NCCU is still looking for its first road victory of the season. This will be the second trip to the state of Virginia for NCCU this season. The Eagles will visit 14 different states this season after playing in 13 different states a year ago. NCCU is in its second season as a Division I program. THE SERIES This will be the fourth hardwood meeting between the Eagles of NCCU and the Lancers of Longwood since the teams first met on Dec. 2, The Lancer lead the series 3-0. Longwood defeated the Eagles in the last match-up on Nov. 29, 2001, in Farmville, Va. In the prior three contests, the Lancers have out-scored NCCU 265 (88.3 avg.) to 206 (68.7 avg.). Central in after a five-year stint as head coach at Tennessee-Chattanooga, where he was and won two Southern Conference divisional titles from He also served as associate head coach at Chattanooga from , and held assistant coaching positions at Marshall from and Charleston from RECORDS WATCH: AYALA BREAKS NCCU CAREER STEALS MARK On Saturday, Jan. 24 at Chicago State University, NCCU senior guard Bryan Ayala became the school s all-time leader in career steals. Ayala set the new standard at the 6:01 mark of the first half against the CSU Cougars, passing Clifton Daye s tally of 172 steals from Ayala currently has 182 career steals and ranks third in career assists with 351. Ayala needs 10 helpers to pass Donald Sinclair (360 assists, ) for sole possession of second place. Michael Wright ( ) holds the school record for career assists with 409. (see page 5 of game notes for complete lists) WORAH-OZIMO SUFFERS SEASON-ENDING INJURY In the middle of the first half against Savannah State on Jan. 31, NCCU junior center Stevy Worah-Ozimo fell to the ground after getting tangled up with teammate Jamar Briscoe, resulting in a broken right arm. The injury will require surgery and end the season of the center. At the time of his injury, Worah-Ozimo ranked No. 1 among the NCAA Division I Independent statistical leaders in rebounding. BRISCOE VOTED HSRN NATIONAL PLAYER OF THE WEEK NCCU freshman guard Jamar Briscoe was voted as the Heritage Sports Radio Network (HSRN) Division I National Player of the Week (Jan ). During a 2-1 week for the Eagles, Briscoe averaged 24.3 points, 2.7 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.3 steals, while shooting 21-of-38 from the field (.553), including 8-of-15 from three-point range (.533), and 23-of-29 from the free throw line (.793). The rookie amassed 31 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals versus Chowan to earn the 2009 BC Powder Classic Most Outstanding Player award. EAGLES REACH 96 POINTS FOR FIRST TIME SINCE 2004 NCCU scored a season-high 96 points during a home setback to Chicago State on Jan. 10, marking the highest point total reached by the Eagles in five years. 5 BRISCOE RECEIVES STANDING OVATION AT DUQUESNE On Dec. 22, 2008, those inside the Palumbo Center at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pa., took part in something rarely seen in college sports. When visiting NCCU rookie guard Jamar Briscoe fouled out of the game with 1:23 remaining after scoring a career-high 34 points, the home fans gave Briscoe a standing ovation. A classy move by the Duquesne faithful. DAVIS EARNS ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM HONORS AT SPII & IOWA NCCU sophomore guard Vincent Davis has been selected to two All- Tournament Teams this season. In the final two games of the 2008 South Padre Island Invitational (Nov ), Davis amassed 25 points, nine steals, eight rebounds, five blocked shots and two assists to earn All-Tournament Team honors. In his best outing, Davis recorded 15 points, six steals, five boards, three rejections and an assist against UNC-Wilmington on Nov. 28 in South Texas. On Dec. 6-7 at the Drake/Iowa Realty Invitational, Davis collected 37 points (18.5 avg.), seven rebounds, four blocked shots, four steals and two assists to capture All-Tournament Team recognition. TWO EAGLES SUFFER INJURIES BEFORE START OF SEASON A pair of NCCU newcomers, junior transfer Lamar Pittman and freshman Dami Sapara, suffered injuries before the season even got started. Pittman will miss the entire season, while the length of Sapara s absence has not yet been determined. Both probable starters at the forward position underwent knee operations on the same day (Nov. 7). EAGLES IN TRANSITION - SECOND YEAR OF DIVISION I North Carolina Central University, located in Durham, N.C., is in its second season of NCAA Division I competition. The Eagles will be eligible for the NCAA post-season at the end of the four-year reclassification process in the campaign. NCCU MEN S BASKETBALL HISTORY LESSON For decades, the NCCU men s basketball program has been competitive among its peers in the NCAA Division II ranks. The Eagles have made six trips to the NCAA playoffs in the past 20 years, including a regional title in 1993 and the national championship crown in NCCU has produced Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer and legendary Boston Celtic Sam Jones. He played with the Eagles from / , scoring 1,745 points under head coach John B. McLendon, also a member of the Basketball Hall of Fame. NCCU ROOKIE BRISCOE NETS 18 POINTS IN COLLEGE DEBUT NCCU freshman guard Jamar Briscoe (5-10, 155, Baltimore, Md.) started his college hardwood career by scoring a team-best 18 points against No. 21 Wake Forest University. 14 NCCU BOASTS MORE EXPERIENCE, GREATER EXPECTATIONS FOR SECOND DIVISION ONE SEASON Veteran Eagles Have Now Played Against Improved Competition, Understand Challenges of Long Road Schedule The North Carolina Central University men s basketball team enters the season, its second as a Division I program, with greater expectations and a better understanding of the road that lies ahead. NCCU s seven returning letterwinners have experienced the school s inaugural Division I campaign, so they stand to be more prepared for the two biggest challenges facing an independent, reclassifying NCAA institution - the improved level of competition and the burden of playing a majority of the schedule on the road. Now armed with this knowledge, the veterans can pass along their wisdom to the team s seven newcomers, something that the young Eagles of a year ago did not have the benefit of. As fledglings to the Division I landscape in , the Eagles travelled roughly 22,280 miles to 23 road games in 13 different states, all while competing against one of the toughest schedules in the country. The result was an overall record of Among the squad s victories was a road win over the eventual Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Champions and a defeat of long-time rival Winston-Salem State during the MEAC Tournament, leaving the Eagles with a brighter outlook on the season to come. We laid the groundwork last year... the pioneers, said NCCU head coach Henry Dickerson, entering his fifth season with the Eagles and 10th season overall as a head coach. Our expectations are higher this year because last year we did not know what to expect. The Eagles return three starters, including senior guards Bryan Ayala (6-3, 190, Norfolk, Va.) and J Mell Walters (5-10, 175, Kinston, N.C.) and junior forward Joshua Worthy (6-5, 205, Lewisville, Texas). Ayala was the team s No. 1 playmaker with 119 assists and second-leading scorer with 13.0 points per game. Walters placed second on the squad with 79 assists in 22 starts, while Worthy injected the Eagles with energy as a steady contributor of 4.2 points and 4.3 rebounds per outing. Three of NCCU s other four veterans also started at least seven contests. Senior shooting guard Philip Branch (6-0, 190, Fort Worth, Texas) connected on 42 three-pointers in 22 games, averaging 7.7 points each trip to the hardwood. Fellow senior guard Ashton Sauls (6-0, 170, Des Moines, Iowa) averaged 7.0 points per game, while shooting 38 percent from long range. Junior forward Tremain Holloway (6-5, 205, Rocky Mount, N.C.) muscled his way to 2.5 rebounds and 3.1 points per contest as a 46 percent shooter from the field. The youngest returner, sophomore point guard Michael Glasker (5-7, 155, Newport News, Va.), came off the bench to contribute 35 assists and 1.9 points per game. This solid group of experienced Eagles will be infused with seven newcomers, including transfers Lamar Pittman (Jr., F, 6-8, 230, Poughkeepsie, N.Y., Dutchess C.C.), Stevy Worah-Ozimo (Jr., C, 6-9, 220, Gabon, West Africa, TCI College), Vincent Davis (So., G, 6-2, 170, Nashville, Tenn., Motlow State C.C.) and Norbert Randall (So., F, 6-6, 246, Jacksonville, Fla., Liberty Univ.), along with rookies Jamar Briscoe (G, 5-10, 155, Baltimore, Md.), Dami Sapara (F, 6-6, 195, Staten Island, N.Y.) and Nick Chasten (F, 6-7, 216, Raleigh, N.C.). Our new guys bring size and athletic ability, Dickerson said. We have a whole package that is made up of what everybody brings to the table. Our No. 1 goal remains the same, to make sure everyone graduates and to compete against the other NCCU sports teams for having the highest grade point average, Dickerson said. Our second goal is to be better and more competitive than what we were last year, and to win all of our home games. On The Road Again The NCCU schedule will be quite familiar to the returning Eagles. The travel itinerary includes 21 road games, covering approximately 25,344 miles, in 14 states (Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, Virginia), including eight states the Eagles did not compete in during last season s 13-state tour. NCCU will spend its first six games of the season on the road, covering about 8,166 miles during the month of November. NCCU opens the season at Wake Forest on Nov. 14 in Winston-Salem, N.C. The Eagles will then travel to Kent State (Nov. 17), Florida Gulf Coast (Nov. 20) and Tulsa (Nov. 25), before heading to the South Padre Island Invitational in Texas during Thanksgiving weekend (Nov ). Kent State finished with a 28-7 record last season and received votes in the final Associated Press Top 25 poll, while Tulsa posted a mark and received votes in the final ESPN/ USA Today Coaches Poll. NCCU s first home contest inside McLendon-McDougald Gym is Dec. 3 against High Point. The Panthers, members of the Big South Conference, finished with a record a year ago. The Eagles then make a return trip to Drake University s Iowa Realty Tournament on Dec NCCU plays tournament host Drake on Dec. 5, and will match up with either Furman or Texas-Pan American on Dec. 6. Drake completed the campaign with a 28-5 record and a final ranking of No. 23 in the coaches poll. The Eagles visit Arkansas (Dec. 10), which finished last season with a record and received votes in the final ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll, followed by trips to Old Dominion (Dec. 14) and South Carolina (Dec. 16) before returning home to play rival Winston-Salem State on Dec. 18. NCCU defeated the Rams in a MEAC Tournament exhibition game to end the season. (continued on next page)
