The Huskies will open the trip facing #11/7 Stanford (11-3, 2-0 Pac-10) on Thursday, Jan. 8, at 7 p.m. at Maples Pavilion in Palo Alto, Calif. UW will then make the trek to Berkeley for a contest with #13/9 California (11-2, 2-0 Pac-10) on Sunday, Jan. 11, at 12:30 p.m. at Haas Pavilion. Sunday s contest will be televised live to a national audience on FSN. The Huskies snapped a brief two-game losing streak with their win over the Cougars and will look to continue their winning ways this week. Both Stanford and Cal opened the Pac-10 slate with 2-0 records, completing road sweeps of Arizona State and Arizona last week. Both the Cardinal and Golden Bears have also been ranked among the top teams in the nation all season long. Stanford garnered as high as a No. 2 preseason national ranking and Cal was ranked as high as third in Nov. 24 and Dec. 1 Associated Press polls. SPOLE-stra Scouting The Huskies: Washington opened Pac-10 play on a winning note last week, defeating Washington State, 71-58, in Seattle. The win snapped a brief two-game losing skid for the Huskies who also won their 27th-straight game in the all-time series with the Cougars. UW split both its games last week, wrapping up its non-conference slate with a loss to then-no. 22 Kansas State at home on Dec. 30. The Huskies are back on the road after a short two-game homestand. UW played nearly the entire month of December away from Bank of America Arena. The Huskies endured a bit of an up-and-down non-conference slate, but took on five teams that went to postseason play last year (NCAA or WNIT Tournaments), including four opponents that were either ranked or receiving votes in national polls. UW opened the year 0-2, then won three of four, but finished non-conference play losing three of four games. Junior guard/forward Sami Whitcomb led the Huskies in their last game versus Washington State with a team-high 17 point scoring effort. Whitcomb, a co-captain with senior guard/forward Michelle Augustavo, is averaging 11.0 points per game and has a team-high 27 steals. She is currently ranked third in the Pac-10 with 2.5 steals per game. Junior forward/center Laura McLellan is averaging a team-high 11.5 points per game and is shooting a team-high 51.5 percent clip from the field. McLellan is also a steady inside presence, averaging 4.4 rebounds. Augustavo is the Huskies third-leading scorer with 8.6 points per game. A long-range shooting specialist, she begins the week fifth in the Pac-10 with 2.2 three-pointers per game. Junior forward Lydia Young, who has started the last two games, leads the squad with 4.8 rebounds per game. Injuries continue to plague the young Huskies as starting freshman guard/forward Kristi Kingma suffered a high ankle sprain in UW s last game with WSU and could be sidelined for up to three weeks. Junior guard Sara Mosiman has missed the last two games with a sprained ankle as well, and redshirtfreshman forward/center Mackenzie Argens has missed the last seven games after undergoing surgery on her left knee to repair torn meniscus, Dec. 3. Last week did mark the collegiate debut of heralded freshman forward Liz Lay, who missed the first nine games recovering from microfracture surgery on her right knee in February. Lay has come off the bench in the last two contests, scoring five and four points, respectively. The Huskies are led by second-year head coach Tia Jackson. This year s squad returns seven players and one starter from last year s team that finished the season with a record and placed sixth in the Pac-10 with an 8-10 league mark. Welcomed to the fold are eight newcomers including five freshmen, two junior college transfers and UCLA transfer Regina Rogers who will sit out the season due to NCAA rules. Of the Huskies seven returners, five are upperclassmen led by the senior duo of Augustavo and forward Heidi McNeill. Huskies In The Midst of Tough Stretch: The Huskies are in the midst of a tough stretch in their schedule. Beginning Dec. 18 versus No. 1 UConn and ending this week in the Bay Area, Washington has or will face five teams either ranked or receiving votes in a seven-game span. In addition to UConn, UW then faced Florida State (which received votes) on Dec. 19 and #22/18 Kansas State on Dec. 30. This week s opponents - Stanford and Cal - have been highly ranked all season long as well. Against Ranked Opponents: Washington is 0-2 against ranked opponents this season, the losses coming to No. 1 UConn (Dec. 18) and then-no. 22 Kansas State (Dec. 30). UW is overall against ranked opponents, including a 7-56 all-time mark in road contests. The last time UW defeated a Top-25 team (Associated Press) came against then-no. 9 California in Seattle, on March 2, 2008 (74-66). In fact, UW s last two wins against ranked opponents both came against the Golden Bears. The other victory came Feb. 8, 2007 in Berkeley in overtime (79-76). NoCal Connections: Junior forward/center Laura McLellan is a Northern California native, hailing from Campbell, Calif., near San Jose. UW head coach Tia Jackson also spent time in the area, serving as an assistant coach at Stanford under Tara VanDerveer during the season. Scouting Stanford: Stanford will be making its Pac-10 home debut when it hosts Washington on Thursday evening. The Cardinal has won three-straight games, including its first two league contests against Arizona State (64-61) and Arizona (70-61). The 11-3 Cardinal has only suffered losses to ranked opponents - then-no. 19 Baylor (65-81), then-no. 8 Duke (52-56) and then-no. 11 Tennessee (69-79 ot). Junior forward/center Jayne Appel leads the squad with 13.8 ppg and 1.0 rpg. Sophomore forward Kayla Pedersen is not far behind, averaging 12.2 points and 7.4 rebounds. Sophomore guard Jeanette Pohlen (10.4 ppg) and freshman forward Nnemkadi Ogwumike (10.0) round out the Stanford players in double-figure scoring. Stanford leads the Pac-10 in scoring offense with 75.6 points per effort. The Cardinal is holding opponents to an average of 58.1 ppg. All-Time Series With Stanford: Washington trails the all-time series with Stanford, The Huskies have lost the last five-straight games and nine of the last 10 dating back to the the season. UW s last win in the series came in Seattle, a victory on Dec. 22, Stanford swept the season series last year, winning in Seattle (Feb. 29) and in Palo Alto (Dec. 30). The Huskies haven t faired too well in Maples as of late, losing the last three meetings there by 26 or more points. UW s last win at Maples Pavilion came on Feb. 18, 1999

3 (74-62). The Huskies are 4-19 overall against Stanford in Palo Alto. Scouting California: The Golden Bears (11-2, 2-0 Pac-10) will host Washington State on Thursday before entertaining the Huskies for Sunday s matinee. Cal is coming off a sweep in the desert, defeating Arizona (56-46) and Arizona State (54-53) to give them an early conference lead with Stanford. The Bears only two losses came in non-conference action, losing to then-no. 22 TCU (73-82) and then-no. 5 Oklahoma (75-86). Senior forward/center Ashley Walker leads the squad and the Pac-10 with 21.5 points per game. She is also averaging a team-high 7.9 boards per game. Junior guard Alexis Gray-Lawson is averaging 12.1 ppg and 4.4 rpg. As a team, Cal is averaging 70.7 ppg, while holding opponents to a mere 53.8 ppg. All-Time Series With California: Washington leads the all-time series with California, The Huskies and Golden Bears have split their season meetings the last two years. UW upset then-no. 9 Cal in both teams regular season finale last year (March 2) in Seattle. The Huskies win over the Bears knocked them out of contention for a share of the 2008 Pac-10 title with Stanford. Cal won the meeting in Berkeley, (Dec. 28). UW s last win at Haas Pavilion came on Feb. 8, 2007, a dramatic overtime victory. The Huskies are 18-8 overall against California in Berkeley. Last Game Recap - UW 71, WSU 58: Junior guard/forward Sami Whitcomb scored a team-high 17 points, including 13 in the second-half, to lead Washington women s basketball to a victory over Washington State in both teams Pac-10 opener at Bank of America Arena, Saturday. The victory improved Washington s winning streak in the all-time series with WSU to 27 games, including 16-straight at home. Joining Whitcomb in double-figures for the Huskies were junior guard/forward Laura McLellan (10 points) and senior guard/forward Michelle Augustavo (10 points). Augustavo s play off the bench was especially key as UW lost starting guard Kristi Kingma to a sprained left ankle in the first-half. McLellan and senior forward Heidi McNeill led UW on the rebounding end with six boards apiece, while sophomore guard Sarah Morton dished seven assists. The Huskies shot a season-best 52 percent clip from the field (26-of-50), while in turn holding the Cougars to a 30.2 percent average (19-of-63). Guard April Cook led three Cougars in double-figures with 17 points, while guard Jazmine Perkins (12 points) and forward Rosie Tarnowski (10) rounded out the top-three scorers for WSU. Ebonee Coates grabbed a game-high 12 board as well. The Huskies certainly didn t have an easy time early on, as the Cougars opened the game with an 11-3 run. But Washington chipped away at the WSU advantage and came back to even the score twice late in the first-half. Trailing by two (22-24) with 4:39 remaining until the intermission, the Huskies closed out the half with a 15-4 run - including a 9-0 spurt - to take the lead for good. UW led by nine at halftime (37-28) and sped out to a 12-0 run to start the second stanza and never looked back, holding the Cougars without a field for the first three and a half minutes of the period. Washington s largest lead was a 25-point spread with 4:59 remaining in the game. Mac Attack: Junior forward/center Laura McLellan is in the midst of a breakout year. McLellan entered the season with a career scoring average of 4.2 points per game and is now leading the squad with an 11.5 scoring average and a 51.5 field goal shooting percentage. She has reached double-figures in scoring in eight of 11 games, including four straight to open the year and has four double-digit efforts in the last five games. McLellan scored a career-high 22-points versus Northern Colorado (Dec. 21), a game in which she shot 8-of-19 from the field and was 6-of-6 from the free-throw line. She also tallied 10 points against No. 1 UConn and 11 in UW s win over Florida State in Cancun. McLellan is second on the team with 4.4 rebounds and has a team-high 20 offensive boards. Sink It Sami: Like she was last year, junior guard/forward Sami Whitcomb is one of Washington s most versatile and talented players. Whitcomb is second on the squad with an 11.0 scoring average, while also leading the team with 2.5 steals. Whitcomb tallied back-to-back 18-point scoring efforts versus Clemson (Nov. 30) and Pepperdine (Dec. 3) and has seven double-figure scoring games this year. Also a long-range threat, Whitcomb is second on the team with 15 three-point field goals made. On the other end of the floor, much of the Huskies defensive success can be attributed to the Southern California native, as she ranked third in the Pac-10 in steals as of Jan. 5. She grabbed a season-high seven steals in UW s with Boise State (Nov. 23), just two away from her career-high and four away from UW s school record. Augustavo Hitting The Mark: Senior guard/forward Michelle Augustavo has been a key off the bench for Washington as of late, racking five double-figure scoring efforts in the last eight games. She turned in back-to-back season-high 15-point scoring performances versus Seattle University (Nov. 28) and Clemson (Nov. 30) and tallying a third-straight double-figure effort with 12 points at Pepperdine (Dec. 3). A long-range shooting specialist, she leads the Huskies and ranks fifth in the Pac-10 with 2.2 three-pointers per game. All 15 of her points in the win over Seattle U came from three-point range and she was nearly perfect from long-distance (5-of-7). Already earning accolades, Augustavo was named to the 2008 Husky Classic All-Tournament Team. Freshmen Making An Impact: Washington has received substantial contributions from two true freshmen - guard/forward Kristi Kingma and forward Mollie Williams. Before suffering a sprained left ankle in UW s last game with WSU, Kingma started the first 10 games and is fourth on the team in scoring with 8.5 points per game. Kingma has reached double-figures in scoring six times, including a pair of season-best performances of 14 points at Pepperdine (Dec. 3) and versus Kansas State (Dec. 30). Williams has tallied two double-figure scoring efforts with 10 versus Seattle U (Nov. 28) and 12 versus Clemson (Nov. 30). Williams has played in every game, earning two starts during Heidi McNeill s absence due to injury. In her first career start versus Clemson, Williams made the most of her opportunity, turning in careerbest numbers of 12 points and eight rebounds. Her inside presence has especially been felt on the defensive end as she has already recorded 11 blocks - tops on the team and tied for sixth in the Pac-10. Heralded Frosh Lay Makes Debut: Freshman forward Liz Lay, the Huskies top-ranked incoming recruit this year, made her collegiate debut, against Kansas State on Dec. 30. Lay had been recovering from microfracture surgery performed on her right knee in February of last year which caused her to miss UW s first nine games. The Oklahoma City native made her presence known early, scoring five points and grabbing two rebounds in eight minutes on the floor. She was 2-of-4 from the field and 1-of-2 from the line. Lay followed that up with four points, one rebound and one steal against Washington State this past Saturday. Defensive-Minded: The Huskies look to generate offense from their defense and have done so with success. Washington is 4-0 when holding opponents under 60 points and on three occassions has forced its opponents to commit 30 or more turnovers (32 vs. BSU; 30 vs. SU; 31 vs. Pepperdine) and collected 15 or more steals (23 vs. BSU; 17 vs. SU; 15 vs. Pepperdine). Much of the defensive charge has been led by junior guard Sami Whitcomb who ranks third in the Pac-10 with 2.5 steals per game (27 overall). Freshman guard Kristi Kingma is also tied for 11th in the Pac-10 in steals (1.6). As a team, UW is third in the Pac-10 in steals per game (11.1). Home Sweet Home: The Huskies are 3-3 at home this season, including a 1-0 mark in Pac-10 play thus far at Bank of America Arena. Washington is traditionally tough to beat on its home court, owning an all-time record of (.793) at Bank of America Arena at Hec Edmundson Pavilion. The Huskies were 10-5 at home last year after 12-2 and 12-3 seasons in and , respectively. Reaching A Milestone: Washington s win over Pepperdine on Dec. 3 was the program s 650th all-time victory. The all-time record for the Husky women s basketball program stands at Leader of the Pack: Now with one year of head coaching experience under her belt, Tia Jackson is in the midst of her second campaign as the Huskies' Top Dawg in Last season, a young UW squad garnered a record, with highlights including a come-from behind last-second shot win over eventual NCAA Tournament team Purdue and a dramatic upset of ninth-ranked California in the regular season finale. UW finished sixth in the Pac-10 standings with an 8-10 league mark. Jackson had three players earn conference honors at season's end, led by senior Emily Florence's nod to the All-Pac-10 third-team and the inaugural Pac-10 Defensive Team. Sophomore Sami Whitcomb was tabbed to the Pac- 10 Defensive honorable mention squad and Katelan Redmon earned Pac-10 All-Freshman Team acclaim. The springtime also saw the graduation of Jackson's three seniors - Florence, Dominique Banks and Andrea Plouffe. She was named the eighth head coach in the history of the women s basketball program on April 6, Jackson came to UW after a successful 11-year tenure in the assistant coaching ranks. Before arriving on Montlake, she spent the previous two seasons as an assistant coach at Duke, where she was considered by many experts as one of the top recruiters in the country. She helped lead the Blue Devils to the NCAA championship game in 2006 and the NCAA Sweet 16 in In addition to working at Duke, Jackson served as an assistant coach at UCLA ( ), Stanford ( ), and Virginia Commonwealth ( ). As an assistant coach, she has been to four NCAA Tournaments and one NCAA Final Four. Jackson played her collegiate career at the University of Iowa where she was a two-time All-Big Ten selection and helped lead the Hawkeyes to the 1993 NCAA Final Four. The Coaches Poll was announced Oct. 24 and the media poll was announced Nov. 13. Eight-time defending champion and 2008 NCAA Championship finalist Stanford was tabbed to win this year s league crown by both groups. Dawgs Making A Difference: The Washington women s basketball program is extremely active in community service, making it a priority to give back to the local community. The Huskies have already started monthly visits to Seattle Children s Hospital which will continue through the school year. There the Huskies interact with patients and patients families, playing games, doing arts and crafts, or whatever might be asked of them. Most recently, players volunteered at the Seattle Walk for Hope in the beginning of October - a breast cancer fundraiser and awareness event held at Magnuson Park. UW players also worked this past summer with a program called Sisters in Strength headed up by former Roosevelt HS and Iowa State star, Lindsey Wilson. It is an exercise, mentorship and life skills program for teenage girls in foster care within the Seattle area. Each of the young girls in the program is matched with a collegiate athlete for sessions of strength training and fitness, as well as workshops on goal setting, nutrition, self-esteen building and overall well-roundedness.
