What s Ahead The Runnin Utes open their regular season against Stony Brook on Friday, Nov. 19 at 8:05 p.m. in the Huntsman Center. Utah then plays in the Great Alaska Shootout, Nov , in Anchorage. Who s Back First year head coach Ray Giacoletti has three returning starters and five other lettermen on his roster. Last season, Utah went 24-9 overall and placed third in the Mountain West Conference during the regular season with a 9-5 record. Utah won the Mountain West Conference Tournament title and received the league s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The only senior on the roster is guard Marc Jackson (6-1, 175), who is back with the Utes after taking off last season. Jackson earned second team all-mountain West Conference honors as a sophomore in He averaged 9.3 points, 2.8 assists and 2.3 rebounds in 22.0 minutes per game as a nonstarter. Jackson also shot 44.8 percent from three-point range and 84.2 percent from the free throw line in 29 games, missing four because of an ankle injury. Sophomore forward/center Andrew Bogut (7-0, 240), the Mountain West Conference Freshman of the Year and a second team all-league pick, is one of the three returning starters. Bogut was second on the team in scoring (12.5 ppg), and first in both rebounding (9.9 rpg) and blocked shots (44) last season. The native of Melbourne, Australia, had 14 double-doubles on the year and shot 57.7 percent from the field. Junior forward Richard Chaney (6-4, 195) started 31 of 33 games last season. The Los Angeles, Calif., native was third on the team in scoring (9.5 ppg), shooting 49.4 percent from the field, 41.5 percent from three-point range and 82.2 percent at the line. Junior Tim Drisdom (6-3, 210) has started all but one game the last two years at point guard. The Artesia, Calif., native led the Utes in assists (3.6 apg) and steals (35) last season. He also averaged 6.1 points, shooting 34.0 percent from three-point range and 78.9 percent from the free throw line, and 3.7 rebounds. For Release: November 10, 2004

Please check with Mike Lageschulte of the SID office to confirm practice times and locations. Weekly Interviews Requests for interviews with head coach Ray Giacoletti and Utah players should be made through Associate Sports Information Director Mike Lageschulte or the basketball office. Coach Giacoletti and the players will be available for interviews 30 minutes before the start of practice. The media availability period will run 25 minutes. Feature-length interviews will be scheduled for another time. Postgame Interviews The Utah lockerroom is closed to the media. During games at the Huntsman Center, a member of the Utah sports information staff will collect player interview requests during the final media timeout of the second half. Following the NCAA required 10- minute cooling-off period, head coach Ray Giacoletti will address the media in the squad room, immediately inside the north tunnel and to the right. Ute players will all be made available in the squad room following Giacoletti. On the road, interviews will be conducted outside of the locker room unless an interview area is provided. Interviews will start 30 minutes before practice. The Utes also return four other lettermen from last season. Sophomore forward Justin Hawkins (6-5, 220) was the Utes most productive player off the bench, averaging 19.0 minutes in 32 games. Hawkins, a native of Anaheim, Calif., who also started three games in , averaged 5.3 points and 3.2 rebounds. Junior center Chris Jackson (6-11, 245) missed the final 10 games of last season after having surgery to repair a herniated disk in his back on Feb. 25. The Los Alamos, N.M., native is close to full strength as practice begins. Jackson played in 20 games last season, averaging 3.4 points and 2.6 rebounds in 12.5 minutes. He made 70.5 percent of his field goal attempts. Junior forward Bryant Markson (6-6, 190) played in 32 games with two starts last season. Markson, from Monrovia, Calif., averaged 2.2 points and 1.7 rebounds in 12.0 minutes per game. Sophomore forward Jonas Langvad (6-9, 230), who came to the U. from Skovlunde, Denmark, averaged 1.6 points and 1.8 rebounds while appearing in eight games. Who s New Three scholarship freshmen and two non-scholarship players have joined the Utes. Point guard Jermaine Calvin (5-9, 177) from Tempe, Ariz., and forward Jake Schmidt (6-7, 247) from Thermopolis, Wyo., signed letters of intent with Utah during the early signing period. Center Luke Nevill (7-0, 240) from Perth, Australia, signed with the Utes during the late signing period. Joining the team as non-scholarship players this season are junior guard Casey Iverson (6-1, 190) and freshman forward Austin Robison (6-6, 185). Calvin earned first team all-state honors as a senior and second team all-state recognition as a junior. In , Calvin averaged 20.0 points, 6.5 rebounds and 9.1 assists per game while leading McClintock High School to a state runner-up finish. Schmidt was the Gatorade Player of the Year in Wyoming. While leading Hot Springs County High School to the state championship for the second year in a row, Schmidt was an all-state and East 3A all-conference selection. He averaged 17.4 points, 12.7 rebounds, 5.3 blocked shots, 2.6 assists and 1.4 steals per game as a senior. Nevill lived in Marietta, Ga., last year as an exchange student. While playing for Kell High School, Nevill averaged 17.6 points, 8.9 rebounds, 3.7 blocked shots and 2.5 assists per game. He shot 70 percent from floor and 68 percent at the free throw line. Nevill earned honorable mention all-state and second team all-region honors. Iverson was an honorable mention all-conference selection at the College of Eastern Utah in , averaging 12.0 points, 2.0 assists, 2.0 rebounds and 1.0 steals per game. Robison was a Salt Lake Tribune first team all-state performer as a senior at Jordan High School (Utah). He averaged 18.2 points, 8.6 rebounds, 2.2 assists, 2.9 blocked shots and 2.6 steals per game in Scouting Western State College The Mountaineers, an NCAA Division II program, open their exhibition season on Nov. 11 at Southern Utah before facing the Utes on Saturday. Western State College is located in Gunnison, Colo., with an enrollment of 2,400. Western State returns two starters and six lettermen from last year s team that went 2-25 and placed seventh in the West Division of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. Senior guard Ryan Jobe (6-10, 160) averaged 9.5 points and 3.1 assists per game last season. Junior forward Dusty Axtell (6-4, 215) averaged 7.9 points and 3.7 boards per game in Al Sokaitis is in his first year at Western State and has a career record in 17 years. From The Training Room Junior guard Tim Drisdom sprained his right ankle during the team s Night with the Utes scrimmage on Oct. 28. He has not been progressing as well as hoped and had an MRI on Wednesday. Drisdom is doubtful for the exhibition game against Western State College on Saturday. Sophomore forward Justin Hawkins missed two days of practice early this week with a stomach virus. He is expected to play against Western State College on Saturday. Nevill Redshirting Freshman center Luke Nevill, a native of Perth, Australia, is expected to redshirt this season. He did not suit up for the Utes first exhibition game against Carroll College. Ray Giacoletti has been impressed with Nevill in practice and had a difficult time making the decision. But, Nevill was not projected to play a lot of minutes this season, and it was determined best to save the year of eligibility. He s only played four years, said Giacoletti. He has the chance to be real good. Exhibition Game #1 Rewind Sophomore forward Andrew Bogut had a double-double of 19 points and 12 rebounds to lead Utah to an win over Carroll College in the Utes exhibition season opener last Saturday. It was Ray Giacoletti s first game as Utah s head coach. Four Utes scored in double figures. Senior guard Marc Jackson had 18 points and three assists. 2 Utah Basketball
3 Richard Chaney, a junior from Los Angeles, had 16 points while making both three-point attempts. Junior forward Bryant Markson elevated for a couple of impressive dunks en route to scoring 15 points in a starting role. Carroll College, an NAIA school in Helena, Mont., had a 5-0 record entering the game. But the Fighting Saints had a tough time in hanging with the Utes, picked second in the Mountain West Conference preseason poll. Utah shot 69 percent from the field and 67 percent (8-of-12) from three-point range. The Utes also connected on 10-of-13 free throws (77 percent) and had a advantage on the boards. Andy Brown paced the Fighting Saints with 15 points. Dallas Leslie came off the bench to hit 4-of- 5 three-pointers and contribute 14 points. Holding a 5-4 lead just over two minutes into the game, Utah went on a 13-2 run over the next four minutes to pull ahead 18-6 with 13:47 remaining in the first half. The run included three-pointers by Markson, Chaney and Jackson. The Utes stretched their lead to 18 points inside the final six minutes of the half. Utah went on an 11-2 run to take a lead with 3:18 to play in the first half. Bogut had six points during that stretch by making a pair of free throws, following up a missed jumper by Chaney, and throwing down a dunk. Utes Receiving Votes In ESPN/USA Today Preseason Poll Utah received six votes to rank 34th in the ESPN/USA Today Top 25 Preseason Poll. Washington, Utah s first round opponent in the Great Alaska Shootout, is ranked 24th. Two other teams in the Great Alaska Shootout field, Alabama and Oklahoma, are ranked 18th and 30th, respectively. Arizona, which will host the Utes in Tucson, Ariz., on Dec. 11, is ranked 11th. UNLV of the Mountain West Conference is receiving nine votes to rank 33rd. They ve Got The License To Shoot Want to have the go-ahead to shoot a three-pointer if you play for the Utes? You have to earn your license first. A Ute player earns his License to Shoot from the coaching staff by making 35 of 50 threepointers from all over the floor during a drill that can be attempted once a day. It must be completed five times before the season. Utes who have earned their License to Shoot for this season are Andrew Bogut, Richard Chaney, Tim Drisdom, Casey Iverson, Justin Hawkins, Marc Jackson, Jonas Langvad and Bryant Markson. Runnin Utes Second In MWC Preseason Poll Utah was placed second in the Mountain West Conference preseason media poll. Runnin Ute sophomore center/forward Andrew Bogut was named to the preseason all-mwc team. The league media selected UNLV to claim the Mountain West Conference title, marking the first time the Runnin Rebels were picked first in the MWC preseason poll. UNLV tallied 182 total points and 14 of 25 first-place votes. Utah, the defending MWC Tournament champion, earned seven first-place votes and finished second in the poll with 169 points. Defending MWC regular season champion Air Force came in third its highest-ever pick in the MWC poll with 142 points and four first-place votes. New Mexico placed fourth with 122 points, followed by BYU (92), Colorado State (87), San Diego State (71) and Wyoming (35). Boasting Of Bogut Sophomore forward Andrew Bogut (7-0, 240) has been named the 2004 John R. Wooden Preseason All-America Team. Last season, was honored as the Mountain West Conference Freshman of the Year, second team all-mwc and second team All-District 13 by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC). He also made the CollegeInsider.com all-freshman team. Bogut was second on the team in scoring (12.5 ppg), and first in both rebounding (9.9 rpg) and blocked shots (44) last season. The Melbourne native started for the Australian National Team in the Summer Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. Bogut averaged 14.8 points and 8.8 rebounds in five games for the Boomers. At the end of the preliminary rounds, Bogut ranked fourth in the tournament in rebounds (8.8 rpg), fifth in blocked shots (1.2 bpg) and fourth in field goal percentage (58.0). In the summer of 2003, he led Australia to the FIBA Junior World Championships title, earning tournament MVP honors. In the final NCAA statistical rankings, Bogut was 21st in field goal percentage (57.7) and 15th in rebounds per game (9.9). Bogut had 14 double-doubles last season including six in 14 regular-season conference games. Bogut broke the Mountain West freshman record of eight double-doubles set by Tom Bellairs of Air Force in Bogut s last double-double was against UNLV in the MWC Tournament championship game with 17 points (5-11 FG, 7-7 FT) and 14 rebounds in 35 minutes. Bogut had 22 double-figure scoring games and 18 double-figure rebound games. He also scored 20 points three times. On the Ute freshman charts, Bogut ranked second in points (411), third in scoring average (12.5 ppg), second in rebounds (326), second in rebounding average (9.9 rpg), first in field goals made (168), fourth in field goals attempted (291), third in field goal percentage (57.7), tied for fifth in free throws made (71), fifth in free throws attempted (111) and first in blocked shots (44). The U. enters the year ranking 10th in the NCAA in all-time winning percentage with a.660 mark. Utah also ranks tied for 11th in the NCAA in all-time wins, and is one of just 13 schools to have 1,500 victories at the start of the season. The Utes have won three national championships, winning the 1916 AAU championship, 1944 NCAA championship and 1947 NIT title. Utah is one of only 33 schools to win the NCAA Division I men s basketball title. Utah has made four trips to the NCAA Final Four: 1944 (champions), 1961 (4th), 1966 (4th) and 1998 (runner-up). Only 14 teams have more Final Four appearances than Utah. The Utes have played in the NCAA Tournament 25 times and have a record (.541). Bogut ranked second on the team with 73 assists (2.2 apg) last season and had a career-best five assists in five games last season. Jackson Back In Action Senior guard Marc Jackson (6-1, 175) returns to the team for his senior year after electing to take off the season. The Salt Lake City native started his career at Utah as a freshman in before leaving on an LDS Church mission. After returning early, Jackson rejoined the team for his sophomore campaign in Jackson was named second team all-mountain West Conference in He was fourth on the team in scoring (9.3 ppg), playing in 29 games off the bench and averaging 22.0 minutes. On the year, Jackson reached 20 points in three games and scored in double figures 13 times. Jackson ranked second in the Mountain West in three-point percentage (44.8), second in free throw percentage (84.2) and ninth in assists (2.76 apg) in He improved his play during the conference season after working his way back from an ankle injury that forced him to sit out four of the first 11 games. In league play, Jackson ranked 15th in the MWC scoring (13.4 ppg), third in three-point percentage (47.7) by hitting 21-of-44, second in assists (3.43 apg) and fourth in assists/turnover ratio (1.60). Jackson established his career high with 21 points in 25 minutes at UNLV (Jan. 20, 2003). He then equalled his career-high with 21 points in 30 minutes at Wyoming (Feb. 10, 2003). Chatter About Chaney Junior Richard Chaney (6-4, 195) is the returning starter at small forward. Last season, he was Utah s third-best scorer, averaging 9.5 points a game and reaching the 20-point mark three times. He also shot 49.4 percent from the field and 41.5 percent (34-for-82) from three-point range. Chaney scored in double figures 13 times in , bringing his career total to 19 games. Chaney was named to the 2004 Mountain West Conference all-tournament team, playing some of his best basketball of the season over the three games. Chaney averaged 12.7 points and 5.0 rebounds in 30.7 minutes per game. He shot 48.3 percent from the field, 44.4 percent (4-for-9) from three-point range and 6-for-6 at the free throw line. Chaney also had four assists, four blocked shots and three steals. Against Pepperdine on Jan. 5, Chaney had a career-high 27 points. He made 10-of-16 field goals and 5-of-7 three-pointers in 31 minutes. Chaney also set a career-best mark for threes made against Pepperdine. The Los Angeles native has three 20-point games in his career, all coming last season. Data On Drisdom Junior Tim Drisdom (6-3, 210) has been the Utes starter at point guard the last two seasons, in the lineup for 55 games. Last season, Drisdom averaged 5.9 points and 3.6 assists per game. After averaging 4.7 points, 3.3 rebounds and 4.0 assists over the 15 regular-season nonconference games, Drisdom comparatively put up 7.9 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.1 assists in 28.6 minutes in 14 league contests. His improved scoring average was fostered by shooting percentages of 37.0 (10-of-27) from three-point range and 88.2 (45-of-51) from the free throw line. Drisdom was a catalyst to the Ute offense during the Mountain West Conference Tournament. During the three games, Drisdom had 14 assists and only five turnovers for a 2.8 assist/turnover ratio. In the final two games, he dished out 12 assists and had just two turnovers, including a stellar seven-assist, no-turnover performance against BYU in the semifinals. He also had six steals and averaged 3.3 rebounds in 32.7 minutes per game in the tournament. The Artesia, Calif., native s signature game of the season was a career-high 24 points at Colorado State on Feb. 14, when he shot 6-of-10 from the floor, 4-of-6 from beyond the arc and 8-of-8 at free throw line. Drisdom also had four assists, one turnover, one steal and four rebounds in 34 minutes. Utes Own Share Of Nation's Best Conference Championship Run Utah lays claim to one of the nation s best conference championship runs over the past 14 seasons. The Utes have won 10 regular-season conference titles during that period. Cincinnati (Conference USA) and Kentucky (SEC) won regular-season titles in their respective leagues last season to draw even with Utah for the top mark. Utah has won a piece of the regular season title three times in the five-year history of the Mountain West Conference, including the first two years to continue a string of seven straight regular-season league 4 Utah Basketball
5 titles. The Utes went 10-4 in conference play in to share the inaugural Mountain West Conference championship with UNLV. Utah also went 10-4 in to split the title with Brigham Young and Wyoming. Utah went 11-3 to share the Mountain West Conference title with BYU in and posted its best record in five years as a league member. Utes Reach 20-Wins Mark Once Again In Utah hit the 20-wins mark for the third consecutive season and for the 12th time in the last 15 years with a 24-9 record in A rundown of the Utes 20-win seasons since the beginning of the 90s: (30-4), (24-11), (24-7), (28-6), (27-7), (29-4), (30-4), (28-5), (23-9), (21-9), (25-8), (24-9). Getting Defensive One of the trademarks of Utah basketball in recent years has been a stifling half-court defense. Since the season, Utah has finished in the top 30 in the nation 12 times in scoring defense, 10 times in rebound margin, eight times in field goal percentage defense and eight times in scoring margin. In the final NCAA statistical rankings, Utah ranked fifth in the in scoring defense (57.4 ppg) and fifth in rebound margin (+7.4 rpg). The Utes outrebounded 30 of 33 opponents last season and were 24-6 when they had the advantage on the boards. Utah outrebounded 22 of its last 23 opponents. The only exception was Wyoming, which posted a advantage on the Utes on Feb. 16. The Utes went on to out-board their last eight opponents. Only 14 of 33 teams reached 60 points against the Utes and 10 opponents were held to under 50 points last season. Utah has not allowed an opponent to score 80 points in 128 consecutive games that have ended in regulation. The last team to score 80 points on the Utes in a 40-minute game was Wyoming (88) on Feb. 28, 2000 in Laramie, Wyo. From Beyond The Arc Utah ranked 21st in the NCAA in three-point field goal percentage (38.7) in That accuracy also helped the Utes rank 30th in the nation in field goal percentage (47.1) last season. The Utes have ranked in the top 35 in the nation in three-point percentage four times in the last five years. Their best mark during that time was 40.5 percent to rank eighth in the NCAA in Utah made a three-pointer in each of the last 32 games. The Utes had made a three-pointer in 152 consecutive games before going 0-for-8 against Georgia State in a win on Nov. 17. The last time Utah didn t make a three before then was during an 0-for-12 outing at Long Beach State on Dec. 5, Utes Tough At Home In The Huntsman Center Utah is (.917) in the Huntsman Center over the last 15 seasons and has never lost back-to-back home games. The Utes have captured 32 of their last 34 games at home with their only two losses coming to Colorado State on March 6, 2003, ending a 16-game home winning streak, and a loss to Air Force on Feb. 21, terminating a string of 15 consecutive home wins. The Utes have won 148 of their last 159 games in the Jon M. Huntsman Center, dating back to the season. In conference home games over the last 10 years, Utah is 71-4 (.947). That mark ranks second-best in the nation over that period to Kansas, which is 74-4 (.949). Utah has won 24 consecutive nonconference games in the Huntsman Center, last falling to Utah State (78-65) on Nov. 23, Before its loss to Air Force on Feb. 21, 2004, Utah had won 15 in a row at home, which was tied for the ninth-longest homecourt winning streak in the nation. Utah bounced back with a win over New Mexico in its final regularseason home game to go 15-1 in the Huntsman Center last season. 5
