4 NYLA MILLESON Head Coach Fifth Season Kansas State, (18th season) Nyla Milleson begins her fifth season at the helm of the George Mason women s basketball program entering the season. She became the eighth head coach in program history on April 16, The Patriots have gradually improved, especially in Atlantic 10 Conference play, under Milleson s watch. After winning just one A-10 contest in the Patriots inaugural season in the league - the Patriots improved to five wins in The last two seasons, Mason finished with identical 6-10 records in league action for its most conference wins since The Patriots advanced to the quarterfinals of the A-10 Tournament for the first time. Milleson mentored three-time Atlantic 10 All-Conference selection Taylor Brown ( ). The point guard ended her three years at Mason with 1,693 points - the second-most in program history. She was also the first player in program history with at least 1,500 points, 400 rebounds and 300 assists - all under Milleson s watch. Two players under her watch, Bridget O Donnell (Czech Republic) and Kristi Mokube (Greece), are currently playing professionally oversaeas. Milleson spent six years as the head coach at Missouri State where she led the Lady Bears to three WNIT appearances. Under the tutelage of Milleson, the Lady Bears went (.547) and were the 2012 Missouri Valley Conference regular-season champions. In six seasons, Milleson mentored 21 All-MVC selections, 13 All-MVC academic honorees, two MVC Newcomer of the Year winners, two MVC Freshman of the Year recipients and one MVC Player of the Year. Prior to Missouri State, she started the women s basketball program at Drury University ( ). She made five straight NCAA Division II Tournament appearances, including a 2004 NCAA Division II national championship runner-up finish. Milleson led the Panthers to three Elite Eight appearances and six conference titles in seven seasons, while being named the Heartland Conference Coach of the Year four times. She was inducted into Drury s Athletics Hall of Fame last fall. 5 Women s Basketball Game Notes SCOUTING RHODE ISLAND The Rams (2-15, 0-4 Atlantic 10) have lost seven straight. They last won on Dec. 11 against Fairfield. Rhode Island is coming off a loss to VCU on Wednesday. The Rams are paced by sophomore center Nicole Jorgensen, who leads the team in scoring (12.8 ppg) and rebounding (6.8 rpg). SERIES HISTORY Mason and Rhode Island are 2-2 all-time, with all four meetings coming in the last four years and all since Mason joined the Atlantic 10 in The Patriots have won the last two meetings. Most recently, they defeated URI in Fairfax last February. They also won their last road trip to Kingston, a victory aon Feb. 13, RECAPPING GEORGE WASHINGTON The Patriots suffered a setback at George Washington last Sunday. Freshman Nicole Cardaño-Hillary scored a careerhigh 26 points and graduate student Natalie Butler posted her 16th straight double-double, which is tied for the most in the nation, with 16 points and 18 rebounds. The Patriots shot just 31.6 percent from the field and committed 18 turnovers. The game featured 13 lead changes and six ties. But a five-minute drought in the fourth quarter allowed George Washington to pull away, snapping the Patriots three-game winning streak. REBOUND RECORD Graduate student Natalie Butler ended 2017 in notable fashion on Dec. 31 against Davidson. The 6-foot-5 center grabbed 28 rebounds, setting the school record and tying the A-10 mark. The native of Fairfax Station, Va., broke the Mason record of 27 set by Erin Cloyd on Dec. 7, 1977 against Georgetown. Butler matched the league mark set by Temple s Olivia Bradley on Jan. 26, Butler grabbed 15 rebounds after halftime and recorded 20 rebounds or more for the second time this season and fifth time in her career. Her previous career-high was 21 when she was a freshman at Georgetown in She needs just 30 rebounds to reach 1,000 for her career. IN THE RANKINGS A couple of Patriots are among national and conference leaders in several categories. Graduate student Natalie Butler is tied for the most double-doubles (16) in the country and leads the nation in rebounding (15.2 rpg). She also ranks first in the nation in both total rebounds (258) and defensive rebounds (174). The 6-foot-5 center is also the Atlantic 10 s top scorer (18.4 ppg) and rebounder (15.2 rpg). Freshman Nicole Cardaño- Hillary (18.2 ppg) ranks second in the A-10 in scoring. She also ranks sixth in the country with 281 field goal attempts (17.6 attempts a game). The point guard is second among Division I freshmen in points per game (18.2) and third in steals (43). A-10 HONORS Natalie Butler and Nicole Cardaño-Hillary have raked in the weekly Atlantic 10 Conference honors so far this season. Butler, a graduate student from Fairfax Station, Va., has been named the A-10 Player of the Week five times (three solo, two shared) this season. Cardaño-Hillary, a freshman from Madrid, Spain, has received A-10 Rookie of the Week honors three times. STRONG START The Patriots jumped out to a 13-3 mark for their best start in the Division I era, which dates to Mason s start matched the team that went 13-3 for the season. Mason began the season 10-2 for the first time since the squad also started 10-2 en route to a 21-win season. In addition, the 11 non-conference wins by this year s squad were the most since the season. They also won six straight games earlier in the season for only their second six-game winning streak since DOMINATING THE BOARDS The battle of the boards has been a significant barometer to Mason s success so far this season. The Patriots have won the rebounding battle in 15 games this season, compiling a 13-2 record when doing so. In two of their losses (at Michigan and at Colorado), their opponents have held the rebounding edge. They ve held a rebounding margin in wins and and a -6.5 margin in losses. They ve hauled in more than 50 rebounds five times this year, and on Dec. 7, they grabbed a season-high 56 rebounds against LIU Brooklyn. They are seventh in the country in total rebounds (769) and lead the league and rank sixth in the country in rebounding (45.2). They also have the top rebounding margin (+9.6) in the A-10. DYNAMIC TRIO Nearly halfway through the season, the Patriots have shown they have three players capable of putting up big numbers every night. Graduate student Natalie Butler (18.6 ppg), freshman Nicole Cardaño-Hillary (17.8 ppg) and sophomore Jacy Bolton (10.9 ppg) are combining to average 47.3 points a game. The trio has compiled point performances: Butler (six), Cardaño-Hillary (seven) and Bolton (one). In a win against Drake on Nov. 24, Butler scored a then career-high 26 points and Bolton and Cardaño-Hillary each added 21 points (a personal-best for Bolton). It marked the first time since Feb. 12, 2014 that the Patriots had three players score more than 20 points in a game. They ve all scored more than 15 points in the same game on three occassions. Butler and Cardaño-Hillary have scored in double figures all 16 games. Cardaño-Hillary (43) leads the A-10 in steals. Cardaño-Hillary (37), Bolton (22) and sophomore Sarah Kaminski (25) account for 84 of the team s 97 3-pointers. Bolton ranks first in free-throw shooting percentage (minimum 30 attempts) at 81.1 percent. DISHING IT OUT The Patriots have dished out 244 assists this season on 409 made field goals. That s a 59.7 assist rate percentage, which is their highest as a team since the squad dished out assists at a 62.5 percent. HOME SWEET HOME Dating back to the final home game of last season, the Patriots are on a 11-game home winning streak for their longest in program history. They ve won 10 straight this winter, which is also their most consecutive home wins in one season (surpassing the squad s eight in a row). Mason s 10-0 start this year is the best start at home in program history and marks just their sixth season with at least 10 home wins in the 33-year history of EagleBank Arena. THE BUTLER DID IT Connecticut graduate transfer Natalie Butler has made a significant impact in her first 14 games as a Patriot. The 6-foot-5 center from nearby Fairfax Station, Va., is averaging an Atlantic 10-best 18.7 points and 15.0 rebounds, most in the country. She also leads the country in total rebounds (240) and defensive rebounds (160) and is sixth in offensive rebounds per game (5.0). In addition, she has posted 15 consecutive doubledoubles, which is tied for the most in Division I, and has 41 career double-doubles. She is just the 15th player in Division I history to post 15 straight double-doubles. On Dec. 31, she set the school record with 28 rebounds, which also tied the A-10 record, against Davidson in addition to scoring 19 points. On Dec. 11, she scored her 1,000th career point in the third quarter of Mason s win over UMBC. On Dec. 21, she scored a career-high 35 points and grabbed 20 rebounds (one shy of a career high) on a personal-best 13-of-16 shooting against Houston to become just the second player in the country this season with more than 35 points and 20 rebounds in the same game. She has had six games of 20 points or more and eight games with at least 15 rebounds. The former Lake Braddock star is enrolled in graduate school at Mason to pursue a master s degree in global affairs and is eligible to play immediately. QUITE AN INTRO Freshman Nicole Cardaño-Hillary has quickly made a name for herself, averaging 18.2 points for the second-most in the Atlantic 10. The 5-foot-7 point guard from Madrid, Spain, has scored in double figures in all 17 games. Her 43 steals are the most in the Atlantic 10. She had a career-high six against UMBC (Dec. 11) for the most by a Mason player in two years. She ranks ninth in the country with 304 field goal attempts (17.9 attempts a game). She has scored more than 20 points seven times this season, including a career-high 26 against George Washington on Jan. 7. Her 26 points were the most by a Mason freshman since Laura Kooij scored 41 against Tennessee-Chattanooga on Nov. 24, She had 23 points against LIU Brooklyn on Dec. 7 and made the game-tying layup with 11 seconds left to force overtime in an eventual victory. She scored 22 points and made a career-high five 3-pointers at No. 24/23 Michigan on Nov. 10 in the season opener. BOLT-ON OF LIGHTNING Sophomore Jacy Bolton, an Atlantic 10 Conference All-Rookie Team selection a year ago, has picked up where she left off. The 6-foot guard/forward from Drexel, Mo., currently ranks third on the team with 10.2 points and 5.1 rebounds a game. She leads the team in free-throw shooting (.811). PATRIOTS NEAR AND FAR Mason s roster features 15 players from nine states and three countries. Freshman Marika Korpinen hails from Turku, Finland but spent the last two years at Long Island Lutheran High School in Brookville, N.Y. Point guard Nicole Cardaño-Hillary (Madrid, Spain) was born in Spain but moved to Texas when she was 12. Redshirt sophomore Taylor Byrne also attended Lutheran High and hails from Massapequa, N.Y. Another New York native, Danielle Deoul (Washingtonville, N.Y.) joins the Patriots for her freshman year. A little closer to home, graduate transfer Natalie Butler (Fairfax Station, Va.), senior Tayler Dodson (Harrisonburg, Va.), freshman Camarie Gatling (Richmond, Va.) and sophomore Alexsis Grate (Hampton, Va.) are natives of Virginia. A couple of former high school teammates hail from just across the border in Maryland - redshirt juniors Casey Davis (Gambrills, Md.) and Camden Musgrave (Bowie, Md.). The roster features a sophomore trio from the Midwest - Jacy Bolton (Drexel, Mo.), Sarah Kaminski (Plymouth, Minn.) and Allie McCool (St. Leon, Ind.). The Patriots also boast a couple players from the South junior Jewel Triggs (Thibodaux, La.) and sophomore DeJah Williford-Kelley (Columbia, S.C.). TAYLER-MADE Senior captain Tayler Dodson has done yeoman s work this season. The 5-foot-11 forward from Harrisonburg, Va., native, leads the team with 50 assists (2.9 a game). She also ranks second on the team with 5.5 rebounds a game. Known more as a glue player, Dodson had one of the best offensive performances of her career on Jan. 3 against La Salle, scoring a season-high 15 points on 6-of- 11 shooting. It was her most points in more than three years and the most she has scored in an A-10 game. She dished out a careerhigh eight assists in the season opener at Michigan on Nov. 10. She has recorded three games of 10 or more boards, including a career-high 12 rebounds in consecutive games against Southeast Missouri State and American. For her career, her 191 assists are 18th all-time at Mason. Her 402 rebounds rank 31st. DEGREE AHEAD Freshman Camarie Gatling, who has played in all 17 games this season, arrived at Mason with a degree already in hand. The Richmond native finished her associate s degree in science through a partnership with J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College and Highland Springs High School. At Mason, the 6-foot forward plans to major in kinesiology. MCDONALD S QUARTET The Patriots boast four players who were nominated for the prestigious McDonald s All-American High School basketball team. Freshman Nicole Cardano-Hillary (2017), junior Jewel Triggs (2015) and redshirt junior Casey Davis (2014) were all nominated as high school seniors. Connecticut graduate transfer Natalie Butler was nominated in 2013 while at Lake Braddock before she began her collegiate career at Georgetown. TRANSFERRING IN George Mason s roster features three players who have logged minutes at other Division I schools. Graduate transfer Natalie Butler spent the last two season at Connecticut, helping the Huskies to the 2016 national championship. The center from Fairfax Station, Va., was immediately eligible to play at Mason because she graduated with her bacehlor s degree from UConn in May. Prior to her time at UConn, she spent one year at Georgetown ( ) where she was named the Big East Freshman of the Year. Redshirt junior Camden Musgrave sat out the season after transferring from Central Connecticut State. The guard from Bowie, Md., averaged 10 points in 60 games and 26 starts at Central Connecticut. She was named to the All-Northeast Conference Third Team in and the the NEC All-Rookie Team in Redshirt sophomore Taylor Byrne also sat out last year after transferring from Seton Hall. The forward from Massapequa, N.Y., averaged 3.3 points in 21 games in , helping the Pirates reach the NCAA Tournament. OLD TEAMMATES Redshirt juniors Camden Musgrave and Casey Davis were teammates and friends long before their time at Mason. The duo started playing AAU ball together when they were 10. They then reconnected in high school when Musgrave transferred from Academy of the Holy Cross to Elizabeth Seton, where Davis was enrolled, her sophomore year. They spent the last three years of high school on the same team. Musgrave started her collegiate career at Central Connecticut State but again rejoined Davis. She transferred to Mason before the school year. She sat out last year but practiced with the team and is back on the court this season with Davis, who is in her fourth year as a student at Mason but redshirted the season due to an injury REWIND The Patriots won 13 games for the second time in three years, compiling a record last winter. They finished 10th in the Atlantic 10 with a 6-10 mark and fell in the first round of the conference tournament to Duquesne, which reached the A-10 title game and made the WNIT. A-10 All-Conference Third Team selection Kara Wright led the team with 15 points a game, 6.2 rebounds a contest and 90 assists in her senior season. Fellow senior Tiffany Padgett averaged 8.8 points and 5.1 rebounds.
