HOME AT LAST After playing six of its first seven games on the road, Georgia State returns home to host former conference rival Jacksonville Monday at 7 p.m. at the GSU Sports Arena. All Georgia State games can be heard live on WRAS-FM The Panthers (3-4) split a pair of games last week in the South Alabama Thanksgiving Tournament, defeating Utah Valley, 59-52, but falling to the host Jaguars, 70-66, in the championship game. Jacksonville is 0-3, but the losses were to Florida State, California and South Carolina, all on the road. Now in his third season at Georgia State, head coach Rod Barnes has a veteran team that features six seniors--five of them in the starting lineup--headlined by all-conference guard Joe Dukes. Dukes, the 6-1 senior from Cuthbert, Ga., is a preseason selection to the All-Colonial Athletic Association second team after earning third-team honors a year ago. The dynamic guard averages a team-leading 12.7 points per game, along with 5.3 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.9 steals per game. He earned All-Tournament honors at the South Alabama Thanksgiving Tournament after scoring a career-high 26 points against the Jaguars. Dukes is joined in the backcourt by 6-0 senior Trae Goldston of Decatur, Ga., who is the Panthers second-leading scorer at 10.6 ppg. He is also GSU s top three-point threat, ranking sixth in Panther annals in career treys. Both Dukes and Goldston can play either guard position, as can top backups Marques Johnson and James Fields, giving Barnes considerable flexibility. Johnson, the junior transfer from NC State, averages 1.7 points, while Fields, a 6-3 sophomore, averages 3.7 ppg and 1.7 rpg. In the post, the Panthers use a primary rotation of three seniors in 6-10 Xavier Hansbro, 6-7 Trey Hampton and 6-6 Ousman Krubally. After his career-high 21 points against Utah Valley, Hansbro also made the All-Tournament team at the South Alabama Tournament. Georgia State s top rebounders are Krubally at 7.7 pg (fourth in the CAA) and Hampton (5.9 pg). The pair ranks one-two in the league in offensive rebounds. In the scoring column, Krubally averages 6.1 points, while Hampton contributes 5.1 ppg and leads the team with 1.1 blocked shots per game. Kevin Lott, a versatile 6-7 senior, rounds out the starting five. He averages 3.7 ppg and 2.3 rpg. Barnes can also turn to sophomore Jihad Ali and junior Dante Curry on the wing. Ali contributes 5.0 ppg and 3.3 rpg, including a season-high 10 points against South Alabama. Curry has gotten off to a slow start this season but averaged 6.9 ppg in He scored a season-high 10 points against Utah Valley. Promising freshman post player James Vincent, 6-10, should continue to earn more minutes as he rounds into shape after a preseason foot injury limited his practice time. Jacksonville, coached by former Georgia Tech assistant Cliff Warren, features 5-10 senior guard Ben Smith at 19.0 points per game. The Dublin, Ga., native poured in 31 points in Friday s loss to South Carolina. SERIES RECORD Jacksonville holds a lead in the series with Georgia State, but the Panthers captured the last meeting with a victory on Nov. 28, 2007 at Jacksonville. Before that game, the two teams had split the previous six meetings. The Dolphins are making their first trip to the GSU Sports Arena since winning on Feb. 25, The teams met regularly from through , when both were members of the Atlantic Sun Conference. JU head coach Cliff Warren is no stranger to Atlanta, having spent five seasons ( through ) as an assistant to Paul Hewitt at Georgia Tech. LAST MEETING On Nov. 28, 2007, Leonard Mendez scored 23 points and Rashad Chase hit three clutch free throws in the final 30 seconds to give Georgia State a road victory over Jacksonville at the Veterans Memorial Arena. Four current Panthers played in that game: Kevin Lott (2 pts, 1 reb), Trae Goldston (8 pts, 3 assists), Jihad Ali (4 pts, 2 rebs) and Ousman Krubally (5 pts, 4 rebs). ROAD WARRIORS Georgia State is home at last after a grueling road stretch that saw the Panthers play five games in seven days, all away from home. The Panthers were in Daytona Beach, Fla., for the Glenn Wilkes Classic from Nov , and then participated in South Alabama Thanksgiving Tournament last Wednesday and Thursday in Mobile, Ala. After hosting Jacksonville, the Panthers face three more road games at James Madison (Dec. 6), Florida A&M (Dec. 13) and then Florida State (Dec. 15). Just two of Georgia State s first 11 games are at home, but the tide turns in mid- December when the Panthers play four straight and five out of six at the GSU Sports Arena. CAREER HIGH FOR DUKES Joe Dukes scored a career-high 26 points in the Panthers loss at South Alabama. The 6-1 senior hit 12 of 19 shots from the field while contributing six rebounds, three assists and two steals. That was his second 20-point effort of the season and the seventh of his career. Dukes previous high was 24 points, set in last year s CAA Championships versus VCU. X MARKS THE SPOT Xavier Hansbro scored a career-high 21 points to lead Georgia State to a victory over Utah Valley in the first round of the South Alabama Thanksgiving Tournament. Hansbro scored nine straight points on two layups and five free throws in the Panthers pivotal second-half run that turned a one-point game into a lead. He also had seven rebounds and two blocked shots. Hansbro went to the free throw line 17 times in the game, just one shy of the Georgia State record. The only Panther with more free throw attempts in a game was

3 Georgia State Basketball Notes, Page 3 HEAD COACH ROD BARNES A new era in Georgia State basketball is underway with former Naismith National Coach of the Year Rod Barnes leading the Panther program. In his first two years in Atlanta, Barnes brought renewed energy and interest to the Georgia State program while laying the groundwork for future success. Now in his third season at the helm, Barnes looks for his Panthers to build on their strong finish in , when they won five of their final seven games. GSU s 8-10 record in the Colonial Athletic Association and eighth-place finish represent its best showing since joining the league four years ago. Barnes, who spent eight years as the head coach at Mississippi, is an 18-year veteran of college coaching and was an assistant coach in at Oklahoma. He was honored as the Naismith Coach of the Year as well as Southeastern Conference Coach of the Year in , when he led Ole Miss to its most successful season ever. His squad set a school-record for wins with a 27-8 record, advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 for the only time in school history and achieved a final national ranking of No. 9. A former All-Southeastern Conference player at Ole Miss, Barnes is the only person to earn All-SEC honors as a player and then be named SEC Coach of the Year. Barnes compiled a record in eight seasons at Ole Miss ( ), guiding the Rebels to four postseason bids, including three trips to the NCAA Tournament. Barnes first Ole Miss squad recorded the first NCAA Tournament win in school history with a 1999 first-round victory over Villanova. Two years later, the Rebels picked up NCAA Tournament victories over Iona and Notre Dame to reach the Sweet 16. He also spent five seasons as an assistant coach at Ole Miss under Rob Evans before being elevated to head coach on April 9, In addition to coaching the only three NCAA Tournament victories in school history, Barnes was part of five of the six NCAA appearances in Ole Miss annals as head or assistant coach. A native of Satartia, Miss., and 1988 graduate of Ole Miss, Barnes, 43, began his career as an assistant coach at Livingston for three years before returning to his alma mater in Rod Barnes as a Head Coach Mississippi (NCAA 2nd round) Mississippi (NIT 2nd round) Mississippi (NCAA Sweet 16) Mississippi (NCAA) Mississippi Mississippi Mississippi Mississippi Total, Mississippi Georgia State Georgia State Georgia State Total, Georgia State Career Record Ron Ricketts nearly 40 years ago; he had 18 attempts vs. Southwestern Memphis on Jan. 20, DUKES DISPLAYS ALL-AROUND SKILLS After getting off to a slow start in the first two games of the season, Joe Dukes began to display his all-conference form in the Glenn Wilkes Classic. The 6-1 senior averaged 14.7 points, 5.2 rebounds and 2.0 steals for the three games. He scored a season-high 20 points against Drake. Playing a career-high 41 minutes in the overtime loss to IUPUI, he contributed 14 points, six rebounds, five assists and five steals. He was named to the All-Tournament team. SCHOOL RECORD DEFENSIVE EFFORT Georgia State turned in perhaps the top defensive effort in school annals in a victory over Howard at the Glenn Wilkes Classic. The Panthers set a school-record for fewest points allowed. The previous low by a GSU opponent was 40 points by Jacksonville State on Feb. 11, Georgia State held the Bison to just 25.3 percent shooting from the field with just 11 field goals for the game. OOSS IS LOOSE Whether starting or coming off the bench, Ousman Krubally is a crowd favorite because of his hustle and hard-nosed play. He leads Georgia State and ranks fourth in the Colonial Athletic Association with 7.7 rebounds per game, including a league-leading 4.1 per game on the offensive glass. The slender, 6-6 senior opened the season with his first career double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds against NC State. He has had three double-figure efforts in the first seven games, including another double-double versus IUPUI. POSITIVES IN SEASON OPENING LOSS AT NC STATE Georgia State opened its season with a loss at NC State, but the final 16-point margin is deceiving. After trailing by just three points at the half, the Panthers tied the score at 37-all on a basket by Joe Dukes with 13:44 to play, and then Xavier Hansbro missed a three-pointer that would have give GSU its first lead. Still, the Panthers were within four points at with 10 minutes left. But the Wolfpack scored seven straight points to take a lead, and the Panthers could get no closer. Georgia State actually made more field goals than the Wolfpack (22-to- 20), the teams were an identical 3-for-16 from three-point range, and the rebounding was nearly even (39-to-37 NCS), but NC State went to the free throw line 35 times to just 12 trips for the Panthers. DUKES TABBED TO PRESEASON ALL-CAA TEAM Senior guard Joe Dukes was selected to the preseason all-colonial Athletic Association second team, selected by media, head coaches and sports information directors and announced at the league s annual media day. Last season, the 6-1 native of Cuthbert, Ga., made an immediate impact in his first season with the Panthers after transferring from Wake Forest and earned third-team all-caa honors. He ranked in the Top 15 in the league in scoring (12.8 ppg, 14th), assists (4.3 apg, 5th), steals (1.7 spg, 5th) and FG% (8th,.439). He was also the team s second-leading rebounder at 4.7 per game.

All three are from the state of Georgia, including Atlanta-area guards DeVonta White and Javonte Maynor and Augusta forward Harold Doby. White and Maynor were named to the preseason All-Metro team by the Atlanta Tipoff Club. Harold Doby Javonte Maynor DeVonta White F, 6-6, Augusta, Ga., Oldsmar Christian (Fla.) G, 6-1, Snellville, Ga., South Gwinnett HS G, 5-11, Roswell, Ga., Centennial HS SIX-PACK OF SENIORS The Panthers are easily the most experienced Georgia State team in Rod Barnes tenure, featuring six seniors. All six will be contributors, with Joe Dukes, Trae Goldston, Trey Hampton, Xavier Hansbro and Kevin Lott in the starting lineup, and Ousman Krubally as the top reserve. All six seniors are scheduled to earn their degrees in the coming year. THREE GAME-WINNING TREYS FOR TRAE Junior guard Trae Goldston hit two game-winning three-pointers last season and three in his career. All three have come at the Georgia State Sports Arena. Most recent was his winning trey against UNC Wilmington on Feb. 14, 2009, which came with just five seconds left. With the score tied, he took a feed from Joe Dukes and nailed a trey from the corner with just five seconds left to lift Georgia State to the victory. On Jan. 3, 2009, Goldston s three with just 11 seconds left gave Georgia State a victory over Old Dominion. After ODU had taken a two-point lead with 37 seconds left, Goldston took a pass from Dukes and hit from the right wing. On Feb. 16, 2008 against Northeastern, Goldston nailed a trey with 1.5 seconds left to give the Panthers a victory. MAKING THE GRADE The Georgia State basketball team has excelled in the classroom under head coach Rod Barnes. All four seniors who have finished their careers under Barnes have graduated, and this year s class of six seniors are all on schedule to earn their degrees in the coming year. Jihad Ali (2008), Ousman Krubally (2009) and Kevin Lott (2009) have earned the Colonial Athletic Association Commissioner s Academic Award under Barnes. The Panthers posted a grade point average of better than 2.8 for the academic year. In the fall 2008 semester, eight players had a GPA of 3.0 or better, with Jihad Ali making the Dean s List (3.5 GPA) and Dante Curry and James Fields on the Athletic Director s Honor Roll (3.2 GPA). 425 AND COUNTING Georgia State has made at least one three-point field goal in 425 straight games, dating back to the season. The last team to hold the Panthers without a trey was Stetson on Feb. 18, FROM THE LEFT The Georgia State roster features four left-handed shooters in seniors Trae Goldston, Trey Hampton and Ousman Krubally and sophomore Jihad Ali. GOLDSTON FOR THREE Senior guard Trae Goldston stands in sixth place on the Panthers career list for three-point field goals. A repeat of his junior season, when he nailed 64 treys, would vault him into second place. Goldston s career three-point accuracy rate is 35.6 percent, including 41.5 percent in CAA games. As a sophomore, he had the league s top three-point percentage in CAA games at.464.
