The Gamecocks have won the last three Palmetto Series. South Carolina and Clemson are currently tied, 3-3, in this season s standings. Clemson Series Notes Contested at least once every season since , the series is currently in the Tigers favor 33-30, but the Gamecocks have won the last eight meetings, the longest win streak by either team in series history. Home Openers South Carolina is 23-9 all-time in home openers, including an 8-2 mark under head coach Dawn Staley. The Gamecocks have faced Clemson in their home opener four times prior to tonight s matchup with a 2-2 record in those games. Two of those four games were played in Colonial Life Arena, including the first basketball game the arena hosted, which South Carolina won in front 17,712 fans on Nov. 22, The Gamecocks are 14-2 in their home openers in Colonial Life Arena. Staley Staying Power South Carolina head coach Dawn Staley is in her 11th season at the helm after guiding the Gamecocks into the postseason eight times, including the 2017 National Championship and six other Sweet 16 berths. With a.717 ( ) winning percentage over her 19 seasons as a head coach, Staley is 21st among active NCAA Div. I head coaches with at least 10 years of experience and is the best among SEC head coaches. Staley is the third-longest tenured coach currently in the SEC, and her 10.9 league wins per season is best among the group. During the Gamecocks five seasons of dominance in the league (SEC regular-season champions ), the program won 14.2 conference games per season. With her 100th SEC regular-season victory coming against Auburn on Jan. 11, 2018, Staley became the eighth head coach all-time to record at least 100 such wins with one school. Her 109 SEC regular-season wins rank her second among active SEC coaches in victories. Going Guard After five seasons dominated by post play, the Gamecock roster is significantly tilted toward guard play and who better to lead such a squad than arguably the best point guard in U.S. basketball history. The seven Gamecock guards include fifth-year seniors Doniyah Cliney and Bianca Cuevas-Moore as well as junior Tyasha Harris. Sophomore Bianca Jackson is back after starting most of her freshman season. Staley and all of Gamecock Nation has welcomed the return of junior transfer Te a Cooper. Newcomers Nelly Perry, a graduate transfer from Clemson, and freshman Destanni Henderson complete the backcourt-heavy lineup that gives Staley the best chance to coach positionless basketball based on pro concepts rather than regimented plays. Leadership Lowdown In the week before the season officially began, the Gamecocks selected their captains for the season. Whoever wanted to take on the role made their pitch to their teammates, who then voted. For the second season, junior Tyasha Harris was voted as a captain. Seniors Doniyah Cliney and Alexis Jennings will also serve the team in that capacity this season. That philosophy was on full display in Nancy Lieberman Award Watch List First Team (Media) the exhibition game against Lander last week as the Preseason All-SEC First Team (Coaches) Preseason All-SEC Second Team (Coaches) Gamecocks logged 86 field goal attempts. In Staley s 10 seasons at the South Carolina helm, the team s record for field goal attempts is 76 (vs. Penn State, 11/20/11). Even in exhibition games, the Gamecocks have not attempted Starters vs. Bench more than 74 field goals in the Staley era. In the last 10 seasons, the Gamecocks have averaged 57.2 field goal attempts per game with a high of 59.5 per game in and a low of 53.3 in In the season opener, South Carolina attempted 68 field goals, its most in the regular season since Jan. 25, 2018, against Arkansas. The Gamecocks only exceeded 68 field goal attempts in one other game last season (72 vs. Alabama State, 11/10/17). Three for All In addition to playing faster, the Gamecocks are looking to expand their outside shooting game, and they wasted little time showing off that new commitment. With 10 made 3s in the season opener at Alabama State (Nov. 11), South Carolina reached double digits in that category for the first time since Mar. 25, 2017, in the NCAA Sweet 16 against Quinnipiac. It was just the ninth game in the Dawn Staley era in which the Gamecocks hit that mark. The Staley-era record for made 3s in a game is 16 against Minnesota on Dec. 11, South Carolina s 25 3-point field goal attempts at Alabama State were the most since the Gamecocks launched 32 in their NCAA Sweet 16 loss to Syrace on Mar. 25, Ranking Review The Gamecocks came in at No. 10 in this week s AP Poll, marking the 89th consecutive week and the 91st week of the Dawn Staley era ranked in the poll s top 10. 5 5 5 the start of the season. just Cristina Ciocan s nine career points-assists doubledoubles in program history. Schedule Strength With the release of the Preseason AP Poll, the Gamecocks found out just how challenging their schedule is. Up to 11 future opponents were ranked in the preseason top 25, including six in the top 10. Six of the preseason top-25 opponents are nonconference foes as once again Staley has planned to test her team beginning with No. 6 Maryland (Nov. 18). The Vancouver Showcase could see South Carolina play No. 8 Oregon State in the second round a No. 1 Notre Dame in the title game. The Gamecocks return to Columbia to face No. 4 Baylor (Dec. 2) and a week later travel to No. 21 Duke (Dec. 9). A trip to No. 2 UConn rounds out the list of ranked non-conference games. Five SEC teams are ranked in the preseason with South Carolina set to face No. 6 Mississippi State at home and on the road. The Gamecocks host No. 14 Georgia and No. 16 Missouri and will travel to No. 11 Tennessee and No. 20 Texas A&M. Who s Back? Entering the season, the natural reaction is to talk about what South Carolina has lost the unanimous National Player of the Year, No. 1 WNBA Draft Pick A ja Wilson. But, the cupboard in Columbia is certainly not bare. The Gamecocks return eight letterwinners from last season s NCAA Elite Eight team, including four starters. That group of eight accounted for 64.7 percent of last season s points and 67.6 percent of its rebounding. South Carolina also returns fifth-year senior Bianca Cuevas-Moore, who played a key role in the 2017 NCAA Championship. Ty Time Junior Tyasha Harris is a proven multi-threat point guard, which has earned her spots on the Naismith Trophy and Nancy Lieberman Award watch lists. SEC coaches also tapped her for Preseason First-Team All- SEC recognition. Last season, Harris averaged 10.4 points and an SECbest 6.1 assists per game. She has 25 career double-digit scoring games with 19 of those coming last season, and she has handed out five or more assists in 35 of her 74 career games played. Her renewed focus on scoring did not diminish her ball distribution, however, as she led the SEC with 6.1 assists per game and sent the South Carolina record for single-season assists at 220. Harris finished the season with six doubledoubles, the most by any Gamecock in a single season Three of those games were against SEC foes. She trails Roster No. Name Pos. Ht. Yr. Her strong work last season also earned her a spot on the Katrina McClain Award Watch List. In her Gamecock debut season, Jennings averaged 11.4 points and 6.6 rebounds on 58.3 percent shooting and is the team s top returning scorer and rebounder. H2O Junior forward Mikiah Herbert Harrigan has shown the ability to become the Gamecocks next dominant post player, although she plays in a different way than her All-American predecessors. A 2018 SEC All- Tournament Team selection, she has delivered when called on and should thrive with more playing time. Herbert Harrigan posted 10 double-digit scoring games last season. In the 2018 SEC Tournament she was second on the team with 14.0 points per game on 72.0 percent field goal shooting, adding 5.0 rebounds per game and seven blocked shots over the three-game march to the tournament title. 7 7 7 Catapulting South Carolina into the national spotlight, Dawn Staley has made the Gamecocks a mainstay in the battle for SEC and national championships. She capped her first decade in Garnet and Black by leading her team to its fourth-straight SEC Tournament title, the first four-peat champion in league history, and celebrating the program s first National Player of the Year and No. 1 WNBA Draft pick in A ja Wilson. Staley s decade at the helm of the Gamecocks includes: 2017 NCAA National Championship 112 consecutive weeks ranked in the AP Top 25, including 63 weeks in the top five Seven straight 25-win seasons, including three 30-win campaigns led by a school-record 34 victories in Four SEC regular-season championships (2014, 2015, 2016, 2017) Four SEC Tournament titles (2015, 2016, 2017, 2018) Four NCAA Attendance titles, averaging over 12,000 fans each season (2015, 2016, 2017, 2018) Even at the height of her coaching career, Staley is still recognized for her body of work as a one of the most decorated participants in U.S. women s basketball history. The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame solidified that legacy with her enshrinement as part of the Class of 2013 after her 2012 induction into the Women s Basketball Hall of Fame. In her 19th seasons as a head coach, Staley has amassed a (.717) record, including her (.743) slate through 10 seasons at South Carolina. She has led her teams to nine 25-win seasons, a total of 15 postseason appearances (two WNIT) and 89 weeks in the Associated Press top 10, including 12 in the No. 1 spot. Also a force in USA Basketball, she was named the U.S. Women s National Team head coach for after leading three other USA Basketball teams to gold medals 2015 FIBA U19 World Championships, 2014 FIBA U18 Americas Championship, 2007 Pan Am Games and serving as an assistant on the Senior National Team and again , during which the U.S. claimed gold in the 2014 FIBA World Championship and the 2008 and 2016 Olympic Games. At the helm of the Gamecocks over the last 10 seasons, Staley has been named National Coach of the Year (2014, Basketball Times), a Naismith National Coach of the Year Finalist (2014, 2015, 2016), SEC Coach of the Year (2014, Coaches and AP; 2015, Coaches; 2016, Coaches and AP) and BCA Female Coach of the Year (2012). She became the fastest coach to 200 wins in program history, needing just 277 games at South Carolina to reach the plateau. Under Staley s leadership, four Gamecocks have collected nine All-America selections, two have picked up five SEC Player of the Year honors, two have earned SEC Defensive Player of the Year recognition a total of three times, one has been the SEC 6th Player of the Year and three were named SEC Freshman of the Year. She has coached 11 Gamecocks who earned All-SEC honors a combined 23 times, including 12 first-team selections, and six Gamecocks have been selected in the WNBA Draft in the last four seasons, including A ja Wilson, who, in 2018, became the program s first No. 1 pick in the draft, and three others who earned WNBA All-Rookie Team honors, led by 2017 WNBA Rookie of the Year Allisha Gray. On Staley s watch, the Gamecocks are enjoying the most sustained success in program history. After posting backto-back 25-win seasons in and for the first time in more than 30 years, the team broke the school record with 34 wins. South Carolina won more SEC games than the season before in each of Staley s first seven seasons, culminating in the team recording just the second 16-0 conference record in league history. Staley s 109 SEC wins are more than any other Gamecock coach, accounting for 63.0 percent of the program s total 173 wins over its 27 seasons in the league. She has delivered the only SEC championships in program history, lifting that trophy four times in as many seasons, and she has helped the Gamecocks to seven of the program s eight top-four finishes in the SEC. Off the court, Staley s Gamecocks have been active in the community and thriving in the classroom.
