6 LAST TIME OUT KALAMAZOO, Mich. (Jan. 13, 2018) -- Western Michigan got off to a fast start and led throughout Saturday to hand Ball State a loss. Sean Sellers joined Ball State s 1,000-point club, while a pair of point guards led BSU in scoring. Tayler Persons finished with 13 points and five assists, while Ishmael El-Amin came off the bench to add 11 points. But Ball State (11-6, 2-2 MAC) could never dig its way out of an early hole created by Western Michigan s 8-for-9 shooting start from the floor. The Broncos built a double-digit lead less than 5 minutes into the game, and the Cardinals spent the rest of the game playing catch-up. Western Michigan (11-6, 3-1 MAC) hit 9 of 18 3-pointers to stay out in front, and the Broncos beat the Cardinals to 13 offensive rebounds. Western Michigan was very physical around the rim, and I thought that was part of the story of the game, Ball State head coach James Whitford said. I thought they played a really good game. I thought we kept competing all the way through, shared the ball and tried to play the game the right way. We just had a tough one. Sellers, a senior from Greensburg, Indiana, had nine points on a trio of 3-pointers to become the 30th player to score 1,000 points in a Ball State uniform. Fellow senior Francis Kiapway hit two 3-pointers of his own to take over sole possession of second place on the Cardinals career list for 3 s. He now has 205 and trails only Jesse Berry (224). Sellers is tied for third on that list with 203. Ball State fought back to cut a 16-point deficit to on a 3-pointer from El-Amin late in the first half. But Michael Flowers answered with a trey for Western Michigan, and then the Broncos scored the first six points of the second half to push their lead to The lead swelled to as many as 20, but Ball State continued to claw back. The Cardinals pulled within 10 on another El-Amin 3 with 3:45 to play, but that was as close as they could get. Ball State vs Western Michigan 1/13/18 4:30 p.m. at Kalamazoo, Mich. (Feb. 18, 2017) -- Tayler Persons scored a career-high 32 points to lead seven double-figure scorers as Ball State held off Central Michigan in overtime at McGuirk Arena. The second straight OT road win kept Ball State (17-10, 8-6 MAC) alone atop the Mid-American Conference West Division standings. We re playing good basketball, Ball State coach James Whitford said. We ve really played well three and a half of the past four games. Sometimes you win these ones, and sometimes you lose them. But for us to come on the road and get back-to-back wins is huge for us. Trey Moses (14 points, 12 rebounds) and Franko House (11 points, 10 boards) finished with double-doubles as the Cardinals swept the season series from the Chippewas (16-11, 6-8 MAC). For Moses, it was his third in a row. Francis Kiapway matched his season-high with 18 points, while Ryan Weber (12), Sean Sellers (11) and Tahjai Teague (11) also scored double figures. Ball State used an eight-point spurt from Kiapway in the final 90 seconds of the first half to build a lead at the break. The Cardinals then led for all but 18 seconds of the second half. Braylon Rayson s fall-away 3-pointer from the corner tied the game at 90. The Cardinals had the last possession, but Kiapway s 3 in the final seconds was off the mark, and the game went to overtime. Central Michigan grabbed the first lead on a Cecil Williams 3-point play. But the Cardinals followed with an 8-1 run, including a big 3-pointer from Sellers when the game was tied, to regain command. Ball State scored its final 12 points at the free throw line as Central Michigan fouled to try to stay in the game. Ball State vs Central Michigan 2/18/17 4:30 p.m. at Mount Pleasant, Mich. BSU s 61.7 percent remains the best mark by a MAC team against a D-I opponent this year. Persons Hits 1,000 Early Junior point guard Tayler Persons reached the 1,000-point mark for his career Nov. 22 at Bucknell. Persons, who played his freshman season at Northern Kentucky before transferring, needed just 69 college games to reach the mark. Mallers Perfect Game at the Line Kyle Mallers went 10 for 10 at the free throw line Nov. 19 at Oregon, scoring all 10 of his points at the stripe. He became the first Ball State player to attempt at least 10 free throws and make all of them since Franko House went 13 for 13 at Miami in February Tayler Persons followed with a 9-for-9 effort at the line Nov. 22 at Bucknell. Persons Drops 29 on Stony Brook Junior point guard Tayler Persons scored a season-high 29 points Nov. 17 against Stony Brook to lead Ball State to a comeback win. Persons went 12 of 18 from the floor, matching the most field goals made by a MAC player this season. He helped Ball State overcome an eightpoint halftime deficit to win by 11. Gunn is averaging 5.5 points and 3.3 rebounds in 15.3 minutes per game from his forward position. He has missed the past six games because of injury. Overtime Success Ball State is 7-1 in overtime games since the start of the season. The Cardinals went 4-0 in OT in and 3-1 last season, including wins in each of their final three OT contests. On the Rise The Cardinals have won 21 games, shared the MAC West Championship and competed in the CIT in each of the past two seasons. Prior to that, BSU had not won 20 games in consecutive seasons since the and campaigns. Ball State reached the semifinals of the MAC Tournament last year for the first time since 2011, falling to MAC regular season champion Akron. TAYLER S BIG YEAR SCORING & DISHING Point guard Tayler Persons became the first player in Ball State history to record at least 500 points and 150 assists in a season when he accomplished that feat last year as a sophomore. Persons finished last season with 526 points and 167 assists. CARDINALS SIGN TWO FOR 2018 Ball State added size at the guard position for its future rosters, signing 6-foot-5 Jarron Coleman (Indianapolis, Ind./Cathedral HS) and 6-foot-6 Kani Acree (Carbondale, Ill./ Carbondale Community HS) to national letters of intent. Jarron Coleman Coleman averaged 19.7 points, 7.2 rebounds and 2.3 assists last year on his way to a spot on the Indiana Junior All-Star Team. He raised his scoring average by more than 10 full points from his sophomore to his junior season. 10 MAC West Titles Ball State shared the MAC West Division championship for the second straight year in 2017, finishing tied atop the standings with Western Michigan. Since the MAC went to the divisional format in 1998, Ball State has won or shared six division titles: 1998 (co), 2000 (co), 2002, 2009 (co), 2016 (co) and 2017 (co). Tough Schedule The non-conference portion of Ball State s schedule was highlighted by six opponents that reached the NCAA tournament during the past two seasons and two Final Four squads from that stretch. BSU played Dayton (2017 NCAA), Oklahoma (2016 Final Four), Stony Brook (2016 NCAA), Oregon (2017 Final Four), Bucknell (2017 NCAA) and Notre Dame (2017 NCAA). Four of those games -- Oklahoma, Oregon, Bucknell and Stony Brook -- were tied to the Phil Knight Invitational, an event organized by ESPN to honor the Nike founder. Strength Returning BSU returned seven of its top nine scorers and 70 percent of its scoring from a year ago. Last season, Tayler Persons became the first Ball State player to record more than 500 points (526, 15.5 ppg) and 150 assists (167, 4.9 apg) in a season. The Cardinals also returned center Trey Moses, who was a MAC All-Defensive Team selection last year. Moses led the league in blocks during conference play with 1.4 per game. For the full season, he was the only player in the MAC to rank in the top five in the league in rebounding (8.3), blocks per game (1.1) and field goal percentage (.561). From Long Range Ball State broke the school record with 319 made 3-pointers as a team last season. Three of the top four single-season 3-point totals in program history have come over the past three seasons. MOST 3-POINTERS IN A SEASON (BSU HISTORY) in in in in Sellers Already with Degree Senior Sean Sellers has already graduated, earning his degree in sport administration over the summer. He is currently pursuing a master s degree in secondary education. Sellers is a two-time Academic All-MAC and MAC Distinguished Scholar Athlete selection. Adding More All-Stars Ball State s freshman class includes 4-man Zach Gunn, while the Cardinals added a pair of SEC transfers who will be returning to their home state guard K.J. Walton from Missouri and forward Brachen Hazen from Arkansas. All three of those players were Indiana All- Stars as high school seniors, bringing the total of former Indiana All-Stars on the BSU roster to eight. The Indiana All-Stars each year feature the top 13 players in the state. BSU s eight All-Stars matches the most on any college s roster since Purdue had eight during the season. Gunn is the top scorer (1,660) and rebounder (791) in the history of Hamilton Southeastern High School, a program that produced Indiana Mr. Basketball winners Gary Harris (2012) and Zak Irvin (2013). MAC Preseason Poll BSU was picked second in the MAC West Division preseason poll, and Tayler Persons was a Preseason All-MAC West selection. East Division Predicted Order of Finish 1. 15 JAMES WHITFORD Head Coach (Fifth Season) The Whitford File COACHING HISTORY April 2013-Present Head Coach Ball State Arizona Assoc. Head Coach Arizona Assistant Coach Xavier Assistant Coach Miami (Ohio) Asst. Coach Miami (Ohio) Admin. Asst. EDUCATION Wisconsin, 1994 Bachelor s in Political Science Miami (Ohio), 1996 Master s in Sports Studies James Whitford is in his fifth season as the Ball State men s basketball head coach in , continuing to lead a resurgence in the Cardinals program. Whitford s teams have surpassed 20 wins and shared the Mid-American Conference West Division championship in each of the past two seasons. The program had not achieved the first of those feats in consecutive seasons since the early 1990s and had not accomplished the second in back-to-back years in the league s divisional history (since 1998). Ball State has also played in the postseason in each of the past two seasons with trips to the CIT, including a quarterfinal appearance at the end of the campaign. Whitford s squad went (11-7 MAC), tying for the seventh-most wins in program history for the second year in a row. BSU ranked among the top 15 percent of teams in the country in scoring offense at 78.7 points per game. It was the program s highest per-game scoring output in the past 40 years. The Cardinals reached the semifinals of the MAC Tournament for the first time since 2011 before falling to No. 1 seed Akron by just four points. The team went (10-8 MAC) on the strength of the league s No. 1 scoring defense (66.8). The Cardinals shared the MAC West title after being picked last in the preseason poll. Coming on the heels of a seven-win campaign in , Ball State s turnaround ranked as the fourth-largest of any team in the nation. The CIT berth marked the program s first postseason appearance in 14 years. Whitford came incredibly close to winning MAC Coach of the Year honors for the season, finishing second to Akron s Keith Dambrot. He tied Dambrot with 14 first-place votes but ended up one point behind the Akron coach in total points ( ). Whitford has ushered in an era of 3-point shooting in Muncie. Three of the top four outputs from beyond the arc in program history have come during his tenure: 234 in , 305 in , and a school-record 319 in The Cardinals have also been one of the MAC s most unselfish teams under his guidance, leading the league in assists during conference play in (14.7) and ranking second in that category in (15.1). Whitford laid the foundation for the future at Ball State during his first two years, installing his system and ramping up the Cardinals recruiting efforts. His first two Ball State teams were heavy on youth, with the squad ranking among the 25 youngest in the country. Both teams featured the Mid-American Conference Freshman of the Year, including Sean Sellers in Whitford has now recruited eight former Indiana All-Stars to Ball State -- Sellers, Jeremie Tyler, Tahjai Teague, Tayler Persons, Kyle Mallers, Zach Gunn, K.J. Walton and Brachen Hazen. All eight will be on the roster in Prior to Whitford s tenure, Ball State had never had more than four Indiana All-Stars on a single roster. In the decade prior to his arrival in Muncie, the Cardinals signed a total of three. Whitford was introduced as the 19th men s basketball coach in Ball State history on April 10, In his career as an assistant coach at Arizona, Xavier and Miami University, his teams posted an overall record of , reached the NCAA tournament nine times and played in the postseason 12 times.
