However, since the upset, the Catamounts have come up on the short end of the stick in six-straight games, and they enter today's game with a 2-6 overall record. The road doesn't get much easier for Western Carolina either as the Catamounts next face Appalachian State, the nation's top ranked I-AA program, followed by Florida, who currently ranks seventh in the latest I-A BCS standings, the last week of the year. Offensively, running back Darius Fudge leads the team with 802 yards rushing and four touchdowns, and quarterback Bennett Swygert paces the passing game as he has completed 80-of-140 pass attempts for 815 yards and five touchdowns. Linebacker Shelton Gaffney leads the Catamounts' defense with 58 tackles, while fellow linebacker Kadeem Morgan ranks second on the team with 50 stops. Looking For The Millionth Fan Today could be a historic day in the annals of Flames Athletics as Liberty enters the day needing just 3,523 more fans to surpass the 1,000,000 mark in all-time home attendance. Liberty is having a banner year in attendance as the Flames rank 11th nationally in home attendance according to stadium capacity as Liberty is filling its stadium at 99.3 percent over the first four home games of the year. Liberty holds a record at the on-campus facility (68.2 winning percentage), and started competition in the venue with a victory over Towson on October 21, The Flames have posted 13 winning seasons at home over the last 16 years, including a perfect 5-0 record during the 1992 campaign. During the summer, the Athletics Department made a concerted effort to upgrade several athletics facilities, including a new playing surface at Williams Stadium. Stateof-the-art FieldTurf was installed at Williams Stadium, replacing the old AstroTurf that had been used since the opening of the facility in FieldTurf is the latest innovation in artificial playing surfaces and is the surface of choice for 24 NFL stadiums, including Ford Field where Super Bowl XL was played last February, and at over 40 NCAA stadiums across the country. Three Flames Tacklers Tally 100 Career Tackles The Flames graduated three defenders last year that were members of the Flames' 100 career tackle club with C.J. Moore leading the way as he finished his career with 282 career stops. Following the defensive back in the 100 career tackle club were linebacker Kenneth Kemp (163 career tackles) and fellow defensive back Shane Lancaster (162 career stops). In five out of six seasons in which Liberty has started the year with a 2-0 record, the Flames have gone on to post an overall winning record. The only time that Liberty has failed to finish a year above the.500 mark after a 2-0 start was in 1975 when Liberty won its first three games, but finished the year with a 4-5 record. Year Season Start Final Record ???? WOW - What Wonderful Crowds The excitement of a new brand of Flames' football is quickly growing. Evidence of the excitement has repeatedly been seen in this year's attendance figures as three of Liberty's four home games rank in the Top 15 in the school's attendance annals. On October 14, the Flames set a Liberty and Big South record as 15,631 fans saw the Flames battle in-state opponent William & Mary in the school's annual Homecoming game. One week later, Liberty filled the stadium once again as 12,056 people saw Liberty open Big South Conference play against Gardner-Webb, marking the sixthlargest crowd in school history. Larger home crowds have proven to be an advantage for the Flames as Liberty has posted a 12-9 record in Williams Stadium home games where 10,000 or more fans have attended. In 1998, Liberty had three games in which it accumulated 10,000 fans, while four years saw crowds of 10,000 fans assemble at Williams Stadium twice. Just prior to the start of the season, Rocco added a pair of players he recruited as high school stars as offensive lineman Eddie Pinigis and defensive lineman/linebacker Vince Redd have both transferred from Virginia. Jennings, Lloyd and Pinigis have started each game of the year, while Davis has seen playing time in all but one game. Redd is sitting out this year and will be eligible to compete next season. Rocco came to Liberty after a five-year stint at Virginia, including the last three years as associate head coach. The remainder of Rocco's 22-year assistant coaching career includes stints at Maryland, Texas, Boston College, Tulsa, Colorado, Wake Forest and with the NFL's New York Jets. Western Carolina's Kent Briggs has posted a record in four-plus years at the helm of the Catamounts' program. Briggs is no stranger to the Catamounts' program as he was a four-year letterwinner at Western Carolina ( ) and he served as an assistant coach for nine seasons ( ). Four Fearless Leaders During halftime of Liberty's annual spring game on April 29, head coach Danny Rocco introduced his new player leadership group as he named Jason Horn, Rashad Jennings, Manny Rojas and Jarrett Winfrey as 2006 team captains. Senior Jarrett Winfrey helps to anchor Liberty's offensive line, while newcomer Rashad Jennings adds some excitement to the Flames' offense at tailback in Liberty's new two-back offensive set. On the defensive side of the ball, senior Jason Horn leads the Flames' defensive line, while linebacker Manny Rojas returns for his fifth year with the program and serves as the Flames' leader at linebacker. Rocco has brought in a new offensive coordinator in Scott Wachenheim and a new defensive coordinator in Tom Clark. Rocco also added a new quarterbacks coach in Brandon Streeter and a new defensive line/special teams coach in Chad Wilt. Remaining from last year's staff are Pete Sundheim (assistant head coach/tight ends), Frank Hickson (running backs), Marshall Roberts (defensive backs), Charlie Skalaski (wide receivers/recruiting coordinator) and Robert Wimberly (linebackers). Wachenheim Brings New Ways To Flames' Offense For the first time in over a decade, the Flames are running a two-back offense as new offensive coordinator Scott Wachenheim has brought the offensive scheme back to Liberty. The last time that Liberty ran a two-back set was during the 1994 and 1995 seasons with Lawrence Worthington and J.T. Morris, and the tandem proved to be successful as Worthington finished his career with 2,723 yards rushing which ranks third in school history. Wachenheim comes to Liberty after spending the previous 12 seasons at Rice, including his last five years as offensive coordinator. Wachenheim helped Rice build a dominant ball-control offense that ranked among the nation's best during his tenure. During the 2004 season, Rice led the nation in rushing offense (306.5 yards per game), while the Owls' 2003 squad ranked second in the country, racking up a school record of 3,800 rushing yards. In 2001, Wachenheim's direction enabled Rice to break the school record for points scored (333) and total offense (4,846 yards). Points Are At A Premium The Flames have allowed just 120 total points this year in eight games, which has the Flames ranked 15th in the nation in scoring defense (15.00 points per game). The Flames are currently on pace to break the school record for fewest points allowed in a season as Liberty finished the 1979 campaign with a record thanks in part to allowing just 176 total points (16.0 points per game).

The Flames finished 1989 with a 7-3 overall record and Rutigliano finished his career with a coaching record, which included six winning seasons. Danny Demands Stout Defense Head coach Danny Rocco spent his previous 22 years of football coaching as an assistant/associate coach at various levels on the defensive side of the field and he is quite proud of his current defensive unit at Liberty. Liberty enters today's game ranked 15th in the nation in scoring defense as the Flames are allowing an average of points per game. The Flames recorded shutouts in two out of their first four games and are one of just two I-AA teams to have recorded multiple shutouts this year (the other is Cal Poly). Finishing Up Strong Over the history of the Flames' football program, Liberty has posted a record during the month of November. The 11th month of the year has been especially kind to Liberty of late as the Flames finished the month undefeated two out of the last three seasons. Liberty closed out the 2003 and 2004 seasons on a pair of four-game winning streaks. Flames Against The Best Last weekend, Liberty faced conference foe Coastal Carolina, who was ranked 22nd in the Sports Network weekly poll and 23rd in the College Sports News weekly poll (heading into the week), marking the 46th time that Liberty has squared off against a nationally-ranked I-AA opponent in the history of the program. With the two-point loss to the Chanticleers, the Flames record falls to 7-39 against nationally-ranked teams, including 18-straight losses to a ranked opponent. The Flames last victory over a nationally-ranked opponent came in 1997 when the Flames closed out a miraculous 9-2 season with a victory over 15th-ranked Appalachian State in Boone, N.C., on November 22nd. Taking A Look At The Turnovers The Flames tied a season high last Saturday by committing two turnovers against Coastal Carolina (both interceptions). Liberty has taken great pride in taking care of the ball this season as the Flames' offense has committed just seven turnovers (three fumbles and four interceptions). Liberty's opponents have turned the Flames' seven turnovers into just 17 points on a pair of touchdowns and a field goal. Equally, Liberty's defense has forced eight turnovers as well (two forced fumbles and six interceptions), leading to 17 points on a pair of touchdowns. Ranking Among The Best Nationally In Turnovers Liberty has committed just seven turnovers this year and ranks tied for fifth nationally in fewest turnovers committed. There are only four teams nationally that have committed fewer turnovers than Liberty (Illinois State, New Hampshire, San Diego and William & Mary - all with six turnovers). Liberty currently ranks tied for 50th in the nation in turnover margin (.13) as the Flames have forced eight turnovers.

LIBERTY UNIVERSITY Ever So Close Liberty has lost its last three games, including back-to-back Big South contests, by a combined six total points. The two-point setback to Coastal Carolina last weekend marked the sixth-straight Big South Conference game that Liberty has lost by six or fewer points, dating back to the beginning of league play in Liberty has dropped those six games by a total of 22 points and an average of 3.7 points per contest. Keepers Of The Clock Liberty's ground attack has helped the Flames win the time of possession battle for the last four games and in six out eight contests this year. On the season, the Flames are averaging over a one-minute TOP advantage (31:11 to 28:49) and currently lead the Big South Conference in the TOP battle. Keeping The QB Clean Coastal Carolina was just the fourth team this year to get to a Flames quarterback as a pair of Chanticleers tacklers shared on a quarterback sack last weekend. Liberty's offensive line has done a great job holding off would-be tacklers as the Flames currently rank seventh nationally in quarterback sacks allowed (7). Approaching A Familiar Mark The Flames lead the Big South and rank 13th nationally as Liberty is averaging rushing yards per game. Behind the running efforts of tailback Rashad Jennings (828 yards), running back/quarterback Zach Terrell (465 yards) and freshman Terron Lawrence (221 yards), Liberty enters today's game with 1,682 rushing yards, leaving the Flames just 318 yards shy of the 2,000 yard mark. Liberty has surpassed that tally four times in school history, including three times over the last four years (2002 with 2,019 yards, 2003 with a school record 2,614 yards and 2004 with 2,334 yards). Total Team Effort The Flames have the stingiest defense in the Big South and the 15th best in the nation which is a credit to Liberty's entire defense unit and not just one player. The Flames currently don't have a player rank in the conference's Top 10 in tackles (Stevie Ray Lloyd is the highest at 12th) and the Flames have just four players in the Top 30. Hurrying Up The Hurler For the second-straight contest and the third time this year, Liberty finished a game with seven quarterback hurries against Gardner-Webb two weeks ago (against Coastal, Liberty finished with just one QB hurry). Tyler Turner led the team against the Bulldogs with a career high three quarterback hurries. The Flames currently rank second in the Big South in QB hurries as Liberty is averaging 3.1 hurries per contest. Gardner-Webb leads the league as the Bulldogs are averaging 5.0 hurries a game. Batting Them Back Liberty currently ranks first in the Big South Conference in pass breakups as the Flames have tallied a league-best 28 deflections over the first eight games this year (3.5 per game). The stat is a total team accomplishment as Liberty has just two players rank in the Top 10 in passes defended. On the season, 13 different players have broken up a pass with E.L. Estes and Patrick Calvary leading the way with five breakups each. Don't Run On The Flames Not only can Liberty run the ball with efficiency, but the Flames aren't bad at defending the run as well as Liberty currently ranks first in the Big South and 24th nationally in rushing defense. The Flames are allowing an average of rushing yards per game and opponents have scored just eight rushing touchdowns in eight games. Liberty has held three opponents this year to less than 100 rushing yards in a game (St. Paul's, Glenville State and Gardner-Webb).

Liberty has seen a dramatic increase in its penalty average over the last few games. The Flames averaged 5.3 penalties for 37.0 yards over the first four games of the year. However, Liberty is averaging 7.8 penalties for 82.5 yards over the last four games. The Flames currently rank third in the Big South in penalties (59.5 yards per game). Bolden Garners League Honors Dominic Bolden is this week's Big South Special Teams Player of the Week after he joined an elite group this past weekend. The sophomore returned a kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown against Coastal Carolina to become the fourth player to return a kickoff for a touchdown in league history. Bolden also became the first Flame to return a kickoff for a score in two years as Sam Gado returned one 97 yards on the same field against the Chanticleers in Two Pass The 1,000 Yard Mark The Gardner-Webb game will long be remembered by both Zach Terrell and Wynton Jackson as the duo surpassed the 1,000 career yardage mark during the same contest. A one-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter gave Terrell his 1,000th career rushing yard, allowing him to become the 14th player in Big South history to surpass the mark. Also, Jackson caught four passes for 57 yards against the Bulldogs, giving him 1,034 career receiving yards. Terrell Is On A Tear For the third-straight week, Zach Terrell found the end zone twice as the sophomore rushed for 114 yards and two touchdowns against Coastal Carolina last weekend. Terrell also rushed for two scores against William & Mary and Gardner-Webb, giving him nine rushing touchdowns on the year. Terrell leads the Big South in rushing touchdowns this year and currently ranks 37th nationally in scoring. Rojas Rolls Into Second Place Manny Rojas currently ranks second in Big South Conference history as he enters today's game with 319 career tackles. The senior added five more tackles to his career tally last weekend against Coastal Carolina in a game that featured the league's top two career tacklers. The Chanitcleers' Jamar Leath leads the league with 335 career tackles, including 15 against the Flames. Still Playing A Man Down For the fourth-straight week, the Flames will be without the services of senior defensive lineman Jason Horn who suffered a fractured fibula in his left leg during practice leading up to the William & Mary game. At the time of his injury, Horn led the Big South in tackles for a loss and sacks as the senior had recorded 7.5 tackles for a loss (44 yards) and 5.0 sacks (40 yards) over the first five games of the year. Also at the time of the injury, the defensive lineman ranked fifth nationally in sacks (1.00 per game) and sixth in tackles for a loss (1.70 per game). Horn has recorded a tackle for a loss in four out of five games this year (no TFL against Savannah State) and a sack in three out of five games (two against St. Paul's and Glenville State and one against Wake Forest).
