1 Surprising Vols Receive Fifth Postseason Bid In Six Seasons Entering the season, not much was expected from the Tennessee Volunteers. Most preseason publications had picked the Vols to finish fifth or sixth in the SEC s six-team Eastern Division and Ron Slay was ignored by virtually all preseason awards entering his senior campaign after suffering a devastating knee injury midway through his junior season. But, the one thing no one could foresee was how big the Vols heart was. By the time the smoke cleared the Vols had recorded the 70th winning season and made a mark as one of the top teams in the nation s top conference. Overall, UT finished the season with a record and finished fourth in the SEC East with a 9-7 conference record. Tennessee s 9-7 league record ranked in a tie for the fourth-best in the entire Southeastern Conference, not just the SEC East. One of the most exciting finishes in school history highlights a season full of memorable wins for the Volunteers. Playing Georgia Tech in Atlanta s Philips Arena, Jon Higgins scored five points in the game s final second, including a half court heave at the buzzer to give the Vols a win over the Yellow Jackets. In UT s final game before beginning SEC play, Slay scored a career-high 38 points in a victory over New Mexico. His 38 points were the most by a Vol since Allan Houston scored 43 against LSU in Once conference season began, Tennessee picked up a road win at Ole Miss on a Stanley Asumnu offensive rebound and follow with 2.6 seconds left. Later, the Vols began a six-game winning streak with a win over South Carolina. During the streak, Tennessee won its second game in a row at Auburn, defeated 17th-ranked Georgia, won their first game ever at Arkansas Bud Walton Arena and upset fourth-ranked Florida. UT finished the regular season with a win over 23rd-ranked Mississippi State on the Vols Senior Day and a then traveled to Nashville where the Vols completed the season sweep with in-state rival Vanderbilt. When it came time for the postseason, Tennessee was considered a legitimate contender for the NCAA Tournament but, instead, received an invitation to play in the National Invitation Tournament. When the Vols met the Georgetown Hoyas in the first round of the NIT, it marked the fifth time in six seasons that Tennessee had participated in a postseason tournament. The final buzzer at the end of the season marked the end of their careers for five seniors. Drew Clemmons, Higgins, Thaydeus Holden, Slay and Zach Turner each were in the starting lineup for their final regular season game against Mississippi State on March 5. During their four-year careers Tennessee recorded an record that included a mark in SEC action. They helped the Vols to an SEC Eastern Division and an overall SEC title in 2000 and led UT to two NCAA Tournament appearances (2000 and 2001) and one showing in the NIT (2003). Slay made his final season in orange and white a memorable one. After scoring 31 points in the season opener against Gardner-Webb, he led the SEC in scoring all year and finished with a 21.2 point per game scoring average. 14 Six Teams Dancing Again The SEC tied its conference record for NCAA Tournament bids in 2003 with six bids for the fifth straight season, tied with the Big XII in number of bids for the 2003 NCAA Tournament. The league tied the record set in 1987 which was again accomplished in 1999, 2000, 2001 and The SEC closed the season with six wins in the 2003 NCAA Tournament, tied for fourth in the nation. The SEC did not have a team reach the Final Four for just the fourth time in the last 11 years when Kentucky was eliminated in the Elite Eight. The 2003 season also marked the 14th straight year the SEC had at least one team advance to the Sweet 16 (Auburn and Kentucky) and the ninth time in 11 years that the conference had a team advance to the Elite Eight. SEC Second In Postseason Bids With 15 postseason bids for men s and women s basketball, the SEC once again was among the leaders in the nation in postseason appearances in the NCAA and NIT tournaments. The SEC set the record with 19 bids in 1999 and again in The SEC has lead the nation seven times in the last nine years. SEC men s teams and women s teams garnered seven and eight bids, respectively (Men s - 6 NCAA, 1 NIT; Women s - 7 NCAA, 1 WNIT) National Invitation Tournament In 2003, Tennessee was the lone SEC team in the field, making their first NIT appearance since 1996 and 10th overall. UT lost to Georgetown in the first round and finished with a record in NIT action. The Commodores were the last SEC team to win the NIT title. Vanderbilt captured the 1990 title with a win over Saint Louis. SEC teams have combined for a (.549) record in 72 appearances (for current membership, (.546) in 78 appearances) in the NIT. SEC Places Six Teams in NCAA Tournament The SEC has had six teams in the NCAA Tournament field in each of the last five seasons. The Southeastern Conference led the nation in Overall RPI during the last four seasons and was first or second over the same span in Non-Conference RPI. Below is a breakdown of the SEC s national ranking in Overall and Non-Conference RPI over the last 10 seasons, entering the NCAA Tournament. Poll Worthy The SEC is the only conference in the nation to have all of its teams ranked at least one week in the Associated Press top 20 (excluding preseason polls) since Simply stated, every SEC team has been a top 20 team nationally at one point in the last six seasons. Road Warriors With a 5-7 record the last week of the regular season, visiting teams collective road conference record finished at (.344). Breaking down the record shows the road teams had a (.295) record in weekday conference games and a (.385) record in weekend SEC games. In , SEC road teams did not fare well with a (.323) record. The breakdown was on weekday night conference games and on weekend conference tilts. Close Calls Winning conference games was not easy in 2003 as evidenced by some tight games decided by the slimmest of margins. Of the 96 conference played in 2003, 33 were decided by six points or less, including five overtime games. Meaning 34.4 percent of league games were won in the final minutes. 71st Season Of Southeastern Conference Play Since the season, the SEC has had 12 difference schools win the SEC title, including former conference member Georgia Tech. Kentucky leads the way with 42 titles (43 including its vacated 1988 title) followed by LSU and Tennessee with eight, Alabama with seven, Mississippi State with five, and both Florida and Vanderbilt with three. Auburn and Arkansas have two each while Georgia, South Carolina and former member Georgia Tech have one each. 70 Is The Magic Number SEC teams own a (.872) record when scoring 70 or more points in a game. When holding opponents to under 70 points in a game, SEC teams also have a (.785) record. Here s a look at how each team has fared when scoring 70 or more and holding opponents to under 70 points.
