SEASON NOTES Oklahoma recorded a - overall record and finished - in the Big Conference to tie for th place. OU was the No. seed in the Phillips 66 Big Championship and beat No. seed Baylor (-6) before losing to No. 2 seed Texas (-). The Sooners did not qualify for postseason play. Here are notes from the season: Picked by Big coaches in October to finish th in the conference, OU tied for th place (- record) and went 6- against Big competition (- in the league tournament). The Sooners started Big play with a - mark before losing eight of their last nine regular season conference games. Senior Cade Davis and sophomore Andrew Fitzgerald were honorable mention All-Big selections. Davis ranked first on the team in scoring (.2) while Fitzgerald ranked second (.6). With just two players on the roster taller than 6-foot-, guards accounted for 6 percent of the team s points on the season. Sophomore Steven Pledger s points in a Jan. 2 overtime win at Iowa State tied as the most by a Big player in conference action (Kansas State s Jacob Pullen also scored in a home win over Kansas) and the second most by a Big player overall. Pledger s performance helped snap OU s -game losing streak away from home and his point total tied as the fifth highest by a guard in school history. Oklahoma went 2-0 in overtime games on the season to run its overtime record under head coach Jeff Capel to -0. The Sooners beat North Carolina Central (-6) at home on Nov. and Iowa State (2-6) on the road on Jan. 2. The Sooners ranked third in the Big with their. free throw percentage. The mark was the program s second best in the last nine years and the seventh best in the -year history of the program. A human relations major, he was one of student-athletes recognized as a first-team selection. To qualify for the all-academic team, student-athletes must maintain a.00 GPA or higher (either cumulative or over each of the two previous semesters) and have participated in 60 percent of his team s scheduled contests. YOUTH MOVEMENT Oklahoma relied on underclassmen for much of its production throughout the season. Freshmen and sophomores accounted for 0 percent of the team s points on the year, 6 percent of its rebounds and percent of its assists. Seven of the team s top eight scorers and five of its top seven rebounders were freshmen and sophomores. Eight of the Sooners top nine scorers and rebounders were in their first or second year of Division I basketball. FITZGERALD EARNS HONORABLE MENTION ALL-LEAGUE HONORS Sophomore forward Andrew Fitzgerald joined Cade Davis as an honorable mention All-Big selection. The 6-, 2-pound Fitzgerald was OU s leading scorer and rebounder for much of the season and finished the year with averages of.6 points and team-high-tying.0 rebounds per game. He paced OU s regulars with his.6 field goal percentage and also shot.0 from the free throw line a significant improvement over his.6 mark as a freshman. Fitzgerald led the Sooners in scoring nine times on the year and tallied at least points times and at least 20 points on four occasions. He recorded his lone career double-double when he scored points and pulled down a career-high rebounds Dec. at Arkansas. He led OU with his 2 blocked shots and steals on the year. PLEDGER GOES FOR AT IOWA STATE Sophomore guard Steven Pledger poured in a career-high points in an 2-6 overtime win at Iowa State on Jan. 2 to help OU snap a -game losing streak away from home. Pledger s points tied for the most in Big play on the year (Kansas State s Jacob Pullen scored vs. Kansas on Feb. ) and tied for the second most by a conference player in any game on the season (Baylor s LaceDarius Dunn scored against Morgan State on Jan. ).
