2 120 HISTORY HISTORY OF UNM WOMEN S BASKETBALL Buried in the December 23, 1898, edition of the Albuquerque Morning Democrat between local tidbits of springcleaning and the ladies library committee meetings, a curious item stands out: the birth of basketball in the Territory of New Mexico. In bloomers and bows with the letters UNM sewn across their chests, two girl s teams, the Olympians and Gladiators, played their first season with vim and interest. At first the girls as they referred to themselves - played in the wooden gym with the doors closed and only girls in the audience. The rules of the game were simple and non-aggressive. Girls played a half-court game with five to ten players on a side. They were not allowed to dribble the ball or guard players and running was only allowed while the ball was in the air. It was not lady-like to participate in sports and physicians even deemed it harmful to the woman s reproductive health. Late in the first season, the girls issued a challenge to the Las Cruces College basketball team for a match in Albuquerque. The two teams played at the Armory Hall on First Street under electric light. UNM won, 4 to 2. It was reported that all girls played with dash and cleverness. In an effort to draw a crowd, a reception and dance followed the game. Admission was 50 cents. In the Girls second season, 1899, the Mirage, the school newspaper, reported the team ordered matching uniforms. The suits are a dark blue with white trimmings, and are very becoming. Early in the second season, boys from the surveying class laid out a regulation court, 45 X 70 feet, for the girls to play on. They took the upright posts from the football field and made basketball goals for the girls. The athletics department was poor and after the basketball season, the same goals were borrowed to construct part of the framework for the back of the net of the tennis court. Support for the girls basketball team is evidenced in Miss Lukens, far left, was the girls gymnastics instructor and introduced the game of basketball to the University of New Mexico and coached both teams. The team pictured above is the Olympians. The University of New Mexico women s basketball team became the first team in history to advance to the NCAA Tournament by an editorial in the Mirage. The editor recommended the girls names be added to the Athletic Association roster, an all-male organization. In January 1900, the newspaper reports that all the university s sporting energy has been turned loose on the little gridiron, and athletics at the university can be summed up in the words basket ball. Although the UNM men formed a basketball team in 1900, they did not give it their all. Records show they had a one-game season that year. In 1902, the Mirage reported that men s practice was marked by poor attendance and listless work. As a result, they dropped from a three-game season in to a one-game season in The ladies continued their play over the next decade, extending invitations to Silver City, Las Vegas, and Gallup in addition to Las Cruces. They continued to organize their team each year and were supported by fellow students. The men s team even practiced with them. The Tri-Alpha fraternity had a reception for them and the Mirage reported the ladies successes beyond their scores declaring their college spirit as the best advertisement possible for the school. In 1912, however, the faculty ruled that the women s basketball team could not travel outside the city to play. As a result, few games were played. The 1920 season was a one-game season played against the Albuquerque Business College. The face of the game changed again in The players formed inter-sorority teams and limited their play to campus. In 1930, the Women s Athletic Association was formed: it sponsored field hockey, tennis, volleyball and swimming, along with basketball. Marie Hays, class of 1936, an athlete in her college days, recalls being told sports competition wasn t good for girls. They said we weren t equipped physically or mentally for competition. That was a real blow to our egos University of New Mexico Women s Basketball

3 HISTORY OF UNM WOMEN S BASKETBALL Despite the lack of support, women continued their sports program and in the 1960s began competing in the Intermountain Conference. In 1971, the Women s Rights Bill passed and UNM women began their long fight for equality of women s sports. Associate Athletic Director Linda Estes led the fight at UNM. When Title IX came about, the question of funding became a legal one, said Estes. If colleges were going to discriminate against women, they ran the risk of having their federal funds cut off. UNM was ahead of its time. In 1972, UNM President Ferrel Heady had gone before the Legislative Finance Committe in Santa Fe and announced his priority for women s athletics even if it meant taking the money from the men s program. The budget went from $4,300 in to $35,000 in He was probably the first president in the nation to come out and do anything like that, Estes said. We thought we were rich. Heady played down his role in the budget increase. I didn t usually have that much success before legislative committees, which probably also means that there was some receptivity in Santa Fe about the cause, Heady said. And that s probably due in part to lobbying efforts of Linda and others. Today, the women s basketball team heads toward a new high, not only in winning competitions but also in earning respect from fans. Basketball is America s game, women s basketball coach Don Flanagan said. The skill level in women s basketball has improved faster then any other sport. Effort and attitude are the main ingredients in sports and the UNM women s basketball team is outstanding. To prove how outstanding womens basktball at UNM has gotten last season the Lobos won at least 22 games for the fifth time in the last six years. The 24 wins in tied the second-highest single-season total in school history, with the team that went Only the team, which went 26-7, won more games. The Lobos finished 17-2 at home, to tie the team that went In , the University of New Mexico women s basketball team advanced to the Sweet 16 for the first time in school history. HISTORY 17-1 for the highest victory total at The Pit in school history. The team s 17 wins were part of a school record 24-game winning streak - which ended with a loss to Drake in quarterfinals of the WNIT. The season will be the 22nd in the history of New Mexico women s basketball. Since the Lobos first game on Jan. 10, 1974, a loss to Gallup they have an overall record of since then and a record since the program was reestablished in Since Don Flanagan took over the program in 1995 the women s basketball program has enjoyed unprecedented success. UNM has had a winning program for seven straight years, setting a new team record. Against the other members of the Mountain West Conference the Lobos are third in total number and winning percentage. Not bad for a program that won only 14 games in the four years before Flanagan s arrival. The Lobos have become a consistent threat to win the Mountain West Conference title the past couple of years, with two tournament championships in 1998 and 2003 and finishing no worse than fourth in each of the last five seasons. New Mexico has also enjoyed postseason play with six consecutive bids to the postseason, including three trips to the NCAA Tournament and a spot last season in the Sweet Sixteen for the first time in school history. The Lobos have also made three appearances in the postseason WNIT and made it all the way to the Championship game in In for the first time ever the University of New Mexico hosted the NCAA Women s Basketball Tournament. UNM hosted both the first and second rounds along with the Midwest Regional. This new tradition will continue in with The Pit hosting the first and second rounds for the second consecutive year. The Pit has also been the site for several NCAA men s games but this is only the second time the women s tournament will be playing at UNM Mountain West Conference Tournament Champions 121

4 122 HISTORY HISTORY AND TRADITION THE LOBO NICKNAME A number of legends have arisen over the years as to how The University of New Mexico got Lobo as its official nickname. When the university began playing football in 1892, the team was simply referred to as The University Boys or Varsities to distinguish themselves from the prep school kids. The student body, at least as early as 1917, began to seriously explore the possibilities for both a mascot and a new name for the student newspaper, which was then called simply the U.N.M. Weekly. Several names for the paper were suggested, including The Rattler, the Sand Devil, the Ki-yo-te and the Cherry and Silver. However, there was no single name that struck a responsive chord among the students and when school opened in the Fall of 1920 the U.N.M. Weekly was still there. On Sept. 22, 1920, sophomore George S. Bryan, editor of the U.N.M. Weekly and student manager of the football team, was present at a Student Council meeting for the purpose of suggesting that the University teams be given a mascot name as at that time many universities had mascot names for their teams. Bryan suggested Lobo, the Spanish word for wolf, as the nickname. The name was enthusiastically received. The Oct. 1 issue of the student paper said, The Lobo is respected for his cunning, feared for his prowess, and is the leader of the pack. It is the ideal name for the Varsity boys who go forth to battle for the glory of the school. All together now; fifteen rahs for the LOBOS. From that beginning, the Lobo nickname has remained with The University of New Mexico for over 70 years. THE LOBO MASCOT After Lobo was adopted as the school s nickname in 1920, it was not long thereafter that a real Lobo became the mascot. Bruno Dieckmann, class of 1902, and by 1920 a successful Albuquerque insurance and real estate agent, acquired the first Lobo for the University at his own expense. At the time he was treasurer of the Athletic Association and one of the most admired men in town. Elsie Ruth Chant, class of 1923, recalled, All of the girls on campus wanted to be seen with him. He was an accomplished concert violinist as well as being a success- ful businessman, and he was rich. He drove a Stutz Bearcat convertible around town and all of the girls would compete to get rides with him. Sometimes he had five or six girls in the car, and when he finally got married, he left broken hearts all over campus. Anyway, he either caught it himself or he paid to have a wolf captured in the Mount Taylor area. The wolf was brought into the school and a student by the name of Bowman would take it on a leash to the football practice area. Apparently, a government trapper named Jim Young caught a wolf pup on the Floyd Lee Ranch near Mount Taylor in western part of the state. The cub became the responsibility of the cheerleaders and it appeared in harness at every football game. However, in the late 20s, a child teased the wolf and was bitten. UNM officials were forced to dispose of it, as one historian put it, for fear other ill-bred brats might become tempted to play with the wolf and bring a damage suit. A live wolf has really never been a part of the athletics scene since. In the early 60s a human mascot named Lobo Louie was created, followed by Lobo Lucy in the early 1980s. Both are now members of the cheerleading squad. CHERRY & SILVER University of New Mexico Women s Basketball 1957 The most common origin of UNM s school colors dates back nearly 100 years. The school colors in the early 1890s were black and gold. Ms. Harriet Jenness, a faculty member who taught drawing, delsarte (drama), penmanship and music, suggested a change in school colors because black and gold did not give a true feeling of New Mexico. She suggested the crimson evening glow of the majestic Sandia mountains to the east. The silver came from when students and faculty took picnics in the Sandias and noted the Rio Grande looked like a silver ribbon winding through the valley below. Her ideas were happily adopted by the faculty and staff. The crimson was later changed to cherry, the color of a Sandia sunset. Miss 1999 Jenness died in 1895, two years before the colors were adopted as official. From , turquoise was integrated into the official school colors for the athletics teams. The football team wore turquoise jerseys at home during those years. Cherry and silver returned as the main colors in THE ALMA MATER The Alma Mater (in Latin means Nourishing or Dear Mother ) was a source of contention at UNM in The original Alma Mater was set to the tune of AnnieLyle, which was an unpopular tune with the student body for a long period of time. The student body voted in a general election to change the Alma Mater and found Glee Club Director Craig Summers to oblige. Actually Mr. Summers and his father wrote the present Alma Mater three years before and called it The New Mexico Hymn. New Mexico, New Mexico We sing to honor thee. This golden haze of college days Will live in memory. This praise we sing will ever ring With truth and loyalty New Mexico, your fame we know Will last eternally. THE UNM FIGHT SONG The Fight Song was written in The music was written by Dean Lena Clauve, who served the University for 32 years as a professor of music education and as the Dean of Women. Dr. George St. Clair, professor in the English Department, wrote the lyrics. The song was originated as a closing number to the faculty variety show sponsored by the UNM Faculty Club in Carlisle Gym in order to raise money to cancel a sizable debt incurred in publishing the Mirage (yearbook). It was reported that enough money was raised to cancel the debt and that the high class entertainment was table conversation throughout Albuquerque for weeks afterward. Hail to thee, New Mexico, Thy loyal sons are we. Marching down the field we go, Fighting for thee. RAH! RAH! RAH! Now we pledge our faith to thee, Never shall we fail. Fighting ever, yielding never. HAIL! HAIL! HAIL!

36 UNIVERSITY UNM HALL OF HONOR Established by the University of New Mexico Alumni Lettermen s Association in 1986, the UNM Athletic Hall of Honor serves to perpetuate the mission of intercollegiate athletics at the University of New Mexico. Its goals are to promote a sense of pride among Alumni Lettermen, the University and the community; to preserve UNM s athletics history and traditions; and to recognize annually - by public ceremony - qualified individuals, groups and athletics teams from UNM and to enshrine their collective accomplishments. In addition, the Hall of Honor helps current UNM student-athletes by allocating financial proceeds in the UNM Alumni Lettermen s Scholarship Endowment Fund so that deserving student-athletes, whose eligibility on the playing field has expired, may complete the work necessary to earn their respective degrees.
