2 Season Notebook Sweet Ending Rohan Davey's career couldn't have ended any sweeter. After spending the better part of four years as a backup quarterback, Davey shined in his senior season, breaking several school records in leading the Tigers to the SEC title and a Sugar Bowl victory avey may have saved his best performance for last as he connected on 31 of 53 passes for a Sugar DBowl record 444 yards and three TDs in leading the Tigers to a win over Big Ten champion and seventhranked Illinois on NewYear s Day. The victory over the Illini marked LSU s first in a New Year s Day bowl since defeating Wyoming in the 1968 Sugar Bowl. The win put an exclamation mark on an outstanding season for the Tigers,one that saw LSU battle back from an 0-2 league start to capture the SEC Western Division title before a school-record crowd of 92,141 against Auburn on Dec.1. A week later, with both Davey and LaBrandon Toefield out with injuries,seldom-used quarterback Matt Mauck came off the bench to spark the Tigers to a upset over No.2-ranked Tennessee to capture the SEC title.the win gave the Tigers their eighth SEC title and the first outright crown for LSU since It also put the Tigers in the Sugar Bowl and knocked Tennessee out of the national title game.more importantly, though,it marked LSU s return to football GLORY! Josh Reed Wins Biletnikoff Award Josh Reed went out in style as the junior from Rayne, La., won the Biletnikoff Award as the nation s best receiver after catching an LSU record 94 passes for an SEC record 1,740 yards in 2001.Reed,a consensus All-American, capped his record-setting season by setting a pair of Sugar Bowl records with 14 receptions for 239 yards and a pair of touchdowns in LSU s victory over No.7 Illinois. For his career, Reed caught 167 passes and set an SEC record with 3,001 yards.reed,who was drafted in the second round of the 2002 NFL Draft by the Buffalo Bills, caught 17 TD passes for his career. The Toe Truck It was a given in 2001 that when LSU got the ball inside the 10-yard line running back LaBrandon Toefield was going to get the ball.the fans knew, even LSU s opponents knew it.but it didn t matter as Toefield was unstoppable around the goal line as he tied an SEC record with 19 rushing TDs during LSU s 10-3 season. Toefield may have scored more points, but he was sidelined with a knee injury in the first half of the SEC Championship game. For the year, Toefield rushed for 992 yards and led the SEC in scoring with 114 points. Rodney Reed Named Second-Team Academic All-American Rodney Reed,a starter in all 13 games for the Tigers in 2001, was named to the Verizon Academic All-America Second Team.Reed,who was named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll for the second consecutive season,posted a 3.9 grade point average in accounting.
