The Lady Rebels are hosting their annual Thanksgiving tournament this weekend, as Dartmouth, Middle Tennessee and UC Santa Barbara are all making the trip to the for the 2018 Lady Rebel Round-Up. UNLV will be looking to win the tournament for the second time in the past three years. 2 HEAD COACH KATHY OLIVIER When UNLV was searching for its next women s basketball coach -- a person that could return the proud program to its place among the nation s best -- it didn t have to look far. The school turned to one of its own by hiring former Lady Rebel All-American Kathy Olivier as the eighth full-time head coach in UNLV women s basketball history on April 22, The Lady Rebels immediately showed their renewed enthusiasm for their new coach, and the team was the talk of the conference after an inspiring run to the Mountain West Conference Tournament semifinals as the sevenseed. Olivier s first recruit to the program, Jamie Smith, would 10 months later became the firstever Lady Rebel to be named MWC Freshman of the Year. In the Lady Rebels continued their climb back to prominence under Olivier, and posted several impressive upsets, including road wins at Utah and New Mexico and a home victory over eventual Sweet 16 participant San Diego State. Olivier s best season would come in , as UNLV finished the campaign with a record, an 11-win improvement over the previous year that ranked as the sixthbest in the nation, and the Lady Rebels returned to the postseason for the first time since with a trip to the WNIT. The past three seasons have been the best stretch of her time on the UNLV bench, as the Lady Rebels have averaged 20 wins per season over that stretch, played in back-to-back WNIT Tournaments, and won their first-ever Mountain West regular season championship title thanks to last year s 14-4 mark (19-12 overall). Olivier came to UNLV after serving as head coach at UCLA for 15 years (from May 3, 1993, to March 11, 2008). While head coach of the Bruins she helped produce two Pac-10 Players of the Year, three Pac-10 Freshmen of the Year, a Pac-10 team championship, a Pac- 10 Tournament Championship and a trip to the 1999 Elite Eight. The former Kathy Ricks, Olivier was a standout player at Cal State Fullerton and then at UNLV, where she earned All-America honors while averaging a team-high 16.3 points and 5.7 rebounds in the season. She still ranks on several all-time lists at UNLV, as her career 18.1 ppg average is the second-highest in team history. A LOOK AT UNLV VS. UC SANTA BARBARA... The last time the teams met though was in December of 2011, when current assistant coach Mia Bell hit a driving jumper at the buzzer for a two-point win in Santa Barbara. Looking at potential opponents on Sunday in the consolation or championship game, UNLV has never met Dartmouth before in women s basketball, while in the lone meeting with Middle Tennessee, the Blue Raiders claimed an overtime win in the consolation game of the Club Shootout on Dec. 6, PLAYERS TO WATCH... The Lady Rebels bring back the most experienced lineups in the Mountain West and one of the top in the nation, as four returning senior starters from a year ago will be in the opening night starting lineup. It starts with guard Nikki Wheatley, starting for the fifth straight year in the Lady Rebel backcourt. A year ago she averaged 13.6 points per game while earning MW honorable mention honors, and ranked among the league leaders in assists, steals and rebounds. Center Katie Powell is back after a season in which she earned All-MW honors thanks to averaging 15.5 points and 8.7 rebounds per contest, both of which lead the returning Lady Rebels. Forward Paris Strawther will be in her third year as a starter, and nearly missed averaging double-figures as she recorded 9.3 ppg and 6.3 rpg. Jordyn Bell was a first-year starter a year ago, and was the team s fifth-leading scorer with 7.3 ppg. UNLV is expected to once again be one of the top rebounding teams in the Mountain West after grabbing 40.3 rebounds per game and holding a +5.6 rebound margin. The Lady Rebels also were strong on defense in , holding teams under 40% shooting (39.7%) and forcing 16.2 turnovers per game. STRAWTHER OUT... Senior forward Paris Strawther is currently sidelined due to a broken pinky finger on her left hand. The injury happened during shootaround before the Lady Rebels loss at UC Irvine on Nov. 13. Senior center Katie Powell is one of 20 players in the nation named to the Lisa Lesie Award Watch List, which is awarded to the top center in women s college basketball. Powell earned her spot on the award after finishing in the top 10 in the Mountain West in both scoring and rebounding a year ago while picking up all-leauge honors. She is one of the top four returning scorers and rebounding in the league for her senior season. CHALLENGING THE BEST... As always, the Lady Rebels will play one of the toughest schedules in the Mountain West, as the Lady Rebels could play a potential 17 contests against teams that reached the postseason a year ago. That includes the first three matchups of the season, against Wright State (WNIT), UC Irvine (WBI) and Gonzaga (NCAA), while the Lady Rebels could meet Middle Tennesse, a WNIT team as well, on the second day of the Lady Rebel Round-Up. December won t get any easy for UNLV, with home games against USC and potentially Utah along with a trip to Cameron Indoor Stadium for the first-ever meeting with Duke, a preseason top-25 squad. WATCHING THE LADY REBELS... UNLV is scheduled to have all 16 of its home games live streamed this season. Fourteen of the games will be on the Mountain West Network, available at UNLVRebels.com. All Mountain West Network programming is also available on Stadium, which can be accessed through WatchStadium. com, Stadium mobile apps and over-the-top connected devices (such as Apple TV, Roku, Sling TV, Amazon Fire and XBox).
