance to post a record average scoring differential for the season. The Bengals outscored their opponents , an average of 8.75 points per game. The record in that category is 8.93 points per game, by a 1976 team that outscored foes over a 14-game schedule. Without the late TD by Baltimore, the Bengals would have finished the season with a 9.19 scoring differential. The average game score for the Bengals on the season was 26.2-to The Cincinnati defense s 279 points allowed was the franchise s fewest for a 16-game season. The previous low yield for a 16-game season was 284, in Cincinnati s average-per-game yield of 17.4 ranks fifth in franchise history, behind four teams from the era of 14-game seasons. The offense s 419 points ranked sixth in franchise history. The club record is 448, by the 1988 Super Bowl team. The team s 26.2 per-game average also is sixth in team history (including seasons of less than 16 games). Eifert returns, and keeps scoring: After playing only nine snaps over the previous four games, due to a stinger and later a concussion, TE Tyler Eifert returned to Bengals action in the win over Baltimore. He led the team in receiving yards (51), and among his four catches was a 22-yard TD that gave Cincinnati its first lead, 7-6 in the second quarter. I knew he was going to end up being there, QB AJ McCarron said of the end zone spot where ball met receiver. There are certain guys where you know the feel they have for the game, and how they play, and Tyler is just one of those guys. He makes it very easy to establish chemistry and rhythm between quarterback and receiver. He s an unbelievable player for us, a great target. It was Eifert s 13th TD of the season, most by a Bengal since 2001, when HB Corey Dillon had 13. The last Bengal with more than 13 was WR Carl Pickens, whose 1995 total of 17 is the franchise record. Eifert s missed time may have cost him a chance to challenge Pickens mark, and the hiatus quite likely cost him the NFL season lead in TDs. He finished just one short of the leagueleading 14 total that was shared by four players. Two other players joined Eifert at 13. But we re not about stats and Tyler s not about stats, says offensive coordinator Hue Jackson. The important thing is how he can help us going forward, and everybody knows he can help us a lot. The Bengals have never had a player lead the NFL in touchdowns for a full season. Only one Bengal, WR Carl Pickens with 17 in 1995, has been the sole leader in the AFC. Two Bengals FB Pete Johnson with 14 in 1983 and FB Ickey Woods with 15 in 88 have tied for the AFC touchdowns lead. Prior to his injury troubles, Eifert had already far surpassed the the Bengals TE mark for touchdowns in a season. That mark entering 2015 had been nine, shared by Rodney Holman (1989) and Bob Trumpy ( 69). Eifert had three TDs on Nov. 5 vs. Cleveland, tying one of the Bengals oldest records, TDs by a TE in a game. Prior to the Cleveland game, the only TE with three in a game was Trumpy, who had three at Houston on Nov. 9, Eifert had 52 receptions and 615 receiving yards on the season, ranking third on the team in both categories. Arguably, Tyler s the best tight end I ve ever been around, says Jackson. He s tough as nails. He blocks better than people think, and of course he can catch the ball with anybody. He has great hands, great moves and speed for his size (6-5, 250). The sky truly is the limit for this guy.

(Eifert returns and keeps scoring, continued) T.J. Houshmandzadeh, who played 11 years in the NFL and caught 70 or more passes in six seasons, including a Bengals-record 112 in 2007, also had unusually high praise for Eifert after working with the Bengals as an intern assistant coach this past spring. Every time I see that guy run a route, I can t believe it, Houshmandzadeh said. I can t believe that man. He s too big to be moving like that. That s crazy. Eifert had a good 2013 rookie season, working with veteran TE Jermaine Gresham in a two-te base offense. He caught 39 passes for 445 yards and two TDs. But he played only eight snaps last season. On the third of his three catches for 37 yards in the season opener at Baltimore, he suffered an elbow injury that would put him out for the remainder of the season. QB Andy Dalton says Eifert is always a target against smaller defenders who aren t that much faster than No. 85. He s a big matchup mismatch for us, QB Andy Dalton said. The more that he can do, the better we are. Postseason is standard equipment: Bengals QB Andy Dalton has joined Baltimore s Joe Flacco as the NFL s only starting QBs in the Super Bowl era to lead a team to postseason in each of his first five campaigns. Flacco did it with Baltimore from , and Dalton has done it from 2011 through this season. Flacco s streak was snapped when the Ravens missed the playoffs in If Dalton leads the Bengals to the playoffs again in 2016, he ll have set a new benchmark in this category. Dalton claims AFC passing title: Bengals QB Andy Dalton ranked first in the AFC and second in the NFL in passing this season. Dalton, who missed the final three games due to a thumb fracture, posted a rating which was topped by only the mark of Seattle s Russell Wilson. Arizona s Carson Palmer ranked third in the NFL at 104.6, followed by New England s Tom Brady at and Washington s Kirk Cousins at Dalton is the first Bengals QB to lead the AFC in passer rating since Boomer Esiason with a 92.1 mark in Esiason also led the AFC in Ken Anderson led the AFC four times (1974, 75, 81 and 82). Bengals QBs have led the NFL in passing five times four by Ken Anderson and most recently by Esiason in 88. Dalton was in the NFL s top five every week since the conclusion of Week 3 play. He had two weeks at No. 1, four weeks at No. 2 and six weeks at No. 3. He was the NFL leader through Week 7 as well as through Week 13. Dalton s season numbers were 255-for-386 (66.1 percent) for 3250 yards (250.0 per game), with 25 TDs and seven INTs. He ranked second in average gain per attempt (8.42). He tied for third in percentage of passes for TDs (6.5), eighth in completion percentage (66.1) and eighth in lowest INT percentage (1.8). Dalton in, Palmer out: Bengals QB Andy Dalton s season passer rating is a Bengals record, eclipsing by more than five points the previous mark of set by Carson Palmer in Dalton missed the last three regular-season games due to a thumb fracture suffered in Game 13, but he had far more than enough attempts (386) on the season to remain qualified for the record. The Bengals use the same standard employed by the NFL for season passer rankings, a minimum of 224 attempts, an average of 14.0 over 16 games. Dalton ranked first in the AFC and second in the NFL in season rating. Russell Wilson of Seattle led the NFL at Tom Brady of New England was second in the AFC at Dalton had eight among his 13 played with a triple-digit rating, topping his previous career high of six in a season. The Bengals record for 100-plus ratings in a full season is 11, by Palmer in 05. Dalton claims a road wins mark: Bengals QB Andy Dalton didn t play in the last three games, two of those on the road, but he already has won 24 road games in his five-year career. Cincinnati s Dec. 6 win at Cleveland was his 24th, and Elias Sports Bureau reports that s the most by any NFL QB in his first five seasons (record researched back to the 1970 merger). Prior to the Cleveland game, Dalton shared the mark of 23 with Dan Marino, Ben Roethlisberger and Matt Ryan. Dalton has 14 losses on the road, and a road winning percentage of.632. Andy and Manning, A.J. and Moss: On Dec. 6 at Cleveland, Bengals QB Andy Dalton passed the 3000-yard mark in passing for the fifth of his five seasons, and WR A.J. Green went to 1000 receiving yards for the fifth time in his five years. Both are in two-man clubs. The only other passer to debut with five straight 3000-yarders was Peyton Manning of Indianapolis ( ). Manning went on to play his first 13 seasons with 3000 or more, then sat out a year due to injury, and then he did it three more times, through Randy Moss got 1000 receiving for six straight seasons for Minnesota ( ) before falling below the 1000 mark in 04. Bernard makes much of chances: HB Giovani Bernard, the Bengals second-ranked player in yards from scrimmage (1202), contributed 48 yards in last week s win over Baltimore with six rushes for 36 yards and one reception for 12 yards. Bernard was second on the team this season in rushing yards (730) and had 472 as a receiver, ranked fourth on the team. He averaged 75.1 yards from scrimmage per game this season. Bernard ranked only 23rd in the NFL in total rushing yards, but he s among the NFL s better rushers in making use of his opportunities. His 4.7-yard percarry average ranked fourth among the top 23, and his 154 total carries was the second-fewest among the top 23. The average is key, says Bernard. That s what you want as a running back. Make the most of your opportunities. That s how this offense rolls. As long as we win. Whatever it takes. Bernard had a 100-yard rushing game (20-for-123) on Sept. 20 vs. San Diego. He scored two TDs, both rushing. Bernard made RB receiving history: Bengals third-year HB Giovani Bernard continued his highly productive season in a big way in the Nov. 22 Arizona game, setting a Bengals record for receiving yards in a game by a running back. Bernard had a team-best 128 yards (on eight catches), eclipsing the mark of 119 set in 1998 by HB Brandon Bennett at Pittsburgh. His eight receptions tied his career high. Bernard has had key receiving gains on game-deciding drives in wins at Baltimore and at Pittsburgh. Bernard s 56 receptions in 2013 are a season record for Bengals RBs. He currently holds the No. 3 spot with his 514 receiving yards as a rookie. The top two receiving yards seasons by a Bengals HB were both turned in by James Brooks, who gained 686 in 1986 and 576 in 85. Hill closes on a high note: HB Jeremy Hill rushed 16-for-96 (6.0) in the Baltimore game, posting his second-highest rushing total and highest yards-per-carry of the season. He had the longest Bengals rush of the year, a 38-yarder for a TD in the third quarter for a 21-9 Bengals lead. He also had two receptions for 19 yards and finished with a season-best 115 yards from scrimmage. So does that mean the 2014 rookie version of Hill is back for the playoffs? The version who totaled 1124 rushing yards for the season, including an NFLleading 929 over the season s final nine weeks? Time will tell, but the Baltimore game was not the only encouraging one in the season s second half for Hill, who led the 2015 team in rushing but had a somewhat modest 794 total with a modest 3.6-yard average. He was 16-for-86 in Game 10 at Arizona, 22-for-98 in Game 11 at Cleveland and 19-for-63 against Denver s top-ranked rush defense on Dec. 28. He had only 359 rushing yards and a 3.2 average through the first nine games. But in the final seven games he had 435 yards and a 3.9 average. Hill s 38-yard TD against the Ravens came on a fourth-and-one play and pushed the Bengals into a double-digit lead at That was a huge play, said head coach Marvin Lewis. Jeremy has played well each and every week. As we keep going, we just need him to keep going and playing better, and keep being more decisive. Overall, the Bengals are still looking for a more consistent rushing punch as the playoffs begin. The team posted only a 3.9-yard per-carry in the regular season, down a half-yard from last year s 4.4. We can run the ball better, says offensive coordinator Hue Jackson. But how we run it, whether it s two backs, one back, six backs, I don t care, we ll find a way. You have to have enough attempts against really good football teams because if not, too many things can happen to your quarterback that are not fair and fun. Hill finds the end zone: HB Jeremy Hill s 38-yard TD run vs. Baltimore gave him 12 TDs for the season, second on the team to TE Tyler Eifert (13) and tied for most by a Bengals RB since 2006, when Rudi Johnson scored 12. 6
