The Beavers (6-1 overall) matched their best start to a season since LaVonda Wagner s first season as Oregon State s head coach, , by turning the ball over just six times. 4 Head Coach LaVonda Wagner Now entering her fourth season as head coach of the Beavers, LaVonda Wagner has molded Oregon State into a program that expects success on the court and off it. Her student-athletes work hard on the court to be successful as a team. They work hard off it to be valuable citizens in the Corvallis community and to succeed in the classroom. In , Wagner s leadership of the Oregon State program produced a host of successes. Oregon State saw its players recognized on the Pac-10 level, including a Player of the Week award after an effort that nearly set a single-game conference record, an All-Conference honoree and three Beavers recognized for their work in the classroom with All-Academic Honorable Mention honors. Wagner began the process of rebuilding Beaver basketball when she was hired as the program s fourth head coach on April 15, Since that date, Wagner and the Beavers have made upward progress to becoming a dangerous Pac-10 club. And Wagner has planned this from day one. Wagner made an immediate impact after taking ownership of the Oregon State program. She guided the Beavers to a overall record and a postseason Women s National Invitation Tournament berth in during her inaugural season as a head coach. The Beavers posted a 10-game improvement overall one of just eight programs in the nation to show at least a 10-game improvement from the previous season and finished with a 7-11 Pacific-10 Conference record after garnering just one conference victory the previous year. Wagner was named Oregon State s Women s Sport Coach of the Year by the Corvallis Gazette-Times newspaper and The Oregonian newspaper listed her as one of its Top 25 most influential people in sports for the state. Wagner came to Oregon State with a winning pedigree. She accumulated 17 years of experience at Duke, Illinois and East Tennessee State. She posted 300 wins as an assistant and was involved in nine consecutive postseason appearances. Accustomed to success, Wagner has coached in the NCAA Final Four, two NCAA Elite Eight games, and two NCAA Sweet 16 appearances. A successful student-athlete as well, Wagner earned National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) All-America honors in basketball and volleyball in 1986 at Mars Hill College in North Carolina. On Oct. 23, 1998, Wagner was inducted into the Mars Hill Hall of Fame. Oregon State sophomore Talisa Rhea set the Pacific-10 Conference record for three-pointers, knocking down 10 in the Beavers victory over Sacramento State at legendary Gill Coliseum. The game marked the regular season opener for the Oregon State women s basketball team. Rhea posted the fourth-most points in school history with 42 points set two Pac-10 records; the 10 three-pointers and 19 threepointers attempted. The last player to set the Pac-10 three-pointer record was Stanford s Molly Goodenbour in 1992 against Tennessee. All of the credit goes to my teammates for getting me open, giving me the ball and I was just in the right place and was able to hit a couple shots, Rhea said. We were just running our offense, trying to execute, working on the little things we have been working on in practice and there is still room for improvement. We still have to fix up a few things, but my teammates did a good job of giving me the ball. The Pac-10 record setting three-pointer gave the Beavers their 100th point of the game, which is the first time they have scored 100 since a victory over Washington in I am very happy with the way we executed our game plan tonight, Oregon State head coach LaVonda Wagner said. We knew that they would come in here looking to shoot deep threes. We also knew that they pretty much started and played five guards. And so our defensive mentality had to be one where we stuck together and really helped each other. This is a transition basketball team we played tonight and the big thing was that we wanted to rebound so we would take away their run and we also wanted to have runs of our own. At the half Rhea had already set a new personal best in points scored with 25 and had made seven three-pointers. She added 17 points in the second half to finish with 42, 18 points more than her previous high of 24 set last season. In that 24-point effort last season, Rhea had previously set the Oregon State single-game record with eight three-pointers. GAME 2 - Oregon State 69, Houston 47 November 19 Corvallis, Ore. Sophomores Talisa Rhea and Alex Mitchell led the way offensively for the Oregon State women s basketball Wednesday night as the Beavers improved to 2-0 this season with a victory over Houston at legendary Gill Coliseum. Rhea led all scorers with 18 points on 5-of-13 shooting from the floor, including four three-pointers. She added six rebounds and four assists and stole the ball twice. The Pacific-10 Conference Player of the Week was also 4-for-4 from the free throw line while seeing 36 minutes on the floor. Mitchell added a career-best 16 points in coming off the bench. She was 6-for-9 from the floor and was a perfect 4-for-4 from the freethrow line. Mitchell added seven rebounds -- three on the offensive boards. Oregon State dominated the boards, posting 45 to the Cougars 30. Offensively, the Beavers also had 15 assists, led by Mercedes Fox-Griffin, who had a season-high seven. Houston shot just.333 from the field compared to OSU s.421 clip. I would really like to congratulate my team on an excellent first half of basketball, head coach LaVonda Wagner said. To open up the game we played really well. We executed our offense, we were able to get some second-chance looks at the basket and we rebounded the basketball. And we got some key stops. Alex came in and gave us a spark off the bench and did a really nice job and gave us a post presence on both ends, both offensively and defensively. Tiffany Ducker had game high 13 rebounds, 12 of which came on the defensive end. She added seven points, stole the ball four times and recorded one block. The Beavers opened up a 28-point lead at halftime thanks to a 29-4 run in which they held Houston scoreless for nearly seven minutes. Oregon State shot 50 percent from the floor while the Cougars were at 24 percent. The Beavers also managed four threepointers in the half all from Rhea, who now has a Pac-10 leading 14 on the season while Houston was held to zero.
