Tedford inherits 18 returning starters, most of any team in the Pac-10, and faces the task of instilling confidence in an experienced team. He flatly states that his goal is to have a winning season right now. The Bears may have the opportunity to get off to a fast start with four of the first five contests at home. OFFENSE: New coach Jeff Tedford is an offensive specialist who will try to improve on a unit that managed just 18 points and 349 yards per game last year and coughed up a league-high 35 turnovers. Senior Kyle Boller has been Cal s starting quarterback the last three years and has passed for more than 5,000 yards and 36 TDs in his career. He is the obvious front-runner for the starting job, but sophomore Reggie Robertson, who started two games last year, and highly touted redshirt freshman Richard Schwartz will provide competition. The Golden Bears should be in good shape at tailback. Veteran Joe Igber returns after healing from a broken clavicle that sidelined him in Game 7 last year. When Igber went down, true freshman Terrell Williams entered the lineup and proceeded to rush for 688 yards to become the Bears leading rusher for the year. The top returning receiver is LaShaun Ward, who moved over from cornerback in mid-season last year and proved himself a dangerous deep threat. Ward averaged 23.1 yards per catch and had four TD receptions in his abbreviated season on offense. Geoff McArthur, Chase Lyman and Burl Toler have all seen action at wideout. The tight end should see the ball more often in Tedford s offense and the Bears return All-Academic selection Tom Swoboda, recognized primarily as a solid blocker. A new factor here could be the arrival of highly sought after JC transfer Brandon Hall. The offensive line could be a strength with three starters returning. Anchoring the right side are guard Scott Tercero and tackle Mark Wilson, each starting for the third straight year. Center Ryan Jones also returns and Nolan Bluntzer has seen starting time at guard and center. DEFENSE: California s defense fell off considerably last year after having been a strength in recent seasons. The Golden Bears ranked last in the Pac-10 in total defense and scoring defense. Obviously, a turnaround is needed and nine returning starters make that a realistic possibility. The defensive line may be the most experienced area of Cal s team as no less than eight players have had starting experience. The ringleader is end Tully Banta-Cain, who led the Bears in tackles for loss (16.5) and QB sacks (8). The 16.5 tackles for loss ranked second in the Pac-10. Josh Gustaveson and Kyle Boller Tom Canada should compete for time at the other end. California is deep at tackle with what amounts to three starters returning to two positions in Daniel Nwangwu, Josh Beckham and Lorenzo Alexander, who looks like a future star after seeing starting time as a freshman last year. John Klotsche, Cal s tackle leader last year, and Matt Nixon are two-year starters at inside linebacker. Calvin Hosey will get first look for the starting outside back slot. California features a steller free safety in Nnamdi Asomugha, but the secondary as a unit needs vast improvement from Competing for playing time at cornerback will be returnees James Bethea, Ray Carmel, Jemeel Powell and Atari Callen. Bert Watts has first call at strong safety. All the returnees, save Asomugha, will face challenges from five incoming freshmen DBs, all of whom bring speed to the table. KICKING GAME: Mark Jensen returns to handle the placekicking chores after an excellent 11- of-14 success ratio on field goals last season. Likewise, Tyler Frederickson returns as punter. 4 JEFF TEDFORD, HEAD COACH Jeff Tedford, a highly-regarded offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the No. 2-ranked Oregon Ducks last year, christens his head football coaching career at the University of California this fall. Tedford, 40, has earned a national reputation as one of the bright young minds and developers of quarterbacks in college football today. During his 14-year coaching career with Oregon ( ), Fresno State ( ) and the Candanian Football League's Calgary Stampeders ( ), he has devised record-setting offenses at every stop. Under his tutelage, such quarterbacks as Akili Smith and Trent Dilfer have blossomed into high first-round draft picks, and Joey Harrington emerged as a Heisman trophy finalist last year. A native of Lynwood, Calif., Tedford played an integral role on Mike Bellotti s staff at Oregon during the past four seasons a period in which the Ducks have posted the Pac- 10 s best record of in finishing progressively better each year (8-4 in 98; 9-3 in 99; 10-2 in 00; 11-1 in 01). Under his direction, the 2001 Pac-10 Champions ranked second in rushing offense (196.5 ypg) and third in both scoring (34.0 ppg) and total offense (430.2 ypg) among Conference schools. In 1992 as quarterbacks coach at Fresno State, Tedford began honing the skills of future Super Bowl champion quarterback Trent Dilfer. Under his guidance, the Bulldogs quarterback earned first team All-WAC honors for a team offense that led the nation in scoring (44.2 ppg), ranked second nationally in total offense (541.9) and beat USC in the Freedom Bowl. A season later, Tedford moved up to offensive coordinator, and Fresno State ranked third nationally in scoring and total offense. Tedford made an immediate impact at Oregon when he joined Bellotti in His first season as offensive coordinator, the Ducks set school records in yards passing (3,856), total offense (5,795), and points scored (473). Tedford began his coaching career as a volunteer assistant at Fresno State in 1987, spending two years there before joining Calgary in the Canadian Football League in He served as an offensive assistant with the Stampeders for three seasons. Tedford enjoyed a remarkable playing career, both at Fresno State and in the Canadian Football League. He earned honorable mention All-America notice in 1982, when he set school records for passing (2,993) and TD passes (24). He played in the CFL for six seasons with Hamilton, Calgary, Saskatchewan and Winnipeg.
