The Midshipmen enter the contest with a 3-22 overall mark (0-11 Patriot League) while Colgate is 7-19 (1-10 Patriot League). ABOUT COLGATE Colgate enters the game as losers of 14 of its last 16 games and its lone league win came over Navy, 65-54, in overtime in Hamilton, N.Y., on Jan. 21. The Raiders started the year 5-5, but have since gone just Over the last three games, Colgate has been outscored by a total of 56 points in losses to Bucknell, Lehigh and Army. The Raiders are paced by sophomore Pat Moore at 10.1 ppg. Senior guard Mike Venezia averages 9.8 ppg and six other players average at least 5.4 ppg. MIDSHIPMEN UPDATE Colgate is one of two Patriot League teams (Holy Cross the other) that owns a winning record against the Midshipmen. Colgate leads the all-time series between the two teams, Navy is shooting just 38.2 percent from the field in its 11 Patriot League contests after shooting 42.4 percent during its 14-game non-conference slate. Navy is shooting just 25.6 percent from three-point range in league games after shooting 28.3 percent in non-league play. Navy s 38.2 percent shooting in league games ranks 329th (out of 345) nationally. The Mids 25.6 percent three-point shooting in league games is tied for 341st (out of 345), ranking ahead of South Carolina State (.251), Southeastern Louisiana (.250) and Southern Cal (.239). In the first half only of the last two games, Navy is shooting 10- of-44 (.227) from the field and has scored just 29 points. In that span, Navy has one assist and 17 turnovers during the first half of the last two games. Since J.J. Navy started the same lineup in back-to-games against Army and American for the first time since Dec against Missouri and Monmouth. INDIVIDUAL NOTES Jordan Sugars became the seventh player in school history, and first since Eddie Reddick in 1991, to score 1,200 points and grab 600 rebounds. He is the first Navy player to reach those marks in the Patriot League era. In all games played among Patriot League freshmen, Worth Smith ranks third in scoring (7.0 ppg) and first in rebounding (5.2 rpg) and blocks (17). In just Patriot League games played among league freshmen, Worth Smith ranks first in points (7.5 ppg) and rebounding (5.7 rpg) and he leads all players in offensive rebounds per game (2.9 off rpg) by six rebounds. Worth Smith is trying to become just the sixth freshman, and first since Derrick Wall in 1992, in Navy history to score 200 points, grab 150 rebounds and shoot 45.0 percent from the field. Smith currently has 174 points, 129 rebounds and is shooting 45.7 percent from the field. Isaiah Roberts surpassed the 100-rebound plateau against American and now needs just 13 assists to become a member of the 300-point, 100-rebound, 100-assist, 50-steal club. Doing so this year would make him the sixth player to reach those marks by the end of his sophomore season, joining Vernon Butler, Chris Harris, Corey Johnson, Kaleo Kina and Brian Walker. 4 Coach DeChellis HEAD COACH ED DeCHELLIS Record at Navy: 3-22 (.120) / 1st year Career Record: (.467) / 16th year Ed DeChellis is in his first year at Navy, leaving after a very successful eight-year run at his alma mater, Penn State. DeChellis led the Nittany Lions to a spot in the Big 10 title game and a berth in the NCAA Tournament s second round a year ago. In 2009, DeChellis was named the Big 10 Coach of the Year after guiding the Nittany Lions to a NIT National title and a school-record 27 wins. His time at Penn State followed a successful run at East Tennessee State, where he led the Bucs to an NCAA Tournament in He was named the 2006 Coaches vs. Cancer Man of the Year and to date, has helped raise over 1.5 million dollars for Coaches vs. Cancer. In the year alone, he helped raise over $200,000 for the organization. Navy struggled with turnovers in the first half, but outscored American, 35-33, in the second half as it recorded just three of its 10 turnovers in the final 20 minutes. Navy s 12 points in the first half were the fewest in a half since scoring 11 in the first half against Holy Cross on Feb. 22, American s six turnovers were the fifth fewest by an opponent in school history. MIDS STRUGGLE TO SCORE WITHOUT AVILA Navy s leader in scoring, rebounding, assists and steals through the first 21 games, J.J. Avila, has resigned from the Naval Academy and is no longer a member of the Navy Basketball team. He was suspended on Feb. 2 by the Academy for a violation of Academy rules and he resigned from the Academy six days later. Avila will pursue a transfer and will be eligible to play Division I basketball for the season. At the time of his suspension, Avila was one of five players nationally to average 15.0 ppg, 7.0 rpg and 2.5 apg and his 691 points were the fourth most through a Navy player s sophomore season in school history. He and Vernon Butler ( ) are the only two players in school history have scored 500 points with 250 rebounds and 100 assists by the end of their sophomore seasons. Avila finishes his Navy career with 691 points (13.3 ppg), 315 rebounds (6.1 rpg), 135 assists (2.6 apg) and 92 steals (1.8 spg) in 52 career games. In the four games played without J.J. Avila, Navy has averaged just 50.8 points per game, almost 10 points less than the Mids averaged with him in the lineup. Ship selections were then handed out on Thursday, Feb. 2, in a ceremony for Naval Academy seniors. Jordan Sugars and Carlton Smith each received Surface Warfare Officer (Surface Warfare Officers are Navy officers whose training and primary duties focus on the operation of Navy ships at sea and the management of various shipboard systems). Sugars selected the USS Anchorage LPD 23 out of San Diego, Calif. Smith, meanwhile selected the USS Bataan out of Norfolk, Va., and will join 2011 Navy basketball graduates Romeo Garcia and Greg Brown on the ship in June. Ted Connolly received the Special Warfare assignment of Navy SEAL (Sea, Air and Land Teams -- U.S. Navy's principal special operations force and a part of the Naval Special Warfare Command (NSWC) as well as the maritime component of the United States Special Operations Command).
