The Bengals will also take on Cal State Fullerton on Sunday in Las Vegas. Friday s game will kick-off at 6 p.m., while Sunday s match will begin at noon. About Idaho State If head coach Allison Gibson s first year at Idaho State was any indication of things to come, then buckle your seat belts and hold on tight. Gibson s first year consisted of Big Sky Conference record, a Big Sky regular season title, a Big Sky Tournament Championship, an NCAA College Cup appearance, and Big Sky Coach of the Year honors. Now, she returns eight of the 11 starters from the 2006 squad that earned all of the previously mentioned accolades, and will add her first full recruiting class to the mix. Idaho State won t have a hard time looking for motivation for the new season. The team plans on using last season s final game as a stimulus for the 2007 campaign. The Bengals were 30 seconds away from upsetting 11th-ranked Utah on their home field in the first round of the NCAA College Cup. This year s team won t have to look far for leadership. Each of Idaho State s four seniors cover a different position on the field. Forward Natalie Graham, midfielder Michelle Okumura, defender Jill Christofferson, and goalkeeper Maren Eves each return for their senior seasons. Bengals Open 2007 Campaign with 3-1 Exhibition Win over Utah Valley Idaho State used three second half goals to defeat Utah Valley 3-1 in a season-opening exhibition match Aug. 24 at Davis Field. Jenny Ford, Jana Boehler, and Taylor Powell each found the back of the net in the win. Idaho State found itself down early as Utah Valley s Adrienne Schneider found the back of the net in the eighth minute. Shantae Adams assisted on the score. The goal gave Utah Valley a 1-0 lead at the half. The Bengals battled back in the second period as Ford helped to tie the game with a score in the 65th minute. Ford received a touch pass from Annamarie Hofstetter and dribbled past two defenders to put the ball in the net. Boehler, who sat out all of last season with an illness, gave ISU the lead in the 74th minute as she received a ball from Michelle Okumura and then sent it to the right corner of the net from 25 yards out for the goal. Powell, playing in her first collegiate game, secured the win for Idaho State, finding the back of the net in the 89th minute. The goal was assisted by Okumura and Lauren Ryan. 2 IDAHO STATE SOCCER ALLISON GIBSON Head Coach Sonoma State, nd Season at ISU Allison Gibson enters her second season as the head coach at Idaho State University. In her first season with the Bengals, Gibson re-established the soccer tradition at Idaho State, leading the Bengals to both a Big Sky Conference regular season title and a tournament championship. The tournament title earned the Bengals an automatic bid to the 2006 NCAA College Cup, where the team nearly upset 11th-ranked Utah on its home field, falling 3-2 in double overtime. Under Gibson s direction, nine Bengals landed spots on the All-Conference team and five earned places on the All-Tournament team. On her watch, nine Bengals also received Big Sky All-Academic honors. Gibson was named Big Sky Conference Coach of the Year for her accomplishments during the 2006 season. The second-year coach also serves the soccer community in numerous roles outside of college athletics. She served as the head coach of the U-16 Olympic Development Program team this past year, marking the sixth year that the coach has been involved in the program. Gibson came to Idaho State after a five-year stint as the top assistant at the University of San Francisco of the West Coast Conference, considered one of the nation s best soccer conferences. While serving as an assistant for the Dons, Gibson also served as a head coach in the Region IV Olympic Development Program, coaching the U-14 Regional Team. At USF, Gibson handled all matters of coaching, including practice planning, travel, scouting, recruiting and USF summer camps. She also developed a leadership workshop for student-athletes. USF s best season was the 2004 campaign, where the Dons went despite a schedule that included regional and national powerhouses such as the University of Portland and Utah. Gibson has definitely seen the best the nation has to offer, as last year San Francisco played the nation s toughest schedule, facing 10 teams that qualified for the NCAA College Cup in 2005, including national champion Portland and North Carolina. Gibson is highly decorated as a player, leading Sonoma State University to a pair of NCAA College Cup appearances, including the Final Four in 1992, and a Final Eight appearance in She led the Cossacks to a pair of Northern California Athletic Conference championships, earning NCAC Player of the Year both in 1992 and 1993, while leading SSU to a 31-9 composite record. She also earned All-America honors both years from the National Soccer Coaches Association of American. In 2000, Gibson was inducted into Sonoma State s Hall of Fame She then became an assistant coach at SSU, helping the Cossacks to a record over the next two seasons, and two more postseason trips. Ironically, SSU s volunteer coach for the 1995 season was Gordon Henderson, who served as Idaho State very first head coach from Gibson later went on to play professionally in Japan for three seasons with the Fujita Mercury before returning to the United States, where she worked as the Director of Coaching of the Youth Girls for the Colorado Rush Soccer Club in Denver. Allison graduated from Sonoma State in 1995 with a bachelor s degree in kinesiology, and she earned her master s in 2004 from the University of San Francisco in organization and leadership. She holds a United States Soccer Federation A coaching license. 4 About Arizona State The Sun Devils return 17 letterwinners, including nine starters from a 2006 team that went and placed seventh in the Pac-10. The team has a new coach in Kevin Boyd, who previously to ASU, spent 10 years as the head coach of Pac- 10 rival California where he collected a record and eight appearances in the NCAA tournament. The Sun Devils are currently ranked 11th in Soccer Buzz west rankings. About Cal State Fullerton The Titans open their season in Las Vegas this week after defeating Biola 2-0 in an exhibition match last Saturday. The team returns 14 letterwinners, including eight starters from its 2006 squad that finished the season with a record and placed third in the Big West Conference. The team was selected fourth in the Big West preseason coaches poll, and the team is receiving votes in the National Soccer Coaches Association s top-25 poll. Idaho State - Arizona State Series Info Idaho State s Friday meeting with Arizona State marks the first time that the two teams have ever met. The Bengals are all-time against teams from the Pac-10 Conference. ISU last met up with a Pac-10 school on Aug. 26, 2005 when the team dropped a 2-1 decision to Washington State in Pocatello. Idaho State - Cal State Fullerton Series Info Idaho State and Cal State Fullerton meet for just the second time Sunday. The two teams last met on Sept. 24, 2000 in Fullerton, Calif., with Idaho State taking a 2-0 victory. The Bengals are all-time against teams from the Big West Conference. The last time ISU played a team from the Big West was on Sept. 10, 2006 when the Bengals dropped a 1-0 decision to UC Davis in California Season Recap In just her first season at the helm of the Idaho State women s soccer program, head coach Allison Gibson restored the love and passion of the game to her players and reestablished the ISU soccer tradition in Pocatello. Gibson guided the Bengals to both Big Sky Conference regular season and tournament championships, earning the team a trip to the NCAA College Cup. The success earned Gibson Big Sky Conference Coach of the Year honors. We had been climbing a mountain all season long, said Gibson. To reach the top of that mountain was a great feeling. I was so happy for our players, the school, and the community. It was a great accomplishment for our team and a great feeling. The climb started with a tough 1-0 loss to Utah State in the season opener at Davis Field. The Bengals were unable to schedule a typical preseason game and Gibson treated the loss as an exhibition contest, telling the local media that the team would bounce back. She was right as Idaho State rebounded with an impressive 6-1 win over Southern Utah the following game. The six goals in the win over SUU tied the team record for goals scored in a single game. Freshman Annamarie Hofstetter recorded one goal and four assists in the game, earning the Boise native six points. The six points broke the all-time single game record for points. The four assists in that game also broke the ISU single game record for assists. The freshman midfielder received Big Sky Player of the Week honors for her accomplishments. After opening the season with a 1-1 record at home, Idaho State traveled to Provo to face Brigham Young in the team s first road contest of the season. The Bengals dropped a heart-breaking 2-1 overtime decision to the 18th-ranked Cougars. After the loss, Gibson reminded her team that it had led one of the top teams in the nation for most of the game. Next up for the Bengals was the Governor s Cup in Boise, Idaho. ISU opened play at the Governor s Cup with a 3-0 shutout over Idaho, followed by a 1-0 win against tournament host Boise State. The Bengals were able to bring the Governor s Cup back to Pocatello for the fourth time in its nine-year history. The only other time the Bengals swept the in-state teams to claim the Governor s Cup was during the 2000 season. Idaho State Governor James E. Risch even made a special stop to Pocatello on Oct. 20 to deliver the hardware, presenting the Governor s Cup to the team in a special ceremony at Davis Field. The pair of wins over Idaho and Boise State was followed by four-straight losses, including three one-goal defeats. The Bengals dropped a 2-1 decision at San Jose State before taking a 1-0 loss at UC Davis. The team returned home from its California road trip to host nationally-ranked Utah, dropping a 3-1 decision. ISU then traveled to Laramie, where the team took a 1-0 loss to Wyoming. NOTES We were hungry for a win, Gibson said of the losing streak. We had been playing very well and we were prepared. We had been a little unlucky here and there, but at the same time we were training hard to not allow ourselves to get in an unlucky situation. We were never worried during that stretch. We knew it was all going to help us in the long run. With just one game remaining in the preseason schedule to prepare for Big Sky play, Idaho State took advantage with a 2-1 road win at Utah Valley State. For a second-straight year, Natalie Graham put in the game-winning goal against UV. Graham, who was playing in her hometown of Orem, Utah, put the game-winner in the back of the net with just 10 minutes remaining in the game. Despite the confidence after the win at Utah Valley, Idaho State couldn t find the back of the net against Portland State in the league opener as the Bengals dropped a 1-0 overtime decision at Davis Field. The loss left the team with a bad taste in its mouth as it marked the first time in school history that Idaho State had dropped an overtime decision at home. The loss was very unfortunate, Gibson said. It s hard to take. Sometimes you have to have a little luck on your side in soccer and unfortunately luck wasn t on our side in the loss. We knew we would bounce back from it. Bounce back they did. Idaho State rallied to win five straight, starting with overtime decision wins against Sacramento State at home and Northern Arizona on the road. Chantal Kim scored the game-winner against Sacramento State for the 1-0 overtime win, while Chelsea Cox put in her first career goal to defeat NAU 2-1 in double overtime in Flagstaff. The momentum continued to build as the team defeated Northern Colorado 3-0 in Greeley. Jenny Ford came off the bench and made the most of her time, scoring two goals in a three minute span to help ISU to the shutout over Northern Colorado. With the win, ISU completed the road sweep with wins at both NAU and UNC. Ford was named Big Sky Offensive Player of the Week for her performance, while teammate Lyndsay Gensler was named Defensive Player of the Week after collecting six saves in the 2-1 win over NAU and recording a career-high 10 saves in the win over UNC. The Bengals followed up their success in Greeley and Flagstaff with a first-ever win in Missoula over Montana. The 1-0 victory marked the first win in Missoula in six previous tries. Elizabeth Roberts put the ball in the back of the net for the game winner, marking her first-ever collegiate goal. Idaho State rode its four-game win streak back to Pocatello for its regular season home finale against Eastern Washington. Senior day couldn t have been any more memorable as senior Chantal Kim scored three goals in a 5-1 victory, becoming the first player in ISU history to score three goals in a single game. Prior to Kim, an ISU player had scored two goals in a game on 20 different occasions, but no player had ever put in three prior to Kim s performance on Oct. 22. Kim s six points during that game also tied Hofstetter s six point effort against Southern Utah earlier in the season as the top point mark in a single game in ISU history. Kim s effort earned her Big Sky Offensive Player of the Week honors. Jennifer Loo received Big Sky Defensive Player of the Week honors after anchoring the Bengal defense to the 1-0 shutout win over Montana and the victory over EWU. After riding high for five straight wins, Idaho State dropped a tough 2-1 overtime decision at Weber State in the Big Sky regular season finale. However, ISU had already clinched the regular season league title and rights to host the Big Sky Tournament prior to the WSU loss. In the long run, I think that loss helped us, Gibson said of the loss at Weber State. We knew we would have to turn right around and play them in the first round of the tournament. We took the loss and used it to our advantage. We knew we had to put the loss behind us and build on what we had achieved during the season. Weber didn t see the best ISU team out on the field during that regular season finale. The Bengals did meet up with Weber State in the first round of the Big Sky Tournament in Pocatello and Idaho State did use the loss to its advantage, avenging the regular season loss in Ogden with a 1-0 victory over the Wildcats. Kim scored in the 54th minute to help Idaho State advance past Weber State. Waiting for Idaho State in the tournament championship game was Sacramento State, who had lost to ISU 1-0 in overtime earlier in the season at Davis Field. In what easily was the most exciting game ever in the history of the Big Sky Conference Soccer Tournament, Gensler saved Katie Burton s penalty kick in the seventh round of the shootout, and Idaho State advanced to its fourth NCAA College Cup, winning 4-3 over Sacramento State in a sudden-death penalty kick shootout. Gensler kept ISU alive by saving SAC s penalty kick to send it to sudden death. Gensler was named the tournament s MVP, while Graham, Loo, Kim, and Jill Christofferson were named to the All-Tournament team. Gibson had taken a team that missed the Big Sky Tournament the past two seasons and had turned them back into the league champions. Idaho State s season continued at the NCAA College Cup where the team took on firstround host at 11th-ranked Utah in Salt Lake City. Despite a 2-1 lead with just 30 second remaining in the game, Idaho State was called for a foul in the box and Utah scored on the ensuing penalty kick to tie the game. The Utes then scored in the second overtime period to take the 3-2 win over ISU. Michelle Okumura scored both of ISU s goals in the loss.
