The Griffs will play the Peacocks on Friday at 7 p.m. and will host the Jaspers on Sunday at 1 p.m. GRIFFS IN CONFERENCE OPENERS 4 Canisius is all-time in conference openers, including under head coach Jim Hesch. 4 The Griffs have won their last three conference openers. Canisius defeated Manhattan, 4-2, in 2006, Niagara, 3-0, in 2007 and Rider, 3-0, last season. 4 In last year s opener, Victor Gonzalez tallied two goals, while Adam Studniarek also added a score. ON THE MARK 4 Sophomore Jason Marks has raised his level of play recently and it is translating into goals. 4 Marks has scored three goals in the Griffs last four games. 4 His goal against Robert Morris was the first of his career and he added scores against Western Michigan and Dayton. 4 The sophomore was held without a goal for the first 23 games of his career before his score against the Colonials. 4 Marks ranks second on the team in both points (six) and goals (three) in McGREAL AMONG THE MAAC BEST 4 Nine games into the 2009 season, senior Alan McGreal finds himself in a familiar position among the MAAC s best. 4 McGreal leads the Griffs with nine points on four goals and one assist this season. 4 The senior currently ranks second in the conference with 1.00 point per game and third with 0.44 goals per game. 4 McGreal led the MAAC and ranked sixth nationally last season with 0.60 assists per game. Following his junior season, McGreal ranked 10th in the country with 1.65 points per game, while also leading the conference in both points per game and assists per game and ranking third in goals. 4 Since McGreal first stepped foot on the Canisius campus in 2006, he has dominated the MAAC rankings. 4 In the last three-plus seasons, McGreal is the leader in points, goals and assists. He has recorded seven more points than the nexthighest player, one more goal and five more assists. Last year s senior class won 24 games. HOME SWEET HOME 4 Through six games during the 2009 season, the Griffs have played much better at the friendly confines of the Demske Sports Complex. 4 Canisius is at home this season, outscoring teams by an average score of The Griffs have scored in each home game in 2009 and have allowed two goals only once. 4 On the road, the Griffs are 0-5-0, losing by an average score of Since 2003, the Griffs are against MAAC foes at home (.593 winning percentage).

Canisius leads the series, which dates back to the 1990 season, Canisius has won the last two games in the series and is in the last 14 meetings with Saint Peter s. 4The Griffs have dominated the series at the Demske Sports Complex. Saint Peter s has not won in Buffalo since 1993 and is just all-time at Canisius. 4Canisius win at Saint Peter s last season was the first win for a road team in the series since In last year s 2-1 victory, the Griffs took advantage of early goals by Brian Patterson and Pablo Lopez and was able to hold off the Peacocks for the victory. 4Adam Miller stopped a career-best 10 shots to earn the victory in goal. ABOUT THE PEACOCKS 4Saint Peter s struggled through its non-conference season and is currently after a 4-1 loss to Bucknell on Tuesday. 4The Peacocks were outscored 19-4 in their first eight games of the season. Saint Peter s ranks last in the MAAC in scoring offense, averaging just 0.50 goals per game. 4Dmitri Pelts leads the team with three points on a goal and one assist. 4Carlos Suarez has started all eight games for the Peacocks, posting a goals against average of 2.40 and a save percentage of.672. CANISIUS - MANHATTAN SERIES HISTORY 4Manhattan holds a edge in a series that dates back to the 1990 season. 4Canisius is against Manhattan at the Demske Sports Complex, having won the last two home games. 4Last season, the Jaspers defeated the Griffs in overtime, 4-3, to end Canisius four-game winning streak in the series. 4Alan McGreal, Kyle Westerholt and Eddie Powell all tallied goals for the Griffs ABOUT THE JASPERS 4Manhattan enters conference play with an record. What is a Griffin? The Griffin is a mythical creature of supposed gigantic size that has the head, forelegs and wings of an eagle and the hindquarters, tail and ears of a lion. They are well known for their speed, ability to fly and having eyes like an eagle as well as the strength and courage of a lion. They are thought to be from India, where the natives of the land made their talons and claws into drinking cups because the talon of a Griffin was said to detect poison in a liquid. Griffins would find gold in the mountains and line their nests with it and as a result, were forced to become great guardians of the nests to keep the hunters away.

3 McGREAL ADDS TO SCHOOL RECORD 4 After setting the school s career scoring record, senior Alan McGreal has no plans of stopping. 4 McGreal, the school s all-time leading scorer, has posted a team-best nine points and four goals in The senior ranks second in the MAAC in points per game and third in goals. 4 McGreal owns the school record with 84 career points. He set the program s record on Sept. 11 against Cornell. He now has nine more points than Gianfranco Gallo s 75 points. 4 The Dublin, Ireland native also ranks second in school history with 29 career goals (five shy of the record) and is tied for second with 26 career assists (two shy of the record). The seven countries represented by the Griffs this season are: 4 Canada (Casper Rej-Kleczek) 4 England (Adam Kingston) 4 France (Sam Zarka) 4 Ireland (Jason Marks, Alan McGreal) 4 New Zealand (Sam Margetts, Regan Steele) 4 Poland (Adam Studniarek) 4 Venezuela (Victor Gonzalez) 4 International players have accounted for 88.9 percent of the team s goals (8-of-9) and all five of the team s assists. 4 All nine international players have started at least one game for the Griffs this season. 4 In addition, Canisius assistant coach and former Griffs standout, Adam Reekie, is a native of England. THREE RECORD COLLEGIATE FIRST 4 In the Griffs first victory of the season against Robert Morris, three players scored their first collegiate goal in the 4-1 win. 4 Sophomore Jason Marks and freshmen Ian Buzzio and Sam Zarka all netted their first career goal. Zarka, who tallied the game-winning goal, also added his first collegiate assist for a teambest three points. 4 In addition to the three goal scorers, freshman Regan Steele assisted on Marks score for his first collegiate point. 4 The freshman class has accounted for 22.2 percent of the team s goals (2-of-9) and 60 percent of the team s assists (3-of-5). SENIOR DEFENSE 4 The Griffs defensive unit is hoping that experience matters in The Canisius defensive unit returns three senior starters in Mike Globits, Adam Studniarek and Sean Vella in addition to Kyle Westerholt, who is a senior academically and was named to the MAAC All-Rookie Team last year. Vella was a second-team All-MAAC selection in The four returning players have appeared in a total of 196 games, including 161 starting assignments. McGREAL EARNS PRESEASON ALL-MAAC HONORS 4Senior Alan McGreal earned All-MAAC Preseason Team honors, voted on by the league s coaches. 4McGreal totaled 26 points on seven goals and 12 assists in 2008, earning All-MAAC accolades for the third time in his career. 4The Dublin, Ireland native ranked first in the conference and sixth nationally with 0.60 assists per game in As a team, the Griffs were selected to finish seventh in the preseason coaches poll. McGREAL AND VELLA NAMED TEAM CAPTAINS 4Seniors Alan McGreal and Sean Vella will serve as team captains during the 2009 season. 4McGreal ranks first in school history with 84 career points, second with 29 career goals and second with 26 career assists. 4Vella has appeared in 56 games on defense, totaling five goals. 4McGreal and Vella have earned All-MAAC honors a total of four times in their careers. Both players were also named to the All-MAAC Rookie Team in 2006, while McGreal was named the conference s Rookie of the Year. 4 Jim Hesch Head Coach Ninth Season / MAAC The winningest coach in school history, Jim Hesch is in his ninth season at the helm of the Canisius College men s soccer team. During his tenure, the Golden Griffin soccer program has seen steady signs of improvement, capped by eight overall wins and five conference victories in 2007, the most in the program s Division I history. Canisius has won 15 games in the last two seasons, the most in any two-year span during the school s history. The third-longest tenured head coach in the MAAC, Hesch became the program s winningest coach when the Golden Griffins defeated Marist by a score of 3-2 at home Oct. 12, The 2007 season also saw Canisius win the second MAAC Tournament game in school history as the Blue and Gold advanced to the conference tournament s semifinal round for the second time in school history. Individual accolades have become common under Hesch during the past eight seasons. He has guided eight players to be named to the All-MAAC Team. In addition, Fabien Lewis was named the league s Co-Defensive Player of the Year in 2003, while Alan McGreal earned the conference s Rookie of the Year award in 2006 and has earned all-conference honors in each of his three seasons. In addition, two MAAC New York Lottery Men s Soccer Scholar Athletes of the Year came from Canisius as Anthony Palmiero earned the honor in 2003 and Brian Brehm won the award in The Syracuse, N.Y., native played in the National Professional Indoor Soccer League from , which included a stint with the Buffalo Blizzard from In 2000, Hesch played in 38 games and tallied 21 goals and 14 assists. He played with the Harrisburg Heat from and was named an NPSL All-Star in the season after posting 119 points, the eighth-best single-season total in Heat history. In 2002, Hesch captured a Major Indoor Soccer League Championship as a member of the Philadelphia Kixx, tallying 36 points in 28 games. As a collegiate player, Hesch won a national championship with Southern Connecticut University in 1990 before transferring to Cortland State, where he played from and was named a first-team All-American. He earned his bachelor s degree in physical education in He owns a USSF A coaching license and is the president of the newly-formed Black Watch - New York West Premiere Soccer Club. Hesch and his wife, Linda, reside in Amherst with their daughter, Ryan, and son, Connor. Jim s brother, Dave Hesch, is the associate head coach at cross-town rival the University at Buffalo.
