After opening the season with a 9-0 record and finishing exams, the fourth-ranked Blue Devils will be rewarded with a trip to Cancun, Mexico for the Caribbean Classic from Dec Duke will take on 21st-ranked Bowling Green (7-1), SMU (6-3) and 22nd-ranked Pittsburgh (10-0) before heading home for the Christmas holiday. The contest on Dec. 19 versus Bowling Green at 7:00 p.m. (EST) can be heard online at while the other two games will be aired on the Duke Radio Network (WDNC AM 620) with Steve Barnes (Playby-Play) and Missy Anderson (Color). The Pittsburgh contest will be aired tape-delay at 4:00 p.m. Duke is in the final leg of a stretch where the Blue Devils will face four straight ranked opponents. Following the Bowling Green contest, Duke will play unranked SMU and then will take on 22nd-ranked Pittsburgh. The Blue Devils are beginning a stretch of five straight contests on the road. Bowling Green enters the Caribbean Classic with a 7-1 record and is coached by Curt Miller, who is in his sixth season as Head Coach. The Falcons are coming off a 28-3 record and a trip to the NCAA Tournament before falling to UCLA in the first round, Leading Bowling Green this season has been Ali Mann (15.5 points, 4.1 rebounds), Carin Horne (13.4 points, 5.5 rebounds), Liz Honegger (11.0 points, 4.8 rebounds) and Kate Achter (10.3 points, 3.8 rebounds). SMU is coached by Rhonda Rompola and is off to a 6-3 start in Rompola is in her 16th year at SMU and owns a overall record. SMU has been led by Jenielle Dodds (14.0 points, 6.7 rebounds), Katy Cobb (11.0 points, 2.8 rebounds) and Delisha Wills (10.0 points, 7.3 rebounds) on the year. The Mustangs opened the season with four straight wins, but have lost three out of their last five entering the Caribbean Classic. Duke Versus The Conference USA... Duke owns a record against teams in the Conference USA-- East Carolina (6-9), Houston (1-0), Marshall (0-1), Tulane (1-0) and Tulsa (2-0). A Look at Pittsburgh... Pittsburgh enters the Caribbean Classic with a 10-0 record and is ranked 24th in the Associated Press poll, which marks the first time in 27 years the Panthers have been ranked in the AP poll. The Panthers have been led by Shavonte Zellous (20.6 points, 5.7 rebounds), Marcedes Walker (15.2 points, 7.7 rebounds) and Xenia Stewart (11.0 points, 4.9 rebounds) in Prior to the season, Pittsburgh lost All-Big East Second Team selection Mallorie Winn to a season-ending knee injury. Goestenkors To Face Berenato Once Again... Duke s Gail Goestenkors and Pittsburgh s Agnus Berenato will face off against each other for the first time since the season when Berenato was the head coach at Georgia Tech. From until , the two coaches squared off 25 times against each other with Goestenkors owning a record of 22-3 against Berenato. Goestenkors won the final 21 straight contests against the Yellow Jackets before Berenato left for Pittsburgh. Harding Approaching Milestone... Senior Lindsey Harding is 53 points shy of reaching 1,000 career points at Duke, which would mark the 20th player in Duke history to reach the 1,000-point plateau. Harding has increased her scoring each season at Duke averaging 6.2 points as a freshman, 6.8 as a sophomore, 10.7 as a junior and 12.4 this year. Both Alison Bales (778) and Wanisha Smith (728) each are nearing 800 career points.

3 Duke Women s Basketball Game Notes Duke at Caribbean Classic 3 Ohio Natives To Face Off... Alison Bales will go up against one of her high school rivals-- Amber Flynn of Bowling Green-- in Cancun, Mexico. Flynn is a native of Cincinnati, Ohio and attended North College Hill, while Bales is from Dayton, Ohio and attended Beavercreek. Bales high school squad posted a 5-1 record against North College Hill during Bales tenure. Overall, Bowling Green owns six players from Ohio and the Falcons are based out of Bowling Green, Ohio. Going Tropical... Once again the Blue Devils will head to a tropical destination this year as Duke will travel to Cancun, Mexico, from Dec for the Caribbean Classic. The trip will not be all fun and sun as the Blue Devils will have a tough schedule facing 21st-ranked Bowling Green, SMU and 22nd-ranked Pittsburgh. In the past, Duke has traveled to the Bahamas (twice), St. Thomas, Cancun and Puerto Rico. The last time the Blue Devils headed to Cancun, Mexico was in 2000 to play in the Fun in the Sun Shootout. Duke defeated Arkansas State, 69-45, and Oral Roberts, 62-51, to claim the title. One Of Most Improved; ACC Record In Reach... Senior Alison Bales has been one of the most improved players in Duke s history and in the nation this season. Bales has gone from averaging 3.3 points, 2.8 rebounds and 1.2 blocks as a freshman to averaging 11.8 points, 7.1 rebounds and 5.0 blocks as a senior. She has improved her scoring and rebounding each year and is approaching blocked shot records in the ACC and NCAA. Bales owns 299 blocks over the last three years for an average of ACC Career Blocked Shots DeMya Walker (UVA), Dawn Royster (UNC), Alison Bales (Duke), 2004-present Peggy Caple (CU), Dolores Bootz (GT), Overall, Bales is three blocks shy of becoming the ACC all-time leader as she has totaled 328 in 104 career games. Wanisha Smith Breaks out... After scoring double-figures in only one out of the first seven contests, junior Wanisha Smith has scored double-digits in two consecutive games. This was highlighted by a seasonhigh 18-point effort against 22nd-ranked Texas. She also pulled down a game-high eight rebounds, which tied a career high in 25 minutes. Over the last two games, Smith has averaged 15.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 2.0 steals and has hit 40.0 percent of her three-point field goals. Undefeated Starts... For only the fifth time in the 32-year history of Duke Women s Basketball, the Blue Devils opened the season with an 9-0 mark. It was the fourth time under the direction of Gail Goestenkors. If the Blue Devils win on Tuesday against Bowling Green, it will mark the third time under Goestenkors and fourth overall that Duke has began the season with a 10-0 record. Duke In December... Duke owns a 30-game win streak in contests played in the month of December. The last loss for the Blue Devils was on Dec. 27, 2001, versus second-ranked Tennessee in the ACC/SEC Challenge in Atlanta, Ga. Overall, Duke owns an record in the 15 years under Head Coach Gail Goestenkors. On The Road Again... Duke will hit the road for five contests before returning to Cameron Indoor Stadium on Jan. 3, The Blue Devils will travel to beautiful Cancun, Mexico from Dec after exams conclude. Then, Duke will head to Hanover, N.H., for the Blue Sky Resort Classic hosted by Dartmouth. Competing in the tournament will be Dartmouth, Boston University and Dayton. Abby Waner Named ACC Player of the Week... For the first time in her short career, Duke University sophomore Abby Waner has been selected Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Player of the Week on Dec. 11, after guiding the fourth-ranked Blue Devils (9-0) to victories over 11th-ranked Vanderbilt, 19th-ranked Rutgers and 22nd-ranked Texas by an average of 29.2 points. GOESTENKORS POSTING IMPRESSIVE WIN PERCENTAGE Duke Head Coach Gail Goestenkors has coached in 220 ACC regular season games and owns a record of , which is a 75.0 win percentage. The 75.0 percentage is higher than any men s and women s coach in ACC history with a minimum of 200 games coached. The second-best percentage is 72.8 by Dean Smith, who coached at North Carolina for 36 years. 4 Duke Women s Basketball Game Notes Duke at Caribbean Classic A native of Highlands Ranch, Colo., Waner averaged 16.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, 2.7 steals and 2.0 assists as the Blue Devils extended their current season-opening win streak to nine contests. Waner scored a season-high 21 points as she hit 9-of-15 field goals and 3-of-7 three-pointers to go along with two assists and one steal in only 28 minutes at 19th-ranked Rutgers. She also scored 14 points, tied a career-high with two blocks, had four rebounds and one steal in a victory over 11th-ranked Vanderbilt. The 5-9 guard closed out the week with 13 points, a season-high five rebounds, three assists and tied a career-high with six steals in 29 minutes versus 22nd-ranked Texas. Stellar Guards... Duke s trio of starting guards-- Lindsey Harding, Abby Waner and Wanisha Smith-- have combined for 97 assists to only 64 turnovers (1.5 assist/turnover ratio) through the opening nine contests. All three have dished out 24 or more assists. Early Leads... Duke has been a fast starting team in as the Blue Devils jumped out to early leads in each of the eight games, before falling behind 7-0 in the last game to Texas. Here is a listing of the fast starts-- Vanderbilt (9-2), Rutgers (7-0, 20-5), Old Dominion (9-0, 15-1), Michigan (7-0, 12-2), Penn State (15-2), Houston (11-2), Marist (10-0) and Northeastern (9-4). Home & The Road... In seven games played at Cameron Indoor Stadium this year, Duke is shooting 26.6 percent (25-94) from three-point land but in the two road contests the Blue Devils have hit 14 of 28 (50.0%) from behind the three-point arc. Senior Lindsey Harding is averaging 19.0 points a contest on the road, while hitting 12 of 21 (57.1%) from the field and 4-of-4 from downtown. In home games, Harding is averaging 10.6 points along with hitting 36.1 percent from the field and 23.5 percent (4-of-17) from three-point range. She is coming off hitting 3-of- 6 treys the last two games. Balanced Scoring... Through nine contests this season, nine of the 10 players have scored double-figures in at least one game except for Emily Waner. Three Blue Devils are averaging double-figure points-- Abby Waner (15.4), Alison Bales (11.8) and Lindsey Harding (12.4). All 10 players are averaging 3.6 points or more, while no player is seeing action in more than 27.3 minutes a contest. All 10 Duke players scored in each of the Blue Devils first seven contests. Abby Waner Hitting Her Stride... After arriving at Duke coming off winning Gatorade and McDonald s National H.S. Player of the Year, sophomore Abby Waner waited in the wings for her opportunity to shine last year as a freshman. 5 Duke Women s Basketball Game Notes Duke at Caribbean Classic 5 So far this year, Waner has picked up her scoring load averaging a team-best 15.4 points to go along with 4.3 rebounds, 3.7 steals, 2.7 assists and 0.7 blocks. The Highlands Ranch, Colo., product is hitting 53.1 percent of her field goals and has nailed 16 of 40 three-pointers (40.0%). Waner is the only Duke player to have scored double-figures in all nine games this year. Waner is coming off a season-high 21 points at 19thranked Rutgers three games ago. She hit 9-of-15 field goals and 3-of-7 treys in 28 minutes. As a senior in high school, Waner averaged 32.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, 5.7 steals and 6.9 assists as she led ThunderRidge to a 26-2 record and a third straight Class 5A State Championship. Blue Devils Pick Up Shooting... After shooting only 43.9 percent from the field over the first three contests, the Blue Devils came out on fire in four out of the last six contests. The Blue Devils shot over 50.0 percent from the field against Michigan, Old Dominion and Rutgers before hitting 43.8 percent against 11th-ranked Vanderbilt. As a team, Duke shot 50.0 percent against the Nittany Lions, 52.9 percent at the Wolverines and 52.8 percent versus ODU, all in the first half, while going on to finish with a 46.3 percent, 51.6 percent and a seasonhigh 59.0 percent, respectively, for those games. At Rutgers, Duke shot 45.5 percent in the first half and 57.1 percent in the second stanza. Duke has now raised its field goal percentage to 47.8 percent on the season and five Blue Devils are now shooting 50.0 percent or better on the year. Duke has been one of the top shooting teams in the nation over the last six years, ranking in the top-20 nationally in field goal percentage in each of those seasons. The Blue Devils led Division I with a 49.8 field goal percentage last year and have not shot below 45.7 percent from the field since The Blue Devils are in a stretch where they will face four straight ranked opponents for the first time in school history during the regular season. Duke faced four consecutive ranked foes in the NCAA Tournament in and In the NCAA Stats... The second edition of the NCAA stats have been released through games of Dec. 10, The Blue Devils are second in the nation in blocked shots (8.1), field goal percentage defense (29.2), scoring defense (45.3) and scoring margin (36.8). Alison Bales leads the nation in blocks (5.0) and Abby Waner ranks 11th in steals (3.7). Bowling Green is fourth in three-point field goal percentage (43.1) and seventh in three-point field goals made (8.3), while also ranking sixth in field goal percentage (49.6). Liz Honegger is second in three-point field goal percentage (60.6). SMU is fourth in free throw percentage (80.2) is 179th in rebound margin (-0.6). Pittsburgh is 15th in the nation in turnovers (14.0), while Shavonte Zellous is 12th in scoring (20.6) and Marcedes Walker is 18th in field goal percentage (59.6). Tough Defense For Blue Devils... As a team, Duke has blocked 73 shots (8.1 per game) and forced 24.4 turnovers a contest. Bales Moves Up In ACC/NCAA Record Books... As Alison Bales enters her final year with the Blue Devils, she is on the verge of becoming the ACC s alltime leader in blocked shots. Bales moved into third place on the ACC career list with her nine blocks against Penn State and now owns 328 for her career. She three more to move past Virginia s DeMya Walker (330) to become the all-time leader. Bales also moved into 22nd on the NCAA all-time blocked shots list with her four rejections versus Texas. Duke freshmen Bridgette Mitchell and Joy Cheek each made impressive college debuts on Nov. 11 against Northeastern. 10 Gail Goestenkor ors Head Coach 15th Year At Duke In her 14 years at Duke University, Gail Goestenkors has helped lead the Blue Devils from relative obscurity to national prominence. Known as Coach G to players, coaches, fans and student supporters, Goestenkors has raised the level of the women s basketball program at Duke to new heights. Today, because of Coach G, Duke is mentioned in the same breath with the other elite programs in women s college basketball. Since arriving at Duke in 1992, Goestenkors has accomplished feats that no other women s basketball coach in school history has been able to achieve. To put her success in perspective, Goestenkors has five more winning seasons (13) than there were in the 17 years prior to her arrival in Durham. In , the Blue Devils posted a 30-4 record, a second consecutive ACC Tournament title, an ACC regular season championship and a number one seed in the NCAA Tournament. It marked the first time in school history the Blue Devils won both the ACC regular season and Tournament titles in the same season. Senior Georgia Schweitzer and freshman Alana Beard earned All-America accolades, while Schweitzer captured her second consecutive ACC Player of the Year award. The season was one of Goestenkors finest coaching jobs in her 14 years with the Blue Devils. Picked to finish fourth in the ACC preseason poll and not ranked highly in any of the national polls, Duke raced to a 16-1 start on its way to capturing its first ACC Tournament Championship. The Blue Devils finished the year 28-6 despite losing three All-ACC starters to graduation and another, Peppi Browne, to injury halfway through the season. Nonetheless, Goestenkors and Duke regrouped to advance to the Sweet Sixteen and Coach G earned Basketball Times National Coach of the Year. In the season, the Blue Devils enjoyed one of the greatest seasons in the history of Duke women s basketball. During the season the Blue Devils recorded a 16- game winning streak, a 15-1 ACC record, and 11 wins over ranked opponents, all school records at the time. Goestenkors squad earned its then-highest national ranking ever, peaking at No. 2 at the end of the season. After beating three-time defending national champion Tennessee to capture the NCAA East Regional title, Duke advanced to its first Final Four, knocking off Georgia in the semifinals en route to a championship matchup with Purdue. Two more firsts for the Duke program in were the selection of Michele VanGorp to the prestigious Kodak All-America team and in the WNBA Draft. The 6-6 center, Duke s first-ever Kodak All-America, became the first Blue Devil to play in the WNBA as a member of the New York Liberty. If the past eight seasons show anything, they show how effective Goestenkors winning approach has been. Goestenkors record for highest winning percentage (.790) in school history offers evidence of her success: 364 total wins; an 86-7 mark at home against non-conference opponents; a record in NCAA Tournament play; six straight 30-win seasons; eleven 20-plus win seasons in the past 12 years; five ACC Tournament Championships; seven ACC regular season titles; and four NCAA Final Four appearances. Mitchell posted a game-high 18 points to go along with 13 rebounds, while Cheek added 12 points and 11 boards to become the first freshmen tandem to register double-doubles in their first collegiate game. Sophomore Abby Waner added 16 points, five steals and four rebounds, while Alison Bales pulled down 11 rebounds, had five blocks and scored eight points in only 21 minutes. Gay posted 14 points and 10 rebounds in 25 minutes of action as the Blue Devils improved to 2-0. Sophomore Abby Waner added 14 points, a career-high seven rebounds and four steals, while Alison Bales had 12 points, five rebounds, four blocks in only 19 minutes. Duke used a 12-2 run to build a 20-point advantage midway through the second half to take control after leading by 10 at halftime. Earnesia Williams had 13 points, fellow freshman Carla Cortijo had 11 and sophomore Erika Arriaran had 10 for Texas (7-2). Texas forward Tiffany Jackson, who entered the game averaging nearly 20 points, finished with eight points on 4-of-13 shooting and failed to reach double figures for the first time in 16 games. During the opening 20 minutes, the Longhorns had 18 turnovers and Duke was 19-of-25 from the free throw line - while Texas was 0-for-1. Texas finished with a season-worst 33 turnovers and was 7-of-9 from the line while the Blue Devils finished 23-for-30 from foul line.
