3 Will Wade Head 1st Year at LSU 5th Year as a Head Coach Frank William Will Wade was named the 22nd head men s basketball coach at LSU on March 20, He comes to LSU after a two-year stint as the head coach at Virginia Commonwealth University with four years of very successful experience as a head basketball coach. Wade was introduced to LSU fans in a most unique way for an introduction of a Tiger coach -- at a special media event held in the middle of the LSU Student Union. Wade told the media and a large contingent of LSU students: I am so excited about the opportunity to lead this program and LSU Basketball back to the top of the SEC and back to regular, consistent NCAA Tournament appearances. We have been to four Final Fours. We have been to 21 NCAA Tournaments. We have 10 SEC Championships, and we are going to add to all three of those categories over our tenure here. We are going to have players, staff members, everyone in our program is going to be committed to doing what it takes to make LSU the best basketball program that it can be. We are going to have unwavering commitment to put the team first, to put the state first, to put our school first to represent all of these folks in a firstclass fashion. We are going to be a hardworking team that represents this great university that represents this great state, Wade said. LSU and its fans are not looking for a rebuilding program, but taking the foundation and making it solid again a change of culture that gives the program a look of consistency yearafter-year. Wade, one of the youngest coaches in Division I at 34, but one of the most energetic showed his recruiting chops early with a class for the season that was ranked 16th in college basketball in the composite recruiting rankings. Wade s recruiting chops and promotional ideas has created a buzz in the pre-season that hasn t been seen too often and the Coach has done his part, speaking most of the summer on the Tiger Tour and to student groups making sure they feel a part of the program. Coach Wade has been seen on the night prior to football game visiting with folks in the RV lots and on the first day of school was out in a golf cart picking up students and giving them a lift to opening day classes. The native of Nashville, Tennessee, directed VCU to a record and two NCAA Tournament appearances the last two seasons. The 2016 Rams advanced to the second round of the tournament, defeating seventh-seed Oregon State before losing to Oklahoma. Wade was the youngest head coach in the NCAA Tournament in In 2017, VCU lost to St. Mary s in the first round of the 2017 tourney. The Rams were 28-8 over his two years in the Atlantic 10 Conference, posting 14-4 records both years. The team was in 2016 and earned a share of the Atlantic 10 Conference regular season crown. The 2017 team won 26 games and finished second in the league, one-game behind Dayton. Under his tutelage, guard Melvin Johnson earned First Team All-Atlantic 10 honors in while Je Quan Lewis represented VCU on the first team. Mo Alie-Cox was named to the A-10 Defensive Team in both 2016 and Wade, age 34, previously served at VCU as an assistant with the Rams under Shaka Smart from VCU was during that time, reached three NCAA Tournament and won the 2012 Colonial Athletic Association Championship. He was part of the staff in 2011 when VCU advanced from the NCAA First Four all the way to the Final Four in Houston. During his tenure as a Ram assistant, Wade, who worked closely with VCU s post players, saw the Milwaukee Bucks select center Larry Sanders with the 15th overall pick in the 2010 NBA Draft (now with Cleveland). In addition, Wade played a major role in the development of current NBA players Troy Daniels (Memphis) and Briante Weber (Charlotte). Weber owns VCU records for 3-pointers in a single season and career steals. Wade is credited with being a key figure in four top non-power five recruiting classes in his four seasons at VCU. Prior to becoming the head coach at VCU, Wade served as the head coach at Chattanooga for the and seasons. His first Mocs squad went in 2014, finishing 12-6 and second in regular season Southern Conference play. The 18 wins overall were the most by the program since and the 12 wins in league games was the highest total since The team made the school s first postseason appearance since 2009 in the CIT. Wade was honored with the Anton Foy Southern Conference Coach of the Year award for his efforts in Also that year, Z. Mason became the first Chattanooga student-athlete to win the conference s Defensive Player of the Year award. The Mocs won 22 games in 2015 and finished 15-3 in the league as Wade guided Chattanooga to its first 20-win season since He finished his two seasons there at and 27-7 in league play. In the two seasons prior to his arrival, Chattanooga was overall and in SoCon play. In his four years as a head coach, he has a combined record at Chattanooga and VCU of and THE WADE RECORD in conference play with three post-season appearances. Wade s reputation, where ever he has coached, is a person who is a tireless worker and relentless recruiter. Wade was VCU Head Coach Shaka Smart s first hire upon being named the head VCU coach in That reputation was cemented prior to his arrival on the VCU campus. He served as an assistant to Tommy Amaker at Harvard in and Much like at VCU, he was Amaker s first hire. In their second year, the Crimson went 14-14, the first season of.500 or better in the program since Wade had a hand in the development of future NBA standout Jeremy Lin and assembled a top 25 recruiting class during his stay. Wade s coaching start came at Clemson where he served as Director of Basketball Operations ( ) and Graduate Assistant ( ) after four seasons as a student manager ( ). There he worked for coaches Larry Shyatt ( ) and Oliver Purnell ( ). In eight years on coaching staffs at Clemson, Harvard and VCU, the teams had a record of with six postseason appearances ( ). THE NUMBERS GAME Here are some of the important numbers with the LSU basketball program: Record when holding opponent to 70 points or less since start of season Record since start of season when out rebounding opponent. 58 Wins since start of when LSU was down by 5 or more points at halftime Number of times since LSU has shot 50 percent or more in a game and won. 22 Number of head coaches in LSU basketball history including new coach Will Wade Last time a freshman scored more on opening night than Tremont Waters LSU rank in nation in 2-point % (57.9%)... Last season 50.2% Combined threes in two road wins at Memphis and A&M at Memphis, 12 at A&M Ranking nationally in overall FG percentage, 49.1% (45 percent last year) 5 -- No. of turnovers vs. UGA 1/16; equals fewest in a game at LSU (11 times) Record since when LSU has a 20+ point lead at halftime Positive assist-to-turnover ratio; LSU was last year. LAST TIME OUT VANDY 77, LSU NASHVILLE -- JAN. 20, 2018 LSU found itself down early at Memorial Gymnasium and down by as much as 16 points three minutes into the second half, before rallying to take a brief lead in the final 2:30 of the contest. Again, LSU closed with a rush, but was unable to stop Vanderbilt once the Tigers were able to grab a lead. The Tigers were down and in the second half before beginning to ride the back of Duop Reath who took a pass from Tremont Waters to take the only lead of the game at with 2:21 to play. That lead lasted just 21 seconds as Vandy was able to get two free throws and a bucket off a turnover to go up three and LSU couldn t overcome that in the final minute. Reath had a career high 31 points with 13 rebounds as the senior made 13-of-20 field goals, including 1-of-2 three-pointers and 4-of-8 at the line. Reath also had three blocks. It was his second double double of the year, his ninth of his career at LSU, and his second time over 30 points this season. The Tigers struggled in the opening half, shooting 35.7%, but came back to make 17-of-34 (50%) in the final 20 minutes. However, LSU was just 4-of-19 from the arc (21.1%), its lowest percentage of the year and the second time LSU has made just four treys (at Arkansas). Vandy shot 51 percent for the game and put the game away going 19-of-25 from the line in the second half, compared to 7-of-13 for LSU. LSU fell from the ranks of the final seven teams in Division I to be undefeated on the road for the year, entering Saturday s play LSU MEN S BASKETBALL

5 DON T LET A RECORD FOOL YOU Some of these numbers will be discussed more, but there is a difference and an improvement in LSU Basketball at this point in the year compared to where LSU finished last year. Category NCAA Rk (Stat) NCAA Rk (Stat) Field Goal % 130 (45.1%) 21 (49.1%) FG Defense 326 (47.2%) 182 (43.7%) Scoring Offense 118 (74.8) 64 (79.3%) Opponents Pts 335 (83.0) 159 (71.6%) Scoring Margin 311 (-8.2) 88 (+7.7) Assist-TO Margin 274 (0.87) 61 (1.27) Two-Point FG Pct. 136 (50.2) 11 (57.9%) Free Throw Pct. 199 (69.6) 97 (73.4%) SO CLOSE TO DIFFERENT MARK IN SEC LSU won its two SEC games on the road at Texas A&M and Arkansas. But LSU s six game record certainly shows a willingness to continue to battle through games and have a chance at the end. The Tigers are having to learn 1) what to do with a lead; 2) what they must do to stop opponent s runs; and 3) what are the options that can get their back in the game. In all four league losses, the Tigers were no more than eight points back at the end. Not counting LSU s two league wins a year ago, LSU had only five total games in which the final margin was eight or less and only one game of less than three. Here s the inside of LSU s four losses that could have turned around: Kentucky L, LSU up 7, 19:39 to play; two shots to tie in final seven seconds. Alabama L, LSU up 5, 7:27 1st half; Down 15 2nd half, cut it to four final minutes. Georgia L, LSU up 12, 4:10 1st half; Up 10 at half; 3 pter to win misses final seconds. Vandy L, Vandy led 16, 16:54 2nd half; LSU takes lead, 2:21 left but cannot keep lead. FOUR WINS OVER NCAA TOP 50 RPI TEAMS LSU has four wins to its credit over teams in the Sunday NCAA RPI release and three road wins on its resume to date: No. 32 Arkansas 13-6 (road) No. 33 Texas A&M 13-6 (road) No. 38 Michigan 16-5 (neutral) No. 49 Houston 15-4 (home) WILL WADE The graduate of Franklin Road Academy, who served as a student manager for the basketball team, returned to his hometown for Saturday s game at Memorial Gym against Vanderbilt. Already this season, his fifth as a head coach, Coach Wade has won his 100th career game. This from one of the youngest head coaches in the major conferences this season: Name School Birthdate David Padgett Louisville 2/13/1985 Will Wade LSU 11/26/1982 Richard Pitino Minnesota 9/16/1982 Mike Boynton, Jr. Oklahoma St. 1/17/1982 Lavall Jordan Butler 4/16/1979 LSU SECOND IN SEC IN SHOOTING The Tigers have fallen below 50 percent from the field for the season and LSU is second in the SEC in field goal percentage at 49.1 percent. LSU has recorded seven games this season in which it has shot 50 percent or better from the field: CAREER DOUBLE-DOUBLES AARON EPPS (6) Game Date Pts Reb (1) Gardner-Webb 12/16/ (2) Auburn 1/18/ Ole Miss 2/14/ (3) Houston 12/13/ SFA 12/16/ Arkansas 1/10/ DUOP REATH (9) Game Date Pts Reb (7) Wofford 11/12/ Old Dominion 11/24/ Miss. LSU is continuing to try to improve its field goal percentage defense which is No. 12 in the league at 43.7 percent. However, on the plus side, last year opponents shot over 47 percent against the Tigers. LSU has now won eight straight games when shooting over 50 percent, dating back to last season. LSU INSIDE THE ARC For much of the non-conference season, LSU was 60 percent or better shooting from inside the arc, but LSU is now at 57.9 percent, No. 11 in the country according to TeamRankings.com. LSU s present total is way up from last season when LSU shot 50.2% inside the arc. LSU POSTED 25 TREYS IN FIRST TWO ROAD WINS While LSU has been shooting the ball better from the arc everywhere, in the first two road games, the Tigers made 13-of-26 trey attempts in the road win at Memphis (12/29) and 12-of-28 (1/6) in the win at A&M LSU MEN S BASKETBALL

The school record is 234 for a season, during the season. NUMBERS LAST 5 GAMES In the last five games, Duop Reath has been leading the Tigers averaging 15.0 points per game and 6.8 rebounds. The Tigers have averaged 68.2 points and given up an average of 66.8 per contest. The only stat that has really hurt the Tigers is on the boards, as opponents in the last five games have averaged 36.8 rebounds a game compared to 32.6 for the Tigers. NUMBERS BY HALVES LSU has shown its strength in most of the games in the first half when the numbers are broken down by halves. In the first half of the first 18 games, LSU is averaging 38.9 points compared to 32.3 for opponents. Even in the six conference games, LSU is averaging 33 points, compared to 28.3 for opponents. LSU is giving up an average of four points more than scoring in the second half of conference games. In the 18-game stats, LSU is consistent overall from the field, shooting 49.2 percent in the first half and 49.0 percent in the second half. In the league games, LSU shoots 42.9 percent in the first half and 45.3 percent in the second half. Minutes are also racking up in conference games as Tremont Waters (35.2), Skylar Mays (31.0) and Duop Reath (30.7) are also averaging over 30 minutes per game. Waters is third in the league in minutes played (overall and SEC games), while Mays and Reath are in the top 20 for minutes played in conference games. REATH HAVING A GOOD RUN INSIDE FOR THE TIGERS The senior has been playing well of late as evidenced by his 31-point, 13 rebound effort at Vandy Saturday, his second double double against SEC competition this year. Reath averaged 12.0 points a game, 10.5 in league play in his first year at LSU as a junior. For the entire season, Reath is averaging 13.4 points and 5.6 rebounds. In the conference games, Reath is averaging a team best 16.5 points and 7.5 rebounds. In the last five games, Reath s numbers are 15.0 points and 6.8 rebounds. Reath is on a string of four straight double figure games in which he is 26-of-48 from the field and 4-of-8 from three-point range. The native of South Sudan, who grew up in Australia scored 30 previously in the UNCW game when he made 13-of-17 field goals with a trey; and, 24 points and 11 rebounds in the Kentucky game earlier this month when he was 11-of-17 from the field with two treys. Reath earned SEC Player of the Week honors for the second time while at LSU after his big game versus UNCW in December. After hitting 13-of-20 against Vandy, Reath is 98-of-172 for the year from the field (57%) and that is second in the league. Reath is averaging 12.4 points per game and 5.2 rebounds overall and 13.5 points per game and 6.4 rebounds in SEC games. From the field he is 85-of-152 (55.9%, 2nd in the league). In conference play, he is seventh in scoring, fifth in rebounding and fifth in field goal percentage (51.9%). THE OPPONENT TEXAS A&M A&M has won two conference games against Ole Miss and Mizzou last week coming into Baton Rouge for the rematch of the second SEC game of the year back on Jan. 6. In the game, the two long three-pointers by Tremont Waters in the final 12 seconds pushed LSU to a win at Reed Arena. In that first game, Waters had 21 points and four assists, while Skylar Mays (6 assists) and Aaron Epps each had 11 points. Duop Reath had nine points and 10 rebounds. The Tigers shot more from the arc than overall, shooting 40 percent overall and made 12 threes in a 42 percent night from the arc. A&M was just 5-of-25 from the arc, but made a living off LSU s 13 turnovers, getting a advantage in points off turnovers and 16-3 on second chance points. Billy Kennedy, the New Orleans native who has served as head coach at Centenary and Southeastern in Louisiana on the college level, is in his seventh season at A&M. With the LSU win earlier this month, LSU took a lead in the series and stopped a three-game Texas A&M win string. LSU leads the series in Baton Rouge, WATERS EARNS SECOND SEC FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK HONOR For Tremont Waters, the play at the end of the Texas A&M game certainly helped him earn his second SEC Freshman of the Week honor in a season that has already seen him three times get recognition on SportsCenter s Plays of the Day. The 5-11, 167-pounder averaged 19.5 points, eight rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.5 steals against 17thranked Kentucky and at No. 11 Texas A&M. Waters made two treys from 30-plus feet in the final 12 seconds to beat Texas A&M Saturday in College Station. Overall, Waters is averaging a team best 15.8 points a game, 3.6 rebounds, 5.9 assists and 2.1 steals. He is eighth in the league in scoring, second in assists, first in steals and eighth in field goal percentage (45.3%). Waters first earned FOW honors after his opening game in which he scored 27 points, the most by a freshman in an opening game since TREMONT WATERS THREE DOUBLE FIGURE ASSIST GAMES THIS YEAR LSU freshman Tremont Waters has posted 10 assists on three occasions this season, vs. UT Martin LSU MEN S BASKETBALL

7 (11/29), UNCW (12/10) and UNF (12/22). Here is the list of those with double figure assists games for LSU since the start of the season: 11 Skylar Mays, vs. Houston, 11/29/ Tremont Waters, vs. UNF, 12/22/ Tremont Waters, vs. UNCW, 12/10/ Tremont Waters, vs. UT Martin, 11/29/ Ben Simmons, vs. NC State, 11/24/ Charles Carmouche, at Marquette, 12/22/ Garrett Temple, vs. Troy, 11/30/ Tack Minor, vs. UNO, 11/24/ Tack Minor, vs. Ohio State, 1/15/2005 While Tack Minor had 10 assists in the same season, Waters becomes the first player to go backto-back double figure assists since Randy Livingston as a redshirt freshman had three straight games of double figure assists in the season 12 vs. Georgia State, 12 vs. Md-Baltimore and 11 vs. Florida This was the second of two set of three consecutive games in double figure assists that Livingston had that season. Against Kentucky (1/3), Waters had another double double but it was points and rebounds with 18 points and 11 rebounds. FREE THROWS Earlier in the year, LSU was on the mark against Samford (11/16), making 19-of-20 for the game, including 16-of-16 in the first half. LSU s lone miss came in the first half with 2:38 to play after LSU made its first three of the night. It marked the fourth time since for LSU to shoot at least 95% when attempting at least 20 FT s in a game: 11/16/2017 W, vs. Samford ; 19-of-20 FTs (95.0%) 2/21/2009 W, vs. Auburn 79-72; 21-of-22 FTs (95.5%) 2/2/2008 L, at Alabama 72-81; 21-of-22 FTs (95.5%) 2/4/1989 L, at Miss. State 79-96; 19-of-20 FTs (95.0%) After nine games, LSU was at an incredible 78.4 percent at the line, but now LSU is still at a good 73.4 percent ( ), fifth in the league. That is still way ahead of the 69.6 percent that LSU shot at the line during the season. In the SEC games, LSU is 66-of-94, or 70.2 percent. While LSU has made 12 more free throws overall than opponents, opponents have made 85 free throws to LSU s 66 in conference games. ABOVE 20 ASSISTS For the third time this year, LSU was over 20 assists in the UNF game (12/22), this time recording 26 assists for the 43 buckets it made. LSU had 29 assists in the Samford win in November and 22 assists in the win over UT-Martin, also in November. LSU has had five games of 30 assists or more, the last coming in December LSU is averaging 14.7 assists per game, sixth in the league. SKYLAR MAYS GOOD ON AND OFF THE FLOOR It all fits in doesn t it pre-med major; 4-plus GPA and starting guard on the team. Last year it was starting point guard for 25 of 31 games. This year it s still somewhat starting point guard because in Coach Wade s system, he believes in having two point-guard types out on the floor to smoothly run the offense through. So far the numbers are good as he is averaging 11.7 points per game, 3.9 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game. In conference play, Mays is averaging 9.7 points and 3.3 assists. Mays has had 12 games in double figure scoring, including 11-of-the-last-14 games. Mays has posted at least five assists in 12 games in his career, five this season. For the season, Mays is 25-of-72 from three-point range (34.7 percent). He has been a consistently good force from the free throw line, making 44-of-51 for the season (86.3%). EPPS POSTS THIRD DOUBLE DOUBLE AT ARKANSAS The four-year senior is working hard to make his final year a good one as he is an example of how much returning players have improved under the tutelage of Coach Wade. Epps had his third double double of the season at Arkansas (1/10) with 13 points and 11 rebounds. In December, it was back-to-back double doubles for the Ball, Louisiana native. After a 26 point, 16 rebounds game against Houston on Dec. 10, Epps came back with another double double of 16 points and 10 rebounds against SFA on Dec. 13. In the two games, Epps scored 42 points and had 26 rebounds. He played 59 minutes, made 13-of-24 field goals, 4-of-8 3 FGs and 12-of-13 free throws. His night of 26 points and 16 rebounds marked just the third time since the start of the season, according to sports-reference.com, that an LSU player has had 25 points or more and 15 or more rebounds in a single game. Epps is also the only one of the three to be on a winning side in their game. Aaron Epps ( ) --- vs. Houston (W) Ben Simmons (1-9-16) at Florida (L) Jordan Mickey ( ) at Miss. But from there his minutes increased and he has started the five-of-the-last-seven games for the Tigers. He has also been in double figures in four games, including 15 against UT Martin (11/29) and the three games prior to Christmas versus Stephen F. Austin (10), Sam Houston (11) and 10 vs. UNF. At A&M, Edwards had eight points, hitting 3-of-6 shots, including a trey. The junior college transfer is averaging 5.6 points a contest. He has made 21 treys. BRANDON SAMPSON His junior season started so well until the first minute of the fourth game, the semifinals of the Maui Invitational when he severely sprained his left ankle (Nov. 22). He missed the next six games and began coming off the bench with his best game at Memphis when he scored 12 points with three treys. He started the SEC play 0-of-9 from the arc, but was returned to the starting lineup for the game against Georgia (1/16). He scored a team-high 17 points, making 6-of-11 field goals, including 3-of-5 treys and both free throws. Now it becomes a case of consistency in game play to put back-to-back double figure games together. Sampson has played 12 games this season with five starts, averaging 7.8 points, having made 12 treys. RANDY ONWUASOR Grad student Randy Onwuasor got the nod for the first five games that Brandon Sampson was out before coming off the bench in recent contests. Onwuasor was on his game in the Arkansas win (1/10), hitting 4-of-6 field goals and all four free throw attempts. His best overall game came in the first game off the bench when he played 17 minutes and hit 5-of-9 field goals, including two treys in a 13-point night. At this point in the season, Onwuasor is averaging 4.5 points per game and 2.1 rebounds. He is 28-of- 59 from the field, making five treys and 15-of-18 from the free throw line. TWO LOUISIANA FRESHMAN COMING OFF BENCH Brandon Rachal of Natchitoches-Central High in Natchitoches and Galen Alexander of Breaux Bridge (Lafayette Christian Academy) have also been looking for playing time with Rachal getting the bulk of the time of the freshmen outside of Waters. Rachal has played in 17 games with a 16.4 minute per game average. He is posting at 4.8 points per game and 2.8 rebounds a game after scoring eight points at Vandy. Alexander, who missed a lot of his senior high school season with knee surgery and was a bit slow in recovery, has played in nine games, including three at Vandy, with a 1.9 points average. WAYDE SIMS GETS FIRST COLLEGE DOUBLE DOUBLE Wayde Sims, the sophomore son of former LSU men s basketball player Wayne Sims, recorded his first college double up December 19 in a 20-minute stunt off the bench against Sam Houston. Sims had 10 points and 10 rebounds to go with a career best three blocks. It was his fourth double figure scoring game this year and the second double figure rebound game at LSU. Sims, who has scored eight points each in four-of-the-last-nine games, is averaging 6.1 points and 3.2 rebounds. He has started eight games and played an average of 18.2 minutes.
