Pulaski, Tenn...W, Cumberland looks to extend winning streak For the first time this year, the Bulldogs won back-to-back games with a win over 18th-ranked Union Univ., on Thursday night. CU will try to keep that momentum going as the Bulldogs welcome Martin Methodist to the Dallas Floyd Recreation Center this afternoon. The RedHawks, who sit at 1-4 against TranSouth competition, enter the game with the highest scoring offense (84.5 ppg) in the league after taking over the top spot from Blue Mountain. For the second straight game at Cumberland, two of the top players in the conference will be on display as Martin Methodists Will Shackleford and CU s Brandon Springer face off. Shackleford an Springer are the NAIA s leading rebounder and scorer, respectively. MMC s big man is averaging 15.3 points and 13.1 rebounds per contest, while Springer is also averaging a double-double per game with 23.6 points and 10.4 rebounds. The Nashville, Tenn., native s 10.4 boards per contest ranks eighth in the nation, while Shackleford also has one other top 10 stat, ranking sixth in field goal percentage (.642). Last season against the RedHawks Cumberland took both regular season meetings from the team from Pulaski, Tenn., winning the January matchup and claiming a victory on the road the following month. In the first contest, four Bulldogs scored in double figures, with Brandon Powell leading the way with 15 points. No. 7 CU led most of the way, with an advantage of as many as 19 in the second Cumberland Bulldog Basketball 1

Brandon Springer, who posted 13 points and 10 rebounds, scored 28 in the second meeting to lead the 15th-ranked squad. The Hunters Lane HS product connected on 10 of his 13 shots and was a perfect 8-for-8 at the free throw line for Cumberland, which led wireto-wire. Springer tops in NAIA Scoring 17 points in Thursday night s win over No. 18 Union Univ., senior Brandon Springer had a streak of seven straight 20-plus point games broken. The Columbia State CC transfer s scoring average dropped to 23.6 points per game, but Springer still leads the nation in scoring by more than a full point per outing. He has scored in double figures in each of the last eight games and in all but one this year. Springer is also ranked eighth in the NAIA with 10.4 rebounds per game. Just win in 10 Since returning from Christmas break, Cumberland has won four of its six games, making January the winningest month of the season so far. CU picked up just one win in the month of November and earned two victories in December. Despite tougher competition with Tran- South Conference play beginning, the reason for the improvement can be linked to more than one point. The addition of Adam Barnett and Lindal Yarbrough have helped the team find more consistency at the guard positions. Barnett, who was ineligible for the first part of the season, has started six games and leads the team with a 1.67 assist to turnover rate. Yarbrough, who transferred from Middle Tennessee State, is the only other Bulldogs with a rate above one (1.22). Yarbrough has also been a scoring threat for CU, reaching double digits in three of his four starts. Also in the games since BY THE NUMBERS CU Stat MMC 73.4 Points Rebounds Assists Steals Blocks Field Goal Percentage Point Percentage Free Throw Percentage Turnovers 18.0 the beginning of the calendar year, Cumberland has been five percentage points better from the free throw line. However the biggest difference comes from turnovers. In six conference games, Cumberland is giving away the ball 15.7 times a game, while taking it away 18 times. In nonconference play, the Bulldogs averaged turning the ball over 4.8 times more than their opponents. TRANSOUTH STANDINGS (updated Jan. 22, 2010) Team Conf. Pct. Overall Pct. Chasing 1,000 Brandon Springer, a second-year Bulldog, currently has 869 points during his Cumberland career. With 10 games remaining in the regular season, the Columbia State CC transfer needs to put up just 13.1 points per contest, to reach the 1,000-point plateau. At his current pace, Springer will score his 1,000th point at home against Bulldog rival Trevecca Nazarene on February 13. If Springer reaches the milestone, he will become the fourth player to do so at Cumberland under head coach Lonnie Thompson. Thomas Douglas, a senior on the squad, gained entrance into the 1,000-point club last November with 17 points against Fisk Univ. Seeing double-double With 14 double-doubles on the year, including a run of six straight, senior Brandon Springer is tied for the most in the nation. During this stretch the Hunters Lane HS product is averaging 26.5 points and 12 rebounds per outing, while shooting 51 percent from the field. Springer isn t the only Bulldog producing double-doubles this year though as Walter Simon and Lamar Brinkley have three and two, respectively. Against Trevecca Nazarene last Saturday, Simon and Springer each recorded a double-double, making that mark in back-to-back games. The duo has had the achievement together in three games this year. Against Blue Mountain last Thursday, Lamar Brinkley also notched a double-double making it the first time that three Bulldogs did so in a single game this season. Media Information Bulldogs on the Radio All Bulldog basketball games may be heard on WANT FM 98.9 originating in Lebanon. Marv Dobson is in his second season as the play-byplay man for Bulldog basketball and is joined by Justin Bradford, also in his second season as color commentator. Media are invited to use the official web site for Cumberland athletics for information regarding all Bulldog athletic teams. Bulldogs face TranSouth woes With two straight TranSouth Conference wins, Cumberland has improved to 4-2 against league competition, placing the Bulldogs in fourth place in the conference. CU, which lost only three conference games a year ago, have finished with a winning record in league play for each of the last three years. Consistency in the midst of inconsistency After using seven different starting lineups this year, head coach Lonnie Thompson seems to have settled on one to make a run through conference play with Lindal Yarbrough, Adam Barnett, Andrew Ayodeji, Walter Simon and Brandon Springer starting the last three games (two wins). While the starting duties have rotated between several guards, Simon and Springer - both forwards - have been on the floor at the beginning of each of Cumberland s 19 games. Prior to the addition of Yarbrough to the active roster, Lamar Brinkley had started the first 15 contests Cumberland Bulldog Basketball 3

4 Cumberland s Lonnie Thompson begins his eighth season with the Bulldogs and his 12th as a head coach. Thompson s program has enjoyed unprecedented success, making its third NAIA National Tournament appearance last season in the last six years, the only national tournament appearances in program history. Last year s club was the first in program history to make back-to-back national tournament appearances. The Bulldogs also posted their second straight 20-plus win campaign and third in the last six seasons, all coinciding with trips to Kansas City. The Woodbury, Ga., native has posted a mark at Cumberland with one TranSouth Conference regular season championship. Thompson posted his 200th career head coach victory last season as well, February 19 at Lambuth University, in just his 11th year as a head coach. Thompson came to CU from Motlow State Community College in Tullahoma, Tenn., where he led the Bucks to back-to-back TJCCAA Eastern Division Championships. He was named TJCCAA Eastern Division Coach of the Year three times at Motlow State and was the unanimous selection for 2004 TranSouth Coach of the Year in just his second season in the conference. That season, he led the Bulldogs to the most wins in school history with a 28-6 record. The 2004 Head Coach Lonnie Thompson season also saw Thompson capture his 100th career victory as a head coach en route to leading the Bulldogs to the first TranSouth Conference Championship in school history. The program also made the school s first-ever appearance at the NAIA National Tournament in Kansas City, Mo., where they were defeated in the Round of 16. Cumberland posted a overall mark in and made its second appearance in the NAIA National Tournament, falling to Oklahoma City in the first round. Thompson has a depth of coaching experi- Thompson s Career Coaching Year-by-Year ence at all levels of college basketball, serving as an assistant coach at South Alabama, Middle Tennessee, Tennessee State, Creighton and Odessa Junior College, where he coached former NBA All-Star Larry Johnson.
