FIRST-AND-10 (what you need to know about the MSU-Northwestern matchup) Saturday s game marks the 51st meeting between Michigan State and Northwestern. The Spartans lead the all-time series 34-16, including a record in games played in Evanston, Ill. Michigan State has won two in a row and three of the last four meetings. The Spartans have recorded victories in three of their last four trips to Ryan Field (34-0 in 1999, in 2006 and in 2008). Northwestern s last win in the series came on Oct. 6, 2007, 48-41, in overtime. With its 26-6 Homecoming victory over Illinois, Michigan State improved to 7-0 for the fi rst time since 1966 when the Spartans won their fi rst nine game en route to a record (10-10 tie against Notre Dame in the Game of the Century ) and a share of the National Championship. It marks the sixth time in school history MSU has started the season 7-0 (1913, 1951, 1952, 1965, 1966 and 2010). Michigan State is ranked No. 8 in the latest Associated Press and USA TODAY Polls. It marks MSU s fi rst appearance in the Top 10 since Oct. 26, 2003 (AP No. 9, USA Today No. 10). The Spartans are ranked No. 7 in the fi rst Bowl Championship Series Standings, released Sunday, Oc. 17. It marks MSU s highest ranking ever in the BCS Standings (No. 9 in 1999 Final BCS Standings). Michigan State ranks among the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision leaders in takeaways (tied for seventh with 18), tunover margin (ninth at per game), pass effi ciency defense (No. 17 with a rating), scoring defense (No. 17 allowing 16.6 points per game) and total defense (No. 28 allowing yards per game). The Spartans totaled only 14 takeaways during the entire 2009 season. Michigan State s secondary has recorded three interceptions in each of the last two games (Michigan and Illinois). After intercepting six passes all of last season, the Spartan defense has picked off 12 passes in the fi rst seven games of The 12 interceptions are tied for third in the NCAA FBS. Michigan State senior linebacker Greg Jones, who posted a season-high 14 stops in a 26-6 Homecoming victory over Illinois, has been named National Defensive Player of the Week by the Walter Camp Football Foundation as well as Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week. The 6-foot-1, 240-pound Jones recorded double-fi gure tackles for the second time this season and for the 20th time his career. He also was credited with a pass break-up and a quarterback hurry. Jones has led the team in tackles in 27 of the last 33 games. MSU limited the Illini to 114 rushing yards yards below its season average. Trailing 6-3 at halftime, the Spartan defense shut out the Illini in the second half while forcing three turnovers (four takeaways in the game). It marked the fi rst time since a 31-3 win over Indiana on Oct. 4, 2003, that MSU didn t allow a touchdown in a Big Ten game. Michigan State ranks fourth in the Big Ten and No. 26 in the NCAA FBS in rushing offense, averaging yards per game. Sophomore Edwin Baker (100.9 yards per game) and freshman Le Veon Bell (80.3 ypg.) rank fi fth and sixth, respectively, in the Big Ten in rushing). Baker

Under head coach Mark Dantonio, MSU is 13-2 in games it gains 200-plus yards rushing, including a perfect 5-0 in Sophomore Dan Conroy, accounted for a career-best 14 points against Illinois, has been selected as National Placekicker of the Week by College Football Performance Awards. The 5-10, 185-pound Conroy made a career-best four fi eld goals, hitting from 37, 34, 32 and 18 yards. In addition, he has been named as one of the Lou Groza Award s Top Three Stars of the Week. Conroy remains perfect on the season, hitting his fi rst 13 fi eld-goal attempts. That s the best start by a placekicker in MSU history, breaking the mark previously held by Paul Edinger who made his fi rst 10 fi eld-goal attempts in Conroy, who hit his only fi eld-goal attempt of the 2009 season in the opener against Montana State, is 14-for-14 in his career (school record for consecutive fi eld goals: 15 by Brett Swenson in 2008). Red-shirt freshman Kevin Muma, who averaged 68.6 yards on seven kickoffs including a careerbest four touchbacks, has been named CFPA National Kickoff Specialist of the Week. UPON FURTHER REVIEW With consecutive wins over No. 11 Wisconsin and No. 18 Michigan, Michigan State defeated ranked teams on back-to-back Saturdays for the fi rst time since 1974 (Nov. 2 vs. No. 20 Wisconsin; Nov. 9 vs. No. 1 Ohio State). It also marked the fi rst time MSU defeated ranked teams in back-to-back games since the 1999 season (Nov. 20 vs. No. 13 Penn State and Jan. 1, 2000, vs. No. 10 Florida). Michigan State scored at least 30 points in its fi rst six games for the fi rst time in school history. Senior linebackers Greg Jones and Eric Gordon have combined for 704 career tackles - the most by any active linebacker duo in the NCAA FBS (Connecticut s Lawrence Wilson and Scott Lutrus rank second with 683 combined stops). Junior quarterback Kirk Cousins recorded his fi fth-straight 200-yard passing game, completing 13-of-24 passes for 201 yards and one score in MSU s 26-6 Homecoming victory over Illinois. His 48-yard touchdown strike to B.J. Cunningham gave MSU its fi rst lead at 13-6 with 8:26 left in the third quarter. Over the last fi ve games, he has completed 69 percent (90-of-131) of his passes for 1,289 yards, nine scores and three interceptions. Cousins has recorded at least one TD pass in 14 consecutive games (school record: 16 by Drew Stanton, ). Michigan State s receiving corps features two career 1,000-yard receivers: senior Mark Dell (104 for 1,759) and junior B.J. Cunningham (114 for 1,507). That duo has combined for 218 receptions, 3,266 yards and 16 career touchdowns. Dell s career 16.9 yards per catch ranks fi fth among all active NCAA FBS receivers. Senior Aaron Bates currently ranks second in the Big Ten and No. 11 in the NCAA in punting with his 45.5-yard average. Bates is listed among MSU s all-time leaders in punting yards (fourth at 9,526), punts (fourth at 229) and punting average (seventh at 41.6). He has placed 74 of his 229 career punts (32 percent) inside the opponent s 20-yard line. Bates ranks second in punts and third in punting yards among all active NCAA FBS punters. THE LAST MEETING Oct. 17, 2009, in East Lansing, Mich.: Kirk Cousins threw two touchdown passes to Blair White in the third quarter to spark Michigan State to a victory over Northwestern. The Spartans trailed 7-0 at halftime but rallied against the Wildcats. Northwestern had won three consecutive Big Ten road games and two straight in East Lansing, but the Cousins-to-White connection wore down the Wildcats. Cousins hit a wide-open White for a 47-yard touchdown strike to give the Spartans a 14-7 lead with 5:13 left in the third quarter. White fi nished with 12 catches for 186 yards and two TDs. Cousins was 21 of 31 for 281 yards. Northwestern quarterback Mike Kafka completed 34-of-47 passes for 291 yards and two TDs. Wildcats receiver Zeke Markshausen had 16 catches for 111 yards and a touchdown. Trailing 7-0 and looking sluggish, Michigan State grabbed the momentum by forcing a turnover early in the second half. Spartans defensive back Chris L. Rucker forced Drake Dunsmore to fumble, and linebacker Adam Decker recovered the loose ball at the Michigan State 36. The Spartans capitalized with a 64-yard touchdown drive, capped by a 22-yard pass from Cousins to White to tie the score 7-7. Cousins second TD to White came later in the quarter. Brett Swenson added a fi eld goal as the third quarter expired to put Michigan State ahead Northwestern s Jeravin Matthews fumbled the next kickoff and it was recovered by the Spartans, giving Michigan State good fi eld position to start the fourth quarter. Larry Caper s 22-yard TD run gave the Spartans a 24-7 lead. Kafka s 1-yard touchdown pass to Markshausen cut the defi cit to with 10:28 remaining, but Michigan State s defense held the Wildcats scoreless the rest of the way. Northwestern s defense shone early with a goal-line stand on the game s fi rst possession. The Wildcats stopped Cousins on a fourth-and-inches sneak to keep the contest scoreless. Wildcats linebacker Quentin Davie ended another Michigan State drive by recovering Edwin Baker s fumble at the NU 20 late in the fi rst half, preserving Northwestern s 7-0 halftime lead. Northwestern used its no-huddle, quick-pass attack to grab a 7-0 lead midway through the second quarter. Kafka capped a methodical 80-yard, nine-play drive with a 15-yard TD strike to Andrew Brewer. THE LAST MEETING AT RYAN FIELD Oct. 11, 2008, in Evanston, Ill.: Javon Ringer rushed 35 times for 124 yards and two touchdowns as No. 23 Michigan State cruised to a win over previously unbeaten Northwestern. Michigan State scored 17 straight points in the fi rst quarter with the help of a pair of Northwestern turnovers, and never looked back. The 5-foot-9, 202-pound Ringer had his fi fth 100-yard game of the season and went over 1,000 yards for the second straight year. Already leading 7-0 on Brian Hoyer s 3-yard scoring pass to Garrett Celek, the Spartans started their next two possessions in Northwestern territory thanks to turnovers. After Sherrick McManis fumbled a kickoff at his 25-yard line, Michigan State got a 26-yard fi eld goal from Brett Swenson. Michigan State safety Danny Fortener picked off C.J. Bacher on the Wildcats next drive, returning it 21 yards to Northwestern s 34. Four plays later, Ringer bounced outside and scored from 13 yards out to make it 17-0 with 2:34 to play in the quarter. Hoyer threw two short touchdown passes and was 14-of-20 for 169 yards. Tyrell Sutton ripped off a career-high 66-yard run in Northwestern s fi rst drive of the second half. Bacher then hit Rasheed Ward for a 6-yard touchdown pass to make it The Wildcats tried an onside kick, but were penalized for interference. That gave the Spartans the ball on the 32. Hoyer connected with Andrew Hawken on a 21-yard pass and Ringer ended the drive with a 1-yard touchdown run to keep Michigan State s lead safe. Swenson set a school record with the second of his three fi eld goals. His 42-yard kick in the third was his 14th consecutive fi eld goal, breaking Paul Edinger s 1998 record. Cornerback Johnny Adams picked Bacher off in the end zone with the Wildcats trailing 17-7 in the second quarter. The Spartans drove 80 yards in 3:03 to go up 24-7 just before the half ended. MSU/NORTHWESTERN COACHING CONNECTIONS Michigan State head coach Mark Dantonio and Northwestern defensive coordinator Mike Hankwitz spent the 1981 season together at Purdue, working under Jim Young. Dantonio served as a graduate assistant, while Hankwitz coached the outside linebackers. 5 MSU/NORTHWESTERN CONNECTIONS, PART II Michigan State football video coordinator Matt Harper spent six seasons in a similar position at Northwestern ( and ). Northwestern associate athletics director/head athletic trainer Tory Lindley earned his bachelor s degree from Michigan State in Lindley later spent four years as an assistant trainer at Michigan State ( ). TRAVIS KEY NAMED HONORARY CAPTAIN Former Michigan State safety Travis Key, who served as one of four captains for head coach Mark Dantonio s fi rst season in 2007, has been selected honorary captain for Saturday s game at Northwestern. He will address the team during the pre-game meal and join the 2010 captains at midfi eld for the coin toss. A four-year letterman from , Key began his career as a walk-on before earning a scholarship as a sophomore. The 5-foot-10, 185-pound Key fi nished sixth on the team with 42 tackles, with 3.5 resulting in losses including a 10-yard sack, as a junior in His fi rst career interception came at Northwestern in 2006 and set up Brett Swenson s game-winning fi eld goal, as the Spartans completed the greatest comeback in NCAA I-A history, rallying from a 35-point third-quarter defi cit for a victory. An honorable mention All-Big Ten selection by the media as a senior in 2007, Key started eight games and recorded a career-best 69 tackles to rank fourth on the team. He was presented the MSU Downtown Coaches Club Award as the outstanding senior on special teams. Key returned an interception 31 yards for a touchdown in MSU s win over Pittsburgh and returned a fumble 20 yards for a score in a victory at Purdue, as the Spartans became bowl eligible. The Three Rivers, Mich., native fi nished his career with 113 tackles, including 4.5 for losses (19 yards), three interceptions and 12 passes defended. He also scored three career TDs (recovered blocked punt in end zone in 2004 vs. Wisconsin; interception return vs. Pittsburgh and fumble return vs. Purdue in 2007). A three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection, Key earned his bachelor s degree in packaging prior to his senior season. He spent the 2008 NFL season on practice squads for Cleveland, Detroit and San Diego. Prior to the 2009 campaign, Key suffered a hamstring injury and spent the entire season on injured reserve for Indianapolis. The Spartan defense held Wisconsin to 165 rushing yards - nearly 93 yards below its season average. COUSINS HEATS UP AS BIG TEN PLAY OPENS Junior quarterback Kirk Cousins ranks third in the Big Ten and No. 11 in the NCAA Football Subdivision in passing effi ciency with his rating. In addition, Cousins ranks fi fth in the Big Ten in passing yards (231.0 per game) and seventh in total offense (223.0 ypg.). He has completed 112-of-169 throws (.663) for 1,617 yards, 11 touchdowns and four interceptions. NORTHWESTERN VAN PELT, PINGEL ADDED TO SPARTAN STADIUM S RING OF FAME Former Michigan State All-Americans and College Football Hall of Famers Brad Van Pelt and John Pingel had their names added to Spartan Stadium s Ring of Fame prior to the Sept. 18, 2010, home game against Notre Dame. Van Pelt and Pingel joined Spartan legends Don Coleman, George Webster, former MSU President John Hannah and Charles Bubba Smith on the Ring of Fame. Born April 5, 1951, in Owosso, Mich., Van Pelt became a three-year starter for Coach Duffy Daugherty and earned fi rst-team All-America honors as both a junior and senior. As a sophomore in 1970, he had 80 tackles (42 solos, 38 assists) and a career-high six interceptions. As a junior, Van Pelt recorded 92 stops (51-41) and picked off four passes. He returned two interceptions for touchdowns against Oregon State in 1971, with returns covering 40 and 47 yards. As a senior, the 6-foot-5, 221-pound safety produced 84 tackles (42-42) and four interceptions. In 1972, he became the fi rst defensive back ever to receive the Maxwell Award as the nation s top collegiate player. Van Pelt fi nished his collegiate career with 256 tackles and 14 interceptions. A second-round draft pick by the New York Giants in 1973, he spent 14 years in the National Football League and earned All-Pro honors fi ve times ( ). His pro career totals include 20 interceptions, 14 fumble recoveries and 10 sacks. Van Pelt earned seven varsity letters at Michigan State while participating in football ( ), baseball ( ) and basketball ( ). He was named to the Lansing State Journal s MSU Centennial Super Squad in 1996 and inducted into the MSU Athletics Hall of Fame in 2000, College Football Hall of Fame in 2001 and Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in Van Pelt died on Feb. 17, 2009, in Harrison, Mich. He was 57. Born Nov. 6, 1916, in Mount Clemens, Mich., Pingel appeared in 28 consecutive games from for Coach Charlie Bachman and helped the Spartans to a combined record of (.750), including the school s fi rst-ever postseason bowl appearance. His likeness is preserved in one of the sandstone panels above the main entrance to Jenison Field House. As a junior, Pingel accounted for 1,146 total yards and 12 TDs while leading the Spartans to an 8-1 regular-season record and a trip to the 1938 Orange Bowl against Auburn. The 6-foot, 178-pound halfback led the team in rushing in 1937, with 117 carries for 665 yards (5.7 avg.) and fi ve TDs. Pingel completed 30-of-68 passes (.441) for 481 yards and seven scores, and he also led the nation in punting with his 42.6-yard average. He was named second-team All-American by The Associated Press and selected third-team All-American by the International News Service. In a come-from-behind victory in Week 2 at Michigan, Pingel hooked up with Ole Nelson for scoring plays of 30 and 42 yards. His 42-yard strike to Nelson with less than 10 minutes to play in the fourth quarter proved to be the game-winning score. In Week 3, he averaged 52 yards per punt in a 3-0 loss at Manhattan. Pingel scored three rushing TDs in a 21-7 win over Marquette in Week 5, including an 8-yard gallop. He threw TD passes of 12 yards to Eddie Pearce and 29 yards to Nelson in a 13-6 Homecoming victory over Carnegie Tech in Week 8. In the regular-season fi nale at San Francisco, Pingel scored on TD runs of 75 and 36 yards and averaged 50.8 yards per punt as Michigan State recorded its sixth-straight win, As a senior in 1938, he played 451 out of a possible 540 minutes while accounting for 1,127 yards and 12 TDs. Pingel rushed 110 times for 556 yards (5.1 avg.) and fi ve scores and connected on 54-of-101 throws (.535) for 571 yards and seven TDs. He also averaged 41.8 yards on 99 punts, and his 4,138 punting yards still rank as the NCAA single-season record. Pingel earned fi rst-team All-America honors from the AP, INS, Central Press, Newspapers Enterprise Association and Liberty Magazine. In Week 5, Pingel carried 19 times for 115 yards, including TD runs of 23 and 28 yards, and threw a 3-yard TD pass to Nelson as Michigan State knocked off previously unbeaten Syracuse, In Week 8, he had three TD passes in a victory at Marquette, including a 10-yard scoring toss to Jack Amon with less than two minutes remaining.

13 Pingel became the seventh pick in the fi rst round of the 1939 NFL Draft (held on Dec. 9, 1938) by the Detroit Lions. In his only season in the NFL, he started eight of nine games and produced 644 total yards and four TDs. Pingel completed 27-of-48 passes (.563) for 343 yards, three TDs and four interceptions. He gained 301 yards on 74 rushes and scored one rushing TD. Pingel ranked third in the NFL in punting with his 42.8-yard average (32 punts for 1,368 yards). He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1968 and the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in Pingel died on Aug. 14, 1999, in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. He was 82. CHARLES BUBBA SMITH NAMED BIG TEN ICON Two-time All-American Charles Bubba Smith ranks No. 26 among the Top 50 Big Ten Icons, according to a list compiled by the Big Ten Network. Smith was selected Lineman of the Year by United Press International in Despite being regularly double- or triple-teamed or having opponent s run away from his side of the fi eld, he still produced 10 tackles for losses in 1966 while helping the Spartans to a record. Michigan State ranked third in the NCAA in rushing defense in 1966, allowing just 51.4 yards per game. Smith became the fi rst selection overall in the 1967 National Football League Draft by the Baltimore Colts. In 1988, he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. In June 2006, Smith was rated among the Top 10 Greatest Defensive Players of All-Time, according to lists compiled by CollegeFootballNews.com s Pete Fiutak (No. 6) and Richard Cirminiello (No. 8). In September 2006, he became just the third player in Michigan State football history to have his jersey number (No. 95) retired, joining Don Coleman (No. 78, ) and George Webster (No. 90, ). The Big Ten Network is counting down the top 50 student-athletes in conference history, based solely on their collegiate playing careers.
