She s 11th in the country with an 8.0 defensive rebounds per game average and her 149 total reboounds ranks 7th in the nation. Series History - High Point UNCG took the edge in the all-time series last season, defeating the Panthers in overtime. At home, the Spartans hold a 9-4 advantage over High Point. 2 Spartan Notables WHAT S IN STORE UNCG and High Point will face off for the 26th time. The Spartans hold a narrow advantage after defeating the Panthers in overtime last season. UNCG looks win win its third-straight in over High Point. It would tie the most consecutive Spartan wins in the series as UNCG has defeated High Point three consecutive times on two other occasions. UNCG started the season off quick, going 4-1 in the first five games. That start was the best five-game start in ten years before dropping sevenconsecutive games. UNCG snapped its longest losing streak in the Trina Patterson era last week with a win at Presbyterian. Ije Ajemba scored a career-best 22 points and pulled down 18 boards in the win. The 18 rebound performance is second-best in the Divison I era for UNCG women s basketball. SCOUTING HIGH POINT High Point enters with a 5-5 record this season. The Panthers had lost three-straight before defeating fellow SoCon school, Western Carolina last Friday. HPU and UNCG have two common opponents in Duke and Norfolk State. Both lost at Duke and High Point escaped Norfolk State with a win. HPU is 2-3 on the road this season, including losses at Virginia Tech and Ohio. The Panthers average 70.5 points per game and allow 69.8 points per contest to earn their 5-5 record. Senior guard Kat Harris leads the Panthers with a 13.7 points per game average. Harris comes off the bench and hit 22 3-pointers, second most on the team behind Camryn Brown. Brown averages 11.7 points per game and has hit 25 3-pointers in a starting role. She also leads the team with 3.9 assists per game. Emma Bockrath averages 12.7 points per game. The junior guard scored a season-high 21 at Duke in a loss. On the boards, High Point is led by the pair of Bockrath and Kennedy Currie. Currie leads the Panthers with 8.0 rebounds per game with 53 defensive rebounds. Bockrath has been tough on the offensive glass as 26 of her 75 total rebounds have gone for a second chance opportunity. SOCON PLAYER OF THE WEEK For her efforts during the week of Dec. 5-11, senior Ije Ajemba earned the Southern Conference s Player of the Week for the first time in her career. Ajemba averaged a double-double during the two games, going for 13.0 points per game and 11.5 rebounds per game. This is the first Player of the Week honor for the Spartans this season. Ajemba hauled down 18 rebounds, the third-most in school history in the Division I record. She was one off the school record that is held by Julie and Alisa Moore. Ajemba added 22 points in the contest as she led UNCG to a win over the Blue Hose. I WANNA GO FAST UNCG has outscored opponents on fast breaks this season. When outscoring opponents of fast breaks this season, UNCG is 3-2. The Spartans have not won when being outscored in transition. YOUTH MOVEMENT UNCG is the youngest team in all of Division I basketball. With 12 of 14 players as underclassmen, 86-percent of Spartans are sophomores or freshman. After losing six players to graduation last season, UNCG reloaded, adding four freshman to go with the core five returning letterwinners. HOMECOMINGS Trina Patterson returned to her alma mater for the first time as the UNCG head coach Saturday evening at Virginia. Patterson was a four-year letterwinner for the Cavaliers from She graduated with her bachelor s degree in rhetoric and communication studies. Last week, graduate manager Ka lia Johnson returned to Cameron Indoor Stadium as the Spartans took on Duke. Johnson was a four-year letter winner for the Blue Devils and started 32 of 34 games as a senior. She recorded one of just seven triple doubles in Duke history. CAPTAINS Sophomores Alexis Pitchford and Te ja Twitty were named team captains at the start of the season. Pitchford and Twitty have appeared in every game in their UNCG careers, making a combined 78 starts over two seasons. HOME COURT ADVANTAGE Last season, the Spartans posted a 14-4 record inside Fleming Gymnasium. In Southern Conference play, UNCG was 6-1 at home. UNCG looks to continue its dominance at home. The Spartans have gone 3-3 at home this season and have two more games against High Point and Lees-McRae before beginning the SoCon season. SOCON COACH OF THE YEAR In her first season on the bench at UNCG, Spartan head coach Trina Patterson was named the Southern Conference Coach of the Year during the season. Under her guidance, UNCG won 20 games, the most for the Spartans since the season. The seven wins in SoCon action are the most for the Spartans since as she turned around a team that finished 0-14 in league play during the season. UNCG s 3-0 start to begin the season was the best three-game start since the season and the 4-1 start was the best five-game start since the season. PRESEASON SOCON RANKINGS/ALL-SOCON The Spartans were picked to finish third and fourth in the league s preseason poll earlier this season. In the coaches poll, UNCG was picked third, earning 34 votes and garnered one first-place vote. The league s media picked UNCG fourth, two points behind third place ETSU with 65 points. Western Carolina 24 Sophomore Nadine Soliman was selected to the Preseason All-SoCon team. She was UNCG s lone selection after earning the SoCon s Freshman of the Year last season. LAST TIME OUT The Blue and Gold used a strong outing from senior Ije Ajemba to snap a seven-game losing skid last week. Ajemba went for a career-best 22 points, shooting 10-of-14 from the field and hauled down a season-high 18 rebounds. Alexus Willey finished with 13 points, shooting 3-for-4 from 3-point range in the victory.
