Last Week: IUP lost to California for the third straight season and fell to 0-3 in the PSAC West for the first time since 1982 with a defeat last Saturday at Miller Stadium. Josh Portis threw four touchdown passes, including two each to A.J. Jackson and Terrance Moore to lead the Vulcans to the win. Smith also rushed for 33 yards and scored a touchdown on the ground. Tobias Robinson carried 25 times for 99 yards and Harvie Tuck, who has emerged as the No. 2 tailback over the past two weeks, gained 30 yards and had a touchdown. 3 Last Year vs. Edinboro: IUP wiped out a 17-0 deficit in a span of 6:47 in the fourth quarter before Edinboro pulled out a victory on a fourth down 35-yard touchdown pass from Trevor Harris to Gary Nolen with 4:39 remaining. The Fighting Scots made it 17-0 on a 39-yard field goal by Merle Bouchat late in the third quarter. The Crimson Hawk offense came after the Bouchat field goal, driving 65 and 80 yards and scoring on a touchdown pass of 16 yards from Andrew Krewatch to Garrett Lestochi and a seven-yard scramble by Krewatch. After a second straight three and out by Edinboro, IUP tied it up on a 36-yard field goal by Craig Burgess with 8:06 left. Krewatch completed 22 of 38 passes for 313 yards. He was intercepted once and sacked five times. The Fighting Scot defense held Tobias Robinson and the IUP ground game in check, with Robinson gaining only 29 yards and the Crimson Hawks producing just 30 as a team. A New Quarterback: With the shoulder injury to four-year starter Andrew Krewatch, redshirt freshman Pat Smith made his second career appearance and first start at quarterback versus California. Smith is the first player other than Krewatch and Kevin Weidl to start at quarterback for IUP since Brian Eyerman played his last game versus Grand Valley State in the 2002 playoffs. Weidl started every game in 2003, 2004 and He missed the 2005 season while serving a university suspension. Krewatch was the starter as a true freshman in 2005 and started every game in 2007 and 2008 and the first five this season. Andrew Krewatch: Should Andrew Krewatch return this season, he still has a chance to break Brian Eyerman s career record for passing yards. Krewatch has 8,220 yards and needs 190 to take over the top spot. He already holds IUP career records for completions with 638 and attempts with 1,135 and is second to Eyerman with 69 touchdown passes. As a sophomore in 2007, Krewatch set IUP season records with 391 attempts, 237 completions and 3,100 yards and threw 29 touchdown passes, second only to Eyerman s 36 in He had a streak of 32 consecutive games with a touchdown pass snapped at Slippery Rock two weeks ago. He has been projected as a potential first day selection in the April 2010 draft. Owusu-Ansah was named to the D2Football.com All-America second team last season after leading the PSAC with eight interceptions, including seven in the final four games of the year, and placing second in the nation with an average of 0.80 picks per game. Owusu-Ansah has been a big playmaker in his career for the Crimson Hawks. He has an 89-yard kickoff return for a touchdown versus Southern Connecticut State and 53-yard punt return for a score last week versus California. He also has interceptions that helped seal wins over Southern Connecticut State and C.W. Post. Owusu-Ansah has scored six touchdowns by four different methods in his career. He has returned two kickoffs and two punts as well as one interception and one fumble for touchdowns. Craig Burgess: Junior kicker Craig Burgess brings a streak of 74 consecutive made extra points into Saturday s game. He was perfect in 46 attempts last season, the most without a miss in one season in school history, and is 91 of 92 in his career, the fifth most makes in IUP annals. Burgess is also 4 for 4 in field goal attempts this season and 26 of 34 in three seasons at IUP. He is third in school history in field goals made, three behind Josh Telenko and four shy of all-time leader John Sandstrom. Burgess tied a school record when he made four field goals last season versus Gannon. Burgess has made his last 10 field goal attempts and is tied with Nick Wallace for the most consecutive makes in school history. Mychal Skinner: Junior wide receiver Mychal Skinner needs seven more receptions to become the 14 th player in IUP history to reach 100 in a career. Skinner ranks 13 th in career receiving yards with 1,556 and has scored 12 touchdowns. Andre Henderson Remains Out: Junior free safety Andre Henderson will miss his third straight game Saturday after suffering a shoulder injury versus Mercyhurst. There is no timetable set for his return to the lineup. Despite only playing in four of six games, Henderson still ranks third on the team with 33 tackles.
5 Defensive Shuffling: With the injury to Andre Henderson, the IUP defensive coaches were forced to make some adjustments to the secondary. Sophomore Abe Satterfield, who started the season at drop linebacker, moved to a cornerback position while senior Myke Wells shifted to Henderson s free safety spot. Senior Thomas Lindsay took over for Satterfield at drop linebacker. However, Lindsay injured an ankle versus California and is questionable for Saturday s game. If he is unable to play, Satterfield will move back to drop linebacker and junior Neil James will likely step into the starting lineup at cornerback. IUP on Homecoming: IUP is 3-0 in homecoming games under Lou Tepper, including a double overtime win over Slippery Rock last year, and has won five in a row beginning with the 2004 season. The last loss in a homecoming contest was a defeat to a Tepper-led Edinboro team in Dating back to the 1984 season, IUP has won 22 of its past 25 homecoming games. 3-3 Record: IUP has not been 3-3 since the 2005 season and finished that year with a 5-5 record in Frank Cignetti s final season as head coach. Prior to that, IUP was 3-3 in 1999 but rebounded to win its last four regular season games and qualify for the playoffs, eventually extended its winning streak to six with victories over Slippery Rock and Millersville before losing to Northwest Missouri State in the national semifinals. IUP in the PSAC West: For the majority of the past 25 years, IUP has been the dominant program in the PSAC West, compiling a record of in division play since 1984 and winning or sharing the championship 17 times.
